  • The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. Pure sound!
The SR71 Blackbird is a long-range, high-altitude, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed by Skunk Works, a division of the Lockheed Corporation. It was operated by both the United States Air Force (USAF) and NASA.
The SR-71 was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft during the 1960s by Lockheed's Skunk Works division. American aerospace engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the aircraft's innovative concepts. The shape of the SR-71 was based on that of the A-12, which was one of the first aircraft to be designed with a reduced radar cross-section. At one point, a bomber variant of the aircraft was under consideration, before the program was focused solely on reconnaissance. Mission equipment for the reconnaissance role included signals intelligence sensors, a side-looking airborne radar, and a photo camera; the SR-71 was both longer and heavier than the A-12, allowing it to hold more fuel as well as a two-seat cockpit. The SR-71 designation has been attributed to lobbying efforts by USAF Chief of Staff General Curtis LeMay, who preferred the SR (Strategic Reconnaissance) designation over simply RS (Reconnaissance, Strategic). The aircraft was introduced to operational service in January 1966.
During aerial reconnaissance missions, the SR-71 operated at high speeds and altitudes (Mach 3.2 and 85,000 feet, 25,900 meters) to allow it to outrace threats. If a surface-to-air missile launch was detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate and outfly the missile. On average, each SR-71 could fly once per week due to the extended turnaround required after mission recovery. A total of 32 aircraft were built; 12 were lost in accidents with none lost to enemy action. During 1988, the USAF retired the SR-71 largely for political reasons; several were briefly reactivated during the 1990s before their second retirement in 1998. NASA was the final operator of the type, retiring their examples in 1999. Since its retirement, the SR-71's role has been taken up by a combination of reconnaissance satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs); a proposed UAV successor, the SR-72 is under development by Lockheed Martin, and scheduled to fly in 2025. The SR-71 has been given several nicknames, including "Blackbird" and "Habu". As of 2021 the SR-71 continues to hold the official world record it set in 1976 for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft, previously held by the related Lockheed YF-12.
The SR-71 was the world's fastest and highest-flying air-breathing operational manned aircraft throughout its career.

The MIG 25 was capable of 3.2 for brief periods and that plane was a far cry from this. My guess closer to 3.8. Problem was flaming out at extreme speed. I think design maxed it out. Redesigned air intakes probably would have permitted higher speeds.

Not enough is mentioned about the efforts of Pratt & Whitney in designing and building the mighty J-58 turboramjet engines. The engines were able to put out sea level thrust at 90,000 feet, which is why the Blackbird was able to fly so fast and maintain that speed until refueling was necessary.

What a fantastic trip through some of avaiation history! It's such a dam shame that more bosses aren't like him! He was a rare one for sure that actually valued his employees and his pilots. Something that American businesses lost a long time ago, starting in the 1980's. Industries that looked at their employees as assets at one time, quickly became replaceable, regardless of their knowledge or expertise. People can produce extraordinary things of extraordinary quality, as long as their value is considered just as important, as the profit that comes from them. This was a very informative video about one of my most favorite aircraft, and I thank you for that! Cheers

78 through 81 I flew in RC135s out of Kadena and had many missions where a HABU was up doing her thing when we were out doing ours. I am not sure but had heard that the SOFA with Japan or maybe the prefecture of Okinawa meant no aircraft could apply afterburners at any point when over the island unless they could prove there was an amazing need and the US would still be fined even if need were there.
I am not even sure the SR71 had an afterburner or what it might have had. All I do know is one mission our pilot had us all wait outside the craft and watch the takeoff. You could feel one of those taking off in your bones from a good distance away. If you notice the flame coming out, imagine that morning when I swear that flame was twice as long and he put the nose a lot higher pitch and was simply.....gone.
I once saw an F15 do a nose stand going nearly straight up on takeoff, he definitely had AB going. And he looked like he was poking compared to the HABU. Simply....gone. Loud, proud then....quiet except for this rapidly fading roar.
And the tales I could tell about people over there trying to track them on radar......lol

Looks like Kadena, AFB, Okinawa. I was in the P3C Orion hangar right next door, 79-80, 81-82 deployments. Long live The Habu!! When I subsequently flew into Diego Garcia, they had the KC-135Qs for Blackbird inflight refueling. Clearly recall seeing those afterburners glow in the night sky. On one particular occasion, one of our Orions pooped a sonobuoy onto the runway on takeoff. An incoming Habu had its left main mount run right over it! After all had died down from that incident, the aircrew made up a new crew patch showing a Habu on crutches and entitled, “The Habu Killers”! 🤣Great memories!!

They used two Buick engines to crank the wngine to a start. No pneumatic device was powerful wnough to get those J58 wngines until 1980s or so. The fuel was special. It needed a special ignition using TEB (triethylborste). That greenish flash is TEB injection to get the engines goimg. (TEB aelf ignites when it comes in contact with atmosphere above -6 celsius).

I think the time index you have in the video are off. The first 10+ minutes show more recent video...looks like '90 or '91. The 1950's and 1960's parts of the video then start after that, but says it starts just before 2 minutes. No biggie...fine video all around!

l live near Mildenhall where 2 of these beauties were deployed and also went to the Mildenhall air show every year, wow l was 10 feet away from the static plane on show and also got 4 pilot autographs, wife bought me a SR71 book and had all the pilot names at the back and yes they were all real autographs and in the book. As l was getting a coffee at the show the other SR 71 was taking off ready to do its flying show and l kid you not l could not believe what happened next . The plane was about half a mile away from me with its diamond studded exhaust and that loud l was getting ripples in my coffee

The engines had to be started with V8 car engines right? Seriously, I thought I read that somewhere that these engines required that in those carts were the V8 engines.

@@poolboy9862 yeah the heat from flying would swell the skin causing no fuel to leak but once it no longer swelled it started to leak again lol

Try to imagine the person getting paid to count drips of fuel(JP7) making grids and graphs of the underside of this plane, what's acceptable and what's not, also cool side fact they used Buick wildcat V8s to jump the engines because they made the most torque out of all the V8s in the 60's, they were later replace with Chevrolet 454 big blocks, takes 2 of them to jump 1 jet engine
One more thing, in the description - Kelly 'Clarence' Johnson, even google has it all wrong

To get things done (and also looking wonderful). It is interesting how Lamborghini's design was a young kid, yet he managed to draw: the Miura, a gorgeous car, followed by the Countach, which looked like a spaceship, and the less widely know, but ultra iconic Lancia Stratos. He had, like these guys, no CAD, no 7,000 engineers and designers to assist him, yet he created some of the most beautiful cars in the world. His name is Gandini

Russian jets are cool , but something about American plans .... they have that polished and well maintained feel to them .... amazing this plane was flying at Mach 3 in the 1960's !

Cool green coior when they shoot the boron to make it light it off. Also, I like the sound of the twin 454s that produce the compressed air to start the jet engines.
