this is a contradiction to when Dana said he "hadn't known until it happened" or whatever he was trying to sway the media into believing. He put colby as the back up because it makes the most sense from a business stand point to potentially give colby a shot at the title.

So Colby leveraged himself to title fight by settling the lawsuit he filed against Masvidal. He must have taken a big cash compensation from Jorge and Dana must have promised him a title fight if he settles the lawsuit and moves on.
I can say this because of multiple reasons
1. Both Colby and Masvidal are taking up fights, that means the lawsuit is over.
2. Had Masvidal been proven guilty , his career was over and would've been jailed. Instead he's fighting Gilbert Burns.
3. Colby on the other hand wouldn't have taken any fight till the lawsuit is in progress because he was claiming that sucker-punch by Masvidal caused him brain damage and he can no longer fight because of Concussion. But instead he's made weight as back up and is now next in line.
4. Dana White made him the backup fighter so that he can justify to media and mma fans the reason to give him title shot. Just like Volkanoski was backup for Oliviera vs Islam.
