I did a practice run of Avernus after watching this, and then played Acheron. I can tell you, playing Acheron felt like a blessing and honestly I’d rather bot a top 100 ILL level than play Avernus in practice mode again. Avernus practice run: 2385 attempts and Acheron: 748 attempts Edit: played Silent Clubstep afterwards and reached the 65% dual in only 163 attempts

Levels like ispy and change of scene going viral makes me really happy because it shows that people still value a level being really cool even if it's not the hardest thing in the game
This is the level where the first layout and part showcase was extremely hype due to it showing off all the best parts and then just everything fell off after that, like not even a single aspect feels like it has improved since its first public showcase. Still makes me sad to this day with how much potential this level had
i think the gameplay problems are because buffing a naturally easier level can only go so far before it gets bad. if you try to buff something like deadlocked, the naturally easy gameplay would be hard to buff and make fun. i think that was the problem with avernus.
The whole "this insane demon feels like a buffed medium demon" is a very common complaint that I reckon carries over to top levels as well. You're totally right that buffing can only go so far, a level needs to have the difficulty built in to the gameplay

i cant judge the gameplay but deco-wise personally i think its alright, its not amazing but its not abhorrent either. its quite inconsistent in terms of deco but each individual part is really cool, especially the usage of blocks (like you pointed out, the ground spikes formed to be decoration and hold lava or whatnot)
I also think the deco isn’t horrible or great, but I do think it’s crazy that ppl hate on Avernus when Acheron looks so much worse. Idc if it’s a remake of Tartarus it still doesn’t look good compared to the rest of the top 10

If you remove these details that level would be like a top 20 (I am not good enough to judge) and it would be completely fine and enjoyable. The creator just wanted a hard level and it seems like it might have been too easy so that annoying shit just got added for no good reason. Just a guess tho. I only did a few practice runs and I am not good enough to judge.

I played it a little and I can say that second half is really cool to be honest. It's satisfying and consistent so I'm probably going to do 57-100 but I'm not going to touch first half
A little trick I found for doing extreme demon wave gameplay in practice (as long as you're not planning to beat the level in normal) is to spam checkpoints until you can just hold out of a checkpoint to get through the gap, and then do that again except this time you hold and spam checkpoints until you can just let go to get through the gap, and then just repeat that.
I mean great video as always, now to my request, could you check out some of greafers levels (preferably in video as most are made as semi-impossible) I'm a huge fan of his levels as they really take a new hell theme.
It screws up the experience from the players from 8 years ago, where the ship is expected to go through the spike a little bit, making these fixed hitboxes make it so tedious and unfun and such a bad level
Avernus is a great level in my eyes, it might have fixed hitboxes, but the visuals are really well done, it took the hell theme and made it ACTUALLY GOOD.

I feel like most of the difficulty is coming from the beginning of the level with all the fixed hit boxes. Zoink is one to love buffing and you can’t really change him. If he wants to buff he can. Also it’s gonna be funny when the top 10 is gonna be filled with zoink completions lol.
I hate how much he buffs and trick telling zoink not to buff KOCMOC but zoink doing it, is a sense of entitlement since trick never wanted him to buff it yet carried on with it. I don’t like the buffs he does but you can’t stop him from doing it. Only gets a problem when one still buffs despite being told not to and being the original verifier of the level (like trick verifying kocmoc)

There's this challenge me and my friends came up with, where you play levels starting on 1 FPS, and if you get say 4% on the level, then you set your FPS to 4, then repeat until someone beats the level. It could be a cool video to do with some other GD CZcamsrs :)

I am not willing to play levels like this but I have beaten a fair share of extreme demons years ago and I still have an extended list record (yatagarasu). The state of the current list is horrid, and what especially deters me from trying any top 20 levels is frame perfects, which are basically just dice rolls because nobody can be accurate enough to make them every time, it’s pretty much outside of what’s humanly possible especially considering occasional frame drops or lag spikes which can mess with muscle memory. Considering the fact that this level has strange buffs and hitboxes, in addition to like 30 frame perfects, that makes this level pretty unfun in practice and especially to beat it. The worst part I feel is that some clicks are not sight readable because of the hitboxes which makes learning this pure muscle memory. That is true for most gameplay but when you are gauging when to let go for a ship timing, for example, there is somewhat of a visual aspect to it
