If you liked the first installment, then finishing the initial trilogy may be very worthwhile for you. You only saw the initial glimpse of the world-building that unfolds.

I've got three sci fi recommendations for you:
Blindsight by Peter Watts: Unusual protagonist with an "outsiders" view on humanity. Interesting philosophical ideas woven into the plot. Lots of mystery and guessing.
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson: A cyberpunk classic. Presents a "far out" vision of the future. Has a bit of "The Matrix" in there, but not too much.
Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan: Sci-fi noir detective story. A very fun read - maybe too "edgy" in some places but that's not always bad.
I read Mistborn ~15 years or so ago and thought at the time that it was just "mediocre" to "okay". But around then I read A LOT of YA stuff and was kinda over it I think. Those stories tend to be very similar in a couple of places and I think when you read enough of them you're ready to move on to something else.
Love your drawings every time I catch a video of you!

Hey thanks! I've read Snow Crash when I was going through William Gibson phase and remember really liking it. Thanks for the tips - NOTED!

The whole magic system thing is weird. I've had a lot of people recommend fantasy to me by then explaining how the magic system works. It always seemed like crutch to me, like you don't need defined rules to determine how much a guy's muscles can lift.
That said, physical fitness is a good comparison. cardio vs lifting, endurance vs sprinting. helps make characters varied in their magical ability than just power.

For me, Star Wars died when The Force became something to do with midi-chlorians. Explaining the magic system killed the magic.

@@Steininger_Art There are two general types of magic systems: Soft and Hard. The Force is/was a mystical connection that started off Soft and then had a Hard mechanic thrown in that just didn't fit with the overall vibe Lucas was originally going for. If the Force was originally set up to have midi-chlorians, to have a biological/genetic component, then I wouldn't mind them at all, the magic would still be there for me. It's the fact that Lucas *retroactively* made all the spiritual aspects of the Force grounded in biology that really gets me.

Explaining the magic system and giving it hard rules big strength lies in conflict resolution. How can the hero overcome the obstacles with the limited tools at their disposal and what creative applications are there to the magic under limited hard rules.
Soft magic system with less explanation main strength often lies in the worldbuilding or metaphor & symbolism. There's also a reason why master magic users of soft systems get written out of conflicts and the MC never really masters the system. They have the potential to become deus ex machina. The MC in a hard system can master the magic without undermining the tension since it has clear defined limits.
They both have their strengths and weaknesses. I personally would like to see more modern stories write soft magic systems tho.

@@aarondubourg3706 I bet it's possible to write a master of a soft system without them becoming a deus ex machina. The pit fall is there though.
Would you call X-men a soft magic system? I'm thinking of magneto.

Whoa, nice drawing nib pen! May I ask what you are using?

Just looked it up - it's a Lamy safari 017 umbra with either a fine or medium-fine nib. The nibs are nice. It's more for writing than drawing tbh, but I love the feel of it.
