Randy, you are one of THE best people in the outdoor industry. You are real. You get what hunting is REALLY about, the experiences we have, the TIME spent with friends and loved ones, the challenge of pitting yourself against the animals, the journey, the meat...the sustenance...a trophy to you is not always about the biggest bull or buck. You are NOT about the sponsors, and the 'look at me'...you have THE HIGHEST amount of respect from me, and I think from everyone who watches you and knows who you are as a person, as a hunter. You are so ethical and honest. You are NOT a commercial for pushing products, and that burns me quick when people do that...and I have quit watching so many people's shows for that reason. You are a real hunter, a great person...and you set the standards for what we, as hunters should be...and how we should look at hunting. It is a way of life, a form of sustenance gathering that human beings HAD to do before this animal factory crap started. You live your life and hunt the way we as hunters, and as human beings should look at and also base our lives off of. Thank you, Rick. That is very nice of you to write that comment. We turn down a lot of sponsorship opportunities due to it not being gear we think will work for our style of hunting or there are requests that we dumb down our show by pimping product. Just not our style. Our audience is the serious hunter and they don't want to be insulted with the ridiculous product pimping. It costs us money to approach it this way, but it is what we stick to.
I am lucky to have some great people supporting me at home, and in this endeavor. Without them, none of it would be possible and our message would not be what you see.

I have learned over the years to keep a sleeping that rolls up small about the size of a quart bottle of Pepsi with 2 large garbage bags commercial grade. I have spent many nights this way. It did save me one time when I blew my knee out in Colorado. 3-4lbs in a day pack saved my life.

Absolutely my favorite hunter to watch , Randy is a true hunter , I seen it in his eyes when that first cow elk came onto him at the first of this hunt , and he let down as the true hunter he is always thinking the situation over when it comes to keeping the meat safe with no spoilage , Kudos to Randy , I've never laid eyes on an elk before but I will someday till then I'll keep watching Randy.
I remember watching this one when it came out on TV one of the best episodes of any hunting show. I no longer have cable TV so I am glad these are on youtube. now if I could find the one where you got stuck in the snow and where pulled out by the game warden I want to say it was in WY but not sure.

The crazy part is, when we got back to camp the next morning, I realized I had one in my first aid kit. Troy just about killed me when I told him. I completely forgot. Oh well, he is younger and tougher than me. Thanks for watching.

Been binge watching every episode on here and I just want to say randy is by far my favorite hunter to watch the guy has respect for every animal he sees and for every area he goes he has given me the urge to go out and enjoy more public land then I’ve ever thought about hunting

Oh man!!! Day 7 and minutes to spare? One of the best elk hunt videos by far! If you danced that much over a single blue grouse I could imagine the jig you were doing off camera after sticking that elk. LMBO!
Yes, that bull was a gift from the hunting gods and I did enough of a jig to show appropriate appreciation for being showered with such luck.

I just love your videos, and this is one of your best. I first started watching for information, because I didn't grow up hunting. Your gutless method video was all I had to go on when I finally got a blacktail deer. I probably watched that video 50 times, and when I walked up to my first kill, I knew exactly what to do, thanks to you and the care you put into your videos. I know you're extremely busy, and so I appreciate the way you find time to respond to those who comment. I also appreciate your emphasis on the ethics of respecting private land.
Regarding the open bivouac, I once did this in April in Washington state, half way up a wall back in my rock climbing days. No thanks, never again. Obviously I survived but I was an absolute mess the next day, having shivered all night and lacking enough water to stay hydrated.

That is a great idea, Have to say I agree, public lands where I live are locked in by the logging companies, Green Diamond ($250.00 for season), Weyerhaeuser (bids start at $3,500.00) AND SOLD OUT IN 3 MINUTES,,,, and a few others DO THE BID STARTING AT $5,000.00 +. These logging companies charge an arm and leg to gain access to the public land that is "locked in" by their "land". It's getting harder and harder to find a place to hunt in Washington. I can't afford either guided or "logging charge permits", might just have to get "inventive" like you did. Great Vid, thanks for sharing. :)
I hope you find a way. It is public land and I would like to see the public using those lands.
I and a couple of my brothers are trying HARD, what gets me is I seen an article in Petersen's Hunting Mag a while back, and the feds are trying to sell off our public lands, and most of it, is along the area(s) of where they want to "frack" for more black crap, sad. I also seen were the state of Utah is trying to do a "land grab" below radar from the Paiute Nation in their state and got BUSTED. Crazy.
I researched this idea 20 years ago in Montana and at that time it was illegal to access private land locked BLM by aircraft and or access by crossing from BLM to BLM section by crossing at a corner section. My opinion is that those laws are horse shit good ol boy rancher laws but that's what is was back then. Has the law changed?
+TUCOtheratt - Not sure what the flying laws were 20 years ago, but now, you can fly into BLM land, so long as you land on an established two-track. US Forest Service restricts you to developed air strips with any form of aircraft. Crossing at the corners is still in legal limbo.

Christian Velasquez I have been shooting for about 30 years. And I will say this: Go to a pro shop that will take their time, one on one with you and set you up and FIT the bow to you. The brand is not as important as the feel and qualities of the bow. So many manufacturers make excellent bows these days. Shoot as many bows as you possibly can. The bow will PICK YOU. But you should shoot as many brands as you can. You will find your bow. In my opinion, Hoyt, Elite, and Prime are making the top three in the world right now...but PSE, Mathews, Bear, Obsession, and Xpedition, are all great bows too. Bowtech bows shoot and feel awesome, but they have been having issues with limbs blowing out for about eight years now, and cannot seem to get it figured out, so I would look at other companies. The last thing a new archer needs to do, is have that worry in their head that at any time their limbs could let loose.
Just find a shop that will take the time to fit you, and set a lot of bows up for you to shoot. If they won't do this, go somewhere else. SO MANY shops will push you into what ever bow brand they sell, and try to just sell you a bow and push you out the door, and they will not help you down the road. There are A LOT of archery shops that will take the time to fit you properly, let you shoot lots of bows, and help you even after the sale. So I would find a great pro shop as your first priority, THEN start shooting different bows. The brand is not important...if a company is in business, they are making great bows. Just don't buy into the the 'Mathews are the best, everything else is junk' crap that a lot of people will try. I just used Mathews as an example because that is how it is around here...their shooters are so arrogant and look down on anyone shooting anything else, when in my opinion...they are not even in the top five. They are great bows though, don't get me wrong...I guess my point is get the bow that feels the best to YOU, and the bow that YOU SHOOT the best. The brand name on the bow is not what is important. Good luck and let the bow pick you. Look really hard at Elite, they have a GREAT valley, and a high let off and solid back wall. Their bows are just SO EASY to shoot. But again, shoot every brand you can get your hands on...for me, I own Hoyt's, Elite's, and Prime's. To you, other bows may be better fit...but do yourself a huge favor, shoot all the bows you can, and the bow will pick you.

One thing I forgot to mention, that kinda goes along with fit...and is just as important, get a bow that is not too stiff on the draw weight for you. Get a lighter draw weight bow and start there. That way you can concentrate on your form and fundamentals, and you are not struggling and fighting the bow. You want to let the bow shoot the shot, you just 'guide' it...and you cannot do that if you are fighting the bow. Another good idea would be to get a good archery coach. I would teach you for free if you happen to be in Ohio...good luck.

Nope. It is a waste of effort and money while hunting elk the way we do it. Impossible to not sweat, you are still breathing, and if a bull gets downwind of you, the gig is over. You just have to play the wind.
Great hunt. The wife ask me what the cost of the helicopter is to get into and out of your hunting area?
Have you ever had an animal go onto private after you shot him on public? If so what have you done in that situation?
Chopper is about $700 per guy, depending how many you split it among and how long your flights are. I've never had an animal cross to private, so don't have any answer there. Thanks for watching.
Blayne MacPherson I shot an elk during archery season in Montana. It was right by a fence and I didn't have permission on the other side.
Right when I shot he launched himself over the fence and went about 40 yards before dying.
Fortunately there was a good blood trail and tracks showing where he had come from.
I knew it would take a few hours to go ask the landowners for permission to retrieve it so I did cross over and tag it and cleaned it out, because it was warm enough I didn't want any spoilage. Even if after I asked them, had they said no, at least I wouldn't be responsible for letting a lot of good meat go to waste. So I went out and told them what had happened and they said no problem, go get it.
And they let me take a 4 wheeler up logging roads on their land where I got within 100 yds of the elk!
So if it happens just be as ethical as you can and it should all be ok. Obviously depends on the landowner though. Treat them respectfully and give them some elk steaks!
In ND its legal to retrieve your game from private land without permission. However, you must leave your bow or firearm on the land u shot the animal on.

Learn to respect the animals you hunt. If you’re going to kill it so it can turn green, stay home and play your video games instead.
