      @@dutchbanderlindt4227 I wonder how growers keep multiple heirlooms going. Read seeds are only viable for 3 years and that corn is prone to inbreeding and stuff.
      I read in a book that to avoid this, when starting, you save like 20 cobs per 100, then split that into 3 portions, grow from pack 1, save back to that, grow pack 2, etc. Then on the 3rd year you mix all the saved seeds together. And that's just one variety.

      @@nunyabiznes33 nice, that sound right breeding done right is an extensive process. Im not sure about read seeds but i can speak for old heirloom seeds saved by old timers, my grandpa just gave me a several sacks full of old heirlooms that are not available anymore such as the old rugged red ripper, there is a new variety but this is supposed to be the “original”. More such as pencil cob, strawberry maize, dixie lee, willow leaf limas, to name a few. Some of these seeds were purchased in 2004! Still viable at a 10/12 ratio! Many of them such as the red ripper have been off the shelves for many decades and are only accessible through old time folks who kept up with the seed.

    One of the best theories of how we started using the seed from teocinte was actually beer and other fermented beverages because it makes terrible tortillas but it makes great beer. Another interesting thing that I’ve heard is that Pod corn is actually a mutation that causes husk to grow around each kernel and it can actually occur in any corn varieties.

    A very old way to deal with corn ear worms is to cover the ears as soon as the corn silks are pollenated. Covered with burlap or socks. I used unused pantyhose once and it worked very well, but it is a challenge on timing to get full pollenation before the worms show up. I also interplanted garlic, thyme, and rosemary and this worked very well too. The bugs couldn't detect the scent of the young corn with the aromatic herbs interplanted. I just left the herbs in until after the corn harvest and it was fine, but this does take alot of herbs to be effective. About 2 or 3 plants of each herb per corn stalk planted about 18 inches from the corn in a ribbon beside the tall stalks. It is extra work and the garlic keeps the mice away too as a bonus. Someday I will add citrus scented marigolds to the aromatic herbs for some more natural protection from nematodes. Marigolds need to be 6 feet apart or the effect is too strong for the crops. These herbs are superb for keeping worms out of potatoes and all root crops too. Happy planting!

    I'm a Shawnee from Oklahoma and my family still has our Indian corn from who knows when. It's old though. I wonder what types of corn it is. When we harvest it, half of the crop, might have kernels that are mostly white with some blue, and the other half mostly blue with a few white kernels and sometimes a single red kernel or two maybe. I have seen some mostly white ears of corn in our harvest that have red kernels sprinkled through it. The red kernels are pretty rare though as far as I've noticed.

    1. Can One eat any type interchangeably or is one type of corn not useful for other things like flour corn being boiled?
    2. How to harvest seed when multiple varieties grow together and cross polinate so varieties are not mixed?

    • @RareSeedsBC

      1. you can, but a flour corn, wont generally be suited to fresh eating or as a popped corn, or a popcorn being used for other purposes. some varieties are multipurpose.
      2. if not isolating by distance or barriers like greenhouses, you will need to had pollinate and bag your tassels!

    I wanted to grow BABY corn ... the type that is in cans. After doing just a little bit of research, the plants do not grow nearly as tall as normal corn plants. But after sending an email to a well known seed company I was informed that 90% of baby corn is grown in indonesia and area .. and so it is really a tropical type of corn. So, if anybody knows if baby corn can be grown in not so warm areas of USA and Canada, ... please comment.

    For varieties you no longer sell, do you or have you considered storing them for long-term conditions to reintroduce? I understand most of your seed comes from others growing it out, but it would be useful to prevent its loss when one guy stops growing it. An interested farmer may come along a few years later and a sample of the stored seed could be given to be grown out again.

      Most of your corn will just breed with itself if it’s on the other side of the garden or house, but if you want it pure a few hundred OR you could bag the tassles and hairs and pollinate the plants you want when the tassles let off their pollen by putting a bag from one plant on the hairs of an ear on another.

    • @RareSeedsBC
      @RareSeedsBC  Před 2 lety +1

      When it comes to GMO testing, its only really a necessity for corn right now (this could change in the future if/when other GMO crop types become more widely developed and grown.) Heirloom corn farmers producing for seed know the risks of cross pollination even when GMO contamination is not in question. so most do a good job of making sure they are either isolated by distance, barriers or by hand pollinating and bagging tassells. With that being said there have been a couple cases of seed batches/growouts being contaminated.

    I bought the big horse spotted Corn in 2018 and 2020 (I wanted extra in case of misadventure) We have good geographical isolation in our valley .. in North East Oklahoma. So .. I planted traditional Osage corn on land that Traditionally belonged to the Osage .. and it does really well here. Since it is no longer in the Baker Creek catalog, I've started selling it .. at 2018 prices. An interesting note about the occasional speckled red ears that this variety produces: they dry up like flour corn, but are still sweet once they have dried. We save up ours, and mix it in 1/6 with normal Big Horse corn, to keep the genetics refreshed.
