Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory) joins us this week and talks about the feeling of ‘constantly being an outsider’ coming to Hollywood from a humble upbringing in the PNW and then heading back to Washington after years in the film industry. Jon shares some crazy stories from his family history that helped shape him into the anxiety and stress free man that he is today. We also get into (of course) our shared bond of horror, why Napoleon Dynamite never had a sequel, and Jon’s memorable run-ins with Will Ferrell, James Cameron, and Ali G.

Why Did JON HEDER Decide to Ditch HOLLYWOOD?!? #insideofyou #acting - Zábava
I worked with him on set for a commercial and he was honestly so freakin cool. You’re always told don’t talk to the talent unless your job is directly working with them like Director, DP, makeup etc. but he started up a conversation with me and was just cool. Super genuine and a great guy.
“Talent”
Great guy? Relax.
@@flipjupiter5077 lol nah. I’ll say what I say because I was a college student and he was very nice to me and didn’t act like a diva at all even though I was a lowly PA.
@@CinemaSteve don't let douches make you explain yourself. Good to hear you had a great experience.
lol…why do we pretend like celebrities are anything more then human….i’ll never understand this behavior.
So basically because he does whatever he feels like he wanted to do - GOSH!
😂😂😂😂
I remember watching Napoleon Dynamite for the first time and at the end of the movie I thought, "What Did I Just Watch", so I watched it again and absolutely fell in love with the movie. Every so often I get the DVD out and watch it again. It's one of those movies you could watch over and over and just never get tired of it.
Same. I did NOT like it the first time. Then I watched it again and then I got it
@@99bimmer Yes, I did the same thing with FUNNY FARM and Chevy Chase. Saw it on a date, and I hated it. But, after rewatching and living rurally, I loved it.
I’ve seen that movie so many times, it never gets old!
I decided that I despised it when it came out because people in school were obsessed with it when it came out and I was an asshole contrarian teenager.
It’s only now that I’m realizing that I’ve still to this day never seen it all the way through.
I should finally give it a shot, lol.
@@John-mf1sz have you completed your assignment so we can get this club started?
Blades of glory hugely underrated
I agree it was over the top in a great way.
Who's underrating it?
“Twin dongs”
The Iron Lotus…RIP to that girls head
Ummm..... no. Sucks
He was so damn funny in Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell.
Napoleon Dynamite will forever be the most iconic comedic character. Never died laughing so hard at a character
Funny, I feel the complete opposite. Like I wasted two hours of my life on the most unfunny character I’ve ever seen
@D x3 guys just looking for internet arguments. This isn't the youtube video to interject your rad opinion bro.
@@D3XthaTriF3ctA I read that like you were a villain on Napoleon Dynamite lol
Youre right, you didnt die
Why do you have to be right all the time? GOSH!
I just loved him in "School for Scoundrels" and "Mama's Boy".
Never seen either one.
Jon reminds me of a friend who won 70 million dollars in the lottery.
He never changed and didnt let anything or one try to change him. The only that changed was the decimal point on his bank account.
Its been a few years since he won and most have forgotten that he did.
Alot of friends who won seventy million lol
That’s stupid. If you have a mass influx of cash, you should absolutely take the opportunity to hire a personal investor and grow your wealth by 5-10% a year, which gives you a few million dollars a year to spend without even putting a dent in your winnings. If he’s not taking advantage of his wealth, then he’s just a miser who wants to take his money to the grave.
@@BBD-AITB cope
@@BIGMIKESKNUTTS okay mommy.
He was paid $1,000 for Napoleon Dynamite. But the producers gave him points on the backend.
To sum it all up. Jon Heder does whatever the heck he feels like it
Napoleon Dynamite is one of the funniest movies ever made.
Not really
@@MrShanester117 you don’t belong here
@@MrShanester117 Really.
You need to see more movies
@@Sparky-220 I watched one about your momma. It had a Llama too. ;) I love teasing keyboard warriors.
Blades Of Glory is one of my absolute all time faves! 👏🏻 He seems like such a cool, down to earth guy!
Down to earth 🌍
Hopefully Napoleon Dynamite makes him a living for the rest of his life with how much that film is loved
Unlikely. He didn't make much making the movie so I doubt he gets any residuals.
They did renegotiate after the success of the movie so he’s definitely getting paid more handsomely than the original pay
Only Pedro got paid well for that movie. After he ran for President.
Can’t wait to show my kids Napoleon dynamite one day… The pure joy that will be on their faces
Why wait?
I went to UGA when Napoleon Dynamite blew up and Jon Heder came to visit the campus one time. During his speech, a student got on stage carrying a steak 🥩 and asked Jon if he could throw it in his face and Jon obliged 😂
Starred in a movie with a 400K budget, grossed 50 million!
Springboard movie
Pretty sure it wasn’t him who ditched Hollywood. Seems like an optimistic take on the situation.
No wonder that Liger was so awesome. He majored in animation!
You’re not a real person
My guess is that his sense or morals and empathy didnt allow him to be apart of the "hollywood culture".
He kept mentioning being an outsider. Really hammered the point.
Good on him. Do what makes you happy
Good observation...I was thinking to myself, what does the fact he's an "outsider" even matter..and what dies it even mean?...now I see what you're saying.
His dad was a primary care doctor from Salem, Oregon, where I grew up.
He has the accent
his dad took out my appendix. I grew up friends with his brother when I was little.
@@ceno10101 I went to North Salem High School... where did you go?
I know his cousin. I met her at a ranch in Southern Idaho. She looks and sounds just like him but has bobs.
I still live in salem oregon.
It really seems no one in the comments below are actually familiar with Jon Heder. Honestly, he wasn’t “rambling” in this interview so much as it appears he was trying to give a decent answer without having to just blurt out the truth…that he’s a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and because everyone seems to hate “Mormons”, especially Hollywood, the real reason he stepped back is because he won’t compromise his values for a paycheck, and in this industry, that’s highly frowned upon.
Met Jon yesterday (along with Jon Gries and Efron Ramierez). All three were just such freakin cool dudes.
I believe the budget for Napoleon Dynamite was 400k, and grossed over 40 million. Jon was paid $1000 for his part. I hope he got more from residuals 👍
And where did you hear this??
He did what he really negotiated his contract
I find it hard to believe he only made 1k. That’s barely a week’s pay.
When you're shooting an Indy film people don't get paid much and its usually friends helping friends and whatnot. So its possible. I hope he got more tho
That story went viral on fb 😂 that was his original pay then they reworked it bro! He made millions !
he is such a great guy! him and his ND cast members came to my job last year and after they were done with the gig we all went out to the local arcade my friends own and we played games for a couple of hours. it was great!
Jon seems to have found his niche in life and the place where he lives seems to have contributed to his realisation of this. I don’t think it matters where a person lives what matters is that they are at home within themselves, get that right and the worlds your oyster 😊
Ahh thats where the removed aspect comes from.. animator at heart, no ego to put your face on things, someone elses faces is just fine.
Some family in Hockinson, WA say they see him around. It’s near Vancouver(WA)
PDX to LAX is like a 90m flight lol
I'm picking Jon Heder if Sean "X-Pac" Waltman ever gets his own biopic
What ????? Lol how
I'm not seeing it, lol.
Just too sweeet!
I laughed way too hard at this. But it's perfect.
Who should play Chyna?
Napoleon Dynamite bought my cousin's house outside of Portland a couple of years ago.
I’m almost positive at this point that everyone famous is basically placed there by the MIB or the higher ups and it doesn’t matter who the people wanna see the evil powers that be are gonna put what they want us to see on stage.
Translation- work was drying up.
I hate when people talk a bunch of words but don't say anything.
"I felt like an outsider in Hollywood so I moved. Now that I'm famous I feel like an outsider here"
... see how that didn't waste 5 minutes?
I'd love to see Heder just make some small Indie something against type like playing a soldier or another complete 180 from Napoleon Dynamite. I think he missed his window into either doing some more serious comedy or drama. I did see him playing Walt Disney's brother or stepbrother in a movie awhile back and did a pretty good job.
Bench warmers was brilliant
I’m sure it’s a extremely toxic environment. I was just an extra on a few sets….and I could see it’s definitely a pecking party. So, with that…I’m good.
I worked so many sets as BG.Yes no one is very kind every one burned out.And no growth other then to be a stand in or body double it's the same 8actors in every damn movie and it won't change. The same 9 actors make the same 9 movies every year.so unfortunate.
Just make movies at home.
Can he still do the Iron Lotus ??!!!!🤠
When I've watched Jon in other movies it's clear that Napoleon Dynamite was lightning in a bottle. He could totally do the voice over thing and run with it.
Yeah because it's so hard to play an overexaggerated r3tard.
Exactly, everything else he did sucked.
He did do a voice for Legend of Korra (which was massive shit)
@@roamer1389 legend of what?
@@ronthorn3 legend of Korra. Sequel to avatar the last airbender. A massively woke shitty show.
You should include a link to the whole episode.
Lol... laugh out loud is not my personality, but I actually did LOL several times, thank you Napoleon and Pedro.👏
i commented on this a few hours ago and my post doesn't show. WTF you tube? i watch this moviw when i feel down. always raises my spirit
It'd be cool to see what Napoleon, Kip, and Uncle Rico are up to these days
Don't forget LaFawnda and Rex Kwan Do
@@therealwhoopigoldberg Uh Pedro, hello???
Tina? Still loving ham??
Uncle Ricos time machine is top 10 laugh out loud funny moments.
To the bashers here saying that it was the other way around , that Hollywood ditched Jon , well haven't you watched Blades of Glory? It was a fun movie and a gem just like Napoleon Dynamite.. Now if you want to criticize every film and wants it to be Martin Scorsese's film .. then just watch a Martin Scorsese film .
Yep that’s two successful films he was in, the last being - checks notes - 17 years ago. But he totally chose to not be in anymore big films after that. Sure.
I am so glad I found your channel
Welcome
Because he doesn't buy into the bs. He doesn't want to sacrifice his soul and mind for fake things.
Napleon Bonafrog in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is his best role
Pickle and Peanut is still one of the BEST animated toons!! Why did it have to end!?!!
It's crazy to me it's been 18 yrs. Like holy cow. I was a freshman in college. And now anyone born that yr is an adult. Time flies, and it's a tired trope. But Napoleon Dynamite still looks crisp today. It wasn't a movie set for 2004 say like Mean Girls, where it looks dated now. Napoleon was this neutral site in a neutral time, where even the mix tape was made fun of because Ipods were a thing.
A very successful independent type actor. I mean napoleon dynamite was huge for a low low made film. Then his success after. Really like the guy.
I remember wearing my vote for pedro shirt for class pictures😂. I was a chubby 10yo with a shirt that was a bit form fitting.
Jon seems like a good dude. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t want to be around the worst city in the country. Hollywood is a cesspool.
That would be any town in Texas
The title should've been Jon Heder loves his family more than himself.
I miss Michael Rosenbaum in Impastor - that show was HILARIOUS!!! We need another good comedy like that again!
The Philly Special was so cool
He reminds me so much of JB from August Burns Red. Or the other way around. It’s eerie.
Blown away!
I thought he was Taylor Swift now!
He majored in animation? Is that why the shading on the upper lip looked so good?
Jon is the man.
I'm not sure I exactly followed his logic here, but I'm glad he's happy.
Haha same... ofcourse it might have been me not listening.
Lex luthor and Napoleon together at last. Thanks for the interview!
Washingtonian here! Had no idea he moved his fam to the PNW! Great decision 👍. Nothing compares
He didn't want to be part of the red shoe cult. "It was way too hot" yeah, I bet. You saved your soul and your kids. Bravo.
Exactly
Isn’t he part of the LDS cult though?
What?
@@luke11992 is he?
@@luke11992 Exactly. It's hilarious the OP uses the word "cult" to describe Hollywood, when Jon is in an actual cult. I'm sure he enjoys those Sunday visits by LDS members who go through all of his personal shit.
I ditched Hollywood too. Got no job offers.
On of the few sequels, I would love to see made.
Is he still working? I haven’t seen him in anything since benchwarmers and blades of glory
He saw what they were doing in hollywood behind close doors and was like NOPE IM OUT
Doesn't sound like it, he's still interacting with them
The pedos would not invite him, he is not a sociopath
He's a mormon they're offended by dancing. He believes some sex pervert found sacred golden plates in the dirt in Upstate NY. Which, OK, fine, you do you. But yeah.
He funny AF but I think he is really sheltered. I could imagine him having an existential crisis if he ended up at a party where someone passed a joint.
People get so lost in their fandom they just see what they want to see. I think it's really interesting how religious he is, but devout mormons are extremely socially conservative. Prolonged kissing isn't allowed outside of marriage. He very well could have been uncomfortable just being around unmarried women.
My favorite work he ever did was Lionel Gayheart (Chod) with Critical Role's Vox Machina campaign lol
Heder is a humble guy
'NAPOLEON DYNAMITE' 🧨 still continues to make me and my family laugh each and everytime we watch it❣️❣️❣️❣️ Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with the world❣️❣️
I bought the dvd through word of mouth, first time I watched it I just didn't get it, stuck it on again and I loved it, I don't understand it either how I didn't get it first time, but that's movies for you.
Same thing happened to me 😂
There are a lot of movies like that, then they become your favorite.
Saw Napoleon Dynamite Live last night. JH said the ND algorithm shows that if you make it to the 3rd viewing, you finally think it's great😂
Napoleon Dynamite is how I leaned I had thick Pacific Northwest accent
He wasn't getting cast either tho
School For Scoundrels was pretty damn funny with him and Billy Bob Thornton.
Benchwarmers is the best
Agreed. Near perfect comedy, it's just so damn rewatchable
Classic
Whatever I feel like doing Hollywood gosh!!!! 😂
He's saying he's not a NEPO BABY. 🤙🏼
Two things about Portland. Adidas outlet store and mucho traffico
I could see him writing a movie called the Outsider and make it a really funny comedy! There are so many different ways of going about it.
Napoleon Dynamite is one of my favorite movies of all time, but let's keep it real. Napoleon Dynamite was his one-hit-wonder.
If I met him I wouldn't recognize him. He probably likes it that way, seems to not care about fame. Good for him.
I think people don’t realize it’s ok to wanna live somewhere completely different from where you work. Some people like their personal lives separate from the professional. I’m glad he’s doing what’s best for him.
Because he does what he wants! Gosh.
First movie and he's a legend. Fold your cards. You won.
Did he really ditch Hollywood or is it like when a hot girl dumps a guy and then the guy says, "it was mutual"? All he has to do now is claim to be gay or Christian and he will get gigs from one group or the other.
I really like how Michael Rosenbaum let’s his guests talk and tell their story. I hate when hosts talk over their guests
This guy needs to hit the gym and make the Andrew Luck story
lol
“What are you gonna do today, Jon?” “Whatever I want, gosh!”
I think if I met Jon IRL, I would be so unnaturally comfortable around him. He just reminds me so much of my cousin.
???… What did your cousin do to you???
I have no idea what he just said. 🤔
Was there an answer in there?
Blades of Glory very underrated.
I'm here cos of the movie blades of glory
John Heder has the build and look to him where he can be transformed into an action hero or play a navy seal in the next 100th navy seal movie
We need a Napoleon Dynamite 2.... ND and padro kids be great!
Dragging a gi joe out a bus window .. EPIC
Benchwarmers was a great movie too
His Tremors movie was one of the better ones in my opinion.
I remember I worked with Jon back in the 90’s. He gave me a thousand dollars for being a cool guy
Heder must get absolutely mobbed in Idaho. They love him there since Napoleon Dynamite put Idaho on the map
The Lewis and Clark folks aren't impressed.
My buddy worked on his wifes car. Never knew he lived out by me, we're basically neighbors.
Yeah he ditched them
