In March 2018, I had the opportunity to work with two of my ultra-running idols, Dylan Bowman & Rickey Gates. Dylan's goal was to set the fastest known time on the Lost Coast Trail - a time previously set by Rickey Gates and Leor Pantilat. The trail is 56 miles long, features rugged cliffs and mountains with 10,000ft of gain as well as a long sandy beach section where you have to race the tide or risk serious danger. This was an incredible experience brought together by RedBull and I can't thank them enough! If you'd like to see the RedBull version of the video that I made, check it out here: • CALIFORNIA'S LOST COAS...

Ricky giving him that buckle was so heartwarming
I've backpacked the Lost Coast a couple of times. Awesome trip, but it never occurred to me that someone would be crazy enough to run it! Props, guys.
Another crusher video of people crushing it. Kick ass.
Ethan! Your movies are becoming so legit. You are on to even more amazing things.
Great movie Ethan, i've really enjoyed how its cut together. I think you're at your best when you do things like this :)
Great video. Just backpacked this. The tides are no joke. There is no rescue if one is swept out to sea.
I just ran the southern section from USAL to SHELTER COVE. It was brutal.
12 hrs exactly.
I’m an old beginner trail runner.
Amazing, desperate and dangerous fun!
I want the whole shootin’ match now. Plenty of water.
GPS a must or you’ll end up living out there!

Love it ETHAN. It’s things like these, why people fall in love with trail running.
This video gets me pumped for moving up north to Humboldt. Backpacking the Lost Cost is definitely on the list and the Bigfoot Trail.
Me and my cousin did this in like 2008 almost ALMOST in one single push. It was right after we started that we realized that we should not have left our other cousin alone. We were selfishly honed in on this hike and only realized about 3 hours in that this other cousin who had dropped us off was not doing well emotionally. He was stoic as ever but some very alarming signs were there. So yea about 3 hours in we were overcome with guilt and concern. Instead of turning around, which I swear did not even seem like an option at the time, we pushed. Hard. There are sections of this hike that you’re supposed to wait out for high tide but we instead free climbed the rock faces and traversed them sideways as waves smashed against them right below our feet. I’m not too proud to admit that after minimal sleep and the push to finish before nightfall of day 2, I was mentally broken and relied on my cousin and his unbelievably strong mentality to finish. We did it in under 48 hours, not a record or anything, not even something I’ve ever bragged about before, but seeing this video made me want to share my story. And oh yea, we totally saw whales. Whales and a lot of gigantic sea lions. Those things are so much bigger than you’d ever imagine and we saw one dead washed up with a bite the size of a car hood taken out of it. The worst part was drinking the water we boiled over a camp fire. Smoky flavored water is terrible. In closing I just wana say shoutout to Joe my cousin who really took me with him and kept the morale high. If you’ve ever done something similar to this, you know morale is only secondary to food and water.
I hiked this southbound a few years ago, it was brutal. Boulders to rocks to sand and back again, over and over. We took 2 nights to hike it, such an amazing adventure. Thanks for bringing me back.
Great documentation of this trail and excellent effort!
That’s properly gnarly. The sea fret and the black sand is so eerie. Totally awesome run and film.
Thanks so much for this Ethan, hoping I see you out on the trails soon. Lots of love from Portland!
Really great little film, absolutely love Dylan Bowman, super cool dude, huge respect for both Rickey and Dylan. Thanks Ethan 😁
It took me and my friends 3 days to hike that trail. This guy ran it under 12 hours... what a legend
Thanks for posting this! Your videos always inspire me and are so well done!
You truly have a talent Ethan. Adding another place to my bucket list thanks to you and Dylan.
Sorry, just watched this again. I really like the way you put this together. Cheers mate - thanks for putting this out
This version of the film is fantastic!!! Love the humorous moments you included here!
bro you guys are making some of the best running videos online right now. Thanks for all the content, you have been such a resource, and actually were a primary gateway into running for me in the last two months. Working towards a sub 20 5k, and up to marathon and beyond. Thanks for all you do, and being such a glue to the running community. The work you're doing is valuable and life-changing.
Beaches for sure like the black sands here in NZ. Wicked film and amazing run. Props and respect all round.
Wow absolutely incredible, that was just one of the most craziest coastal routes I’ve ever seen!! Another video masterpiece 🙌
Did some backpacking in that area years ago...such a beautiful area...lots of Elk and Bears....and when I was there...lots of rain !
Extremely awesome job Ethan. Bravo, keep doing it.
Spectacular scenery.
Loved this. Truly a hidden gem up a Lost Coast!
This reminds me of trying to run from Goleta to Santa Barbara: Roughly 15 miles on the beach where you have to time to tide. So fun
Just awesome! And as you were saying in your podcast interview it was such a moving moment when the buckle was handed over to Dylan. Wonderful :-) Thanks Ethan
Great work as always, Ethan, this version has a lot more charm, and that relatable touch to it... Hopefully, one day I get tou your storytelling level :) I'm only beginning.
Amazing run and outstanding film. Great job to all involved!
excellent coverage of the trail. Props to all!
Epic run & video. Could watch a whole movie of this!
New Ginger Movie makes my day. Thank you.
We’ve a few stretches of coastline like that here in Cornwall, but the black sand makes it look even more dramatic! Great video as always 👍
Fergus Stevenson Will be back in Cornwall for the Plague in August. 👍🏻
A sweet inspiring film, loved the scenery!
What another gem I just came across...Cant tell you how much I enjoy finding some of your "oldes but goodies" Cant help but wonder if Dylan still has the FKT there? Thank you
That was awesome! Great footage and editing!
That was F-ING AMAZING footage !
Sweet! Love it, Ethan! 😀👍
Inspirational as all hell. Makes the 14 miler I've got lined up for later this afternoon seem like a cakewalk, so... thanks for that ;)
About time!!!! Good stuff!!!
Another awesome video.
Thanks Ethan! Great running achievement captured; Great movie making. Nicely done! [I had such anxiety watching this LOL -- getting caught by rising tide is one of my truly irrational fears -- made worse by two times in my life narrowly beating the incoming sea (and outgoing tidal ponds!) .
Amazing!! Love it!!
inspiring, as always! good job!
Reminds me a little of New Zealand's black sand beaches- a really nicely put-together film. And a big fan of the map myself / all-timer - I think was the phrase. - legit
Awesome video, awesome running!!!
incredible achievement! and I thought carrying a surfboard and a case of beer into the lost coast was impressive! ;)
Awesome!
Loved it. It left me wanting more! Looks like he was holding your 360 cam? I need to get me one of those.
Epic run !!!
You outdid yourself again Ethan! Such talent ;-)
Loved it. 20/20 =)
Awesome
Everyone shoud hike this if able to. Same with the Olympic peninsula.
Amazing
Very cool Ethan!
just wow
More please.
That was sick
Awesome Ethan! Beter that the Red Bull version 😜
This trail nearly killed me during a winter storm haha. Its a rough environment.
Incredible filmmaking once again, Ethan. You going back to film the whales next time?!
I curious why you chose to run in the winter with predominate large north swells washing so far up the beaches? Summertime in that area is absent large north swells. I would recommend to anyone else who is not a surfer and just wanting to explore the lost coast along the shoreline to plan it for the summer during neap tides.
Should have done the Arcata Community Forest while you were here.
Thanks for this longer version !
I was frustrated and felt it was too short !
I would have liked to know more of the trail and tide. If one goes southbound how much time does it give %tides ?
I'm in France and we have quite a few "race vs tide" in our wide flat bays but their réputation is from the bodycount !
So how safe would it be for a normal trail runner ?
The tides hit twice a day - there are lots of publicly available tide charts for the full year so you get a clear timetable :)
Wow
D-Bo on the Lo-Co
I love this version! Many laughs.
I had to include DBo's personality! He's hilarious!
TheGingerRunner Truly. Somewhat dry sense of humor.
That's gonna be tide.
Incredible location...just not sure how to feel about this Red Bull overabundance
over-abundance?
Yes Ethan - afraid to say that I’ve mixed feelings when I see a logo being so much on show, especially when that is true of videos by otherwise independent video-makers like yourself. Plus RB is a pretty lame drink that that does not have much to do with any athletic ethic. Hope this clarifies. Thanks for replying though
I love how much these guys over exaggerate this trail. It takes at the most 2 days from point to point.
ultra runner + red bull, thanks, i’m out.
I don't think I could love this more if I tried! I'm tempted to record a video of a story I experienced in the Mattole Campground. As wild and remote as that place is it attracts the crazies both as residents and transients. The story is way too much to type out in the comment section. Just a word of warning to all who dare pass, the hills there hold secrets and danger and to ignore the risks could spell disaster. Because this experience I speak of happened with my family present I don't think I'll be able to talk my wife into tackling this with me. She got me into running and we are a team in every race we enter. To take this on would have to be a mutually agreed upon adventure. It's a shame because I love that place! Unfortunately I fear it now too! Comment if you want to hear the story, especially any of the key players here, Ethan, Dylan, Ricky, etc....
It's definitely a region to be respected - both geographically and those who reside there. We came across our fair share of interesting personalities and did our utmost diligence in leaving no trace and ruffling zero feathers. People who live this remotely do so for a reason.
