That scene killed me. I expected the show to end with one of the main characters dying, but considering none of them ended up dying, this scene was devastating. Keri Russell's barely-contained tears and trembling lip are the most powerful element. Elizabeth and Philip have avoided capture, but they have lost their children, their closest friend, the only home they've known for twenty years, and the cause they've been working for during all that time (which is on its last legs), and they're returning to a home country that they barely know anymore. What a gut punch.

This is one of the most heartbreaking scenes I probably ever saw and it's even more amazing that not a single word was said in it. Just watching Philip's, Elizabeth's and Paige's facial expressions and reactions tells you all you need to know about their pain, sadness and fear. My compliments to the show writers and actors. They were fantastic from day one and never lost their edge. The music was simply fantastic! For me this show was also a bit personal. I grew up on the other side and remember those times with hyper-inflation, empty shelves, power outages, food & fuel shortages. We were truly 'nobodies' as Gabriel once said.

In a series finale packed with outstanding moments, this has to be the best one. The way the vocals kick back in just as it’s revealed that Paige got off the train is one of the best musical cues in anything, ever. This show was such a masterpiece and the finale was the perfect way to wrap it up.
Paige getting off the train was some of the most devastating half minute of TV in a long time. The garage scene where they come clean to Stan is also rough to watch. Stan experiences so many emotions in that scene, not the least of which is heartbreak. He really loved the Jennings family and they betrayed him. The irony is not lost on Stan who is seeing what it is like to have built a close relationship with someone who is out to destroy you; a job he had for many years when he went undercover with the neo-nazis.
The characters didn't need to say a word, the songs says it all. This was such a powerful sequence. Elizabeth breathes a sigh of relief, thinking they have escaped the authorities... Then the song reaches its climax when Elizabeth sees Paige out the window. Such a haunting scene. Paige steps out and Philip and Elizabeth realize their daughter has chosen her own path, her own life at that moment, which is what they have raised her to do, albeit not exactly what they expected. The train is a fitting symbolism of "life must go on", and we make life-altering decisions when we choose a stop.
Will honestly never hear this song the same way again. Hearing Bono's wailing as Elizabeth's heart breaks wordlessly...the instantaneous feelings of pain and grief. Philip rushing to her side was their only solace. Two random people on a train, surrounded by people who have no idea what a loss they've just suffered.

It occurred to me; this is the first time they were ever unprepared for something. They always had backups and contingencies no matter how sideways things went. Even as they were fleeing the country that had a plan and were confident...until they saw Paige on the platform. We've never seen them feeling shocked or helpless until that moment. I'm glad the writers chose this ending. It was so much more powerful than having a character die. The writing, directing, and acting are all brilliant in this scene.
The entire sequence of With Or Without You playing is a brilliant gut punch to the feelings, for everyone. No one gets a happy ending. Phillip and Elizabeth have to leave behind all they have known since their early 20s, then they lose their daughter, and cannot do anything about it. The Soviet Union will be as alien to them now, as the US was when they first arrived, and is rapidly nearing collapse. Paige and Henry lose their parents, while Henry finds out he has been lied to his entire life. Stan loses his best friend, and is now suspicious of his wife. He just looks shattered. Even the FBI fails to get their suspects. This scene adds a kick to the groin, on top of that gut punch.
If this show doesn't win a single Emmy this year I'll give up on Hollywood. You couldn't find a show these days- a drama at least- that has this perfect of acting, writing and directing in TV. You simply can't find it.

The emmys have been a joke for years now, never awarding the people and shows that should actually win and instead deciding to go with the easy vote. The Americans final season and final episode was absolutely perfect in every category and deserves all the recognition
Honestly I don't ever look up individual scenes on CZcams from movies or tv shows because their impact is robbed if there's no context. But this one is so well done that I keep coming back to it on its own - incredible work.

I really need to watch Breaking Bad. The garage scene will seem tame by comparison. The Americans had some great drama and great acting but the pacing was always off kilter.

This killed me, and then the scene came with Paige in the safe house and all I could remember was her saying that she wasn’t afraid of death, but she was afraid of ending up alone. And there she was with her bottle and no one to turn to 😭. The whole season building up and hinting that someone was gonna die and then they all live and we realize the most painful ending is everyone having to figure out how to keep going with the absolute mess that has been made of all of their lives. Tragic, devastating, satisfying, powerful, and just right. Gonna miss this one.
I cried like a baby when I saw that scene. Philip and Elizabeth will likely never see Paige or Henry again. If they do it will be having their kids visit them in old age. Maybe that weird Facebook request Paige and Henry receive down the line. That finale as by far the best I have ever seen. No talking involved. I really felt for Philip and Elizabeth. To be on the train, not able to do anything, and to know they probably won’t see Paige again. Heartbreaking.

I broke down when I saw Paige standing there. Absolutely heartbreaking. This is the finale the show needed and deserved. Of course this show didn't end with death and explosions. That's never been what it's about. This is the perfect ending: I never would have predicted it, but i can't now imagine the show ending any other way. This has always been a show about trying to preserve fraying relationships in a cold world, and in the end, the only relationship that survives for these two is the relationship with each other.
This scene is the most shocking thing I've seen on TV since _Breaking Bad;_ it nearly made me cry when I first saw it. It's really a testament to how top-notch the writing and acting are when there's not a single word spoken whatsoever in a scene this affecting.
One of the single greatest TV scenes of all time. No question. I got a rush of chills through me when I saw Paige on the platform and the song crescendos with Elizabeth's own realisation. I think what makes it even more top tier though is that some had almost certainly, like I, guessed that Paige would be on the platform. Except with Border Patrol. Never in a million years did I see her voluntarily leaving her parents behind, amazing character development. What a show.
Let’s not forget in this episode that neither Oleg nor Pastor Tim ratted out Philip or Elizabeth when given the chance by Stan. This bought them enough time perhaps instead of having the whole FBI on them, they just had the confrontation with Stan in the parking garage later that night when they could reason with him.
I love how in this show there was never any glamour in the work they do. A lot of spy movies you have beautiful women, cool gadgets, awesome fight scenes and there’s always a happy ending with the hero proverbially riding off into the sunset but not this snow. There’s no happy ending, there’s no riding off into the sunset with a job well done, the last thing Philip and Elizabeth see in America is their daughter staying back in America while they go back to a country that isn’t the same one they left so many years before. They most likely will never speak to or see their children ever again and that punishment is worse than getting caught by the FBI.

They literally could've done anything after the garage scene and I would've been satisfied. But this took it up another level. By far this is the best series finale I've ever seen.
The most powerful thing in this scene for me was watching El finally break. Everything she had ever done, everything she had ever been through, not once did any of it bend her devotion to the cause that she believed in. Even when she chose to act against orders or to act against what her superiors had intended she was always a mountain of Will Power. But then she sees Paige and it all falls apart. The cold professional shell shattering under the weight of a broken hearted mother.
Tbh, she had it coming for veeery long time. Henry was absent from her life. She kept lying to Paige even when she was a part of all this. Once Paige told Elizabeth that she and Philip were taking care of each other more than they take care of them (the kids). They neglected their children. I'm glad Paige stepped out of that train. That was the slap that woke Elizabeth from her brainwashed sleep. So she never wanted kids and Motherland was more important than anything, there was this greater good out there that she fought for so hard. Here you go, Elizabeth. Everything you believe.

just saw this episode yesterday and I hav to say it was the end of a beautiful beautiful journey. The scene where stan confronts the Jennings was acting at its peak, it wa the moment I waited for the whole 6 seasons and it was so so worth it
Without question, one of the greatest series-ending moments. The elements melding together, Omg, Keri Russell's panicked look, the emotional gut-punch she delivers, Matthew Rhys racing to comfort her. The music! Heartbreaking! And Paige's poignant look, and final stroll into the unknown... And the question of "was it all worth it?" Just, wow. Well done.
Watching it now,this scene was amazing!!!!!! How the music synced with Elizabeth grabbing the window and pretty much trying to claw to paige is just....wow! Then,Philip being phillip runs over to her.

Actually, she could have survived very well. She is young, a kid really, an American citizen, and she wants to live in the US, i.e. the only country she had ever known. I can imagine her finding her brother and neighbor who took him in, being debriefed by the FBI, and then even being offered a job. The information she had was invaluable to the American authorities, especially since it was still the Cold War. Having lived in that era myself in Europe, I can tell you (assuming you are younger than I am - lol) that people didn't have a clue that the Soviet Union would be history in 10 years. Paige would have been an excellent informant to the US, which would have also been her bargaining chip. Remember her father warned his friend that his wife was probably a Soviet agent, so they would have been able to destroy that network. People like Paige, but also sleeper agents like the very real Jack Barsky who was only discovered in 1994, when the Soviet Union was no more, were extremely valuable. The two kids were pissed enough at their parents to spill the beans. I'm sure Paige may have ended up becoming an FBI agent if she would have been able to persuade them that she was on the American side. I doubt the CIA or NSA would have ever given her clearance though to work for them. Their parents would have tried to contact them once the Soviet Union was no more, to arrange to see them, etc., although I doubt the kids would have ever wanted to have anything to do with them, understandably so too.
I was looking forward to this episode for years, the moment Stan would find out and what would happen considering how close of a friend he is. The thrill and excitement!! Instead I just felt depressed the whole episode and for days afterwards, even knowing the terrible things Phillip and Elizabeth did I still feel something horrible in my gut when they saw their daughter for the last time.
When I first saw this show ready to premier and the actors in it I signed on immediately but never thought it would turn into a love affair. From the pilot until this episode. I'm Gona miss this so much.....Sigh.
Something I just noticed prior was Paige walking thru the train car and Philip can't help but look at her walk by. Elizabeth doesn't even move when Paige passes her however. But when she sees Paige outside the train, her reaction is arguably more emotional than Philips.
Plus, she's been dealing with the fact that her parents (her mother, particularly) has lied to her her entire life about everything. She can't leave with them. To do what? Live in Russia? She can't speak the language. She doesn't trust them. It sucks for her, but she had to get off that train.
Your making her sound more noble an innocent than she deserves. She’s a quitter, she lacked the full understanding/commitment needed to do anything worthwhile. Not saying that Elizabeth was right to lie but at the same time deep down she new that Paige couldn’t be trusted. Paige made her bed and doesn’t want to sleep in it. She stays ok that’s cool but let’s face it she lacks the skill/strength to make it. Stand going to have to turn her in then what? The only one out of the kids I feel sorry for is Henry.

Imagine finding out that the only reason your parents had you was for their cover as agents of your enemy country. Paige has always wanted to belong since she started realising she couldn’t really trust her parents. First the church. Then she got close to the kgb, which is another wrong on her parents part. They’d constantly tell her it’s a hard life but they’d (particularly Elizabeth) would always deny the hard truths so how could Paige ever really make an informed decision? She was told my Elizabeth that she’s be saving the world which is why Paige claimed to be ready. But in the garage when talking to Stan he revealed how her parents (Elizabeth) killed the two people in the same home as their child. Getting off the train was really one of the ONLY decisions Paige made completely on her own with no outside influence. At the end of the day she’s an American Child (only 20 so still very much a child)
But I don't see them mentally abusing there kids. Not saying they were the warmest parents ever to grace the screen but abuse is taking it very far. The whole family dynamic was insane because Paige couldn't trust her parents but at the same time, her parents and rightly so couldn't trust her. For her parents, it was a mix or protection as well, plausible deniability. I understand she's young but she's an adult as well. Ok, so she stays in the States then what. What's her next plan? She made/makes the decision without understanding the fallout it was fine when she was a tween/teenager but comes to stop giving the girl slack. The only kid on here is Henry and he should get the slack.

The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, this FX is so good at ending shows and giving their main characters fitting poetic endings. Vic Mackey, big man on campus who loved being on the streets being tied to a desk and disgraced, Jax going out exactly the same as his father, Philip and Elizabeth leaving every part of their life in America behind including their children. It's so fucking good I love it
I don't know...Raylan Givens came out pretty much on top. Boyd was in prison, he got his job in Miami back, good relationship with his daughter, finally found where Ava ran to. I take your meaning, though. Had to throw that in because Justified is so good. I think FX is an underrated network myself.
Imagine realizing you just lost both your children to supposedly help your country. It must be devastating and while the show is a fictional story, this probably happened to so many families and continues to happen. All that so a few people can feel their country is superior over another country and its people. That can not be the purpose of our existence on this planet and quite frankly, it shouldn’t be. I absolutely loved this show and it humanizes the people who have and still are making personal sacrifies in real life all around the world, and we will likely never know their names and their stories.
What's really powerful about this scene is look at how broken Elizabeth is. She always let her ideology guide her to do some terrible things but here when she sees Paige she looks like a helpless child, it really breaks her.
This is probably one of the most moving scenes I have ever watched in my life. I always wanted them to do more with the show after this though. Kids growing up in America, them living in Russia and see how Martha did. Maybe even how Stan ended up. Having said that, it is probably a good thing they didn't.. Absolutely Loved this Show!
I just finished the series. I was blown away by this scene. In spite of working for 'the cause' of the Soviet motherland, at the moment of truth she didn't see how future in the USSR.

I only recently got around to watching this series. Never watched it when it actually aired, though I kept hearing how good it was. I was very glad Paige did this. I know Philip and Elizabeth loved her. But if she went with them, Paige's life would never be her own. I like to think she and Henry reunited, and with Stan's help, were cleared of suspicion. Then they could start again together.
So sad so sad it is over and when we know the future of the USSR...I could not help crying,6 seasons back in the 80s, and to finish a very good choice the U2 song during this farewell scene.Thank you The Americans.

I broke down when I saw Paige standing there. Absolutely heartbreaking. This is the finale the show needed and deserved. Of course this show didn't end with death and explosions. That's never been what it's about. This is the perfect ending: I never would have predicted it, but i can't now imagine the show ending any other way. This has always been a show about trying to preserve fraying relationships in a cold world, and in the end, the only relationship that survives for these two is the relationship with each other.
This scene is the most shocking thing I've seen on TV since _Breaking Bad;_ it nearly made me cry when I first saw it. It's really a testament to how top-notch the writing and acting are when there's not a single word spoken whatsoever in a scene this affecting.
One of the single greatest TV scenes of all time. No question. I got a rush of chills through me when I saw Paige on the platform and the song crescendos with Elizabeth's own realisation. I think what makes it even more top tier though is that some had almost certainly, like I, guessed that Paige would be on the platform. Except with Border Patrol. Never in a million years did I see her voluntarily leaving her parents behind, amazing character development. What a show.
Let’s not forget in this episode that neither Oleg nor Pastor Tim ratted out Philip or Elizabeth when given the chance by Stan. This bought them enough time perhaps instead of having the whole FBI on them, they just had the confrontation with Stan in the parking garage later that night when they could reason with him.
Years later and I still come back to this scene. So powerful that it pops into your mind years later.

I love how in this show there was never any glamour in the work they do. A lot of spy movies you have beautiful women, cool gadgets, awesome fight scenes and there’s always a happy ending with the hero proverbially riding off into the sunset but not this snow. There’s no happy ending, there’s no riding off into the sunset with a job well done, the last thing Philip and Elizabeth see in America is their daughter staying back in America while they go back to a country that isn’t the same one they left so many years before. They most likely will never speak to or see their children ever again and that punishment is worse than getting caught by the FBI.
No other moment I’ve ever seen on a TV show took my breath away the way that this scene did. What a punch to the gut. Bravo.

They literally could've done anything after the garage scene and I would've been satisfied. But this took it up another level. By far this is the best series finale I've ever seen.
The most powerful thing in this scene for me was watching El finally break. Everything she had ever done, everything she had ever been through, not once did any of it bend her devotion to the cause that she believed in. Even when she chose to act against orders or to act against what her superiors had intended she was always a mountain of Will Power. But then she sees Paige and it all falls apart. The cold professional shell shattering under the weight of a broken hearted mother.
This is the worst break, but she does kind of break a bit when she has to betray Young-Hee.
Tbh, she had it coming for veeery long time. Henry was absent from her life. She kept lying to Paige even when she was a part of all this. Once Paige told Elizabeth that she and Philip were taking care of each other more than they take care of them (the kids). They neglected their children. I'm glad Paige stepped out of that train. That was the slap that woke Elizabeth from her brainwashed sleep. So she never wanted kids and Motherland was more important than anything, there was this greater good out there that she fought for so hard.
Here you go, Elizabeth. Everything you believe.

Without question, one of the greatest series-ending moments. The elements melding together, Omg, Keri Russell's panicked look, the emotional gut-punch she delivers, Matthew Rhys racing to comfort her. The music! Heartbreaking!
And Paige's poignant look, and final stroll into the unknown... And the question of "was it all worth it?"

Watching it now,this scene was amazing!!!!!! How the music synced with Elizabeth grabbing the window and pretty much trying to claw to paige is just....wow! Then,Philip being phillip runs over to her.

Actually, she could have survived very well. She is young, a kid really, an American citizen, and she wants to live in the US, i.e. the only country she had ever known. I can imagine her finding her brother and neighbor who took him in, being debriefed by the FBI, and then even being offered a job. The information she had was invaluable to the American authorities, especially since it was still the Cold War. Having lived in that era myself in Europe, I can tell you (assuming you are younger than I am - lol) that people didn't have a clue that the Soviet Union would be history in 10 years. Paige would have been an excellent informant to the US, which would have also been her bargaining chip. Remember her father warned his friend that his wife was probably a Soviet agent, so they would have been able to destroy that network. People like Paige, but also sleeper agents like the very real Jack Barsky who was only discovered in 1994, when the Soviet Union was no more, were extremely valuable. The two kids were pissed enough at their parents to spill the beans. I'm sure Paige may have ended up becoming an FBI agent if she would have been able to persuade them that she was on the American side. I doubt the CIA or NSA would have ever given her clearance though to work for them. Their parents would have tried to contact them once the Soviet Union was no more, to arrange to see them, etc., although I doubt the kids would have ever wanted to have anything to do with them, understandably so too.

I was looking forward to this episode for years, the moment Stan would find out and what would happen considering how close of a friend he is. The thrill and excitement!!
Instead I just felt depressed the whole episode and for days afterwards, even knowing the terrible things Phillip and Elizabeth did I still feel something horrible in my gut when they saw their daughter for the last time.
When I first saw this show ready to premier and the actors in it I signed on immediately but never thought it would turn into a love affair. From the pilot until this episode. I'm Gona miss this so much.....Sigh.
We badly need a follow-up movie or single season addition. If Dexter can do it, why not The Americans?

Something I just noticed prior was Paige walking thru the train car and Philip can't help but look at her walk by. Elizabeth doesn't even move when Paige passes her however. But when she sees Paige outside the train, her reaction is arguably more emotional than Philips.

That scene on the platform was perfect because it's shows on how ready Paige is to let her parents go after all the things they went through.
Plus, she's been dealing with the fact that her parents (her mother, particularly) has lied to her her entire life about everything. She can't leave with them. To do what? Live in Russia? She can't speak the language. She doesn't trust them. It sucks for her, but she had to get off that train.
Your making her sound more noble an innocent than she deserves. She’s a quitter, she lacked the full understanding/commitment needed to do anything worthwhile. Not saying that Elizabeth was right to lie but at the same time deep down she new that Paige couldn’t be trusted. Paige made her bed and doesn’t want to sleep in it. She stays ok that’s cool but let’s face it she lacks the skill/strength to make it. Stand going to have to turn her in then what? The only one out of the kids I feel sorry for is Henry.

Francisco Elumba IKR. I love Philip and Elizabeth but if you really think about it, they mentally abused their kids for the longest. Imagine finding out that the only reason your parents had you was for their cover as agents of your enemy country. Paige has always wanted to belong since she started realising she couldn’t really trust her parents. First the church. Then she got close to the kgb, which is another wrong on her parents part. They’d constantly tell her it’s a hard life but they’d (particularly Elizabeth) would always deny the hard truths so how could Paige ever really make an informed decision? She was told my Elizabeth that she’s be saving the world which is why Paige claimed to be ready. But in the garage when talking to Stan he revealed how her parents (Elizabeth) killed the two people in the same home as their child. Getting off the train was really one of the ONLY decisions Paige made completely on her own with no outside influence. At the end of the day she’s an American Child (only 20 so still very much a child)
But I don't see them mentally abusing there kids. Not saying they were the warmest parents ever to grace the screen but abuse is taking it very far. The whole family dynamic was insane because Paige couldn't trust her parents but at the same time, her parents and rightly so couldn't trust her. For her parents, it was a mix or protection as well, plausible deniability. I understand she's young but she's an adult as well. Ok, so she stays in the States then what. What's her next plan? She made/makes the decision without understanding the fallout it was fine when she was a tween/teenager but comes to stop giving the girl slack. The only kid on here is Henry and he should get the slack.

FX is so good at ending shows and giving their main characters fitting poetic endings. Vic Mackey, big man on campus who loved being on the streets being tied to a desk and disgraced, Jax going out exactly the same as his father, Philip and Elizabeth leaving every part of their life in America behind including their children. It's so fucking good I love it
I don't know...Raylan Givens came out pretty much on top. Boyd was in prison, he got his job in Miami back, good relationship with his daughter, finally found where Ava ran to.

Imagine realizing you just lost both your children to supposedly help your country. It must be devastating and while the show is a fictional story, this probably happened to so many families and continues to happen. All that so a few people can feel their country is superior over another country and its people. That can not be the purpose of our existence on this planet and quite frankly, it shouldn’t be.
I absolutely loved this show and it humanizes the people who have and still are making personal sacrifies in real life all around the world, and we will likely never know their names and their stories.

What's really powerful about this scene is look at how broken Elizabeth is. She always let her ideology guide her to do some terrible things but here when she sees Paige she looks like a helpless child, it really breaks her.
This is probably one of the most moving scenes I have ever watched in my life. I always wanted them to do more with the show after this though. Kids growing up in America, them living in Russia and see how Martha did. Maybe even how Stan ended up. Having said that, it is probably a good thing they didn't.. Absolutely Loved this Show!

I only recently got around to watching this series. Never watched it when it actually aired, though I kept hearing how good it was. I was very glad Paige did this. I know Philip and Elizabeth loved her. But if she went with them, Paige's life would never be her own. I like to think she and Henry reunited, and with Stan's help, were cleared of suspicion. Then they could start again together.
So sad so sad it is over and when we know the future of the USSR...I could not help crying,6 seasons back in the 80s, and to finish a very good choice the U2 song during this farewell scene.Thank you The Americans.
