Goodman Heat Pump with HORRIBLE Duct System & How I FIXED It!!

- The customer recently bought this home with new Goodman heat pump split unit HVAC equipment and they were experiencing high humidity levels on the second floor. They called out another company and the tech added refrigerant hoping that would fix the issue. After realizing that didn't work, they called me out for a second opinion. First thing I did was hook up all my @FieldpieceProducts wireless probes with the @measureQuick app to get a full system diagnosis. I found the system running with little to no superheat and a low temperature drop (checking temps at the grilles in the space). I then hopped in the attic to inspect the air handler and duct system. Found the problem!! This duct system was hanging on by a thread. No screws, hardly any tape, several major gaps, etc! This unit was pulling in a lot of attic air! It is time for a little overhaul on this duct system. In this video I show my process on repairing the ductwork and removing refrigerant to get the system running right, hope you enjoy. LET'S DO SOME WORK!!

Hey Guys! Go check out hvactactical.com and use promo code "QUALITYHVAC" to save 10%.
Just got my first shirt from this last week.
hey, i noticed your plenums are both insulated inside. Are they made for both supply or return? just thinking mold could grow on supply insulation.
Holy cow! That air is going to take the path of least resistance. I'm a commercial HVAC tech at a Community College and I can believe a contractor would do that horrible work. I have to watch our contractors like a hawk. I literally stand over them to make sure they do the work correctly. As a former school teacher I appreciate the finger wag.
Great video and a huge improvement to the system I am sure !! Directing, editing, and production.... you may have missed your calling ......I envy those skills !! Thanks for sharing !!
I watch your videos too Anti DIY!
“Let’s do some work” is literally the best mindset to start the day! I love that vibe!!!
I agree!
He's A Bad Cat!!!
Hardly a word was spoken during this video yet it said so much! Awesome video!
I'm a Mechanical Designer, lotta years of commercial and industrial HVAC design under me. It has taken me a long time to accept the "standards" of residential HVAC work, especially all the flex used for duct systems, but I understand the use of it. I've always had a commercial contractor do my HVAC work and had sheet metal ductwork used in the houses I've built. With that said, you do some fine work that I take no exception to. Your workmanship, attention to detail, thoroughness and technical skills are outstanding. I've been watching residential HVAC videos for a couple of months and the quality of installations out there is downright sickening. It's a shame people put more focus and money into the quality of their kitchen countertops and finish of a toilet paper holder than the heating and cooling system of their home. Don't tell me they can't get educated on the subject, they know all about sound systems and wireless networks.... Keep up the good work. I enjoy watching your channel, Anti-DIY and Comfort Plus. All three of you do great work.
I don’t even work on residential hvac and I know that looks wrong. Good job fixing it. You’ve made a name for yourself people trust and it shows.
Thank you so much for the last part of the video!! I was trying to hard to squint and pause the video to see the pressure and temps. You really do go the extra mile! Great job, you make us and the entire industry proud!!
Good to see someone take pride in their work. Hard to find these days.
Awesome work! Just began HVAC classes here in Iowa and came across your videos recently. I love to watch them because I’m able to learn from them and really see what the HVAC career is all about.
This is a great video! I am currently enrolled in school for HVAC and we just reviewed installation. This gave a great perspective on the consequences of poor duct work. And the process of re-installing ducting. Thanks for the resourceful video.
Zach, I amazed of how you are able to get all your work done and still film. Many folks blame the manufacturer when in fact the quality of installation to blame.
Hey man, just started helping out with installs with a local company and your vids have been really helpful as a learning resource, thank you!
Finally a HVAC Guy fixing install first then addressing other issues. AirFlow is everything to a HVAC System. Checking AirFlow is critical before addressing Refrigerant!!
Quality HVAC. I like to watch this guys videos. Always professional. Keep up the good work
Thx Gilbert, glad you like them!
@@QualityHVACR how much would you charge for that job?
You’re living the American Dream. Great job!
It's good to see you take pride in your work I'm in the Nashville area and got screwed over by ARS Wish I had known about you Sooner keep up the good work
For a minute I was like where's the duct seal ! 😂😂 But you got it. Cool job 👍. I'm a HVAC installer myself going to 5 YEARS. Best job ever.
Good job mate. Your customers are lucky to have you.
Looks good. One thing we do is mastic the colors on the inside so it keeps the mastic off the flex. Crazy how much space the top of that coil takes up.
Nothing wrong with flex IF it is installed correctly. Not using galv elbows at the drops and keeping the flex as taut as possible and properly suspended will increase the static pressure dramatically. I taught ducting for several years and that is one of the most understood and overlooked areas of the hvac industry.
No one in the game doing it better than you! Always love watching!
Thx man! I really appreciate that.
I wish I could find a good reliable person like you here in Texas!
I can see you will be a very busy man in your life time! Keep up the great work!
Another great video Zac. How funny. I just did a job similar to this one where I cad to replace wrong size supply plenum which had all sorts of air gaps. Some people do terrible jobs out there because they don't know what they are doing.
Fantastic work! I just picked up all the same field piece tools over the summer, really makes a difference
Nice! Yes I love the wireless setup, having all the info in one place in real time is awesome.
4:32 Nice! I always thought just connect straight to the connection, adding that splice connection is nice and clean touch. Thanks.
Great job man. You’re definitely staying true to your company name!
Quality work, this is the way ductwork should be done. Adding mastic was key as well to get those air gaps sealed tight and keep that insulation from sliding back off the collar over time. My man knows his stuff.
22 years in in HVAC business in Chicago-land. God job , you did improve this bad install for sure. The run coming of the top looks like have a hard bend. Allays add an hard sheet metal elbow regardless on return and supply duct when you have a hard bend. Flexible ducts are used for straight run nor for sharp bend. Flexible duct cases turbulence and slows down air pressure. I rarely use flexible duct, only in rear occasions . Positive thing about flexible duct is less time consumption.
Omg you made a van to go after the coil box??????? Nicely done. You should come and teach every single HVAC tech in California how to do that.
Every single retro fit I’ve done in this state has been crammed in there
Quality and professional work every time! great job keep'em coming
Thank you!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Started hvacr school here in PA! I’m excited to finish & get into the trades! Thanks for the content!
Tip. Don’t be mediocre. Make it a goal to be bad ass. Read and review and visualize. The truth will sell itself.
How's it going so far? Is it complicated? Interested in getting into HVAC
Wish you were located where I live, love the Attention to detail.
Alot of hacks out there. Thank you for sharing the right way if doing your trade!
Great professional work!
Great job as always. Keep up the good work.
You make the job look easy and fun 👍🏽
Good call
Great video! Quality workmanship. Most importantly nail the root causes. Thumb upz
Your work is a joy to watch. But that attic job. The cameraman deserves a few extra beers
whoever installed this 1st time should have their HVAC license revoked......OMG... Great job on fixing it !!!
Keep the good work coin ZD bless.
Sometimes you just gotta do the dirty work no one else wants to do, good job and great video.
The run coming of the top seem to have a hard bend. Could that have been avoided with an elbow? I couldn’t quiet see if you address an elbow. Great videos man!!! By far one of the top HVAC channels on CZcams.
Agree. Good observation. Doing the right thing isn’t hard. All you need is a sense of pride in yourself. This guy is a badass tech. And quality what he’s producing.
I was thinking that he was going to put an elbow in there too.
He also crisscrossed two of the duct lines (see 5:20). It looks like it was because the two outlets that shared a side of the box (3:56) were different sizes and he got them backwards.
The fact he got the ones with dampers in them as well really gets under my skin. You do not need those things, they always cause problems.
El mejor en hvac en youtube, te felicito por exelente trabajo como tecnico HVAC y calidad de videos. No te detengas por favor.
Bien dicho Daniel. Ay muchos pendejos que les vale madre la calidad de su trabajo.
Dude, you have the coolest music with your vids. Great lessons also.
nice video, like that no,no,no waving finger. Thanks for posting
excellent video, in short quality and desire to do things right!
Wow some people do not take pride in work. Awesome job fixing it right
Good job way better then what they had
Nice video bud! Professional documentary status
good vid. Thanks. Wish you were in DFW.
That was some beautiful work brother!
I think I saw the evap coil smile as you took that plenum off 😆
You are a very good A/c Tech.
Look like a DIY job by Mr handyman...the initial, not after...lol
One can make a job just going back and fixing issues like in this video. We fixed a 1/2" tapered down to 0" hole that was about 20 inches long. It was at the beginning of the supply duct. It had been pumping our air outside for 10 years or so. All the guy had to do was hold it up when he screwed it to the unit. Also, no tape or mastic either. The outcome is we now have more air coming out of the ducts than before.
Great job! 👏👏👏
Definitely better than what was originally there, but that run out of the top of the supply plenum was choked really bad. Flex isn’t meant to turn that tight. Should have put an elbow on the collar or if there wasn’t enough height to do that, should’ve dovetailed the elbow in put it directly in the plenum without a collar.
Great job bro!
Hey Zach. One of my employees introduced me to one of your videos, about a package unit dolly. I’d love to have one. But wanted to say. Your videos are a nice compliment to my instruction. Keep up the videos
He sells the dollies. In Another video he says to contact him by email if you want one. His email is in the in formation/ description section for the video.
Search for his video “ When things go wrong”. That is the one where he talks about selling the dollies and it has his email address.
Sloppy installations like that just makes me a bit nauseous and mad. I'm a bit addicted to videos showing bad workmanship. Thanks for the fix!
Agree. I can’t stand mediocre techs/installers/people. Be the best you can be. Do the right thing. Be proud of the product of your labor.
Nice work as always
solid work as per usual! you are the man.
Much appreciated!
Great work and video 💪
Awesome work
Great job and video like always
Is that the Veto pro pac MCT? Nice QUALITY video and work!
Holy cow, what a gap on that return plenum. of course they had humidity issues. They were sucking in a ton of attic air.
Great job
Great video! Question, why not add a 90 to the duct on top of the supply plenum to reduce kinking?
Cant wait for the next video!
Great! Another lesson learned
Great job!
Looks great
nice job done the right way
One pro to another awesome job man no excuse to do shoty work like was there to start with.
Looks like the same exact custom boxes we pick up
Finally found a couple of vids to help me with my problem. This one and your one on building a plenum. I got dealt a crappy hand with my house and have old lazy 10 inch ductwork with asbestos, and dents in it from each time someone bumped their head into it over the years. Nobody will touch it until that assbestos is gone. So I was freaking out a bit but then I remembered my old Navy training and it all came back to me. Turns out I just need to gut everything, including the boots, and replace with a new plenum so I can cut a new take off for the new ducts. I was just wondering if you had a way to ballpark what size I can get away with. I have 5 vents and 2 intakes. Want to see if I can get away with running 6 inch round from the takeoff. Was going to go maybe a 12" to 6" tee for the take off and run that maybe 20 feet one side of the tee, and directly above for the other side of the tee. Figured air might be like networking or water where you need twice the flow to supply 2 outlets with the desired flow. If it were 3 outlets, would have to do 3 times, so 18". etc.
Good video brother👍
Great video buddy.
Excellent!
This is an awesome video. Almost like a movie 🎥 🤣😂
Do you ever do videos where you show how you troubleshoot issues with systems? I’m in a trade school for HVAC and only 2 months in to a 10 month training. Would love to see some videos of how to troubleshoot issues like this or even ones about the electrical components as well.
I haven’t yet, but I will.
Nice repair 😷💯 👍
Great video. I know you know this… but a hard pipe elbow would do wonders for that top duct… 😎👍🏼👍🏼
Nice bro, I have the exact job coming up also
Great videos but do you think you can explain how to charge a unit it heat mode! And or what a normal service call looks like in the winter?
Great video. When taking the suction line temp that far from the evap, you still looking for 10 / 15 or looking for a few more?
skip to the future...customer calls and still to humid or they say not working well according to them...now another trip out when busy ofc and you find same thing or maybe something else stupid happened. customer never knows all the proper work you did and now you wish you charged more. now you wish you had skipped that job that took all day long and caused you to be sore the next day from all that labor. you wake some days after saying I will never do that again or I will send installers out instead and just check there work...sweat free and not itchy, cut and bruised next time. work smart not hard boys! move on to quotes and easier stuff...send installers instead and save your body from a pounding. This guy is very good at what he does. I am a fan and he does awesome work.
Great video
I always enjoy your videos! May I ask what your camera and editing setup is? Thanks in advance!
You gotta be kidding me. I can't believe those gaps. Still, knowledge vs experience huh!
Nice work, most HVAC guys spend too much time dissing the original install because they think they're doing gods work. If there weren't these crap installs there would be less work for us so I appreciate the incompetent contractors.
I watch your videos and your the best I do hvac for living but I do more residential installations if only the company I work for would supply us with more tools 🛠 but I buy all mine and the one you have are high tech tools
Nice job with the fix. I am curious what the part number or name of the plug you put in the hole is. Thanks for posting.
Speechless!
Hello Zack, newbie here always learning with your videos. I saw you use the fieldpiece static pressure probes. Would you recommend those over the sdmn6 or sdmn5 for static pressure? Thanks in advance.
Great HVAC tech, by the book
