I've had my ranchu goldfish, Leon, for 6 years now, one morning during his check up, I saw the early signs of dropsy. I'm so terrified, we're only on day 3 of medicine. No buldging eyes and he swims normally, but I know the high mortality rate and it scares me to no ends. Leon's been with me since college and through a lot of hardships, it's always weird for me to say around people who don't understand, but I don't know what I would do without him...
I got into the hobby at the beginning of this year, just lost my baby Winston, an oranda, last month to dropsy. He was the first fish of my own and it was just me and him for a while (until I got him a friend). Completely understand how you feel, hurt really bad when he passed, I cried and mourned for my lil boy.. Had a whole funeral and burial and decorated casket for him- and I'm 20 years old haha. People really dont get that fish are as meaningful to people as any other kind of pet. Hope he recovers!! Good luck!!
I remember my sisters white, one eyed ranchu got dropsy and we didn't really know what it was (we were pretty young) but we just did a water change and removed all the substrate and plants from the tank and the fish just got better and lived well. I guess we were lucky
This saved my goldfish. Had the whole pine coning, bulging eyes, big belly - we ran it through Epsom salts, melafix, primafix, stopped feeding for a week then fed it peas for a week and she's finally better. Didn't really know how to keep goldfish until she developed dropsy and your videos saved her! Been watching your videos religiously since!
@@alainaallen7500 she's doing great now! Been giving her Epsom salt baths once a week, feed her every second day (it's winter here), peas once a week to clear any bloating and bloodworms once a week as a treat :) We did have a scare a few weeks back, the water was really cold and we didn't change her food schedule, she ended up upside down but that's all sorted once we got a water heater :)
I have 1 that has it, I don't have any meds but I do have Epsom salts & a 10 gal aquarium will the Epsom salts work without meds till I can get some that won't be till after the 1st of next month.
Sadly in Canada we no longer have access to those meds. Or any meds for aquaria use. I have a goldfish first aid kit I gathered years ago, but most meds are out dated in it. Pray I never see dropsy again.
Wow, that’s really punishing the poor fish for stupid human decisions. Are all other animal-only medicines made illegal over there? Or are they just banning fish stuff because most people don’t care about fish?
@@octanumori No, that is not the reason. The ban started in 2018, well before Trump's suggestion. lol We aren't that dumb up here in Canada. Meds were being over used, (mostly in commercial fish farms, but the ban affected the pet trade) veterinarians got involved, and they wanted them regulated.
I’ve never had fish but your channel helped me see that they are just as amazing and have just as much personality as having a cat or dog. I can tell you care for your fish deeply
Thanks for the informative video! 🤙 The singer from the band Pinback wrote a song about his goldfish that died from dropsy (the song is called Penelope). I didn't realize the full meaning of the song until I came across this vid.
Thank you for your videos on dropsy - my goldfish seems to have recovered! My goldfish was showing signs January 28th, fed peas thinking she was bloated. No change over 24 hours later so into a hospital tank the morning of January 30th with Epsom salt. Followed your suggestions, full round of Kanaplex since that’s what I had, and a day or two later made medicated food using Focus and Metroplex (metronidazole). As of today February 6th she seems to just about be back to normal. Her behavior and appetite never changed, and I did one Epsom salt bath everyday except one day. I’ve dealt with dropsy in bettas but never a goldfish - I really just assumed she was gone, but gave it a shot anyway. So glad I did! Thank you!
Thank you for the video, I really appreciate it. I’m using kanaplex, melafix, and epson salt in hopes of helping my fish. Your videos are so helpful for this hobby! Thank you! ♥️♥️♥️ Small update, my fish has passed. I still appreciate this video to allow me to know better next time. 🕊️ Swim high, Tofu 🕊️
Many different things can cause the internal infection. The main cause is typically a weakened immune system due to stress or poor water quality. This makes it easy for an infection to take place.
Every couple weeks I feel like super underdosing a bit of mela and pimafix just in case you know?:/ Have a 55 for my ranchu so I'll put 20 gallons worth of both.. it was 50 bucks of a ranchu so I'm paranoid anything happening
This video is kinda sad, but still hopeful. I hope it helps a lot of people and their goldfish. Is it a genetic thing? If you have responsible breeders, can you get goldfish with strong kidneys?
My sweet little Kohaku, a white-n-red Telescope fancy, recently developed the later stage of dropsy (the pineconing), and I know it's probably terminal. I'm not going to deny that I was neglectful to him, failing to do regular and sufficient water changes for so long that it poisoned him. I ordered clove oil to humanely euthanize him with, and I'm going to do better for my other two fancies, Sanke and Kintsugi :(
One of my big Thai Orandas got dropsy and I caught it early and have ran 4 epsom salt baths so far, I might even dose the entire tank and currently I've been fasting them just to reduce bloat and hopefully prolong the stress on the goldfishs internals but we'll see what happens.

Watching this video to learn about dropsy since I saw a couple of comments in the latest Lil Dumpy update video saying that he looks like he's developing dropsy.
I bought a new chocolate goldfish yesterday its not really spiky but on its back the scales are a bit spiky not much. I suppose its due to stress so I let it adjust for a week and if its like that i all go to a vet for a certain diagnosis
At first, I thought Mewtwo was just getting fat. When the bulging kept going and was clearly uneven - I realized he was terribly ill and I had goofed. Watching this, I feel a bit less guilty about his current condition...what I didn't know is what I didn't know. When I get home from work, I think I'm going to have to make a hard choice. I'lll take a more informed look when I get home, but I can't imagine he isn't in pain. Ugh. I'll have to do the process without my dog knowing too, she should not witness her father extinguishing one of our family. She saved that fish when she was a puppy. True story, she wook me up and made me follow her into the other room when Mewtwo had once jump out of his tank.
Hi Luke :) This is going to be a long comment, but any help would be deeply appreciated:) Two out of my four goldfish have late stage dropsy; I do not have any fish meds (I am planning to get some) or a quarantine tank. So far I have put a low dose of epsom salt into the tank (since I don’t have a quarantine one) and given the sick fish a separate salt bath once a day for around ten minutes. I’m really concerned about what to do without a quarantine tank, like do I just add the meds into the tank even with the healthy fish? I also don’t have an aquarium heater. So what I’d like to know is: 1. What medication is the best for dropsy (one fish is having buoyancy problems but they both still have an appetite) 2. When I get the medications, how do I treat the two fish without hurting the healthy ones; like do I just add it straight in(I don’t have a quarantine tank) 3. Should I increase the time my fish are in the salt bath (so far it’s ten min; I didn’t want to over doit since they are still very young) 4. Should I feed my fish higher quality food with more vegetables to prevent protein build up (their diet is just flakes; I know flakes are bad since they make the goldfish gulp in heaps of air, but they are too small to eat pellets) 5. Is there a way to treat/ help treat dropsy apart from meds, salt and heat? Thank you so much :)) I love your channel
say the gold fish has a skin parasite, it’s scratching and fin flicking, what would you treat with. Also a lot of them mess with biological bacteria in the filters how do you deal with this side. Even if moved to a hospital tank, the treatments last 7 days but the water quality will be getting worse without water changes. Any tips would be great
I’m gonna start breeding some fish soon I need a couple of smaller tanks and I need to get filters and I can start I’m gonna try to start in the fall for having everything I need
NOOO DONT START IN THE FALL! Goldfish breeding season is late spring-early summer, that’s when you’ll start seeing white tiny dots on male goldfish’s gills. That’s when you know they’re male. Do more research on goldfish breeding, he has a video about it.
