    So a group of us at Gen Con bought Lorcana when it was released and we were super excited. We then went and demoed Star Wars Unlimited and all of us thought the same thing, this game is just a lot better mechanically and the back and forth actions make for a better game. We are all in on Star Wars Unlimited now and dropped Lorcana as well. One other note is that this game has had the best launch of any new TCG I have seen in a very long time. The hype is building now, so stock is getting harder to come by, but everything was readily available at launch, unlike most other games. This is Asmodee's big release this year, and it shows. I am excited about this game!

    For those of you like Joey, who don’t want to play “ keep up” with a collectible game (which is totally valid) but you still enjoy the gameplay, I recommend buying singles of cards you like and building a cube. It turns collectible games into an infinitely replayable board game type environment.

    And every weekend since we’ve been selling out SW:U events in our brick and mortar store.

    I have a lot of Star Wars Destiny stuff and went in with no interest wanting to hate this game. But after playing it and buying the starter deck and a booster box I think the game is really amazing. Very easy to teach but lots of decision making in a very quick fun game.

    For those who don’t want to dive into a tcg, but might enjoy this as a dueling card game (can be played 2 player or multiplayer) just remember, starter decks are going to come out with each new set, and the release cadence is pretty moderate at only 3 per year. So next year this time, just buying the starter decks and nothing else, you’d have a great card game system, with 6 different assymetric decks to pick from.

    Solid game. The game is quick, easy to learn, and engages both players at every step. My son stays focused on the game because he isn't waiting for me to complete my whole turn, I am just doing one action and then he takes an action (usually something down right mean). This game keeps coming back to the table not just because of it's accessibility but because of the variety. No two games feel the same. The leader/base combinations really freshen it up if you want a change of pace. As you play you can really see the opportunities for expansion, too. There is room to grow in future expansions. FFG has a hit on their hands and I'm not sure my wallet can repel firepower of that magnitude (but I'll enjoy it!).

    You can have a ton of fun with this just with the starter deck plus a bunch of commons/uncommons.

  • @sylinmino
    @sylinmino Před 2 měsíci +9

    I will say that the starter decks aren't particularly competitively viable, but the CARDS INSIDE almost all are. This is because the starter decks are (correctly, and for good reason because it's a great way to teach the game and add replayability too) meant to be jacks of multiple trades but don't particularly excel at one. But it makes the decks super modular and easy to enhance. They're amazing products whether starting out in the game, or for using for deckbuilding.

  • @sylinmino
    @sylinmino Před 2 měsíci +3

    I like the art style of this game a lot, actually. I love the stylized look, and how it evokes specific feelings for each scene depicted. Yes, it's inconsistent in style, but it also *leans* into that diversity in a very intentional feeling way.
    I vastly prefer it to the Deckbuilding Game art. That game has very solid art but it doesn't evoke emotion and feeling like this art does.

  • @Granite-ny8up

    The ease of building these decks is so important - for the average player, they don't have time to dedicate and pour over options.

    The booster opening experience is one of the best I have seen in CCGs. Each pack contains 16 cards and you can actually pull 4 rares in a pack if you're lucky. I opened a double Legendary pack(Foil Luke, and Devastator) which was awesome too.
    Every pack contains 16 cards
    1 Leader (Common or Rare, no current Uncommon or Legendary leaders, but the chase card here are the showcase leaders)
    1 Base
    9 Commons (chance for a hyperspace common in here too)
    3 Uncommons (The 3rd Uncommon slot can be a hyperspace uncommon, rare, or legendary)
    1 Rare or Legendary
    1 Foil(Any rarity, can also be a Foil Hyperspace card)

    • @CivilianZero
      @CivilianZero Před 2 měsíci

      Eh, the pack sounds good on paper, but the poor box/case ratios make it feel disappointing fast. Though, to be fair, most western TCGs have pretty awful ratios. They’re focused around high rolling big hits rather than getting a consistent spread across boxes.

    So I love the art design as a whole. In person, the art/graphic design works very well imo. I also enjoyed the more realistic artwork of all the other FFG Star Wars games, but to be honest, that would have been boring here - just more of the same. I love that the art here is wholly unique. Sure, some pieces I don’t like as much, but most are very cool - and especially the hyperspace versions of the cards (full art/borderless) look slick.

    One game mode I enjoy is draft, and drafting is very viable in SWU with official rules for the draft mode. I played a couple of drafts at my LGS and it was really fun. Each draft deck is a leader, base and at least 30 cards instead of 50. If you like the challenge of going in blind and building from there, it's great. And sometimes you find cool interactions the you wouldn't normally think of.

    I got a chance to play this over the weekend. I do like the simplicity of it over other card games. That being said, I question the depth of gameplay. With only one action per turn, you are never going to get off crazy combos like you can in games like M:TG. I also question being able to build unique, interesting or themed decks like you can in M:TG, like sold green creature decks, or red direct damage. These are just my thoughts off my limited exposure to the base decks. Any comments that tell me I am wrong are welcome.

This review convinced me not to bother with Lorcana! Not sure that I would get SWU, but I know not to get Lorcana! 😁 I might get the starter pack of SWU as a 2 player out of the box card game, but the price and timing have to be right just because I’m not a huge fan of straight up card games, more of a board game fan. They've done such a great job of presenting all the information on the cards in a clear and easy to grok way. I've found FFG's graphic design can be very hit or miss, hated Destiny's graphic design for instance, but its done well here.

BUT to those that do, I would pick this over the others (lorcana, etc) to date. I cant speak to the deck building part, but we found in the playtest at Pax that the side that takes the lead early was harder to knock off, but there are some cards that can help turn the tide. I prefer the FFG SW card game, but for what it is, its fine. The art is meh - give me comic book/ modern card art. Good luck to those investing in this.

    That said, even though I like FFG's old Star Wars art much better, I AM glad they tried something new with Unlimited. It's not as good, but we've also been seeing a lot the same art in FFG's Star Wars games for over a decade now; from X-Wing to the Deckbuilding Game. Our local Lorcana leagues here have only grown since Inklands release and we have a few folks that are also playing SWU, but thus far no one is jumping ship for one game or another. I hope SWU is super successful and is a game I would totally have been into 10 years ago. I'll probably dabble in SWU a bit as league play takes off here and I give a lot of credit for the really smooth release of SWU compared to Lorcana. Though to be fair to Ravensburger, Lorcana was their first TCG, and this Fantasy Flight has done this before and that experience is showing. Anyway the point here is there is more than enough space for players to play multiple TCGs.

So an initial buy-in of $100 to $150, plus another $180/yr on monthly expansions, and $70 or so on big box expansions.

Zee pointed out that there are so many unique art pieces (250+) that it would be impossible to have the high quality artwork of their other games, hopefully some of the rough edges will be smoothed out by the third or fourth set. While it is a "TCG" there are many common and uncommon cards that are powerful and staples of the Meta decks, there is plenty of fun to be had without requiring the chase cards.
