Addressing a couple of the most ridiculous comments. Anyone who thinks that this channel is pro gay, simply because I highlighted the unchristian behaviour of Stephen Anderson, needs to develop their listening skills and should look at the content that this channel has produced. I am very clearly against homosexuality and only the most ignorant will try to claim otherwise. See the links below.

I still see his stuff around online quite a bit. When it appears like the world is upside down, it's pretty easy to relate to what Pastor Anderson says sometimes on other subjects. Unfortunately, in my opinion, his sermons lead more to anger, and then you become consumed by it. I wish I was at peace like you. I'm so lost right now that even watching this video puts me in tears to see this priest's confidence in Orthodoxy and his calmness. I don't even know where to start. I grew up Protestant, but feel a pulling towards Orthodoxy or Catholicism, but I'm so OCD about details, I don't know which is the "right" direction. How did you decide? Sorry for the long response, btw.

@@WhiteStag777 I haven't been baptized yet but historically there's really no way for me to refute that Orthodoxy is the original church Jesus Christ established. I was convinced by looking at the history. Protestantism came 1500 years after Jesus. So am I to really believe God got it wrong for that long? Also the Orthodox Church has Apostolic succession. Every priest and bishop can historically be linked back 2000 years ago to the Apostles through ordination. There's really no way around it in my opinion

As an ex-IFB (now Catholic), this is true. But, I also want to caution against separating the IFB and NIFB . They think and act exactly the same way. Each clique within these movements have their own standards in which they judge the salvation of all others. There have been entire splits over doctrine such as the blood atonement, Jesus suffering in hell, KJV-Onlyism, reprobate doctrine, etc. This is how the NIFB (Anderson's clique) was formed. But make no mistake, each clique is just as devout and radical about their piece of the pie.
I once got into an argument with multiple members of the IFB church I attended over homosexuals. Long story short, they believed that if a person (especially a man) even so much as had an inclination towards the same sex, especially if they have acted on it, they are forever condemned and unforgivable; destined to hell. It didn't matter if they truly repented, remained celibate, etc. They were reprobate and as such, cast aside. Yes, the death penalty for LGBT is almost universally supported by the IFB and NIFB as well. And yes, most IFB churches I know of (especially the one I was a member of) would kick these people out; even if they earnestly repented. This was the first arrow to pierce the IFB vail for me.
Of course, most of the IFB/NIFB literally hold an idolatrous view of the KJV Bible. For as much as we hated Catholics (specifically Roman Catholics) and lambasted them for their
"idolatrous" statues, icons, "Mary worship," etc... we held deeply rooted views on the KJV being the only Word of God, all other translations being works of satan. We had entire songs praising the KJV, entire sermons dedicated to the dangers of other translations, entire Bible studies comparing other translations, entire conferences "standing on the KJV," and even a traveling historical KJV museum. The King James Bible is absolutely an idol to many in the IFB movement.
Lastly (for this comment anyways, I could go on and on), we were the judges of salvation. We judged our own salvation: Is Jesus Christ your Lord and savior? Yes? Saved (unless you are a reprobate of course, or if you "fall out" later, maybe you were never saved to begin with). But wait, it's not really that simple. A more accurate representation would be: Is Jesus Christ your Lord and savior? AND do you understand that it's only your faith in Him (as we define it with our KJV) that will save you? Not baptism, not other sacraments, not the Church, etc (despite those being acts of faith). We would bring this message to the doors of everyone in town, converting folks from all religions, denominations, etc. Those we did not convert, we often condemned. And because we had such a strong assurance of our own salvation, we would only pray for individuals we "knew" weren't saved to be saved. (Speaking to the point of this video, prayer was simply: give thanks, ask for others, ask for yourself; keeping it all short and simple, straight to the point, God already knows what you want, but we have not because we ask not. So prayers were a bit more than what some here claim, we did in fact give thanks and pray for others... but it's nothing like Catholic/Orthodox).
I mean again, I could go on and on. But in short, pray for these folks. Many of them truly believe they are saving souls and doing God's will. Many of them were seekers of the truth (that's how they ended up in the IFB). I believe many of them would convert if they earnestly sought the truth once again.

And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. - Matthew 6:7
We have an example of just how great a distance there is between the wordy and the humble and simple prayer in the story of the Pharisee and the publican. The prayer of the Pharisee vaunting himself in his abundance of words was rejected. The humble and contrite publican, on the other hand, asking forgiveness for his sins, came away more justified than the selfboasting Pharisee. In this we find fulfilled what was written: “The prayer of the humble penetrates the clouds,” reaching God who is ready to hear the request of the one who prays. .

      For the same verse.
You see that when He was discoursing of almsgiving, He removed only that mischief which comes of vainglory, and added nothing more; neither did He say whence one should give alms; as from honest labor, and not from rapine nor covetousness: this being abundantly acknowledged among all. And also before that, He had thoroughly cleared up this point, when He blessed them that hunger after righteousness.
But touching prayer, He adds somewhat over and above; not to use vain repetitions. And as there He derides the hypocrites, so here the heathen; shaming the hearer everywhere most of all by the vileness of the persons. For since this, in most cases, is especially biting and stinging, I mean our appearing to be likened to outcast persons; by this topic He dissuades them; calling frivolousness, here, by the name of vain repetition: as when we ask of God things unsuitable, kingdoms, and glory, and to get the better of enemies, and abundance of wealth, and in general what does not at all concern us.

    Father, bless! Christ has risen!
As a recent convert, the Jesus Prayer brings me relief from temptations - I run to it, to the mercy of our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ. When the blind man cried for mercy, Jesus healed him. When Peter cried out for Christ to save him on the water, Christ rescued him. In the parable of the Pharisee and tax collector, the latter prayed to God for mercy, and Jesus called him justified before God. All three men cried for mercy from different places of need as well - God showed mercy in every case. Glory to God.
Protestants don’t truly know how merciful God is toward us, because they don’t know how much God loves us. At least, when I was a Protestant, I didn’t know either. I looked at God as if He was angry with me and was required by His holiness to punish me for my sins. Mercy was a plea to not be punished. Now, my plea for mercy is due to His love for me, and mine for Him. I know He desires to save me, not punish me.
He desires to make me see(like the blind man); He desires to have me trust Him and walk on stormy water(like Peter); He desires me to rely on Him for mercy for my sins(like the tax collector) - it’s as if God’s mercy is His invitation to us to participate in Theosis.
Unfortunately, this pastor clearly does not know God’s mercy and love. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on Pastor Stephen and his flock.

If repeating the prayer has a good purpose, then by definition it isn't vain. We have countless spontaneous vain thoughts entering our awareness throughout the day. Like Martha we busy or concern ourselves with too many vain things when only a few things are needed. The Jesus Prayer can discipline the mind to gain control over all those vain thoughts. It can be used to quiet the mind of vain thoughts in preparation for quiet or hesychastic prayer. Perhaps when Martha's sister was sitting at Jesus' feet, he was teaching her about inner quiet prayer in the soul.

    • @markpatterson2517
      @markpatterson2517 Před měsícem

@@HaggisOfDeath Babbling (battalogeo) repetitive words are vain prayers when they are used as magical formulations or charms to get what you want, as if repeating words will force the deity to hear or provoke the deity to answer. Jesus taught God as a good Father provides for his children and knows what his children need. Besides addressing him as Father (our Father who art in heaven), giving him honor (hallowed be thy name), cooperating with his will (thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven), repentance and asking for forgiveness (forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation), a direct humble petition like 'give us our daily bread' is enough to get his attention. Many use the Jesus Prayer in preparation for contemplation or inner quiet prayer or stillness in the soul in the presence of God. It's difficult to do this since the mind is in the habit of rattling on and on. A short repetitive prayer can focus the mind, dispel vain thoughts, and bring it to rest. Once that is done, then the prayer itself also ceases as it served its good purpose. To repeat the prayer over and over again in order to get God to hear and answer a petition, as if it has magic-like power, would be vain.

@@HaggisOfDeath I personally don't use the prayer when I contemplate, but I understand why others would use it in order to focus their attention away from all the vain chattering occuring in the mind which steals the awareness away from God. If they mean what they say that Jesus is Lord and they require his mercy, then it isn't a meaningless mantra like any old word or sound would do. If said from the heart, it has meaning directed towards Christ, but it also serves as a mental discipline for a further good purpose to become fully aware of God for prayerful communion. Like I said it ( and its repetition) finally gets put to rest also. In this context I doubt Christ regards it as a violation of his principles on how to pray and would therefore find it offensive. I imagine some who repeat the prayer use it wrongly like a charm, thinking it has some intrinsic power of its own which Jesus has to regard. But we have to be careful not to become literalists when applying his principles on prayer or any of his teachings, otherwise we will be like the pharisees who thought that literally following the Law without the spirit or principles behind the rules was the correct way to apply the rules of the Law.

Thank you Father for your gracious words of the gospel. Your comments, although about "Pastor" Anderson, actually apply in so many other areas in our lives as we seek to follow Christ.

We need only to pray for this man. May God guard our hearts from pride and help us to see our own sins unto a life of repentance.

Bless father. Thank you for your service to the faith and to our Lord. These people who take the name of Christ in vain must be rebuked sharply. This is why I accepted the orthodox faith. It withstands any criticism as it is the truth gifted to us from God himself. May he have mercy on us and continue to bless our lives in the name of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.

I came out of conservative Protestantism to Holy Orthodoxy 20 years ago. What that preacher said is very much in line with what they say. The whole concept of open exegesis is a major stumbling block to humility. And the dry legalism of Protestantism is kryptonite to any kind of spiritual ascent. These aren't the only problems in Protestantism that I know about, and I've discovered a few things since which have shocked me, but I'm not that interested in it any more. The Orthodox faith is a full-time job, far more important than reinventing the wheel (the writings of the Holy Fathers and the Lives of the Saints contain just about everything you could ever need to get yourself pointed towards God, I reckon). May God open the eyes of the heterodox, so that they, too, may find the fullness and riches of Holy Orthodoxy.

Catechumen (Antiochian) - I just returned from an enlightened evening of “Orthodox on Tap” and I had a moment to find this in my feed. I will pray for this man to find his way and find True Christianity. in my evening prayers tonight. My heart is heavy watching that. Whatever that was, it was not any form of Christianity I have known. The Orthodox path is Love, words and thoughts are powerful and the scriptures are Art. Upon ages of ages - Amen
