    Minor point, the "giants" in old Norse mythology aren't actually "giants" the way we think of them. It's sort of a cross translation thing, but giants are are actually the same species as the gods, they're just a different family, so they're the same size as the gods, and completely humanoid.

      As a fellow Scandinavian, I've always loved our common history, and especially the old tales about the gods.
      Aside from the obvious bias we both feel, I think the nature of Norse mythology just resonates a lot more with humans than f.ex the old Greco-Roman gods!
      Now sure, as +Alex pointed out, the Greeks build massive impressive structures to their gods, and regarding ancient Philosophy, no one has contributed as much to Europeans way of seeing themselves, as the old Greeks did!
      But their gods just don't resonate in same way, the Norse gods is in touch with nature, they ARE nature!
      Their roots in old shamanistic religions is just closer to the entire human experience!
      Perhaps it also contributes to the fascinating mythology that it really is a melting pot, with Druidic and Shamanistic influences, coming from east, north east and south west and pantheons of gods from south and south east! If you dive deep into analyzing it, while looking at population movement it ---

    • @gaiusfulmen
      @gaiusfulmen Před 2 lety +1

      @@mohsh3946 This is late, but if you're still curious...
      Loki was chained up because he killed Baldur, or rather tricked someone into killing him. Loki is indeed a giant, which in Norse mythology are not the typical half-witted huge cannibals we might think of. They were a magical, powerful and intelligent race pretty similar to gods, which were themselves in several groups. The ones we know the most about are the Aesir, who lived in Asgard.
      Thor and Loki fought and quarreled all the time, but I wouldn't say they were truly enemies. Thor was generally a pretty hot-headed guy and Loki had a habit of tricking and cheating people. But things always seemed to work out between them, until later on. The death of Baldur was the final straw for the Aesir, including Thor. That's when they killed Loki's sons, chained him to a rock and made a snake drip acid onto his face endlessly.
      So at that point, yes, they were essentially enemies. It was said that Loki would someday break free and rally the giants to attack the Aesir alongside his other children, Fenrir and the World Serpent. Interestingly though, Thor and Loki don't actually fight in most accounts of Ragnarok. Odin is killed by Fenrir, Thor and the World Serpent kill each other, but Loki and Thor don't actually face each other to my knowledge.
