How I Tracked Mid/Side Drums In Real Time Using A Patchbay Instead Of M/S Decoder w/SOUND SAMPLES

  • I am NOT doing anything lots of people don't already do... But it was the first time I sat down to figure it out! Sharing it for folks who are intimidated by M/S recording. (or too lazy!) You don't need more hardware (beyond the patchbay!)... and you don't need to go back and "fix" tracks inside the DAW to make them playback in M/S, you can just record them in M/S directly.
    BACKSTORY:
I was on a kick testing out how I like M/S on drum room mics vs. traditional stereo set ups...
I was just sick of having to go through the extra step of having to drag the second "Side" track down to a second, phase flipped channel in the DAW before I could hear the actual M/S tracks properly to compare.
Not like that's a BIG deal, but when I'm trying to get a quick listen, it was an annoying distraction. So...
Here's what I did and it works perfectly.
    Thanks for watching!

You're never gonna achieve perfect cancelation because there is always going to be subtle timing differences with regard to reflections and even the super slight difference between when the left side of the kit arrives at the right side of the ribbon/capsule and vice versa. What little is left over when you collapse an M/S array to mono will be of such a low amplitude in comparison to the Mid mic that you'll never hear it.
I absolutely love M/S room mics because of the superb mono compatibility.
An M/S array is also killer for piano recording.
Edit: upon further reflection, even running the side through the mult into the second converter adds a short run of extra cable and would also introduce a very very slight timing difference between the two signals.

I've never tried M/S recording. Honestly, it kind of mystifies me. I understand it, but I don't.

Haha ... I have messed around before but never seriously... I don't believe I've ever actually kept any M/S tracks I ever did... But I wanted to really dig in and learn it. I THOUGHT I understood it, and I mean.. I do... I can technically record M/S... I understand what is happening... But it remains to be seen if I will end up actually using it in a mix.
figuring out how to have it instantly done and listenable, without having to take additional steps in the DAW is for sure making me excited to deeeeep dive.
Rest assured, I'm currently obsessed with making test(s) that will include wayyyy too many microphones and examples. Will have to wait until early next year though, leaving town Saturday for a week. Trying not to miss putting a vid out next week but it for sure won't be the crazy M/S Microphone Comparison. haha (and that's just in front of a drum kit! I can't wait to mess with it on guitars!)
Thanks as usual for watching and commenting! happy new Year!
