what's most impressive about this is how everything works 23 years later
but, that's toyota for you
A Japanese toyota
Babar Iqbal don't underestimate the American Toyotas like the Tundra, Tacoma, Camry, etc. Almost all Toyota's are incredibly reliable.
Loomi except the ones made in Kentucky with engine, fuel pump, and transmission recalls. Japanese Toyotas are the best
ArthropodSpidey I used to have a Kentucky-made 2001 Camry with the 2.2L. Only issues I had was a slightly leaky valve cover gasket & speakers going out.
Loomi only huh? Some Toyota’s don’t even have that
That engine is probably the most reliable v12 in the world
Fun fact. The V12 engine ran 2 separate ECU’s. One for the front 6 cylinders and one for the back. With double of every sensor as a redundancy so the car could still run on 6 cylinders in an emergency
I mean yeah, you can do that, but it is japanese, so nobody really cares...
@@maltazor666 it will still run even after a frontal crash with a single ecu lmao
More likely one ECU per cylinder bank. Which was the usual approach of V12 engines back then.

Even though this is sub-par luxury by today standards I still can't help getting impressed because of the fact that this is a Toyota and things won't break at any minute.
the tech and ride quality (today's cars have air suspension, this doesn't) may not be on par with today's cars, but the materials and build quality far ourclasses any of today's bently or S class, and on par, if not even better than rolls royce. For a car that was introduced in the 90s to have this level of comfort and refinenent without an air suspension is extremely impressive. Imagine if toyota made a modernized version of this car right now, it will outclass the phantom in every way.

He deliberately doesn't like to hype Japanese cars. That was so obvious and he probably knew people will notice he didn't comment on that but he didn't care. Typical of him.
I think you forgot (or didn't know about these) two quirks:
1. It has a button on the front dashboard to open and close the rear-window lace curtains.
2. There is a magnet in the steering-wheel column close to the keyhole. That is so that your keys will be held by the magnet and don't rattle around making a noise.

And the reason for him to turn heated seat is: the foot of passenger smells like stinky cheese sandwich
Actually no, the two buttons are for the driver and the rear seats; not the passenger seat.
It's for the REAR seat heating, so that the driver can have rear seats warmed before the passengers enter the vehicle.
This is one of the most thoughtfully designed luxury sedans ever.
The best part about this car is everything still works perfectly. Unlike an older bmw or benz

Hello Doug!
Your next mission, should you choose to accept it, is to track down the similarly rare and unusual Nissan President. Followed by another limousine from Toyota, the strangely named Crown Majesta. Both are pretty rare even in their native Japan, and finding examples of either outside Japan will test your detective skills seriously. :)
Oh, and another Japanese limo you can have fun tracking down is the Mitsubishi Dignity. Yes, it's actually called that. It's Mitsubishi's attempt to build a Japanese S-Class with extra fruit. Just below it in the model range is another limo, the Proudia (Mitsubishi have a track record of devising weird names for their cars).
I suspect they'll all provide you with quirks and features overload if you ever find any to review. :D

The mirrors on older (pre 1970?) cars had to have the side mirrors visible within the swept area of the wipers.
Makes sense and even more when you realize that your focus can remain on the road while checking the sides and with wider angles.

This, right there, is my dream car.
In dark blue, or should I say 'lake Mashū' blue - a color named after the clearest lake in the world.
Black is by far the most common, but there's also metallic grey (two actually: one lighter and one darker) and metallic blue (same, one lighter, one darker).
The wool has several advantages over leather: it doesn't squeak, it's warmer in winter and cooler in summer (which also helps with perspiration).
There is a leather 'option' but it's actually less luxurious, and intended for livery/limousine service - it's easier to clean, therefore more convenient, but certainly not more luxurious.
The V12 was indeed intended to be smooth and quiet, hence the relatively low power output - but, hey, this is definitely not a sports car. :)
That engine is sick, though, and offer close 500 Nm of torque, with as much as 400 Nm available very low (1,200 RPM).
Also worth noting: while the exterior of the car only has "Century" branding (not a single reference to Toyota), there's actually a few place *inside the car* where Toyota is mentioned (eg. the head unit).
The Gothic script also carries a "high end" significance in Japan. Seiko also uses a Gothic script for their top of the line Grand Seiko brand.
I feel like a total dignitary driving my Toyota Century around Virginia. It takes me 15 minutes just to get gas because people are always stopping to talk to me about how and where I got it. Good stuff.
Asia has most of its fine grade wool supplied by New Zealand or Australia. My friend owns a V8 century that’s has a wool interior with a label that says “wool from New Zealand”.
You got my attention: it's the first time I read that wool actually keeps us cool in summer! I only assumed that wool makes us perspire more because it's warmer than cotton in winter, so it definitely would be much warmer than cotton in summer too!
do you like the new generation (the 3rd) or this one? I think the new is way better
@@rayboccino5174 Yes. Everything you said about wool is correct. I rather the leather version as the wool retains so much dust.
That tiny central sun visor is such a good idea. I have often wondered why these as far as i was concerned were not made as the sun always seems to be in that crack between the two visors. I have driven a lot of different cars of different manufacturers etc and not once come across one and pondered why they are not made. Your comment regarding this Doug made a reference that a few other cars come with them. Maybe it's just a States thing? Anyway now at least i know they do exist. I would have thought after market car shops would have stocked them but i haven't seen them.
Yeah, it looks like something the Yakuza would roll in.
Usually this was given from Toyota and selected few that can buy it
Fun fact: It's considered intrusive to glance back at passengers, so a lot of Japanese taxis have fender mirrors to work around that.

@@ahsan.v8 After a series of traffic accidents in high performance cars, Japanese car manufacturers agreed to "limit" horsepower in their cars to 276 so the government wouldn't regulate power ratings. I live in Japan so I can give you some interesting insights on those front hood mirrors. Since the century is a car that is 99% driven by chauffeurs, that is probably the reason for the front mirrors, as they are standard on all Japanese taxis (they are preferred because they are easier to see without turning your head and hide the blindspots better like you said). Even to this day, those hood mirrors are standard on brand new Japanese taxis, and there was actually a big backlash on the newest taxi model, the Toyota JPN TAXI (another unique JDM car) because toyota thought it would be uneccessary to add those mirrors, but drivers were so passionate about them that Toyota relented and made them standard.
Think in many other countries it might be illegal to put the side mirrors on the front hood/bonnet/wing/fender though as they would cause more injury in a frontal pedestrian collision
I just came across what looked like an early 80s Century. Man it was beautiful.

For those who don’t know, Japan classifies cars by how wide they are, from mirror to mirror. The wider the car, the more you have to pay to own it. So most manufacturers would put their mirrors on the fenders instead of the doors to keep the car as narrow as possible.
The idea of a V12 in a Japanese car blows my mind, as another thing they tax is the engine size, which is why you find 4 cylinder cars to be so common in Japan. Curiously, cars with a displacement below a certain amount can be driven by people under 18, which is the age required to get a driver’s license. It’s very complicated, and I can see why most people just take public transportation instead.
If you want to know why, it’s because Japan is nothing but a collection of small islands, yet houses as many people as most countries twice its size. At one point, Japan was encapsulated by a dome of smog, kind of like LA was in the 70s.
i always thought the fender mirror thing was because of a law in japan that required mirrors on the fenders that didn't get -abolished- relaxed till 1983 to allow for mirrors on the doors as well
Don't be surprised by a japanese v12, this car was made for the imperial fleet and important government officials, not for regular people

It's definitely the kind of car a head of state or CEO would want to be seen in. It has the presence of a nice car and definitely confers the status of the person inside without trying to show off. That Lexus RS he showed and new BMWs look downright vulgar in comparison. Unfortunately we live in a social media world now and a car like that won't generate enough likes to make it worth spending the money on.
14:03 One funny thing is that the front passenger seat is in the same climate control zone as the rear passengers.
14:24 The head unit has got Navigation, a phone book, TV, a calendar, and a world clock.
15:08 One of the owners manuals is a dedicated back seat manual
Thanks. Very interesting. Toyota has some great JDM models. This is one of them and certainly the ultimate. I check a Japanese auction once in a while to see if a nice Century is available. But you can just buy one anytime...:)
Thank you very much for the information 😉😉
Doug’s the type of guy who brings a glass jar to a party for everyone to put their keys in so no one drives home drunk
Hey Doug, love your shows.
Amazing how every switch and feature is still working on this car
13:27 Omfg that optical illusion. I actually thought the whole center console can be moved forward/backward 🤣
you aren't the only one
5:19 I’m really surprised nobody else noticed Doug had two different socks on. He’s evolved from two shirts.
He's young, his wife is young, they don't have children... Probably only do laundry when one of them can only find one clean sock. Maybe this was the day BEFORE laundry day, lol.
Wealthy people can be slobs, too.
I'm just laughing at the fact that you can put your feet thru the seat 😩😂😂😂😂

Yes but he has another pair of these at home..😉
Doug is creating s whole new generation of enthusiasts😂
Love all your videos Doug however you know all Japanese vehicles of that era were gentlenans agreement 276hp and it probably has more, worth a mention. Also the mirrors position is to stop wind noise which as you know is heard on most b pillar cars and yes you get the wider view. Thankyou!
10:08 Doug that's where the Yakuza japenese Mob guys would put a pistol or small arms

I'm a simple man. I see Doug post "1 minute ago" I click.

As a truck driver I’m very used to fender mounted mirrors. They are absolutely the best place for a mirror to be mounted. Whenever I drive something other than the truck, I alway wish I had those extra mirrors.
Love the Century. They are pretty cool and you don't see a lot in North America. Also love the uniqueness of them.
I'm pretty sure some random Yakuza boss sent hitmen after Doug the second he called it the "Majestic Chicken".
funfact: most japanese don't like leather seats
Neither do I.
Same goes for us pakistanis
I personally don't understand why people love leather seats so much. They're colder in the winter, hotter in the summer, and prone to crack over time if you don't maintain them as well. And cloth feels nicer against your skin. The only advantage I see is leather seats are easy to clean.
Ethan Manley It just feels more luxurious, more shiny with reflected light, and most types of higher-quality leather smell great. This is an opinion, though, and everyone has their own opinion.
Ethan Manley on some older cars theirs some pretty comfortable leather seats. All the new leather seats are so stiff that it feels like your sitting on a brick
Doug, my 1970 Pontiac LeMans Sport had silent windshield wipers like that 😁 I got a parking ticket in Sweden once, and the person didn't notice the wipers, and so rolled the ticket and put it into a door handle
That tv remote reminds me of the zenith one we had back in the 90's for our free cable hot box that got every channel even pay per view....my father owned a bar and alot of his customers did favors for us....lol
When is Doug going to review a real Toyota?
And by real I mean the 1994 Toyota Celica.
Dean Caine the Scotty Kilmer edition!
Might get on the good side of Scotty lol
After real Toyota can we also get last gen Celica? Anyway just waiting for another Doug's video about car from 90s

Overall a very interesting video, thanks!
The control button for the rear seat heater on the driver side panel is for the driver to pre heat the seat before their boss or leader gets into the car so that way they don’t have to sent on a cold seat when they came into the car during winter

Doug: I call it "The Majestic Chicken".
Toyota Boss: disliked Dougs video, because it not a majestic chicken! It's the Hō'ō.
Doug's calls it like that because he has chicken legs
Wait so the Pokemon Ho-Oh is directly based on that? No wonder it looked familiar!

You can be sure some important Toyota people were not pleased by this review.
In Sweden, the Volvo 850 was launched in 1991, for the 1992 model year, and they introduced side airbags in 1995 :) I know the 850 was launched later in the Us :)
That mini sunvisor above the mirror is really common on Japanese cars from the 90s and early 2000s. My 2002 wrx Impreza has one
