I have purchased seeds and live plants from Baker Creek and I have never had a problem with their germination rate. Everything that I have planted has grown and I was able to collect my own seeds from what I grew. Now I am looking around at other Heirloom Seed Companies to just look around and see what is available. Baker Creek opened my eyes to the “spice of life” in regards to gardening and for that I am thankful.

I’ve ordered also from BCHS, but I’ve also ordered from Seed Savers Exchange. They have a free catalog and a catalog that they call The Exchange yearbook. You can send a request for whatever seeds you see in the catalog. Can’t say how much the price is per packet is but all I can say they have a large variety some are self pollinating/hand pollination. You should check them out. Good luck with your next year garden.😊

Here's my only real problem with Baker Creek: Base Seed Count vs Price. Yes, you can find some pretty rare varieties but when it comes to staple crops (things like beans, peas, tomatoes, peppers, squash) they are just not worth the money. For the last two years, I have done my due diligence to compare prices between my four favorite seed companies to see which ones offer the most seeds for the price (per variety I need) and Baker Creek often falls short. So that is always my advice to growers about seed, shop around. Edit: Bitter melon is an acquired taste. You will either love it or hate it, there is no in between. I would suggest looking up recipes for it so you know how to cook it properly. Kimchi: You don't necessarily need Napa cabbage to make kimchi. The cabbage takes quite a while to mature so in the interim I grow Korean and/or Daikon radish (for radish kimchi) and Pak Choi for cabbage kimchi.

@@appalachianjack99 My seed companies vary. Baker Creek is in my top 4. The others are Seed Savers, MIGardener, and Johnny's. I have used all four of them for nearly 10 years and never had a bad batch of seeds. And, btw, Im from NC. I live in the sandhills.

That's a fine collection. I grew the Black Hungarian but didn't enjoy it much. It makes a really pretty plant with purple flowers, but the peppers seemed to taste like an unripe pepper the entire season. I think we ended up not using any of them. I'm looking forward to the upcoming video(s) to show how they germinate and how your garden(s) progress.

I've been using Baker seeds for the last 5 years and I've never had a germination problem. Yes they are a little more expensive 🫰 but also I used to purchase my organic seeds from another company that's been around for a very long time and when they changed management for some reason I started having germination problems that's when I discovered Baker Creek and I've never looked back.

The issue I have with their packets. Is that they put more into the history of the seed on the packet and not telling you how long (how many day) it takes to harvest.
Other than that I like their seeds. They ALWAYS give more seeds than they say you get on the packet. They also regularly test their corn for GMO cross contamination!

That information is more or less found on line or older farming books. It's also based on region and so many different factors that it varies so much. I've never gotten my actual growing information off of a seed pack.

I order from lots of places and also buy many seeds from my local co-op. I’ve never had a problem with Baker Creek seeds unless it was a variety that I just wanted to try that I knew may not love my south Louisiana heat. I understand when I order seeds that don’t normally grow around here that I may have poor germination or lackluster results. But I order things anyway because I just enjoy testing out varieties. I’ve had great luck with planting their seeds for varieties that I know will love it here like cucumbers, bush beans and tomatoes. I’ve got some of their Golden Jenny melons doing great in my seed trays right now. I’d rather order and make up my own mind about a company rather than listen to FB reviews etc. You never know how another person handled the seeds, grew the seeds, tended the plants, or what their climate threw at that plant. Great video. Thanks so much.

I am Mexican and I have made many purchases with baker creek, they used to have 3 dollar shipping to Canada and Mexico, I used to make large purchases.
recently they changed the shipping cost to 10 dollars and they made a limit of 10 seed packets per order, that basically prevents mexican gardeners and farmers from being able to continue buying from them

Heirloom andd open pollinated seeds are cheap. Basil is about 1 cent a seed. Tomato seeds 5 - 25 cents. I grow thousands of plants per season. Baker Creek needs to sell bulk. Thier packets, website & cataloge need more growing information. You really have to do your own research on each cultivar. Overall I give them a b+.

Shipping? I've never been charged shipping by Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, although other than buying the garden planting guide ("Clyde's"), I've only ever purchased seeds. I did, however, talk with their customer service department back when their business was less automated and specifically asked them, when does shipping kick in and I, the consumer, have to pay for it? The answer was, "Ma'am, you can buy everything in our catalog, and not pay one cent for shipping."
(Good to know!---not that I'll ever be buying *everything* in that catalog unless it were to be very much smaller than it is today.)
    Has there been a change?
I have no official connection to Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds; I'm just a very happy, loyal customer.
That guaranteed minimum, of course, means you won't receive *fewer* than the "10" or "6" or "300" on the back of the envelope. (We just realized that we have received a guaranteed minimum of *six-hundred* parsnip seeds.)
In the past, when my senior citizen disrupted sleep pattern has had me awake in the middle of the night, I've played bean counter and literally counted leek or onion seeds to see whether BCHS delivered on their promise of guaranteed minimums. Packets contained 250 percent, or two-and-one-half times as many seeds as the guaranteed minimum. Cabbage, rutabaga and turnip seed packets, very much the same story, although once a packet contained four times the minimum guaranteed number of seeds.
I have on perhaps two occasions since 2011, I believe is when I first ordered seed from Baker Creek, received packets with informative stickers on the packet front, probably not more than three packets, total: "Intentionally over-packed due to low germination," and if recall serves, the date of the germination test, so the customer knows what's going on.
'Way back in the day, when I relied on paper catalogs and paper checks, I made a change to one of the items in my order, swapping it for a different, less expensive variety, but forgot to change the cost of that seed packet and so when I added up the charges, my check was too large by seventy-five cents, but that escaped my notice. When the order arrived, it included a small manila envelope containing three U.S. 25¢ pieces, to make up my over payment.
I have found Baker Creek's customer service to be at least unexcelled if not unequaled, and the quality of their seeds to be superb, so it's my hope that you'll be as pleased to be a Baker Creek customer as so many others of us are!
Wishing you Happy Gardening and a Good and Prosperous New Year!
