  • In the early 19th century, the United States was divided on the issue of slavery. In the south, slaves worked on large plantations and were critical to the production of cotton, tobacco and other cash crops. Some Americans advocated the abolishment of slavery. One man decided to take action by taking over Harpers Ferry, a small Virginia town with a major armory. John Brown's raid began on October 16th, 150 years ago. Brown was executed for his actions in December 1859. But even though long ago, his bid to end slavery is still being debated. VOA's Susan Logue reports.

In the Loving memory of JOhn Brown, He's truly an UNSUNG HERO. He fought for what was right and his 5 Glorious sons followed his example. He was a true Rightous man, and his Memory will NEVER BE forgotten. He was a TRUE AMERICAN HERO, like Harriet Tubman. I will add this along with my video's on my favorites. IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN BROWN.

John Brown is not only one of the greatest men in the history of this nation, but in all the history of all of humanity. His spirit will live as long as people who are truly committed to opposing oppression walk this earth. RIP.

If John Brown was a murderer, then so was George Washington. What makes ones rebellion just and the others unjust? In some ways, one could argue that John Brown’s was the higher moral ground. Violence is never the right choice, but when you give people no choice, then violence becomes what seems to work. We should never let it come to that. Instead of using the Bible to rationalize bad behavior, the “christians” of the South should have lived up to the love that a true Christian should show toward another human being.

A true American Freedom Fighter. He definitely had the courage of his convictions even unto death.

Translating the story of John Brown to the Sahasrara Chakra, has a great effect, not only in acknowledging the liberation of the past, but of allowing wisdom to further liberate us each day, sometimes the awakening we feel can be a bit bumpy but eventually they always smooth out, theres no limits to the bliss we can feel if we live in wisdom. I'm so glad I took the time to learn a bit about the chakras, what a great fit.

John Brown was not violent at heart. He had a workable plan for guerrilla warfare with widespread liberation of slaves, minimal killing, and respect for pro-slavery prisoners of war taken. This plan really could have worked if things had not gone wrong and he had gotten out of the town quickly after the raid. He was ready to give his life for this cause. That's a rare trait. Worldwide there is always plenty of oppression to fight, and not for an unjust government in an unjust war.

@timmarshall63 Taking this into account, it is clear that John Brown was merely attempting to finish the war which the Southern colonies had begun the moment they introduced slavery to North America in 1619. In order to accuse John Brown of being a cold-blooded murderer, you must also accuse every human being who was ever willing to fight and die for human liberty as well.

John Brown's raid was properly called "Insane" by Northern Leaders, but admirable. It became very apparent that policy would never unite the country, it was going to take what we do best: shedding blood. I don't agree with the way he did it, but nevertheless it got the South's attention.
