- I love seeing bright and innocent looking games frighten the unsuspecting player (me), and I wanted to share some of my favorite ways in which games have done this and see if anybody has any similar to share!

Creepy Sims 4 Fact: The total cost of all DLC is over $1000
yeah this is exactly why I decided not to buy any of them. Especially when I also saw that a year after I bought the game they made the main game for free.
So they just after you buying all the packs without actually being any different from the sims 1,2 or 3

To be fair to Skyrim, when I played it for the first time I thought it was a done deal when I killed Grelod and promptly forgot about it. A while later, I got the "We know" letter and I was thoroughly spooked. I didn't need in-game nightmares, I had some real ones that night
Lol same I had no idea that was related to Grelod (I definitely murdered npcs before her) so I was just creeped out not knowing what the letter was about at all.
I miss the days when I used to play Minecraft and everybody was like "Holly shit I saw Herobrine on my world"
12 year old me believed them with my whole soul
I had a spoopy experience while playing Oblivion on my laptop.
There's a quest you had to escort two brothers from their home to a city and everything was alright: me riding a horse, them two running after me. After a while some enemy trigged the brothers aggro mode and I got off my mount to help them... but theres was no monster around.
One of the brothers was still standing besides his dead brother, standing and smiling. When I went to get closer to check the body, my screen went black and crashed my entire laptop.
After shitting my pants and thinking I was living a creepypasta, I remembered that I hadn't connected my laptop in hours and coincidentally it turned off in this strange scene.
id shit myself lol
Benirus manor quest in Anvil. Going into the basement with the creepy symbol on the wall, creepy book and then getting locked inside with a lich always scared me even though I knew what was coming
Such a creepy quest hidden in a picturesque city. The chapel of Dibella close to it with everything that happens there makes it even darker 👀
Cool video idea. The first thing I thought of for scary things in un-scary games was the angry sun in Mario 3 😂… I would also mention Baldurs Gate 2, especially the quest line that starts off with serial killer trying to make armor out of human skin- and you can finish that armor! Horror can definitely hit harder when you aren’t expecting it.
I honestly love this topic. Like the extreme contrast between light and dark and unsuspecting horror in non horror games. In oblivion, there's such an obvious contrast between Oblivion gates/dungeons/caves and the overworld, which is this summery, inviting landscape. Mankar Camoran's Paradise is kind of symbolic of this too because it's actually like this beautiful looking hellish world where people are being tortured constantly. I love Oblivion's dark brotherhood questline, but yeah that ending feels bad. I like how they just recolored a zombie to be Lucien's body. The lack of detail and resemblance to his original model makes it more disturbing somehow.
This was something about Oblivion that I loved. It had such a colourful veneer yet if you just looked past that it quickly became apparent how messed up everything actually was.
My favourite horror moment had to be one of the fighter's guild quests in Oblivion where you wreck a town while under the influence. When you go back and discover the awful truth it's a real gut punch. Even worse when it's after midnight and the game glitches causing all the corpses to float around.
You forgot the gnomes from the Sims series, truly haunting 😂
There’s SO much gnome lore in the Sims - might have to dive into it here at some stage 😂
@@Angelikatosh Hell yeah you should! And if you are looking for a brightly coloured unintentional horror you should try Subnautica, Maybe even Fable 😀
I totally remember when first learning about the dark implications, places, Easter eggs, quests in wow. And thinking "dang that's dark". The scream in Naxxramas totally made me jump when first hearing it. Good times.
I definitely think the moon from Majora's Mask is the perfect example of something disturbing in a bright/innocent game. Though the whole game has a thread of the disturbing running through it.
Oblivion Dremora: YOU SHOULD NOT BE HERE MORTAL! YOUR BLOOD IS FORFEIT! YOUR FLESH IS MINE!
Morrowind is my favorite. Enemies are way more deadly, especially when you wander at night.
What a wonderful way to finish my week... enjoying this content :3
Yay I’m glad
the blood and wine expansion for the witcher 3 is so flamboyant, colorfull and then u get quest like Oleanna's story....and paired with ur trailer memories then u will get how badly will end. for me also Fear and Hunger, is already horror but since graphics is 16bit stile sprite ..u will always think how much bad and heavy this game can go in this game? ..and then u play and discover that ignorance is a blessing
Sims 4 is generally a lot tamer than the sims 2 or 3. But it does have some creepily unsettling stuff.
1. Summon Ocean Threat - mermaid sims can do an interaction on a swimming target sim, causing the target to be dragged into a black cloud, potentially killing them.
2. Ghost horse - in Chestnut Ridge, for a narrow window of time each night, across a collapsed bridge, opposite a abandoned shack and an unnamed equine grave, you can make out a ghostly silhouette of a horse, accompanied by echo-y neighing.
3. Pet cemetery - Brindleton Bay comes with it's own pet cemetery on it's island, which is nightly haunted by ghost animals. Some of the graves have cute custom epitaphs, but only one tomb has a specific premade ghost dog associated with it, Captain Whitaker, who is a part of the world's lore.
4. Underwater statues - In a few worlds, there are unexplained underwater statues. In particular, in the ocean off the coast of Tartosa, there's a stone head. It goes completely unexplained, and is noticeably different from anything else in the world, so it is assumed to be a prehistoric relic.
5. Lone grave - In Forgotten Hollow, there is a small, inaccessible island in the middle of a river. Apart from it being a human sim's grave, there is nothing at all indicating who it belongs to, how they died, how they are connected to the world/other sims, etc.
6. Eyes in the mine - Same as Sims 3.
7. Strangerville mystery - Conceptually, the whole mystery at the core of the Strangerville game pack is full of unsettling themes. A run down lab, a town crawling with agents, zombified citizens wandering the town after dusk and spouting cryptic dialogue, a story that has the town's problems get worse before they get better... It's honestly more of a pity that it's such a one-and-done pack that leans more into Stranger Things than Strangetown.
Oblivion gates were quite horrific for me, at least on my first playthrough, the hellscape vibes, burnt and tortured corpses, but the fact that at the beginning...the difficulty is so unforgiving, almost requiring a tone down, makes trying to survive the trials of Oblivion a fearfull horror in and of itself...
surprised nobody's mentioned "Doki Doki Literature Club!". the theme for this video is kind of that game's whole deal. less said the better though; playing it "blind" is best way.
Loved hearing about Warcraft in this. My favourite horror thing - truly terrifying in the scope of Warcraft - was C'thun's whispers throughout AQ40 and AQ20. For most of the Old Gods, the whispers would appear in the chat log, like any NPC dialogue. But for C'thun, it doesn't appear. You're just suddenly hearing "Your heart will explode" or "Your friends will betray you" being literally whispered into your head but you have nothing in the chat log to be sure it actually happened.
Feel like Enderal the skyrim mod did this well. Watching the intro alone u can see it right out the gate. Then after the story and subject matter are fully set out the atmosphere of the beautiful world feels eerie and haunting, especially on a 2nd playthrough where u are no longer seeing it face value.
Мне нравится направление твоих размышлений. На игры со стороны культурного контекста, а не в рамках контекста индустрии, мало кто смотрит
I couldn't really recall any colorful games other than those you already mentioned, however, when you talked about how horror in games can be at it's most effective, in those unexpected moments, I got reminded of Half-Life 2s Ravenholm level. Didn't expect a horror level in an action shooter, it's one of the most memorable parts of the game for me. Also, love darkshire and duskwood. So many memorable questlines like Mor'ladim, Bride of the Embalmer, Sven's questline (Morbent Fel), Legend of Stalvan and the Scythe of Elune.
I wonder if the opposite also exists : games that looks dark, twisted or depressing from the outside but actually have a very bright, wholesome, compassionate or at least bittersweet side. I don't play many games so I haven't got anything precise in mind but if anyone has examples I'd be glad to hear them.
Nekra Psaria, a browser based point and click. It looks dark and bleak but it gives me really cozy vibes.
Genuinely enjoy your content and look forward to new uploads. Keep up the awesome work!
Legend of Stalvan was peak classic questline. Spooky story of a "nice guy."
such a grand and intoxicating innocence
i'm digging the vibe. Im surprised you did not mention A Shadow Over Hackdirt quest
Glad you liked it! In reality there is soooo much more that could be said about Oblivion in this context, and perhaps one day I will make a full dedicated video just for that. In this video I just wanted to give several examples across several games to kind of highlight the effectiveness of the contrast when it comes to horror and any scary themes in these games(:
We really grew up on the same games, and yes I love hidden creepy bits in bright looking games! Love the channel too, binged every video in a row while playing Morrowind. Looking forward to see where you end up, cheers from Sweden :)
the zombies in oblivion really unnerved me if i had to fight id use a bow a fireball or make my brother do it
I love the darker elements of games like these and I'm pleasantly surprised to hear you do too. I hope you feel better soon.
Just found this channel and your presentation is great!
Nice video! Really liked you reading the vampire nightmares. I can easily imagine listening to the audio book read by you.
This was great!!
Absolutely love the channel amazing vids
The same is true for the two Zelda games that came out on n64. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. They are colorful like a kids show, but have some spooky and outright disturbing moments in them.
Great video! Innocent creepy or that cute little giggle when you think you're about to get murdered. It's the best kind of horror.
As far as creepy moments in colorful games go, Final Fantasy XIV has a long line of sidequests that'll always stick with me. You run into a small group of young adventurers early on and inspire them, only for them to attempt a dungeon that's far beyond their skills and their leader is mortally injured. Their healer was in love with him and his death broke her...later on in the game you encounter her in a harder version of the dungeon in which her beloved died as a self-made necromancer, who is not only raising an army of undead but also attempting a ritual to bring him back to life. Ultimately, you have to fight a twisted version of his disembodied head and afterward the mage is presumed dead. However, even later you can encounter her personally as a boss in a series of side dungeons where you find she's been trying ither methods of resurrection, and affer you deal with her here you're able to finally lay her to rest. Afterward, under certain weather conditions you can sometimes see her ghost in the town she lived in.
The thing that does it for me is that she was only 16 years old, and it was your actions as an adventurer taht inspired her and inadvertently led her down such a dark path. If you want to see her whole story in case I missed any details, you should look up Edda Blackbosom.
Elder Scrolls and Sims. Perfect.
If everything seems darker you might be turning into a moth priest. Gotta watch out with those scrolls.
Youre so real for this
I love your videos because you say the stuff that I think about but never say out loud haha. ❤
your outfit is so beatiful ! i love your fashion sense
Regarding darkness after reading too many Elder scrolls: I found going for long walks in the forest is the best way to clear your mind of intrusive or dark thoughts, just keep walking until you can't anymore and you will feel better the next day. Great video by the way.
Okay, you have got my subscription. I liked your clothes in the games thing, and this one convinces me.
i love your videos thank you sooo much for making them.. lol !
The first time I played Oblivion when I was like 14...I did the dark brotherhood questline by accident and I got so immersed I completed it all in like 2 days. And at the end of it (yeah...) I was so scared and shocked I legit uninstalled the game and didn't touch it again for years 🤣I also love horror in bright and non-horrory games, especially if it's creepy on a psychological level or if it has this otherworldy/weirdcore vibe? If it makes sense.
Great video!!
Sort of a reverse of this: there's the section in Bioshock 2 where you (spoilers) play as a Little Sister and you see things through her eyes, and what was a terrifying nightmare world flashes into a beautiful and lavish one and back again. You sort of get desensitised to the horror while playing the game, and getting the brief respite from it before suddenly being shunted back into it brings it into sharp relief and it's so much more horrifying as a result.
Jeez, Hackdirt in Oblivion still puts me on edge to this day, from that one guy in the village following you to the Brethren in the caves. Morrowind also spooked me at times, especially with the Sixth House shrines.
Personally I felt like Grelod being so awful was the point, the dark brotherhood questline almost seduces you into their brand of evil.
It's like, of course you should kill Grelod, she's a cruel and abusive woman in an unchallenged position of power. You did the right thing! But now you're locked in a hut and being told you have to execute someone. Well, maybe it's okay? One'a a coward, another brags about how many want him dead, the other is very rude. Surely you can make a decision that's still good? Neutral at worst! And now they're welcoming you into their family, sharing stories, there's a useful word of power on that wall over there, you killed a disabled man who was just waiting for his sister, you got some fancy new armour that lets you sneak and stab real good! They're sending you after a bandit leader who ruined a young woman's life, that's good too! She wants you to kill her adoptive sister purely out of spite, and... well... it's part of the quest. What's one more at this point?
Oblivion was more of a: do an evil thing and be welcomed by like minded people, and it does it well! But I remember having a moment in Skyrim where I really thought about the person my player character was, to do all of the things they'd done, and being kind of shocked how little I'd questioned what the dark brotherhood had asked me to do. And sure part of that is because "it's just a game" and I wanted the story and the shiny quest rewards, but I do think the writers did a good job of paving your road to hell with good intentions.
Excellent video, thank you! Not sure i completely agree that horror is welcome in bright/colorful games however there is a difference between genuinely trying to scare a player and "dark humor" ment for laughs imo.
Thank you so much!! My brain works in a strange way I guess, im a huge fan of this particular trope.. if it can be called that 😅❤
The HOMM5 siren caught me off guard
This feels like ASMR for geeks, and I’m here for it. You have a good voice for narration.
World Adventure was a really fun Expansion for the Sims 3. Really enjoyed the song learning, that created a new random ambiance whenever your sim cooks or bathes.
I think the Zelda series has plenty of examples of stuff like this, but two stand out in my childhood memories. In Ocarina of Time its The Bottom of the Well in kakariko village, and in Majora its definitely the farm stuff.
I loved this vid! 10/10
the reference here at 16:40, has cthun's voice line, which if you didn't play the raid would be alot creepier, but still cool easter egg, there is also another creepy area that was originally planned in the early development of deadwind pass, karazhan crypts, i don't want to spoil but was really fun and interesting seeing it for the first time in 2008 when i was still in school, there isnt a place that creepy in the game even till this day.(this was accessible by very specific character glitching at the time, but its a fully fleshed out area in deadwind pass that you can visit, or watch on youtube)
My scariest moment in a video game (not sure if anybody knows this but it’s basically club penguin except with pandas) was in Panda Panda, they had a haunted house with a graveyard, in the haunted house there was a secret room with a shadow of a giant scary panda who’s outline was illuminated by a neon green and there was a loud consistent screaming/roaring/growling noise (scared me so bad I begged my Mom to send me to narnia)
Saludos cordiales de parte de la comunidad en español❤
Holisss♥️♥️
Great idea for a video. Could do with a part 2? One with some morrowind stuff. Or just a sims one, there is plenty weird horror left there
Vampire the masquerade. For most of the game, you're fighting, sneaking, and talking. Not too different from elder scrolls in a way. But then you're given a mission to clear out a haunted hotel, and that entire quest feels like stepping into a horror film. There's no one to fight or talk to just voices, disappearing ghosts, and moving objects. Way creepier than anything that comes before or after in that game.
The Gnoll tents in Elwynn forest are made from humans, you can make out the faces. Also the Karazhan crypts are mad creepy!
I've been watching many Zelda videos lately. Many of the videos bring up what we thought as kids with these games: how does something so kid-friendly be so deceptively dark? And I didn't even play the intentionally dark game, Twilight Princess. Majora's Mask is both colorful and intentionally creepy, it's scariest parts are actually designed with high contrasting saturated colors. And the rest are colorful but not intentionally dark. Oblivion I put in the category of some Cartoon Network shows growing up. It's almost the cartoonish aspect that IS the creepiness. A more grounded style would feel more natural and grounded, setting a "creepy" mood, but it's just atmosphere, not something that messes with you like deceptive designs. Then there's games like Sim Park where you'll randomly have aliens, and the delivery is alarming at first. They destroy a lot and leave tech behind to write weird messages on the landscape.
I'm digging the vibe.
As silly as it sounds to say, I think some of the Pokemon games are perfect examples of this. For some reason, each one has one random place that's super creepy out of nowhere. I will never forget the one time I was playing Platinum late at night and I go into the old chateau to explore or whatever, and then you can faintly see the ghost girl on the other side of the wall. It's never explained, there's no warning, it just hits you out of nowhere--and I love it for that.
This video reminded me of the Edda storyline from FFXIV, When you first meet her, it plays out as a tongue in cheek joke of a MMO party falling apart cause the Healer is bad, but by the time you actually play out the whole story of Edda, it goes in an unexpected direction.
Oblivion learnt me to read I'm badly dyslexic
1:02 My personal solution to fading vision was to stand in a pitch black room without moving for the rest of my life.
17:04 wtf?? That's C'Thun's voice line! I had no idea they used it there too :O
It’s the scariest thing everrrr
Majorca’s mask be like this. Bright and cherry, but genuinely the most disturbing piece of media
I really enjoy eating my after work meal to your videos 👍
Hello Angelika. I was young when i play Oblivion. I remember one time exploring some ruins I found some skeletons and necromancers. I was attack and almost die but retreat. I didnt know but I was infeccted with vampirism. My character was an Argonian assasin/figther. So I choose continue with my pc being a vampire for the boost on my abilities, like with +100 stealth. I really got fun running through cities during day using healing spells triyng to not die by the sun.
Cool vid :) get well soon!
Glad you are a fellow Lucien LaStan! Lucien is the REAL Dark Father.
nice to hear you
the sims 1 burglar music is the most haunting jingle ever created
Do you know the Backstory of Splatoon and the Inklings/Octolings? On the outside it's bright, colorful and happy... but underneath that veneer, oh boy.
OMG I love your dress!!!!
What got me was not the dark brotherhood quest. He'll, I didn't even know that there was a dark brotherhood to begin with. What really got me is that my actions were observed. Hell, I was in the forest and killed someone by accident and apparently someone was watching me. I didn't think that was a mechanic. This game was suppose to be realistic, how the hell did they see me. That moment is what got me.
I once read what you describe here as the Dionysus Effect. That is, dark and horror elements being elevated by a previous state of colorful cuteness. If you like these kinds of games/stories/art, I recommend you look into "creepy cute". It's not exactly the same, as the horror and cute elements coexist, but still something worth checking out.
If you like deep lore, I encourage you to have a look at other Might & Magic games. I won't spoil anything in case you don't already know, but... yeah, the lore is insane. If you're looking for surprises, it definitely fits the bill! 😹💯
As for more examples, none come to mind aside from the well-known ones (DDLC and the like). And, well, my own game(s), but it's in development, haha. However, here's an example of a horror game that still manages to blindside you with a different kind of horror: Survival Crisis Z. By the title alone, you can probably guess the initial horror comes from zombies. The other one... is best experienced first hand... if you manage to make it work on modern hardware. 🐱👍
I love the red outfit Angelika! 💋
5:50 I'm not sure Call Me Kevin is an Elder Scrolls lore CZcamsr, haha
No, but his version of things is also fun 🤣
Fallout 3 and new vegas perfectly showcases how colour pallette responds to the tone
For some reason oblivion always creeped me out. Dont get me wrong, i love the game but it always felt kinda eerie to me. The guards were scary and the zombies! And the terror i felt the first time i discovered the hackdirt quest..
The quest that disturbed me the most in Oblivion was Vaermina's quest. I didn't expect Oblivion to be THIS creepy.
Oh an Shadow Over Hackdirt when a friendly shopkeeper from a bright colorful city gets abducted by creepy cultists from a run down village.
I would say my favourite moment would be in, I think it was either Fable 2 or 3. You enter this demon door and on the other side there's a snowy path, lovely trees, cozy colours and an adorable little house at the end of the path.
It's like walking into a holiday card almost.
Until you enter the cottage.
The first time I experienced it I gasped and was immediately on edge, expecting balverines to pop up.
Fable overall has quite alot of that juxtaposition between innocent-looking and horrifying.
Love these kinds of things in games. My favorite of all time is the Sealed Chamber in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. It scared the soul out of me as a kid
INFRA is a great example. You play as a structural analyst who takes pictures of structural hazards at industrial facilities and investigates some corruption schemes. There are no enemies to fight and you only have a camera and a flashlight. But there is a vibe at some place that something is more wrong than just structural flaws and negligence. With some effort and exceptional puzzle solving, you can access an otherwise unaccessible tunnel (B2 or B12, I don't remember) and... well, this is the most intense effect in a non-hostile environment I can think of.
You go through that very long tunnel, your flashlight only lights up a small area (and for some reason, it gets reduced even more, even if you had recently replaced batteries). It goes on and on, you hear some breathing that becomes heavier. I actually thought it was my character's breathing, I was thinking about stuffy air, dangerous gases. And then, after a long walk, you reach a dead end, a locked door. You turn around to check a side door that you had just passed and see Mörko.
An interesting fact is that this scene has a variation. I replayed it many times, experimenting. And then, when I invited a friend and showed it to her (I gave her the headphones, so I didn't hear any difference myself and was completely unaware), it unfolded in a different maner. I was going through the tunnel, prepared for what awaited us in the end, but suddenly Mörko appeared halfway in instead of in the end. Scared me more than my friend, I think.
My favourite is the triple twist of the witcher 3's Blood and wine... It felt like oblivion. Then it turned super dark, buut still fairy tales and innosence despite knowing this is still the witcher... so it's not able to be whimsical. But hey, if a game comes across as a bit like oblivion but more precise it's cool.
Cool video!
I remember playing the 2014 Thief game and going into I forget what level but there was a bunch of manikins and I left the room and came back and they had moved and it freaked me out. I stopped playing not long after that as I wasn't really enjoying the game all that much anyway.
I remember entering the sanctuary in oblivion for the first time, it was 1AM and it really caught me off guard
the sims burglary music gives me flash backs
gosh she's pretty, I hope she has the best day ever
Queen has posted
Was playing Oblivion with this video in the background
It sould be kind of cool to have a game where the game gets more fd up the more evil you do.
like it'll just jumpscare you during normal conversations or send demons your way when you're idling. or just random voices or footsteps. NPCs will break the 4th wall and tell you there is someone in your room behind you, etc..
your character will look like a ghoul and your food will turn rotten after you ate it like in that one Resident Evil game 😂
at the end it basically turns into Don't Starve Together at night, where you are constantly hunted by demons if you idle for too long, so you never get rest. the game will just randomly initiate hunts where you can't log out and if you die you loose 1 week of progress 😂
Didn't knew you like Twin Peaks, that explains your great taste in games!
The owls are not what they seem ✨
@@Angelikatosh But who is the dreamer? :)
I love ya Angelika, but hard disagree with the dark brotherhood being the best questline in Skyrim. Astrid basically destroys her own faction because she's jealous of a clown.
I haven't watched the video yet but A Hat in Time has a chilling level that is basically a horror minigame that is... terrifying, especially since the game is so colorful and child friendly. The first time I played it I was so shocked because it was really creepy for such a game!
EDIT: The name of the level is Queen Vanessa's Manor and it's one of my favorites!
I don't know if it was intended or a bug of pirate version, but sometimes, when I was completing Imperial city arena questline, in a final battle, when you unalive Grey Prince after getting asked for this (you need to do his side quest) it sometimes pops a message of Dark Brotherhood noticing your deed.
The NPCs in oblivion are still so scary to me lol
