You had me at German Black Metal 😂 The ability to evolve and sideshift as an artist is always seen with suspicion by the wider audience, which implies that the group like niche and specifics. Ive always been drawn to artists who cross pollinate their works and have multiple interests. Keep up the good work mate!

Dave Rapoza was and is known for highly rendered and detailed illustration work, but when he did his Steve Lichman comic, it was in such a different style that many in his audience didn't like it. But Dave didn't care, and he successfully kickstarted it into its own project. But he never stopped doing the highly rendered stuff, so he retained his original audience too.

that's a really interesting note on variety being sacrificed. I feel that pressure with writing. I did that romance novel but I'd rather be known for fantasy, then now I'm writing scifi and I'm just hoping enough people lump scifi and fantasy into one genre

What about 25 years from now? Also.. shifting gears after you've spent all that time building in one direction - you can see how it gets messy.

It is good that all of us aren't so deep into the internets, and that there still exist us aging artists, writers, musicians doing their things like it was before the internet... But that said, I find it almost impossible to share experimental music in youtube, or anywhere, after they ruined soundcloud. it seems like the internet as a place to share art and have a tiny underground following even, exists no more. it is a shame. I would love to see instagram feeds as you described "all over the place", it would be really cool if it was a more liminal, free from conventions space for any kind of pictures etc, which it is not in the slightest.

I 100% agree with this. I notice this even with my own channel here on youtube. I feel like 10-15 years ago people consumed the internet / content differently - and there was more sharing amoung creators. Everyone now is some kind of "brand" and preserving a hold on a bubble. Not sure if you remember 'web-rings' or not - but to me that was a great example. People were far more open. We've been pushed into corners and pens and with that people's tastes have narrowed and their behavior has changed. I have no idea what will change this.

I don't know what you mean by webrings, but I remember as a young guy for example email based fantasy writing ring or a kind of circulating email thing which I joined and had feedback for my writing etc. There was stuff like that for example. So, it was much more social than during this era of social media. @@Steininger_Art

Got any updates for Hannibal? You're just as bad as Lindybeige for not updating people.

    Excellent video as always!
I've experimented with a couple different styles as I've been learning art over the years. The only worry I have is constantly becoming an amateur at something new rather than mastering it. Everything I've seen of yours is very masterfully crafted though, despite each style being so different from one another.
