- Restoring a slightly eyesore stock trailer on a budget.
I used menards angle grinder with wire wheel
Graco Magnum x5 airless paint sprayer
Rusty metal primer by rustoleum (3 gallons of primer for inside and out)
Smoke Gray Enamel by rustoleum (4.5 gallons due to two external coats)
Lights are ordered off of Amazon and riveted in place.
total cost of project $332
With a little elbow grease and about 6 afternoons total time the trailer looks much more appealing and now will have many more usable years ahead of it. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
This commentary reminds me of my grandpa transferring old super eights onto VHS with his fancy new camcorder in the late 80s. Him and grandma just giving commentary in real time
Nicely done. I have a 2-horse trailer that I got cheap that needs a little work. Thanks for the video.
Clear, simple, and to-the-point. Love it
Just saw your video for the first time and its given me inspiration to redo my own trailer vs. buy one already done. Will save me couple thousand big ones. Thanks for the straight forward, informative video!
Beautiful work
Great job! I enjoyed the flow of the video and the useful commentary. Trailer looks great!
Nice job 👍 I need to get started on mine
Thank you for putting this together!
awesome!!! so much action and finished product looked great!!
Great job!! Looks nice!
Very nice job. I just bought a rusty Ponderosa very similar to that and want to give it the same treatment. Thanks
Way cool! Looks fantastic
This looks amazing great job ! I will be using the same paint for old trailer because this looks amazing I have a 6 *10

Just about to take this on. Neighbor had a fore and spread to my field. Unfortunately my trailer got in the way. Great video.
Great job!!
Nice job. I’m going to be starting a rebuild soon. Hope it looks as nice as what you have done.
Great job
Nice job
I think you just saved me about $5k. Looks incredible!
Looks good
It’s already been said but great job. You killed it.
Nice job.
Very cool thanks
Thks did in joy it im looking at a stock trailer to make in to a bar!!
Good job
I liked the before you painted it
Nice!
I have to do a major on mine too, repair inside divider and latches and rear door latches and slider and wiring lol
I've also been hitting the inside Enamel after I spray With a dry low mat roller and wear and tear seems to be much better.
I was speaking to a professional sprayer and he said it might be because it breaks the static of the paint out of the sprayer.
Again just throwing it out there
Honestly you're a craftsman and this came out gorgeous I'm just wondering for my own purposes.
We're not worried about inhalation of atomized particles of rust...
I mean I guess if you're not working with it every day no harm no fowl right.
I've been wearing one of those cheapies With the disks and I did notice I was feeling much better.
gorgeous gorgeous job brother much love to you and yours.
I've kind of got addicted to this hobby over the past year and just looking for professional input better, PPE is always appreciated.
Love this vid, what would you suggest for a front seam on the roof of the dog nose of gooseneck? The seam in rusted completely thru about 2 in on either side.
Great job,
Did you use any hardner when painting? Or and thinner mix in the paint?
Good video thanks for putting it up, can you tell me what size air compressor you used with that paint gun?
This is awesome, Eric. Thank you! I just bought a nearly 50 year old Hart horse trailer and I'll be doing the same restoration process starting this spring. Can you tell me the name of that paint gun you used, again?
Looking to do a refurbish myself. Your project looks great. May I ask what you had for cost in the trailer initially? I'm just trying to avoid getting hosed and everything I find needs extensive metal work. I don't mind some and I can weld "some" but im just trying to avoid losing my shirt on what I get into.
I would absolutely pay you to do one for me lol just a small bumper pull ♡
Great video thanks for the ideas!
Eric, what thickness of plexiglass did you use and where did you get it from?
Has the rust come through later on? Do you wish you sprayed it with a neutalizer first?
Did you have to thin your paint? I've got a 14 ft to do shortly. Any help would be appreciated.
Where did you get the trim peices at? I need new ones for mine
Don't have a tripod, camera fell over hahaha. Our life in a sentence.
Did you have to thin the paint at all to use the Graco Magnum?
Did you paint the trailer after the grey rust oleum or that is the actual paint? Looks awesome. I have my old horse trailer in the same condition but afraid to start the project myself not knowing where to start.
what you see is the "smoke grey" from rustoleum
How many gallons of paint did you use?
Wonderful job! We must think some what a like..I will be doing same thing. Juan Bowers family
long lost cousins i suppose
Do you know what that trailer is rated to tow?
Looks great! Why did you primer with grey and then the rusty metal primer?
lol. i could only find 2 gallons of rusty metal at the local hardware stores. so i used grey as well. I'm under the impression the rusty metal is superior quality, however it was not readily available. thanks for the question
Great job! Come and do mine!😂
where are you located??? lol
Good job. How many hours do you think you had in it for paint prep?
About 4 afternoons, maybe 12-15 hours in PREP time. Thanks for the question.
How many hours to paint?
Looks amazing! Do you need to wax oil based paint to keep its finish?
You shouldn't really need to if you've used a sealant. I like Sparthane since it's made for boats its very thick and lasts thru the elements
But if no sealant was applied waxing can help longevity
Picked up a nearly identical big valley trailer today for 800 bucks. Could I get this done in a couple weekends?
absolutely!
Six afternoons..... Translate to 30 hours or so?
What did you put on the bottom at front of trailer?
its an aluminum panel that was already on. i just cleaned it and sprayed it black
Please come do mine ! Flagler Beach Fl . 2004 2 horse bumper pull .
How did you know it was only surface rust versus deeper issues?
You learn to tell by the thickness of the metal vs the depth of the rust and how much the rust looks like it has "eaten" away. It will actually look like a deeper crevice and that it you go over it to sand that you will be able to see to the other side. Now, in some areas that are not of major importances this is not a life or death issue and sometimes epoxy is used to fill rust spots and then sanded to create and nice smooth and even surface to paint. The issue you are looking for is if these rust spots are on major metal pieces such as the frame work of the trailer. If they are many or just one spot that happened to have water sitting or a high water flow area under a tree. If the areas are small and likely wont go through if you go over it with a wire brush or if you are going to need to actually replace metal or do body work on the trailer. One small heavy wear spot here or there that is not on a piece of frame and is so small I can epoxy and sand is something I can deal with. . . . . . . .20 spots I would need to epoxy to have a smooth surface after sanding because the rust is everywhere is a different story and gives me much greater pause to get that trailer a thorough go through as I expect rust in places I don't want to "fix" like the frame and I'm not going to be welding that.
When you see the rust spots you can tell if they look like they have eaten a crater into the metal or if they are just eating the finish off kind of everywhere and it needs a new paint job, but there is plenty of metal left to work with.
@@blackdandelion5549 Thank you so much for taking the time to answer!! That's very helpful😊
How’s the paint holding up over time now
That’s a good question he primed the whole thing so I want to say it is still looking good but if the primer didn’t have rust blocker it might have went through the paint and started chipping would be great if he could give a response
its my parents trailer. i just met them yesterday to go trail riding and i looked the trailer over. it's holding up great. no paint chips, bubbling, or rust coming through yet. I'm pretty pleased. it's still stored outside. they haul horses about twice a month with it.
This is my friends dad
What paint gun/system did you use?
