MUCH credit must go to Ben Mankiewicz for being such a superb host, giving the talk such electrifying energy, responding with such humorous attentiveness, and never interrupting Bogdanovich's storytelling. Ben does after all hail from a legendary family, so it's no surprise he chats as an equal!
RIP Peter Bogdanovich (July 30, 1939 - January 6, 2022), aged 82
You will be remembered as a legend
*July 30 `39, at least according to Wiki.
Ben Mankiewicz is such a professional.
What a tremendous raconteur! Rest in Peace, Mr. Bogdanovich, you are a national treasure.
Lol he liked underraged girls. What a treasure.

Peter's vocalizations of Orson Welles, Hitchcock, John Huston, etc., are absolutely spot-on! It's as if they were suddenly present at the interview. His passion for and absolute devotion to the art of motion pictures is plain for anyone to see!
I can listen to Bogdanovich for hours. I think he's fascinating.
Like Welles himself, Bogdanovich is a great story teller/public speaker.
I was walking home one Friday evening in Santa Monica - traffic lights- 6th and Arizona, no nobody around and waiting to cross and a guy across the streets waiting to come my way and in a split second I sussed it was Peter and I said hello and said I had loved his book on Directors years before! My story
Peter Bogdanovich was 82 years old, when he died on January 6, 2022 today!!!
He was older than he seemed.
What Bogdanovich says here about the magic of film (in his excellent Jimmy Stewart voice)--that, when it works, you are "giving people little tiny pieces of time that they never forget"--can stand as a pretty good description of what he give us in these reminiscences too. What a delight.
Bogdanovich is a treasure of cinema. I love hearing what he has to say about anything. He has so many great and wonderfully told film anecdotes and insights.
Dirty Old Man
Insights yes. And genius too. He was masterful and the greats knew it. Thus he got in with them pretty quick. Does bit hurt that he is +++++ This always helps!
Rip
His books are all awesome.
@@MothGirl007 I would not say so!
I love how the people feel the need to applaud every time Peter mentions a movie they’ve heard of.
Beautiful voice, even greater personality, wonderful storyteller. Another artist I wish I got to meet!
Bogdanovich is a masterful story teller re-telling stories told by masters. And what a great interviewer Ben Mankiewicz has become... he says the minimum. Just enough to keep the interview going along, seemingly effortlessly.
Passed away
The guy doing the interview did a wonderful job of letting PB tell all the stories he wanted to and hardly ever answer a question.
Ben mankowich...hosts movies on TCM.

You've Given us Pieces of Time.......Thank You
This was wonderful. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to rewind and watch it again.
gmaureen I did do just that!
Don't forget to rewind it again before you take it back!
One of the best directors, story tellers, loyal friend (Orson Welles..) one could ever dream of! Cudos to you Peter Bogdonovich!
He just passed
I always enjoy raconteurs without their ego influencing their stories. This was enjoyable.
RIP, Peter. I wish I could have met him … and spend several hours - make that _days_ - with him talking about John Ford.
Likewise. Can't believe there aren't more comments here regarding his passing.
I've been impressed by Peter B. since. I was 13 or 14. My friends and I loved his early movies. I never changed my mind, I always thought he was one of the best film directors of my lifetime. He was forgotten for a while, glad he's getting the recognition he deserves.
How can Bogdanovich have So many great stories. What a terrific interview
Peter was a masterful storyteller. That was how he was in life, not just in front of a large audience.
Anyone wanting to know the components of how to tell an interesting, and humorous story could learn a lot by listening to him.
Bogdanovich embodies the love of film to me. Everyone will talk about The Last Picture Show, but I think of his comments on River Phoenix in The Thing Called Love. He called River his friend. And then there is his small but very important role in the Sopranos. And I am just scratching the surface here.
I personally like Nickelodeon. He got amazing work from Burt Reynolds on that one.
PETER BOGDANOVICH (1939 - 2022)
I read everything Bogdanovich wrote in Esquire as they were published and he really shaped my enjoyment of movies. I should say that I also read Kael and their conflict over Kane is instructive. Nobody talks much about Pauline Kael but I think Bogdanovich will continue to be influential.
RIP Sir.
Rest in peace Peter bogdanovich
R.I.P. Peter bogdanovich!🙏
i love this guy...
Super impressed that Peter met Cagney in 1972 . Wish he could have coaxed the great star out of retirement. Milos Forman did in 1981, but Cagney's physical health had rapidly declined by then. Bogdanovich's books & documentaries are to be cherished. Last Picture Show is a beautifully funny/sad masterpiece that gets better with time...Hawks or Renoir could not have improved that screenplay.
I saw LPShow once & was captivated by the real emotions coming out of Cloris Leachman & Timothy Bottoms. Haven't seen it since.
James Cagney was a Diabetic. He was not well. Diabetes killed him. Very sad.
@@trudigoodman4825 Cagney talks about this condition with Tom Snyder in a rare 1980 interview available on CZcams...
GREAT PRODUCTION on Peter... There were 3 hit songs on Peter's lover Dorothy. They were by Bryan Adams, Prism & to hear/see the UK tribute Google "Lesley Vickerage - The Story of Dorothy Stratten. Allen David /Steve Flynn Music Videos You Tube. British Major screen star Lesley sings in memory of Dorothy.
I've enjoyed this. Peter is a very witty man.
As I mentioned to another, he is a low life dirt bag
Read up about Dorothy Stratton and her sister and you will understand why.
@@bobd1082 Why ? He was in love with Dorothy until that psycho husband killed her....and she was divorcing him. I know he married her sister, but, so what? Understandably he was grieving Dorothy.
What a fantastic interview! Bravo….
He is just *SO* funny. I've read all of his books (except his one on John Ford...which is very hard to get) and they are all great! *RIp Peter Bogdanovich.*
The greatest director ever.
A remarkable man.
First reason I wanted to watch it was : Peter made such great impressions of celebrities (his Hitchcock always cracks me uo). But as I was watching, I realized how genuinely knowledgeable he was on the movie business. I didn't have an inkling of how many celebrities he knew personally. His age took a long time to show up so when he was telling stories about Hitchcock from the early 60s, je seemed lije he would have been too young to have known John Ford, Howard Hawkes and Jim Cagney personally, but he did. A surprisingly endearing, fascinating man. My strongest rscomnendations to that piece of cinema history.
RIP Mr. Bogdanovich.............Godspeed
After listening to their TCM podcast this is a treat!
RIP Peter, you Sir were a genius & now with Dorothy forever.
One of the great Hollywood story tellers, if not the best..PB is one of a kind
Great interview, Mankowitch steers the conversation with ease and class
The way Bogdanovich captured nostalgia in The Last Picture Show and the incredible Paper Moon is remarkable,he is a genius talent in film making and up there with the best directors in cinematic history for sure.
He passed away
His ex-wife Pollie Platt was the reason he had three successful films. Last Picture Show, What's Up Doc, and Paper Moon.
Not true at all.
@@noahjulia8342 Listen to any podcast about her life in film or interviews with those who worked on these three films

Wow, what a lovely audience
So good. Now go listen to the podcast The Plot Thickens. Hour after hour of wonderful chat with Peter and the cast. It's the biz!
Thank you so much for recommending this! I didn't not know this existed until you mentioned it. Listening now!
True it is Great!!
RIP Peter Bogdanovich
Peter's great. His stories are great. Reading now his Who The Devil Made It. An incredible collection of interviews with some of the the greatest directors. Highly recommended! And in context of the interview I also highly recommend seeing Welle's The Trial. Amazing film. I've never met anyone who's actually seen it.
Corman still lives!
Rest Well, Peter Bogdanovich
What an amazing, amazing interview.
Oh I wish he had had more time. A wonderful interview.
A wealth of information, Loved it. I loved Orson Welles .
I'm really going to miss you Pete. You're with the greats now!
RIP Peter Bogdanovich, and everlasting thanks for 'Paper Moon' and 'What's Up Doc?'
Throughly enjoy listening to PB. He is a national treasure to be sure. Last Picture Show one of my favorite movies of all time.
Like the fella said, masterful storyteller - - Peter Bogdanovich. Any DVD with a Bogdanovich audio commentary, regardless of whose film it is, is worth getting. Criterion should book Bogdanovich for another audio track for a blu ray release of ANY film by any director.
Great interview - lover Peter - he is an excellent story teller
RIP can't believe he went so soon after this
R.I.P.
Wonderful story teller. He is like the old Dos Equis guy, worlds most interesting man. Great interviewer as well. Just watched his interview of David Chase of the Sopranos. He is just flat out interesting.

This was really good and funny seeing as how I grew up watching these actors and directors.
Rest In Peace legend ❤️
This is great but I wish they would've talked about Paper Moon.
There are other videos on CZcams where he talks extensively about Paper Moon. That's my favorite of his movies. It's perfect from the first shot to the last.
JeffRebornNow that young black actress. My goodness she was LIFE. Hilarious and touching but I hate how she got left behind and didn’t get back home to her mama 😢

This was great.
I just watched a 50 year old interview of Bodganovich in the Dick Cavett show. How much more interesting the man has become since!
he was still interesting back then.
Mike...Dick Cavett was the problem...he was clever in undermining his guest especially if the guest was successful in the film or art world. ...* Because jealousy.
Peter Bogdanovich is a joy to watch.Tony
He is a low life dirt bag
@Nobby Barnes wow, what an intelligent well thought out response. Did your dog help you write that. You must be quite a person to feel the need to support a dirt bag like PB.
WOW! Phenomenal interview!!! DEFINITELY WATCH THIS!!! I'm not usually a big fan of interviews, but I totally enjoyed this one, I'm SURE you will as well...
why would you not be a fan of interviews?
have you NO CURIOSITY...about people?
do you just believe movies are real?
if you date...do you never ask the other person a question?
have you never talked to your parents?
how about friends?
did you go through school never asking a question?
have you never looked into the night sky and questioned it?
how about nature...have you zero interest in learning about anything?
do you spend all day looking into the mirror?
thanks for sharing how well rounded you are as a person.....the world needs more like you...
Jade Zee: interesting comment, on MY comment, it's ALSO surprising that u have SO MUCH time to pen a LONG reply to my "off the cuff remark" curiouser & curiouser... BTW pretty much the ONLY interviews that DO interest me are found right here, on TWC! Most current interviews are done with people that have some small notoriety & are usually no talent nothing's, in my humble opinion, of course, THOSE do NOT interest me nor do they pique my curiosity. I guess that I should've made that abundantly clear!
Took a little swearing to earn your respect did it? An improvement over the late night tv bootlicking we've all become accustomed to?
@@caroldemartino3032 Carol, I agree with you about most celebrity interviews. The people doing the interviewing are usually ill-prepared (Larry King was notorious for this) and the people being interviewed have little of value to say. It doesn't seem to matter who they are: politicians, artists, directors, writers, actors. They all bore me. I used to like to listen to Gore Vidal but he got old and died. But he was a witty interviewee. Bogdanovich is still good but he's fading. I liked Dick Cavett's interview of Katherine Hepburn. But that was almost 50 years ago. There's no one really fascinating around now. Our culture is poor and bland and grey. And young kids are fed shit like Marvel Universe movies, so unreal; video games as cinema. Their brain cells atrophy watching the screen. How could such a culture produce anyone interesting? As crazy as he was, J.D. Salinger was probably right in turning his back on the whole thing and never giving an interview.
RIP PETER! WE WILL MISS U
This is wonderful!
Wonderful.
Clear and concise!
Fascinating. Fascinating.
Does anyone know what happened to the Bogdanovich 7-year diary book mentioned toward the end of this video? Peter Bogdanovich says it was already edited and due to be published that year, 2017. But no sign of it.
Thank you, Bogdanovich.

His gift for impressions as storyteller was icing on the cake, R.I.P.
He had Feeling for Dorothy Stratten & her sister R I P Peter together with Dodorthy Stratten forever in heaven

Wow, another gap in my knowledge filled her. How this man intersected with history is amazing. NO IDEA he was such an impressionist as well.
The world will miss you Peter. Slumber well...
Very engaging. Watching this made me think of all the mistakes I made while working in Hollywood. I guess I'll have to write a book. I've got some stories!
What was cut out? At 47:27.
What I love about Peter is his that he's a real film buff- not just his movies- but communicates a such a love for old Hollywood. Great impressions!
Honest man... great storyteller. Fine director.
Peter is very funny I did know
Basically a preview of what was to come with season one of The Plot Thickens. (Which fortunately was made before Peter died.)
The psychiatrists' psychiatrist and great friend of Welles. What a life!
Great story teller Peter
Legendary director and brilliant storyteller with only one tragic mistake in his life.....fooling around with a married woman.

How long before he mentions Orson Wells? 2.50
Wonderful interview, but it seems they used the least experienced camera operator they could find, maybe somebody walking past the studio on a food delivery and got mixed in with staff.
Wonderful interview, but take your finger off the zoom rocker and add subtitles.
How often is a crowd this amped for a guest?
04:30-07:30 best movies story ever
People forget that Peter directed "What's Up, Doc" which was a glorious send-up of the 30's and 40's farces like Bringing Up Baby, etc.
He did a great job, as did the four principle actors.
Great director...I am amazed at the level of top drawer tail he's had in his life.
There's a weird jump at 47:27. What did we miss?
Speaking of director Lewis Milestone's great comedy picture "Miracle at Morgan's Creek." Skirting the censorship rules of the time...unwed mother, etc.?
