    Isaac prefers to spread the magic of Disney over kissing frogs so today he theorizes on why Tiana became a frog.

    In Princess and the Frog, after wishing upon a star, Tiana’s dreams finally begin to come true when she is visited by a frog who turns out to be a prince. Desperate to become a human again, Prince Naveen begs to have Tiana kiss him but she is not so sure. Of course Tiana is not about kissing a frog. I mean they are covered in mucus just for starters. But after the devastating loss of her dream restaurant and the promise by the rich Prince Naveen to grant her whatever she wants she’s willing to make an exception. So Tiana goes for it! She goes in to smooch that amphibian right on the mouth and suddenly becomes a frog herself… Now this wasn’t a super big deal to me… until I realized that Naveen kisses Tiana’s best friend Lottie at the end of the film and nothing happens to her! Why does Tiana become tied to the curse while Charlotte doesn’t?

    The whole pitch to Naveen was “it’s the green you need” and he agreed to gain that green. Obviously it was a different green than he expected. When Tiana kissed him, she was also making a deal to get “the green” so she essentially made the same deal as Naveen did with the shadow man, spreading the play on word curse to her. When they kiss next, the spirits aren’t there anymore and they aren’t looking for money, so the green they got was reversed. Or at least that’s my theory.

  • @makennashuter6606
    @makennashuter6606 Před 5 lety +738

    I don't know if anyone else has said this before or not, but this was my thoughts. Tiana wished upon a star to have her dreams come true, and JUST THEN a frog jumps out and wants her to kiss him. She kisses him and turns into a frog, leading her to go on a journey with him and eventually falling in love and getting married, making her a princess. We see that at the end of the movie she was able to achieve her dreams with him. If she had not kissed him/ kissed him and he turned human off the bat, then I doubt she would have gone through the process of falling in love with him (as she found him very annoying and obnoxious at first), leading her to not become a princess and being unable to achieve her dream/ it takes YEARS to get anywhere close (come on, we all saw the tins of pennies and dimes she had collected throughout YEARS of working). The star she wished upon provided her with a chance to be happy, not only having the restaurant, but also finding the love of her life.

    • @rosestar1324

      @DirectorxMizuki Před 5 lety +33

      makenna shuter However, her dream was never to fall in love, get married, and become a princess. Her dream was to own a huge restaurant and Naveen was a BROKE prince. She had to make her own dreams come true, she just got wrapped up in a different plot phenomenon.
      I feel like if the kiss didn’t work: Naveen would have lied “I can get you a loan”, Tiana would have dropped everything to help, hijinks ensue with a lady and a frog, it’s revealed he lied, he’s compared to the villain, sad moment, apologizes, fight villain, break curse on him, and Naveen who loves Tiana makes-up with his family to get a loan for her business.
      This is a decent plot that is closer to the original tale and would have allowed us to see the “black princess” fully.

    In the original fairytale by the Grimms, the frogs curse isn't broken by a kiss. The princess refuses to kiss the prince and throws him to the wall instead and that breaks the curse.
    This was changed in some of the child friendly books where the princess then kissed the frog, but those are only "after Grimm" and not "by Grimm"

      @IISheireenII Před 5 lety +29

      that is not quite correct
      these storys are always "after Grimm" instead of "by Grimm" because the Grimms didn't create them, they just collected them. Writers not authors.
      And they didn't just write down one version, they've written down every locally altered telling of a story they could find and bound them in different versions of their fairy tale collections.
      There are versions where she throws the frog against a wall and he turns back and there are versions where she kisses him. Both as written down by Grimm. ...and there are altered versions in more modern fairy tale books, but not every variant has to be from one of those

    • @coriowl4689
      @coriowl4689 Před 5 lety +71

      Well, in charlotte's case it was because midnight signified the end of the day (end of mardi gras) and thus the end of her "princesshood". Beyond that and Cinderella, I can't think of a story where the magic has anything to do with midnight. Merida had until sunrise on the third day to break her mom's curse, Ariel had until sunset on the third day. Snow white and sleeping beauty just had to wait to be kissed... Just whenever. The beast had until the last petal fell from his rose, rapunzel had to have her hair cut, there are a number of deadlines and such that stop the effects of magic; good or bad.

The spell has the effect on those who desires wealth. Obviously Lottie wouldn’t want that desire because she’s already rich. So of course when she kissed Naveen she doesn’t change.

    Though I like the video's explanation, my own opinion is that black magic only works on those with dark intentions. One being, greed. It's call BLACK MAGIC for a reason. It's seen as evil and corrupt just as the characters who experienced the pain of the black magic.
    - The prince was effected by black magic not only because of his contract by shaking the shadow man's hand, but his intentions were that of greed (money/the green).
    -The servant(sorry I forgot his name) was effected by the black magic due to the ill intentions of revenge. Revenge on the royal family for being a servant and a want to make them his servants while he gets to be rich and powerful.
    - Tiana is effected by the black magic because she has the intent of using the Prince's money for her own personal gain (her restaurant).
    - The Shadow Man is able to use the black magic with his dark intentions of being rich, thirst for money and power.
    - Charlotte has the good intentions of helping her best friend with her dream to own a restaurant, also she is putting down her own wants and wishes of being a real life princess for her friend (she even says, "for you Tia.") She wasn't effected because of her good intentions.
    This is also proven when Ray and Mama Odi fight the shadows.
    - Sure Ray has literal light, but fighting for the intent of protecting his new friends allows his to fight and not be effected by the dark magic.
    - In the movie we see Mama Odi as a sweet old lady who loves everyone and everything. She has nothing but good intentions with only the will to protect all of the beings that she cares for.

    Theory 1. I personally believe it’s because in the first kiss they both had “hope”, Navieen was going to be human, Tiana was going to get her restaurant. But in the second kiss, the clock had already struck, so Navieen knew there was no hope of being human. If you recall, the kiss with Charlotte showed that Navieen obviously knew that it wouldn’t work, leaving him looking disappointed.
    Theory 2. Maybe the “if you get kissed, they turn into a frog” rule only applies to the day that the curse could be broken, as kind of a “backup”. Since Navieen kissed Tiana in the time that the curse could still be broken, she turned into a frog. But when Charlotte kissed Navieen, the time to break the curse was over. The Witch Doctor doesn’t play fair, thats why this one makes sense.

In another (the one I grew up with) the Princess gets so disgusted at the Frog when he asks to sleep in the same bed as her that she flings him across the room and he ends up hitting the wall...which for some reason breaks the spell. Because, you know, nothing like being violently flung into a wall to break a curse.

    I have a feeling that since the frog curse has been cast on Naveen, it may needed some time for the spell to "set in" to only affect Naveen. True kissing a princess will break the spell, but since Tiana was only dressed as a princess, she became a frog herself. I mean, think of it like this: a bench in the park has just recently been painted, but someone forgot to either "rope it off" or put up a 'wet paint' sign. And someone comes along and sat/laid down on it, causing some of the paint to get on them. Or even a scenario where someone stepped into wet cement.

    I think Tiana's frog-ness might be connected to the end of Friends on the Other Side, where we hear the spirits say "You got what you wanted, but you lost what you had!"
    My first point is kind of flimsy but Tiana IS better off than Naveen financially when he's transformed and if they married he could benefit from her restaurant's success.
    Secondly, Naveen thinks he needs money to be happy but people like Mama Odi know what he truly needs, and giving him something in common with Tiana, ie her own perception-shifting transformation will lead him to the happiness he wishes for along with hers. Two birds with one st... spell!

    Another reasons ties to one of the points you made. How- Tiana and Naveen had more selfish motives, while Charlotte had a more selfless reason. Not trying to sound super Christian, but Charlottes reason to kiss Naveen was selfless. Doing a good deed on such a Holy day might have also protected her from turning into a frog.

    @tunessystem787 Před 5 lety +1

    This could be the reason. But I also think motive might have a lot to do with it as well, because of the original version of the frog prince. The original version didn’t even have a kiss, but was instead about motives and bargains. Originally, the princess lost her golden ball and the frog retrieved it on the condition that he could come to her home, eat from her plate, and sleep on her bed. She agreed, but ran off once she had her ball, selfishly intending to not fulfill her end of the agreement. The frog finally reached the palace and the princess slammed the door in his face. Her father, after hearing the situation told her that she had to keep her promise and allowed the frog in. When the frog tried to eat from her plate, she put it out of his reach and her father again made her keep her promise. However, when they were alone in her room and he tried to sleep on her bed, she picked him up and chucked him against the wall. It was then that the frog turned into a prince. So with all the emphasis on promises and motives in the original, and the fact that it was also selfish bargaining that made the curse in the movie to begin with, it could have definitely been one of these factors that Disney was using when cursing Tiana.

Even if her dream is noble and her selfishness is very sympathetic (the restaurant meaning a lot to her), it meant nothing re: Naveen, so it was a similar deal as that which Naveen struck with Facilier.

    Hi! I really liked your theories, some of them were new to me and interesting but I'd like to share with you something that I thought about:
    So, in the book Tiana and the stolen jewel they introduce a whole new character, Lucinda LaBouff. This Lucinda is the second cousin of Charlotte who she didn't know (neither his father knew about this woman). Lucinda is a witch as old as Mama Odie, in fact they've been rivals since they were very young.
    This makes me think about the war between voodoo against the common witchcraft of the occidental culture and that maybe, since Lucinda LaBouff is such a powerful witch, it means the women of the LaBouff family magic have some sort of magic, that Lottie would have some sort of magic she doesn't know about. That this magic of these well-known witches would have protected her from Dr. Facilier voodoo and hoodoo.
    Of course this book was published years after the movie and probably the writers didn't think of Charlotte as some kind of witch, but I mean... That's what a headcanon is about, right?
    P.D.: Love your videos

    I found this video months after it aired, so I can't give any suggestions for all that many videos that follow. Regardless, Halloween has a fascinating history, one that a lot of people just don't seem to realize, and its oldest roots still have glimmers in our modern celebrations. Halloween gets its name from All Hallows Eve, which was a Christianized version of the Celtic holiday of Samhain, basically the Celtic New Years' celebration. The Celts believed that boundaries between the lands of the living and the dead were at their weakest at the point where one year ends and another begins, and many of their practices and traditions during Samhain celebrations show this. The tradition of dressing up in our modern celebrations goes all the way back to Samhain, with three different but equally vital practices. Those practices being Dressing up as Faeries and dancing around to distract the fey from the festivities, dressing up as goblins to distract goblins from the festivities, and wearing scary masks to scare away malicious spirits. Treats during Halloween can be traced all the way back to Samhain feasts, which were as much for the living as they were the dead. And rounding it all out is the Jack-o-lantern, which is actually one of the younger traditions when compared to the other practices. The Jack-o-Lantern traces its origins all the way back to an Old Irish tradition of carving giant Beets and Turnips into lanterns, just ordinary lanterns, not elaborate and less than inspired faces we see in pumpkins in our modern era, there's even a story tied to them in Irish lore, the tale of Jack of the Lantern.
    Long story short, Jack of the Lantern is about a man named Jack who managed to make a deal with the Devil (at least in all the versions I've been able to find) to not take his soul when he died, then Jack, secure in the knowledge he wouldn't have his soul doomed to eternal torment and suffering that is Hell, proceeded to go about living in manner that actually ended up barring him from access to Heaven; his then wandered the world for a time, the stories I found didn't give any definitive amounts, but he grew tired being a soul forced to wander the world, as being such an existence is actually quite boring, and actually tried to break into Hell, he got chased out by the Devil himself, who also threw one of Hell's ever burning coals that are said to permanently burn any soul that touches them out after Jack, and so in order to pick it up Jack hollowed out a nearby giant Beet into the form of a lantern and carefully scooped the coal into this Beet-turned-lantern and uses it light his way as he continues to wander the earth.
    And that's the summary version, I recommend you look into the story, you might just find some unexpected connections in a Disney property.

    This may sound weird, but I always thought that the kissing thing was like a chain. So, Tiana kissing the Prince turned her into the frog. It also passed onto her the ability to turn someone into a frog. So if someone had kissed Tiana, they would become a frog. And the cycle would continue from there.

    The Princess and The Frog and Tangled are my two favorite Disney Princess movies. TPaTF has the best villain and one of the best supporting casts and Tangled has some of the best music (Especially if you include Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure). And both have the best princesses and love stories.

    Great theories Issac, you really researched the hell out this theory. So much fun hearing you deduce the methods of this curse. If you read the recent Hocus Pocus book, definitely discuss that. Or maybe analyse another Disney song from spookier Disney films like The Black Cauldron. Take care.

    It's a pretty good theory but I think there is another good explanation. I think that the curse didn't work on Charlotte because she was one of the targets of the curse, one thing that one has to take into account when talking magic is that all magic, even evil magic, follows very strict rules. The rules of any magic are wildly different from magic type to magic type but if one analyses them, one would find that there are a few core rules that all magic systems follow, one of which is that the magic can't be used to destroy ITSELF.
    If one thinks around those lines then it all fits, wen Facilier put the curse on Naveen it was done so with a very specific target in mind. the deal was that if he accepted then ''prince Naveen'' would get to marry Charlotte La Bouff and get access to the La Bouff fortune, while his deal with Lawrence was that he would get the same things and lifestyle that his master. Facilier was able to twist the words of the deal allowing him to curse Naveen into a frog taking away his identity has ''Prince Naveen'' and give it to Lawrence that way fulfilling both deals without breaking the rules, but there was a very specific part of the deal, that ''Prince Naveen'' needed to marry Charlotte La Bouff. Curses don't disappear even if the one who cast it goes away (If so then Naveen and Tiana would have turned back into humans the moment Facillier and The Shadows went into The Other Side) so even if Lawrence lost the ability to turn into Naveen the deal was still on, ''Prince Naveen'' had to marry Charlotte La Bouff. So if the curse were to turn Charlotte into a frog it would have broken the deal and essentially self terminate

  • @EChacon
    @EChacon Před 5 lety +1

    I actually agree with your last reasoning regarding on why Charlotte didn't turn into a frog was because the curse was from Dr. Facilier. After his amulet was destroyed and dragged into the voodoo spirits' world as punishment for his failure in repaying his debt to them, resulting in the curse no longer being active and Lottie not turned into a Frog.
    Thanks for the Video Isaac and also you think you could do a Theory related to the movie Ratatouille or some other Disney movies relating to Halloween (e.g. Nightmare Before Christmas, Hocus Pocus)?

    I don't know if you made a video on this or not, but I'm curious as to who is Grandmother Willow from Pocahontas? I think there's a story in there somewhere...
    I'd also love to hear an origin for Maleficent. (Her backstory has a deeper explanation in her live-action movie, as well as the book that came with it.)
