- This is all about how to get a snake plant to grow quickly, how often to water a snake plant. Snake plants are notoriously known for being slow growers. But they tend to also be a house hold favourite because of their ability to survive in low light conditions. In this gardening in Canada video we look at how to get your snake plant to not only survive but thrive in your home. Slow snake plant growth can be easily be turned into rapid growth when we give a lot more sunshine and a little bit more water. We do this of course using science & looking at the history/nature of the sansevieria family.

@@GardeningInCanada hi! Thanks for the great and informative video! I have divided my snake plants into 19 plants! I plan to give them as Christmas gifts. The leaves are a little yellow on some of them. I was wondering if you'd use this in the non growing months to 'green up' the leaves so they look better when I give them away. If so, should it be diluted? I've given a fish emulsion and chelated iron combination twice so far - one a week and diluted to less than 1/2 the recommended amount. Thanks in advance for any help!
Finally! I have always been so confused by the advice people give about this group of plants. My grandmother gave me her plant that must be around 60 years old now, and I have been taking care of it since I was a kid. It is a monster! It grows as fast as bamboo especially when I take it out in the spring and summer. It blooms every year and almost every other year I have to chop it up and give half of it away so that I can even carry it inside because it just gets so freaking huge. But I have always been confused because my grandmother told me it needs tons of water and light and almost literally everywhere else I have heard the opposite. I just keep taking care of it the way my grandmother told me to because it grows like it wants to take over the world under her instructions, but I always wondered if this plant is just a mutant or something because it behaves so differently and likes all the things people say it shouldn't. This makes so much sense now!

@@AccessHollywoood I have just put it directly in the sun before when taking it outside thinking nothing would tame its power but I ended up giving it sunburn pretty bad. My thinking was that it was in such a bright place in my house that it wouldn't matter but it turns out that the glass windows in our house protect from UV light so it kinda prevents plants from developing tolerance to direct sun. After that I cut off the burnt parts and put it under a tree and it bounced right back. The leaves that grow in the direct sun are much thicker and have deeper white pigmentation on them. Now I take it out and move it to the shade of the tree and then after about a month I put it in a place that gets direct sun for about half the day and that seems to be fine for it as long as it has lots of water. And I mean A LOT, it's reeeeeeally thirsty in June/July where I live. I'm in the southern part of the US btw. It gets super hot and humid in the summer so I wonder if the humidity has something to do with it as well.

I needed this video!And everything you're saying makes complete sense. I own several snake plants and the one I have in my kids room ,getting south facing 🌞, and watering it as soon as it drys is huge much bigger than my other ones. Nothing you're saying is wrong.

This is how I have treated my snake plants the past 40 years and with amazing results. People have always commented on how big mine grew in a fairly short time and how healthy they looked. I didn’t know the science behind it so that’s fun to learn about.
Mine often flowers too - although many believe it’s a sign of stress.
Mine flowered in a west window.
Mine just started flowering under a dim-ish grow light in a north-facing window. I don't know about stress, but it has recently sent up 5 or 6 new stalks that are pressing against the pot, so it may have root bound signaling telling it to spread further.

16 and counting I have them in on my south facing window and water them once a week because I want then to grow faster I'm glad that I'm not the only one who does this because I am aware they come from sunny environments

I had mine outdoors in full sun all summer. We had a LOT of rain this year. I didn't have to water except for maybe twice the entire summer. They were pretty much, over watered all summer. They did great ! They shocked me. Even my aloe quadrupled in size. ( Usually they don't do well for me. )
I used to have 80+ species of Sansevieria 😅 and then I got introduced to aroids. I had to sell and giveaway my other collection. I only got about 30 left. In my opinion and experience in order for them to grow faster is for them to grow in well draining soil, bright light they can withstand full sun if you acclimate them in full sun SLOWLY. Do not overwater them. Wipe their leaves cause they get really dusty :) I love all the things you said in this video. New things to learn :)
Just to add. You water the sansevieria depending on your soil, how much light you give them, your environment.

@@GardeningInCanada not really. I always think each of my plants have different personalities regardless of their genus lol. I do enjoy propagating aroids more than Sansevieria.
I agree generally. I want my plants to thrive, not just survive. I propagated one about 5 years ago and it took forever to take off but now, seems to be thriving. I give as much light as I can, water sparingly, more frequently. They are all pretty happy.

So cool, thank you! For a long time I only had the “typical” snake plant, but over the last couple of years, have acquired other variations. I am usually really fearful of overwatering, so I use a moisture meter. But, this information is very helpful and appreciated! Happy new year!

I have found this to be true in my experience too. I have mine in very well-draining soil so I water them frequently. And I've noticed that when I put them in brighter light, they grow much faster. I hadn't gone as far as full sun, but I will keep that in mind.
It’s crazy right?! They go wild I feel bad when people have these plants that put out one new leaf a year.
You, I put an ad on marketplace last year asking if anyone had a snake plant they needed to divide and got 2 given to me. One was at deaths door and is my inside plant. The other was large and is my outside thriver! It gets watered about half what my pothos gets, both are on my covered front porch. It gave me several new leaves after it recovered from being savagely split and given to me. It’s about 1/3 larger in one summer. My indoor one, I don’t think it’s given me a single leaf rofl it’s the perfect size in a beautiful pot and custom stand. It’s gorgeous and sits in the window by the front door. Clearly not enough light. Will fix that soon.
I got a mikado about 3 months ago and it had a large pup I separated that is now giving me new leaves. The mother plant has given me a new pup with 3 leaves on it. All of them are sitting in a window. And omgosh they are such a gorgeous much healthier green than when I got them. ❤❤❤
I put all my snake plants outside. Changed the soil in the ones that had infestations. Rinsed the roots with water and sprayed them with Ortho for plants. Put in fertilizer and left them outside. The rain got to them and they bursted with new growth. When they’re in the sun they love moisture.

In Western Australia the snake plant grows like a weed. I put them in my shallow fish pond and they grow fine with no care. I can grow them in water bowls inside or outside also without any soil media. I do live in a hot dry environment though. Thank you for your videos Ashley, they are so helpful.

I tend to buy most of my plants from the clearance section too. They tend to be over watered by the time I find them. Sometimes they just need a bright warm spot to rehabilitate other times I have to completely repot them in well draining potting mix.
I never water on a schedule, I just stick my finger in and check.

I have one very small sansivieria growing in a small bowl full of fish tank water! Just water! It’s put out so many new roots and loves living aquatically. So yes! You can grow sansivieria in water!!!

I finally bought one this last year. Within a few months.. I had 3. After dividing.. another popped up. However growth has been slow. With this advise I'm giving it more light and moisture. I watered lightly every few weeks.. nomatter how much it tolerates drought.. it dont feel right letting it go bone dry and let it stay that way. No drooping or damage.. but not the growth rate I'd like. I'm sure after this knowledge.. it'll improve. Very much appreciated!

Because I'm a newb and didn't know... I've had mine on the southeast facing back deck since end of May zone 5 and letting it get rained on and it's doing WAY better than when I bought it back in November and had in low light and barely watered over the winter. Total beginners fluke. I had moved it outside because of my indoor cat who likes to chew 🤦♀️ and I had no other place to put it. This winter its going to have to be behind closed door in low light spare room but good to know it will be ok there. Thanks for all the amazing info.

I took a cutting when I was in San Diego (where it grows outside happily) and it took forever to form a plant. It seemed happier when it became very pot bound. It does love lots of sun and regular watering. I do not fertilize often, typically in summer when it seems to be actively growing. I have a total of 7 ( 6 varieties) and adore their look! The Samaria is in my husband’s care and has slowed to almost no growth since he put it in a relatively low light bathroom with a small window. I told him it wasn’t ideal!

I just throw mine outside for the summer then indoors out of direct sun in the winter and water when I remember. They are taking over the house, bursting ( literally) out of their pots!

I am so glad I found you. I am in South Africa. I have 11 different snake plants in my collection. I also found they like more water. They also grow fast for me. I don't put them in full sun. It is very hot here. They do prefer some shade. I keep them outside and on my stoep (covered). The cam thing I learnt about when doing research for spekboom. You explained it well. People ofter ask me for plants that will produce oxygen... And then I roll my eyes.. Photosynthesis and chlorophyll... All plants make oxygen. I know listened to the leave video also. Very interesting. I have always left my leaves as mulch. I never knew about the carbon thing and i do notice a lot of fungi in my garden. I do have a fertilizer high in nitrogen that we occasionally use everywhere. It makea sense

I have not had the luxury of trying things out with full sun but I have noticed that by watering the one that I have even in a north facing window at my job has really seen it grow substantially over the last three months or so

IT WORKS!! I watched your video a couple of weeks ago, freshened up their soil and put my snake plants out in the summer sun and rain. Its been a fairly hot summer here in the Chicago area (not record-breaking heat like lots of other places in 2023) and all the snake plants seem very happy and are growing fast, with more dramatic variegation. I don’t leave them out in the heaviest thunderstorms. I avoid watering them with the hose between rain storms unless they’re dry. I fertilize now and then. They are growing fast, including the pups of the Whale Fin i got in June.

I was wondering why my snake plant has been growing like crazy compared to some of the stories I've heard about it being a slow grower. Mine gets lots of sun and I water regularly and it has 4 pups (one is almost as tall as the parent leaves) in a couple months.

These are my favorites. there's a florist near my house that has a little house plant selection and they sell these all the time for really cheap so my windows are full. I water them usually once a week except in the winter they need a little less. I build 3 shelves across the north facing window in my bedroom and it's perfect for them. (also in Canada -southern Ontario) i have 17 snake plants lol

I agree. The more light you provide, the more they grow, the more water they will need. In the dark corner of your home, they are not receiving much light, they will not dry out as quickly or 'drink' as much water so they will require less. I used to keep aquarium plants, it was always the light that was the driving force for growth.

I’m new to the snake plant I was looking for an air purifier plant and stumbled upon this beautiful snake plant and I decided I had to buy it and learn about it how to make it grow tall and big. I only have a young one right now and trying to learn it’s likes and dislikes and so far I seem to be keeping it happy cuz it is looking more perky every day and I’ve only owned it for a week
I somehow got mine to bloom a couple times. I think it was a combination of direct sun and watering (indoors). They have a beautiful perfume
Direct sun makes a major difference
At about 5:40, you say that obligate CAM plants can photosynthesize normally if conditions are right. This would actually be a facultative situation, where the CAM photosynthesis can be switched off. Obligate species cannot change.

This video is very helpful to me. I recently purchased my first snake plant from the grocery store. It is currently in quarantine for observation for pests. So far, so good. I was planning to put it in a low light area, but after hearing your advise I think I will try putting it in a bright light. What kind of humidity do they need.?
Just regular old home humidity between 30-50

I just watched another video, in which it was explained that snake plants CAN be kept in the dark, but they prefer a lot of light. It's just that they die very slowly, therefore people think they are doing fine. So maybe it's best to put them in a light area part of the day or every other day. And maybe you could explain why my snake plant started out with yellow edges, but new shoots don't have yellow edges, but are completely green?

I was struggling with mine, but I had an idea to repot in pure leca balls. It sits in a window with afternoon sun snd thoroughly soak the medium once a week. I’ll try putting it outside this summer. I have seen them growing outdoors in Caribbean countries.
I think obligate CAMs can only conduct CAM photosynthesis, and facultative CAM plants can switch pending conditions. So any extra growth is likely just due to more lighting in my opinion.

I found this video and watched it. Love it. When I wanted to watch it again I liked to have never found it again 😫 so happy I did. This totally makes sense to me. Where I live they are cold hardy and grow pretty fast. Sansevieria are a new fascination for me. I've only got 3 varieties so far but I plan to change that. Thanks for the informative video. My grandma told me the ole, "drop a couple matches on the top soil of your snake plants and water one all the way thru- you're sure to have pups and new growth not too long afterwards."

I watched this previously and found it extremely interesting. So i prepped my sansevierias and put all of them under grow lights about 2 months ago. I’m now going to start watering them every 2 weeks. This is my second 2 weekly watering. I’m testing your theory and will give you updates in a month or so. I currently have about 20 or so different types. Wish me luck. And thanks again for the great ideas you share with us

I potted my snake pot in a bigger pot and growing like crazy got a lot of babies
The pot is not the reason why they're growing like crazy, it's the light. If you live where she lives in Canada, and have a slow grower near a northern window, then it won't grow faster by getting a bigger pot, unless you're a lazy plant owner, and consider to re-pot years too late.

Your watering sounds find its likely just transplant stress. Lots of light and water wil help

I’m totally going to try this! Could you please do a video on how to help a plant that’s curling? I have a Masoniana sansevieria that is folding like a taco and I don’t know how to help it. On the internet, some say it’s due to overwatering, some say it’s under watering, some say fungus. If you have advice, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks!
Oh man. It’s most likely under watering causing the cell walls to collapse and pull.
Great info! I was able to propagate from a leaf cutting very quickly because I kept it close under an intense grow light. I"m considering moving one or two of my snake plants outside this summer, but I haven't ever transitioned any of my houseplants outdoors for the summer. Do you have any advice (maybe a video?) on doing that to help it adjust well?

True, but I don't think you even need to have lots of sun from a south window or grow light to get good growth. Sure, it helps a lot, but I had mine in a north-west window for many years, and they grew quite fast, had to repot every 2 or 3 years.
It's the watering schedule, and the amount you give them that in my opinion is the key, too many people are just too scared to overwater them and let them go dry too long to avoid any risk. I think the plant adjusts to that, thinking it's a dry period, and take's its foot off the gas.
Thank you now I don't have to get my big strong husband to move my snake plant back to.the back yard away from lot of sun light because I just seen on others. That said that they do best in low light and kept dry less water. He moved it at my request months ago.(he wasn't happy). Now we will be both happy 😊

Sorry if I’m wrong but did you mean to say facultative CAM and not obligate CAM .If I’m correct facultative means that its optional.

I have one which is spouting new buds I don't think there's perlite in soil but it seems to be growing healthy despite the minimal effort and the odd conversation lol 😆

Oh thanks that’s really kind. They probably enjoy the lack of perlite if you tend to under water them. But if you do choose to repot them back sure to keep the container around that same size or only about an inch larger in diameter.
Any suggestions for cold winter days with very little light. I dare not water them even.@@GardeningInCanada
I have mine in a self watering Lechuza planter. It’s very happy. Gets as much water as it likes and diffused light from a bathroom window. It got very tall. I just divided it. It looks like the one in the thumbnail picture for this video.

So I have read International Sansevieria Society journals and know some of the botanical names if you want to know more about Sansevieria species such as who and where they come from and about their flowers I would recommend visiting their website :) they have researchers who writes the journals :)
