  • The pressure to be thin is threatening the lives of some women in China. Being thin has always been a cultural beauty standard for women in the country, but now it has become amplified across social media. As a new generation of internet users become exposed to the latest viral “skinny enough” challenges, such as the A4 waist challenge or collarbone coin challenge, more cases of eating disorders are being reported throughout the country. We speak to three Chinese women who have come of age in this environment and feel that perhaps there are different beauty standards in the West and in China.

In China, everyone is complaining they are not thin enough, not pale enough, not rich enough, not tall enough, not hot enough, not young enough, not smart enough etc. And Chinese judge each other constantly. If you think this is good, that girls should judge their weight constantly, and that mentality is attractive, just remember they are also judging your wallet, your height, your education all the time too.

When I was a pre-teen (early 2000s), I created a thinspo blog & really followed the lifestyle. Went through a long journey of crash dieting, fasting, purging, diet pills (esp the infamous phen-phen), fad diets, bullimia- everything. Im still friends with some of the girls that subscribed to my blog & we laughed about how weight obsessed we were when in reality we looked great back then. It was the early 2000s though, skinny was really in & my favorite super lowrise jeans. Back in those days, your upper-mid class parents sent you to fat camp if you were a little pudgy. (I went for two summers)
My ex pro-ana girls remember those ridiculous mantras:
"Nothing tastes as good as how it feels to be thin" "A touch [of food] on the lips is 10 pounds on the hips"
"Waking up thinner, is worth going to bed hungry"
    "Hunger hurts but starving WORKS"
"Because the pain of looking in the mirror (or on the scale) hurts more than starving"
I could write a book. Teens, dont do this. Now Im in my 30s with stomach acid issues & an out of whack metabolism. Just eat healthy and exercise. Plus the weight loss from starving isn't permanent.

One man even collected over 100 cook books during the experiment.

I'm sorry :( I think that such a noticeable difference between the average person's opinion in those two places only proves that beauty standards generally have nothing to do with what individuals actually find truly attractive and are really just ideas created by an outside force that individuals accept and refuse to challenge. You just proved that entire cultures of people will uphold standards that aren't even their own without question. The idea that a person can be pretty in one place and unattractive in another while looking exactly the same is pretty silly right? Lol

This is a huge thing also. I was made fun of, picked on, everything you can name just for being naturally skinny. I have a fast metabolism. Plus I'm tall, my body is mostly 65% legs. My doctor pretty much said, I could be tapping my finger and burning off everything I ate. I could eat and eat and eat and I was never "good enough" for others. My mom's friends actually started questioning her to ask if I was maybe anorexic, which I'm not but she swore up and down I never ate when I did. She knew I did! But then again she never sees what I do for her anyway, it's always she's right and everyone else is wrong. I've seen it like in real time how she denies and makes things up on the spot, and it's amazing how delusional a person can be. It's flabbergasting. Anyways, having to deal with that for years, and still dealing with it is maddening.
The on the flipside, I gained a little bit of weight because I got older it's natural plus I eat a little bit more than I used to because I workout and I don't like being hungry. I'm not a size 0 anymore, I'm like a size 3-4 depending on the fabric of clothing and the clothing brand and store it comes from. And my dad (67), who won't admit he has an eating disorder and is obsessed with being under 120 pounds. The weight in his 20s and teen years. He will turn around and start calling me fat. And that's maddening too!
I love food and love my body, I've gone through a crap ton of injuries and am thankful that it's carried me through every single one of them, but I'm super athletic and have always been considered a tomboy. But if someone has a problem with MY body, now and forever, it says more about them than me. And that's sad, especially if they're a grown ass adult. Thinking about all the damn girls I grew up with who picked on me for being skinny, my mom, and just whoever else, it's still makes me grit my teeth and gets on damn nerves how disgusting humans can be that they have to attack someone else about their weight because it's not to THEIR standards.

I used to lease student apartments at UT Austin and we had Chinese exchange students come for the summer. Every single one of their apartments had a scale in the kitchen (to weigh themselves) and a small food scale on the counter where they weighed out rice, etc. this was 10 years ago. The ability to be thin and controls one weight in their culture shows the ability to use self control, and other amiable traits in their culture. I’ve met so many Asian women who face extreme scrutiny about their weight. In American culture body standards ebb and flow but being thin has always been “in” just masked when we add things like BBL’s and implants. Ultimately the standard in most first world countries is to stay thin because food is plentiful. Whereas third world countries where food is scarce the body standards seem to be much more lax or based off of looking healthy and muscular. I grew up with 90’s Kate moss “heroin chic” weight being in. I developed an ED as did a lot of my peers and I am curious to see where culture leads as Gen Z seems to be more accepting of their bodies (not everyone but a decent amount compared to young millennials). Sadly women will always be held to a more rigid standard then men, as dad bods come into fashion and a man can look like a body builder or have a dad bod or extra meat on his bones and still be considered attractive. we see this in Hollywood and in our everyday lives. As someone who lost her health due to an ED and being hospitalized due to one, it’s not worth the Long term damage to your body. But having an ED isn’t about weight, it’s ultimately about being able to control something in your life wether it is your food or your weight.
Sorry for the Ted Talk. Just my two cents.

Whether fat or thin, her appearance is not a popular type in the whole China. If the time goes back 3000 years, You will see that there are dozens of different races in China, including short blacks and so on. Many people see on the Internet that some Chinese people eat dogs or snakes, even mice, and human placentas. These eating habits are almost only in Guangdong Province. The differences between different places are huge. My skin color is whiter than some Westerners. The average height of our local area is 1.78m, while Guangdong, Fujian and other southern areas may be only 1.68m, Most Chinese immigrants overseas also come from these regions. I eventually started to only eat once a day when I was in 8th grade and if I could estimate, my meal portion was less than 500 worth of calories. This lasted until the end of 9th grade when I opened up to my current friends(I only met them that same grade). And I honestly am grateful I did because after hearing what I went through, they made sure to help me regain my confidence and helped me go back to a healthy lifestyle. Asians having smaller frames imo is a myth. yeah they might be smaller than Black women and some Europeans but they're not as tiny as people expect and claim them to be. Perhaps diet is part of the reason. when I was a teenager ik this Chinese girl who was born and raised in the west and was a few years younger than me. well she was about 5'4 and not as skinny as these girls. she wasn't necessarily pudgy, but neither was she as skinny. she had a soft body (what Jennie from Blackpink looked like predieting basically) and in fact she was larger in size and statue than me - someone who's considered white and if there's any asian blood in me it's minuscule. for Europeans who're non-mixed esp from certain parts like nordic countries or Eastern European, they do tend to have larger frames (esp height). but generally it's not the standard imo. bc for ex, while lots of ladies in US are taller on average it's not the case here in canada. For reference I weighted 50kg at my skinniest, so that's very slim thighs and bony type of skinny arms. I've met other Asians, from Koreans to Chinese, some from asia others western-born or raised, and majority were larger than me (partly bc they were also taller). Nobody is born skinny we have to eat certain way to be skinny. so these Chinese girls aren't just thin effortlessly but through conscious eating and persistent exercise regimes.

Sometimes we rush to judge people for how they look without knowing if they have gained weight because of pregnancy, are fighting a disease or disorder, have a hormonal imbalance, have an injury that makes it hard for them to stay in shape, etc.

its true. online shopping is probably the most popular way for chinese people to shop for clothes, recently there was a post about clothes that a girl had bought where the seller apparently covered the original sizing label (S in the video) with a new one that accidentally peeled off (L). The size charts are also absolutely wild, like L sized pants with a 60cm waist circumference. people also talk about the ridiculousness of buying womens fashion items and having them arrive so small that it wouldnt even fit their kid siblings. Literally corner of society feeds on making women hate on their bodies, this isnt just a social media phenomenon (although social media definitely accelerates it) or a marketing strategy for dietary products, but a case that countless industries capitalize from.

If we have to much money they think where all that to good for everyone, if you have no money and poor, they judge us for that as well if you are to skinny they judge us for being to skinny, if you are fat they judge your ass for that to. I swear man you can never win. and trust me that effects you for example some jobs won't even hire you. And for example when I moved to America it's a whole 360 night and day, people judge you less belive it or not despite what people think of America for example if you try to get hired at a bank they not going to deny you for being to skinny, fat or ugly. It's so sad. I feel this is one of many reason why my country can't progress we don't work together we just criticize each other for what we have or not have. It's crazy. Obviously I'm not saying American people don't criticize and judge but it's not as extreme as other places. And I have been all over the USA. I swear if you are Mexican and accomplish something great your own people will judge you. But if an American does the same thing we say good job and congratulate them. This brings back so many memories for me. I grew up in China and only just left 3 years ago so that mentality still feels so familiar and fresh to me. Literally every, no joke, every single woman i've met in china had told me at least once that they're trying to lose weight/they're on a diet cause they want to look thinner etc. and of course i was one of them. Here is the reality:
Societally, women are valued based on their appearance while men are valued based on their power.
As a result, women who want to be valued go to great lengths to conform their appearance to societal ideals. In this case, the ideal is absurd and many women are hurt chasing value.
Men have a similar problem but it is much less visible for obvious reasons. Men chase value by trying to gain power. Working long hours, learning, or maybe participating in illegal activities.
There are many men hidden in the shadows who have no value. They are alone and people do not give them attention because it is not obvious that they are victims of society.

Men never really/have yet to/evolved. We're kinda still stuck as/in "industrial" workers/War-set/ mindset. Women constantly have to fight for their stake. In the US at least. Women had to fight to be given permission/the right to vote. To participate in the workforce. They were expected to raise a family take care of the home and work. Men have just been working. and working. and working(exploitation of each other and everyone they deem as less/women/minorities'). And as the work becomes less important and more of it is automated//hardly any meaningful work anymore that isn't making a handful of corporations mega rich. You end up with the depression and suicide rates and ease of falling victim to propaganda that we now see rampant not only in the US but worldwide. Men may be at the very end of the chore list in terms of humans as a species cleaning our act up and growing up out of our "teenage" phase as a species (greedy/careless/young and new in terms of our technology/we trash our home/environment) Men: Have been oppressors/leaders and dictators for a long long time. We just haven't moved on to a new phase for a while. At some point we will hopefully look inward towards family and environment and societal progress. Now, looking back at those photos, I was not as fat as they made it seem as I was actually in the best weight and form (I guessed because of my natural chubby cheeks that they called me fat for that, while the rest of my body was actually fit and slim). This greatly impacted my current state and I finally became super obesed, plus metabolism imbalance due to age and hormones as I work in shifting schedule. The pandemic made an impact too and being at home made me start gaining weight rapidly.
I'm struggling but doing my best to overcome this mental and physical state that I'm currently in, hoping it won't be too late to become healthy and fit again.

Asian women have rounder fuller face and tend to store fat easily in the face and overall body especially arms and belly.
Whereas caucasian women (typically russian and northern europe) can be thin and slim while being in good health. (being taller helps a lot on proportion since asian women are shorter and thus appear proportionally bulkier).
The thing is that the healthy body fat range is different on avg for asian women and caucasian northern europe women.
Its all about genetics and proportions. You could be 90 lbs (40kg) and still look fat cuz of your proportions and body fat distribution. Asian women store more fat in the face , belly and arms whereas as caucasian (north europe) women store more in the hips, thigh, and b reasts (that's why the average cup size is D or larger in europe and AA in asia).
Asian girls are not fatter they just store it in different places.
3:34 is the perfect exemple of looking fat while being a very low weight. She has no double chin but her wide face and proportions makes her look chubby.
Conclusion: have realistic body goals standards depending of your race. It's like african women wanting to have caucasian or asian hair, just never gonna happen. Same goes for body fat.

Where is the fun of being a kid nowadays?
They suffer so so much because of social media.
They r slaves of selfies and pursuing someone else's body.
It breaks my heart to see them suffer so much.
Hard time for growing nowadays. hard times.

I have mad respect for the Zumba teacher. She's a prime example of how you should see yourself. She is definitely not fat. But not perfectly skinny either. She's healthy. Seeing her dancing and laughing in the end made me so happy. Thats real beauty! And remember its not about sizes or shapes. Its about balance. Eat healthy. Work out. Take care of your body ! Its the only one you have. Be happy .

Some Asian countries are absolutely ruthless about beauty and weight. The goal is to be as thin as you can while looking forever youthful, when in reality the less you weigh the more you age, it's just not obtainable. Fuller bodies and faces usually look more youthful than those starved of important nutrients. Social media has absolutely ruined beauty standards and sadly I feel like it's just getting worse and worse.

Oh I remember my trip on body dysmorphia symptoms when some of my cousins mocked me one christmas because they saw me sideways when I was 11-12yo and got chubby like many children do. First time I got conscious of how "disgusting" I was, and then it morphed into not looking manly enough. There's still some remnants of that damage.
The worse part is that you see a ton of guys claiming this doesn't affect men while most surely they're the kind of dudes that get in the sack with tshirt and socks on because he's too afraid that a woman notice his big ass nips, bewbs or small feet.

As a fat person who has suffered with PCOS symptoms since I was 11, when I first arrived in China I was so taken back. People in the street just straight-out called me ugly and pig. I’m glad that I’m so thick-skinned and know my worth past my weight. My students said it was ‘because fat people are seen as greedy and rude’ but said that knowing me changed their perspective of fat people. You’ll realise being around Chinese people for less than 5 minutes that the most used words are 好看 good looking,不好看 not good looking,美 beautiful ,丑 ugly. Everything is quantified in how it looks. Extremely judgemental society, especially with young women. I can separate myself from it, maybe because I’m a foreigner and I’m not integrated into the culture to an extent. But I really feel for many young Chinese women who are brought up with this pressure.

@Anna I had started my menstrual cycle at 10 years old, and immediately had some hormonal imbalances and PCOS symptoms. The biggest symptom was very fast and unexpected weight gain and abdominal pains. I wasn’t properly diagnosed until a few years after because my doctor thought I was too young to have it, but lucky me (or unlucky me I guess haha). There isn’t enough research and knowledge on it.

I thought to myself the other day how hard it would be for someone to be my size in asia. Im half chinese and half egyptian but american born and raised. Ive been an athlete for most of my life and my body type is nowhere near skinny. My sister on the other hand is tall and very skinny like 5'7 and 100 pounds. Even though in america there are definitely insane beauty standards, they are still not nearly as bad as they are in Asia I believe. I feel like im an average size and had a doctor say I would be overweight since Im half asian and would need to use an asian BMI but that makes no sense. There are plenty of asian women that are stick figures but face so much pressure because of how much more severe society is at commenting on peoples body in China. Thats my two cents. Anyways this sucks, I really hope things can change. Id imagine its extremely depressing for all women to be in this society including skinnier women.

There’s a negative word “普信男” primarily used by female internet user. It literally means “man being ordinary and confident” and the usage is to attack man that is average on pretty much every aspect especially their appearance/stylishness/wealth/education while still feeling good and confident about himself. This is awful.

    • @NotSure109

      @@Ninja-gt3zi It's a compound word.
      PU meaning 普通,ordinary.
      xin meaning 自信,confidence.
There isn't a single English term for it, the sentence provide in OP's comment is a good translation though. The connotation is that the man bearing the confidence is not worthy of his self-esteem, and that healthy self esteem for this man is arrogant to the point of a strong fault.

What is the point of trying to redefine the word "beauty". Generally what beauty means is something that is visually attractive or pleasing to the eye. You can be "nice", "comfortable" and "healty" even if you are not visually pleasing to the eye. Then let those merits be merits on their own. We do not have to re-define the word beautiful to make people feel better about themselves. A certain amount of people have the trait that their visual appearance is pleasing to the eye for the general population. Those people are considered beautiful. Why can we not let them have that? Other people are smart, funny, caring etc. etc. and those are also good traits and equally if not more important in a human being. Let those traits and the people who have them live on those merits. Everyone does not have to be beautiful, thats like child competitions where everyone gets a medal so everyone feels equally happy.

I do truly believe i would be better and worth more and prettier if i was thin. I need it. There isn’t a day where i don’t think about my weight.
