    A little update would be to use a spray bottle, they are very inexpensive nowadays. I plan to use a spray bottle, spray my pruners, let it work for a few minutes, wipe them down, and move on to the next plant or tree.

    Hey cool video. Another video (sterilizing pruners) did a study between bleach, pine sol, lysol, alcohol, mouthwash, hydrogen peroxide, kocide and agri-strep (both fungicides) and found that the first three were the most effective at full strength; bleach and pine sol were corrosive to the metals and lysol was not. The effectiveness of the solution went down after 24 hours.

    Cameron, one thing I would add to your excellent presentation is for everyone not to forget to label the Jar. So everyone would know what is in it. Very important. Name and Date of the solution made.

      Great idea, Paulie! I hadn't considered it since it's in my orchard shed ( I'm the only one using it). I think that's great advice.

      @@TheBusyGardener I figured that you are the only one using it, but for other people. Because the last thing you want is someone thinking it is Iced tea so something. Bad outcome.

    I inherited a crepe myrtle. I think it has crown gall. From being pruned after a sick rose bush was pruned. I hope all before I moved in. So yeah. Now I'm learning how to clean tools I thought would rust at worst.

      I'd rather learn my lesson before I make a mistake, but I've got a stack of learning from experience also 😭

    Would it be okay to use Lysol spray for the average gardener. One video recommended it. I grow flowers and ornamental bushes and am careful with selection of a few trees/bushes. I enjoyed your video.

      Yes, absolutely! I actually now prefer this over the dunk method. It's less messy, and much more convenient!

    I've been mostly using 90% isopropyl alcohol, but sometimes I'll use a dilute bleach solution. I've found that the bleach makes spots on your nice fancy Felco blades reallly quickly. Oops. Guess they're still sharp and clean though :)

    @the busy gardener do you have to rinse the Lysol solution off the shears with water before cutting the next plant? or can you just wipe it off with a towel?

      They can be wiped off, but I usually just shake them dry

    Think I identified fire blight on my Apple trees a couple weeks ago. I only did some rudimentary research when I noticed the problems on the trees, but looked to be what it was. Didn't really seem like something we should see here in So. Cal., but I didn't want to take the chance and started pruning heavily as you did. Most of it was on a single tree, even with the high density planting, but have had to cut one or two branches on a couple of other trees.

      @TheBusyGardener  Před 5 lety +1

      I'm not sure how prevalent fire blight is down here, but i've heard Tom Spellman say he won't even try to grow pears because it's such an issue. That being said, this specific Asian pear and my Granny Smith apple were the only trees that appeared to show signs of blight. I'm probably being a bit dramatic in my cut, but I want to ensure I get out in front of the bacteria. Does no good to prune lightly, only to find that I missed some of the blight.

      @@TheBusyGardener My Pink Lady tree was the one that was hit the hardest. Agree wholeheartedly with getting out in front of it. I went a good 6 inches below any part of a stem that didn't look quite normal.

    Should i disinfect the tools in between cutting off a sick stem and cutting off another part of the same plant?

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  Před 3 lety +3

      Ooooh, important question! If you're cutting off any sick branch, you should DEFINITELY disinfect between cuts. Otherwise, you'll likely transmit the pathogen to the healthy parts of the tree.

    Does Lysol chemical residue left on the blade not harm the plants when cutting?

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I haven't any issues! It could be solved by wiping with a cloth if that was a concern
