Martin and Sonia travel to Bognor Regis to inform Pauline of Mark's death. Very sad scenes with great acting (esp. considering James Alexandrou, AKA Martin, was only 18 here).

I relate to the part where Pauline says that she would jump each time the phone rang thinking it would be "the call". I went through the same thing for two years when my uncle was dying of cancer. In the end I was asleep when the call came, but it was devastating nonetheless.

They should never have recast Martin after James Alexandrou stopped playing him. Martin and Sonia had the perfect romantic exit together in a taxi in 2007, which is now tainted because Natalie Cassidy returned and so the writers broke them up off screen. Martin makes no sense with Stacey Slater; he always belonged with Sonia.

@Euro-African: In the beginning, Mark was a teenage brat too and into trouble and glue sniffing and stuff. The actor playing him though [David Scarborough ] committed suicide in 1986 by jumping off Beachy Head and his character was re-cast using Todd Carty, who had previously been known as Tucker Jenkins in the BBC Children's series, Grange Hill. He made his debut in 1987 and became part of the soaps first storyline involving HIV and AIDS which was controversial at the time, also, Mark being straight as well and contracting it from his girlfriend [ whom became his first wife], Jill [ she died from lesions on her brain and subsequent seizures arising from the condition a day after their marriage]put the disease on the map and the soap also addressed the prejudices and ignorance and the fears surrounding it. Mark was on retro-virals until 2003 when he told his mum that the medication was no longer working and that he knew he was going to die. He drove off out of the square and this story finished his character off in 2004, Michelle named her son she had had by Grant after him.
Mark matured because he had too, saddled with a "death sentence" changed him, Martin just grew up and yes I like how James Bye is playing him.

The new Martin (James Bye) is boring. Also, Martin and Stacey make no sense together. James Alexandrou had the more challenging task of playing Martin as a teenager and young adult. He did a great job and had fantastic chemistry with Natalie Cassidy. He was part of the greatest EastEnders era.

Wendy Richard played Pauline fantastically but this scene never grabbed me much, it wasn’t well done, the Pauline that most people knew would of been in bits, even though she knew Mark would one day die young. It wasn’t put together well, but I imagine this was down to the producers of the show which ruin soaps

    • @shaunwakefield9793

I think this is played ok tbh, as Pauline had kept Mark's HiV away from Martin knowing, the way she's says no mother expects their child to die before them. Heartbreaking.
