Bars & Barbells, how most people discover Band Maid First:
-There is that recommendation for Band Maid again. Those girls in the thumbnail look cute.... I guess I'll click it but the music probably sucks.
-10 seconds later - Are they wearing maid outfits? Holy shit, listen to this music! What is going on!? First video ends - That was so good. What else is there?
-1 hour later - I watched all the official videos. Is there more? searches and finds the unofficial live videos
-Five hours later - This is one of the best bands I've ever heard. I need more. starts watching interviews and cute moments videos.
-Ten hours later: Buying all the albums and live Blurays
-4 months later - fanboying at the first Band Maid concert available to go to
    That´s it, Congrats from Brazil.

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 57 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to soft ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot.
They are aged from 29 to 32. Currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with all the original members.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. It's a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see is NOT what you get. They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

You need to make a little thank you shrine to Frank, he's given you the starting opportunity to have one of the most joyous and fulfilling musical journeys going - BAND -MAID. This band is the real deal and they have earned their rock and roll stripes over the last decade as one of, if not the most hard working, professional, creative and talented musical units in the rock universe. They slide through genres and their catalogue has more powerhouse hits than a young Mike Tyson and more hooks than a harbour full of fishing boats, yet this band has none of the BS arrogance and sense of entitlement common in other performers. They truly are grateful and humble to their fanbase. Welcome to the healthiest and happiest addiction on Earth, if there's one thing better for this old Aussie drummer than a cold beer on a hot day it's BAND -MAID everyday. Regarding their age: the entire group is inside of a range within a couple or three years either side of thirty right now. Some of their CZcams content is from awhile back, they have been very busy this year doing tenth anniversary touring, including two separate visits to the US.
If you're interested in trying another from them, might I suggest the music videos for their songs Warning or Sense.
However, they step everything up a couple of levels in kind of a feedback loop when performing in front of a live audience. It's pretty much mandatory to recommend their official live video of Domination at this point.

    • @daaaaaave
      @daaaaaave Před 10 měsíci +4

Official lives of Domination, Play and Freedom are all really great for getting a feel for them as live performers. Like, how tight they play live, how they interact with each other, how they interact with the audience, and just the joy they exude while performing for fans. Saiki, lead vocal, also just generally sounds better live. They sanitize her too much in the studio on a lot of tracks, and I feel like she just tries harder for a live audience that's feeding her energy. It's night and day on the Domination MV vs Domination live.

Maidiacs Incoming! We have new friends! 🎉
The “slow reveal” of their faces and instruments is purposeful here. “Blooming” 👍🏽
The Maids are all over 30; with a 10 year back catalog of over 120 songs.
Pro-tip: please consider ignoring lyrics at first. Treat Saiki’s vocals as another instrument and hear the melodic choices. Lyrical meaning can wait.
Yes, Band Maid music is layered and progressive, their creativity knows no bounds. Be patient with your ears; it often takes multiple listens to hear what’s going on.
Band Maid is not a formula artist. They are the anti-AC/DC; no songs sound the same. I call them Hard Rock Fusion.
As the foremost expert on Band Maid musical guidance in this hemisphere (in my opinion 😊), here are some ideas for song #2:
(I felt this song was a little more than you were ready to take in; it was the same for me)
You like straightforward hard rock? “DICE,” official music video
You prefer more arena rock/pop sensibilities? “Domination,” official live video (Band Maid is a LIVE artist…they have an extra gear on stages)
Feeling proggy? More metal, perhaps? “From Now On,” official music video; instrumental track
How about big, loud, melodic, live on stage dynamic power? (Closed captioned English lyrics) “Puzzle,” official live video
Welcome to the pigeonhole, friends! 🤘🏽 ❤

Based on Japans Maid Cafe workers. They have been a band for ten years and started when they were early twenties and the singer was in her late teens. So now they are thirties and late twenties for the singer. Costumes have varied over the years but as they have had more control of the way they look and now write the music and lyrics that has set them apart from many rock bands. The music varies and they write theme music for many anime's and appeared in Netflix film Kate. They have also appeared in anime form themselves in a music video. Always worth checking out.

their catalog spans 10 years' worth of hard work and collective genius, and still counting. as for their specific genre, it's mainly hard rock with pop and thrash/metal/punk/prog/jazz elements infused in their material. they've been a beacon to many western rock music fans who have longed for stuff that got lost in the era of tiktok and overly saturated pop/rn'b/auto-tune trends.
the maid outfit aesthetic is the idea of the band's founder, miku, the one sharing the mic duties whilst playing. she used to work in a maid cafe [which is a subculture in urban japan] before deciding to get into music -- or music with contrasting presentations, to be precise -- hence the use of 'cutesy' or visually interesting appearance juxtaposed with hard and very organic instruments.
as for their age, they're in their 30s except for the vocalist who's youngest in her late 20s, i think.
if you appreciate what you saw in the music video, you'll be more likely elated to see them live. they have just finished their us tour a month ago, highlighted by their lollapalooza gig which was one of their best performances thus far.
again, welcome to the pigeon hole.

If you are new to the Japanese rock scene, you will notice that "There's a lot going on." can be a typical reaction. "Blooming" was from Band-Maid's 2019 'Conqueror" Album. Band-Maid was formed in 2013 when the age of the members averaged around 20, their vocalist Saiki Atsumi was youngest at 18, only just moved to Tokyo and their drummer, Akane Hirose was the eldest at 21. So they were in their mid twenties when the video was shot.
It can be difficult to pigeon hole Band-Maid's genre as they tend to blend and cross a wide variety of genre. I categorize them as "Prog-Pop-Punk-Metal" noting that you'll hear a few smidgins of Jazz, Rap, Japanese Enka, and Broadway show tunes mixed in. The members of Band-Maid are prodigious songwriters. Lead composer and guitar Kanami Tono collaborates with bassist Misa and drummer Akane write the score while rhythm guitar/vocalist Miku Kobato and Saiki write the lyrics. Most of their songs are hard fast rockers, and they are excellent at it, but they also write excellent medium tempo songs. They can be very adventurous: watch "Chose Me", "Giovanni", "Secret Maiko Lips", "From Now On", "Puzzle" live at Tokyo Garden Theater, "Wonderland", "Domination" live, or "Onset". Then watch "About Us". The Maid's have a HUGE catalog of excellent songs and I tell everyone to navigate to their CZcams page and just start listening to songs at random: they're all good.
Band-Maid is currently in the last stages of their Tenth Anniversary Tour that will end on November 27th at Yokohama Arena this year. This will be their first big arena solo concert. I encourage you to see them live if at all possible, they are talented musicians whose live performances are amazingly good. I saw them live twice this Spring. Most fans will tell you that their "Official Live" videos are better recordings than their albums or regular music videos. They played an hour long daytime set at Lollapalooza 2023 that set the stage on fire. You'll see their faces and their beautiful costumes. Watch "Dice - Hate?" that includes a memorable guitar-bass battle.

This video is from a few years ago. If you go back to their first MV, "Thrill", that was made way back in 2014. They are wearing V1 of the maid costumes, which are much more like standard Japanese Maid Cafe outfits, and were all pretty similar. Since then each has cultivated their own style. Bassist MISA didn't like the maid outfits so she now prowls the stage in all black and bare feet. Lead singer Saiki now looks like a hostess in a goth club. Band founder Miku looks like a maid in an anime. Drummer Akane wanted more freedom of movement so her maid costume has short pants instead of a dress. Lead guitarist Kanami hasn't changed all that much.
Their most recent MV is "Shambles" from this year. But they have put out a ton of music and you need to know that they are a killer live act! Tons of live stuff floating around on CZcams and elsewhere!

And a thing about the maid outfits, B & B: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

Band-maid is something rarely found in the current U.S. music industry, a hybrid-fusion band. I'd say the best way to describe them would be a progressive hard rock band with punk, pop, alternative, metal and blues elements in their music. They've created a huge catalog of music over the last decade with something for everyone in there. Once you find the song that grabs you there's no way not to be a fan.
If you're looking for something softer Daydreaming will grab you, something bluesy - Manners is the song, amazing live performances - Freedom or Domination from 2018 (found on the official CZcams page, pure power - Warning or Different for something entirely different you may want to check out When the Dragon Cries which is entirely sung in English so there are no subtitles to deal with. Those are just a few examples ... everyone will suggest other songs due to us each having different connections with different songs. The good part is none of the suggestions will ever be wrong because the band always gives their all whether in the studio, live or just fooling around on their own CZcams channel.

It's partly in English, it can be difficult. They consider themselves to be Hard Rock, though this is more Power Pop with some Pop Punk elements. But they do it all! Edit: good point on the "blooming" aspect, never thought of that before. Nice.

Best band this century. Don't worry about chasing the lyrics on first listen. I would call this late 90's/early 00's alt, but they're easily among the most diverse in sound, so there's elements of punk. They have a unique song for every combination of rock, punk, pop, and metal you can come up with. I would highly suggest Domination *LIVE.* It's in a whole other rock subgenre but it shows what they're capable of on stage.

Band-Maid have been around ten years, they are in their late twenties (lead singer, bassist) and early thirties (drummer, guitarists). If you want an all-English song by Band-Maid, try "The Dragon Cries", which was produced by Tony Visconti (who worked with performers like David Bowie). Usually you can see their faces. They are great on stage. Watch "Domination" (live, not the music video) for a great stage performance that is quintessential Band-Maid, and has a catchy chorus. For instrumental skills watch "From Now On". Recent song "Shambles" was commissioned for anime, as were a few others (e.g. "Sense"). For something different: Sayonakidori (no maid uniform!) and "Gion-Cho" (dressed as apprentice geisha, or "maiko"). For a contrast of styles, try "Manners/Black Hole" -- "Manners" is funky, "Black Hole" is their most chaotic and fastest song. The lead guitarist writes the music. The rhythm guitarist -- who founded the band -- writes the lyrics and does backup vocals. The bassist and drummer write their parts after seeing the lead guitarist's first draft. The lead vocalist helps with the lyrics and acts as quality control. The rhythm guitarist used to work in a "maid cafe", where she really liked the frilly dresses, but also the way that maids interacted with the customers. She brings that interaction -- audience chanting "magic spells" and her general comedy routine -- to their stage shows during breaks in their performance. The maid uniforms are more than a gimmick: they believe in serving up their highest quality music, always trying to improve as musicians. They are great friends, and can be quite goofy on stage at times -- e.g. pulling faces at the drummer (who responds in kind).

It's even better live and in person. I've seen them three times since October of 2022 and there is no better show to see in person. They specialize in small venue shows where they can interact fully with their fans. You MUST keep track of when they are going to tour here next because when the tickets go on sale they just fly off the ticket site. They are the best hard rock band on the planet right now. They also are the Queens of Instrumentals right now. Put the songs "Onset", "from Now On" and "Without Holding Back" on you list to react to. They have a catalogue that is to die for. And their live shows are something special in a way that no other band does. They never leave the stage, except for calls of nature, and interact with the crowd right up close and personal. Two of the times I was right at the stage within an arm's length of them and the other in the corner of the stage where the lead guitarist Kanami rules the roost. She even came down from the stage at one point and played on the floor right in front of us. But there are also real episode of cuteness. At their show in Salt Lake City at the end of their tour, one of the fans in the audience brought their 7 or 8 year old daughter dressed up as a maid. Miku the founder of the band and general cheerleader and all around funny lady saw her and was almost in tears and had her come to the stage to help Miku during "Omajinai Time", which is the spell-casting time of the show. If you want to see it, just put in "Band Maid-Salt Lake City 2023 - Miku Mini-Me", it really is adorable to watch. You have so much to learn and watch. It will be a wild ride.

Sugoi! After 60 years of loving, assessing, and attending pop, rock, and metal shows, IMHO, BAND-MAID might be the best rock band on the planet, and Mincho might be the best songwriter.
The band consists of Sai-chan (Saiki Atsumi, lead vocals), Gorilla (Akane Hirose, drums), Mincho (Kanami Tono, lead guitar), Cluppo (Miku Kabato, vocals, guitar), and The Barefooted Assassin (MISA, bass). I've seen them twice in the last 11 months, and they are easily one of the best LIVE bands I've ever seen. They are the most FUN and interactive with their audiences ("Japanese lesson time!") bands ever.
    More please!
    Arigatou! 🤘🤘

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

I’m another older rock/metal fan who puts Band Maid on the very short list of best rock bands ever (you’ll notice there’s a lot of us). In my 57 years of listening to rock and metal the list of groups with a catalog as big, and simultaneously very high quality, is a short one. Band Maid is on that list… and, for my money, they are the best active rock band, bar none.
I hadn’t been to a live concert since I saw Rush about 15 years ago but, when Band Maid came around, I didn’t hesitate to get tickets. I spent a lot of money at that show but it was all worth it! As others already said they are their own genre… listen to enough of their songs and you’ll hear that for yourself. The current hot video for reactors is their performance of the songs “Dice” and “Hate?” which were played in succession at Lollapalooza earlier this year. One song goes right into the other and there’s a terrific bass/lead guitar duel interlude.

But, you really should watch their LIVE videos instead of the studio music videos. They are amazing musicians, and when you see them do it live you realize just how relaxed and good they really are. Try Domination (live), or Freedom.

Great band. Their music is diverse whereas you’ll hear pop, rock and even metal in their catalog of songs. They’ll change things in a song during the verse or chorus.
Misa, bass player, Akane, drummer, are in a league of their own. Miku, rhythm guitar, started the band. Kanami, lead guitarist, writes a lot of the songs. She passes her writings to the other members for their input and what they can add to the song. It becomes a joint effort. Saiki, lead singer, has a great voice and adds a stage presence as she leads the band and crowd. Saiki and Miku write most of the lyrics.
May I suggest “Freedom” official live video to see them perform and the chemistry between the band.

I never tire of seeing first-time Band-Maid reactions. The ladies are lightning in a bottle. The group is hard to pin down with a genre because their songs range from hard rock to punk, to blues, to jazz, etc... The more you see them the more they will impress you.
The band itself has been around for 10 years and they keep acquiring more fans as they go. If you check out another song, I would recommend a live video. It really doesn't matter which one, but if you can get the live version of Hate from Lollapalooza this past August, you will see how they won over the crowd and melted that stage.

Second this. Band Maid lyrics are particularly difficult to translate well, since there's so much blending of English and Japanese, and they can be sort of poetic on top of that, and even if you understand Japanese and English perfectly, there are cultural references and allusions. You're really going to struggle no matter what, and there's no way to interpret it well, and do justice to the complexity of their songwriting at the same time. Most of the time, you need at least one listen just to catch all the crazy stuff the bass and drums are doing.
Saiki is an emotive singer, and you'll get enough of a feel just from listening. Digging into the lyrics will work best as a dedicated exercise.

Plenty more from this group. Go back to the early days especially. Their first, Thrill. Then Real Existence (Those first two songs were written by others/something the Japanese music industry does quite often for new artists). Then the song Alone. The first song they were allowed to write compose and produce I think on their own. Then songs like, Daydreaming. Which is my number one favorite song by them. And basically a power-ballad for all time. Then maybe Bubble and Endless Story. These ladies can change it up. They incorporate so many different genres in their music. Sometimes in the same song. There are so many more to list. But live is where they really shine. These women are absolutely incredible. On a side note. Although I'm not a real metal head or fan. There is another great group out of Japan called Neemophilia. Another five piece all female group. Check out a few of their covers first. Although I am not a fan of the group kiss. They do a slamming version of Detroit Rock City. Complete with makeup. Then bon Jovi's bad name and journeys separate ways. Where they try to emulate as best they can. The original video from the late '80s. And lastly if you've got the time. A great song by them. Covering a Japanese group song from some years ago. I don't know the name of the band. But the name of the song is One Night carnival. Take care and be well.

BAND MAID!!! As you see from the other comments, BM is very diverse and genre-bending, even within one song. You just heard one of their songs with a punk rock feel. How about going back 45 years to the late 60's? Check out "The Dragon Cries". Late 70's? "Manners". The song that propelled them into the spotlight was "Thrill", where they broke out from a pigeon holed (you will eventually get that pun) J-Pop sound to a hard rock/metal tone. Akane even features a disco pattern in her drumming in "Freedom". After you have checked out a sampling of their catalog of music videos and live performances, then treat yourself to their acoustic show. These ladies are some of the most talented musicians alive today. Enjoy!

I would say that pretty much all rock at this point is "post-punk" as it is "post-grunge," meaning that those elements have disseminated themselves into rock as a whole, from Foo Fighters on down. "ROCK" is the only word to describe their genre but we call it the Band-Maid Genre. That is why Band-Maid is the best ROCK band on the planet today. This is one of the best bands especially live. They mostly do rock and hard rock but do range across the rock spectrum, even touching into metal for some songs. The amazing part is live, they play that good live, I have seen them. They have been around for 10 years and are the reason I even got back into rock. I do speak japanese but that really doesnt matter, I listen to kpop and other stuff in languages I dont know. They were around 28 at the time of this video(today they are 28 to 32). Also this song and pretty much every song from 2017, the lead guitarist writes all of the music, the rhythm guitarist/leader writes all of the lyrics. You might try a video with Manners and No God together live, these are a very groovy song and more of a hard rock song which they did in their live stream concert back during covid. Newer songs, try Influencer other great songs are Domination, Moratorium, Dice, Sense, wonderland, Bubble(freddy mercury tribute) and 100 more songs all of them good.

Try their latest athen go back down the rabbit hole :-) I'd choose almost anything from their latest E.P. (just not Shambles imhop)
