Jan Hooks doing the fast forward sound was the cherry on top! 😂
That’s the best part! meeneemeeneemeeneemeeneemee 😂
"And I want you to have a...BAD...LIFE!! HA HA HA HA HA!!!"
Classic.
Classic Jan Hooks. Probably my favorite sketch by her. Also love that she was doing the fast forward sounds with her mouth.
YES --- loved that part, too! Jan was SO great.
"Aaaand nobody...nobody could make a waffle like Bert Lahr!" (For those who don't know who he is, he was the Cowardly Lion in "The Wizard Of Oz".
Thank you 😊
I actually didn't know that till now, and I watched this skit when it first aired in 1989. Thanks.
Im dying laughing again just from reading your comment. It's amazing how we laugh just from reading comments of comments we just saw. Thanks, you are appreciated!
We TCM junkies already knew 😊
NOBODY!
Jan never got her props. She was a natural comedian.
she was the best...TINA IN PEE WEE
@@stephenfermoyle4578 A-DO-BE
She was amazing. I had never seen her to a celebrity impression before.
Jan Hooks deserves more recognition for her enormous talent. She was brilliant and this is clear evidence of that fact.
She is so funny in this skit! She's was amazing! I missed her when she left SNL and was heartbroken upon hearing of her death.
Totally agree. I remember seeing Pee-Wee Big Adventure in the theater & couldn’t breath when her tour guide scene came on. Genius.
She was an amazing creative actress who unfortunately left us way too early. I was devastated when I heard the news. She's sadly missed. This skit is brilliant.
Underrated
It is appalling that SNL never put out a Best Of Collection on dvd for Jan Hooks. While the male actors almost all have one, the females were neglected. Even Will Ferrell got 3 volumes : ( Seems Gilda Radner, Cheri Oteri and Amy Poehler were the only female cast members honored with a Best Of collection.
My all time favorite. Jan Hooks was SO brilliant....and underrated. RIP, dear lady.
Hard to believe they’re both gone now
@@LordSkella do you mean jan hooks and gilda?
Jimmey donchey I was referring to Jan and Bette, but yes it is also an absolute shame that Gilda is gone too.
@@donchey51 I thought he meant Jan and Phil
@@LordSkella I know it breaks my heart. Jan Hooks & Phil Hartman were brilliant & hilarious. I hope they're both having a great laugh up at heaven.
I remember the line "nobody could make a waffle like Bert Lahr" so vividly from the night this was first broadcast. Really captured Bette in her late talk show phase of life. Everyone was repeating it at work on Monday. haha!
I think about that line every time I make a waffle.
Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks. Two immensely Talented and Lovable SNL Icons who Both
left us way too soon. RIP Both.
Pure genius, Jan Hooks delivery is flawless, along with the hysterical dialog, Love the run on sentence "wellJohnBarrymoresawthehatanddecidedthenandtherethathedidnotlikeitonebit" in one breath, Brilliant,
"And RONALD COLEMAN SENT ME A DEAD OWL." Oh, God, my face hurts from laughing. That and the bit where she fell out of the chair.
I know exactly what you mean but I don't know if it's funny because it's so well delivered or if it's because the line is so off the wall.
"...and he had lost a bet, that Preston Sturges could hold more cashews in his mouth than me!"
That's the one that stuck with me, ever since I saw this sketch when it aired.
The whole sketch is priceless!
Its priceless, the way she rambles on about nothing, too funny.
"Aaaaand NOBODY! COULD MAKE A WAFFLE, LIKE, BERT LAHR!"
@@theBaron0530 “Well John Barrymore saw this hat anddecidedthenandtherethathedidnotlikeitonebit”
“If you’re watching this, it means I’ve kicked the bucket and you are with that ooooilly lawyer.”
I love the look of disbelief on Nora Dunn's face when she realizes that was just the end of...Tape One!?! Then further embarrassment, that she is not included in the will. One of the greatest sketches on SNL during the 80s. Classic!
One of my all-time favorites and so wonderful to see Phil Hartman in the sketch as well. RIP Jan and Phil. Two of the best!!
**Best Part**
Weeeee wee wee wee wee we...and NOBODY!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
The way she slid into that " and nobody" was absolutely brilliant!
Jan Hooks was SOOOO good on SNL! She should've been a superstar
actually it's well known all the work she turned down over the years. she didn't want to be. a star
And she definitely nailed the mannerisms of the older Bette Davis
@@SavingHistory omg! Yes!
This was my most memorable sketch from SNL ever...that laughing at the end is just killer..Jan got the whole essence of Bette Davis
Truly. How many years later and it still cracks me up?!
"Welcome to Tape 2" kills me every time!
She was terribly underrated!
I remember Jan in Pee Wee’s big Adventure.
RIP Jan and Paul!!❤❤
PHIL Hartman, gone too soon.
Jan’s impression of Tammy Faye Bakker in Church Chat will have to falling out of Your, chair! Comedy BRILLIANCE.
Some say she's still laughing to this day😂
😹😹😹
@@stellabellafontay9366 I sure hope so. What a horrible daughter BD was.
She is still laughing to this day. Jan Hooks.
....from inside the Basement of, THE ALAMO!!!!!!!!
What wasn’t shown were the additional 50 tapes of Bette laughing.
I was reading about Jan' s life and death. She was actually kind of a recluse, never married, not very hungry for fame. She had such bad anxiety that she didn' t even enjoy performing. So sad that she got throat cancer from years of drinking and smoking. This skit has got to be the high point of her career- just brilliant!
I love Bette Davis and have watched many interviews and this is exactly how she was in real life. I laughed so hard I cried and then laughed some more. A haha haha haha . A haha haha haha. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
One of the most underrated, funniest comedy sketches of all time. "I fell out of my chair!"
3:30 - Only Bette Davis could appear on screen before the tape is fully inserted (LOL)
For gods sakes, who wrote that sketch??? Comedic brilliance. Burt Lahr?!??
The fact she didn't leave anything to her ungrateful daughter in real life makes this skit even more hilarious. I think I might leave a video will for my oldest son like that. 🤣
Jan Hooks was about to crack herself up when she was talking about Bert Lahr.
My favorite female cast member ever on SNL. Boy, do I miss Jan Hooks! She was really talented and funny. Oh, yeah, and gorgeous too.
RIP JAN HOOKS...one of my all time favs on Saturday Night!
RIP to Phil Hartman too...brilliant performer!!
How could anyone forget this sketch?! When I first saw this, I clearly remember one of the lines Jan said was "the woman who did my hair was stealing cigarettes from my purse!", and I laughed so hard at how petty that was in a parody of a will deposition.
"I JUST remembered the whole point of making this film is to give away MAH MONEY!"
Jan Hooks was just BEYOND brilliant in this and everything else she did. I've been watching alot of Third Rock From The Sun lately, and her work on there was amazing too. Watching her is like sitting in on a masterclass of comedic acting.
The fast forwarding 🤣
This lady mastered Bette's speech pattern better than Susan Surandon. Props Jan.
By far!!
You know who really could do her just like a recording? Debbie Reynolds.
@@appletree6898 Debbie Reynolds imitated Bette Davis? I'd love to hear that.
@@farrellmcnulty909 There are a couple of interviews with Larry King and Dick Cavett where she does a lot of quick celebrity impressions.
Been 30 years since I first saw it, but I still remember this sketch. Jan Hooks was amazing.
What a great gift to be able to make people laugh for a living.
Jan should have won an Emmy for this.
"AAAND NOBODY!"... Holy shit that got me hollering LOL, Jan Hooks i hope you're laughing like Bette when you played her wherever you are, you were fantastic and hilarious, RIP 🙏💖
Rip 🪦 Bette Davis Jan Hooks and Phil Hartman
"Nobody could make a waffle like Bert Lahr"
That's so true ! One time he sat on his waffle iron by mistake. The result was HOT CROSSED BUNS !
I somehow think this is factual.
This was one of the greatest sketches Jan Hooks did during her time on SNL. Pure genius of a comedienne and there will never be another like Jan Hooks.
💖
I agree she was amazing
Jan Hooks you were a gift to this world OMG
The fast forward sounds kill me
Meeewenemenenene
😂😂
Its fucking stupid
Notice very carefully, the video starts fast forwarding an instant before the sped-up talk.
iamjohngalt I believe because the entire skit was performed completely live, even the videotaped segment. At the end, you can hear Jan echoing from nearby, so I think she was doing the fast-forward sound effect from her place on the set.
😹😹😹
Underrated Jan Hooks sketch...fantastic performance.
Wow classic, still laugh so hard! RIP Bette Davis and the great Jan Hooks! ❤️
The stories she told were so random they are actually believable. Fabulous performance.
Bette would have loved this
@Ed Miller Are you the ghost of Joan Crawford? :D
@Phil Smith
With her Patrick Kelly dress on. LOL
@@nassauguy48 Or it could be B.D. Hyman, still bitter with her various scams and whatnot. and especially bitter about this sketch.
@Ed Miller except she was hilarious at her celebrity roast, so you're wrong
@Ed Miller Bette Davis loves the people impersonate her so people will remember her, so I think you are wrong..
This was hilarious....haha.
Bravo Jan!!!!! Hilarious talented lady
Ronald Colman sent 48 people a dead owl.
Didn't see Jan Hooks do Ms Davis's signature cigarette draw & smoke blow-out (no inhale), but Jan nailed the demeanor beautifully. I miss that SNL crew.
My favorite SNL sketch of all time! She’s brilliant!
Same lol always makes me laugh. My dad loved bette davis so it holds a special place
I just cannot get over this she has Bette down to a T
@@pasadena1994 Yep, specifically that time period of Bette! LOL
@@BroadwayLatinBear EXACTLY that time period was SPOT ON!!!
Agreed!!! I love Bette Davis and this is the best ever. I can't stop watching it and they nailed her. It's perfectly wonderful and I will never tire of it.
I’m so sorry for younger ones who may only recall Jan Hooks from the latter seasons of ‘Designing Women’. She was mega-talented.
Wasn't she in love with beldar on the coneheads?
I remember this!!!! I LOVED Jan Hooks!!!! She was a GREAT COMEDIAN!!!! RIP Jan!!!!
This skit got better the longer it went on, which is the best kind of skit.
I remember seeing this episode live and I was laughing as much as Jan was. BD got exactly what she deserved.
Did BD really expect to be kept in the will?
B.D. didn't want anything to do with it. Some people think money is everything.
@@Trans4md Yes, BD just wanted to be cruel & vindictive. Released the lame copycat “Mommie Dearest” book close to Mother’s Day after her mom was recovering from a stroke. Of course, I’m sure the $100K advance she got at the time factored into her motivation.
@@chatterbox11 I wonder how much sleep BD has lost over the fact that Bette's two Oscars sold for $758,000.00, and she didn't receive one red cent of it? 😂
If you know old Hollywood and the people she is talking about this is even better..."NO ONE and I mean NO ONE could make a waffle like Bert Lahr!" Classic.
“....those were, peeeerfectly good shoes...”
I loved Jan Hooks so much ...anything with her and Phil Hartman in it was always gold
Ronald Coleman sent me a dead owl!
The Harry Ritz reference was brilliant. The thought of Bette Davis and The Ritz Brothers together? Hysterical. I can't stop watching this!
🎥EVERYLINE ICONIC🎥💎🌹💜ME ME ME ME ME ME😂BEE MEH MEH ME BRE MEE MI MEH...U GET N O THING...BRAA HA HA HA etc etc ❗❗❗❗
I roared at that one! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
For some reason I was not watching SNL during the time of this sketch. I really missed out. Jan hooks, Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz---what talented people. Thankfully sketches like this one are still available. Bravo!!
WOW she got the cadence and voice beautifully!! LOVED IT!
One of my all-time favorite SNL sketches... I can still "sing along" almost verbatim... lol
No one could make a waffle like bert lahr.
I fell out of my chair too, laughing!! Love Jan Hooks. She was awesome!! ❤️❤️
Oh man! I just realized it woulda been great if she fell out of her chair again when laughing so hard at the end lol!
Jan dated my brother and was a lovely person whose anxiety with performing added to her passing. She was magic on the show.
".... nobody could make a waffle like Burt Lahr..."
And the lady doing my hair was stealing cigarettes from my purse. 😂😄😅😆
A lot of people won't get this bit. And of course I'm referring to the fast forward on the vcr. Absolutely brilliant!
Yes!
Yes the young folks won't understand
@@viz1 ::
Are you guys sure ? People have been fast-forwarding commercials for a long time. The term :: "Fast-Forward" has been used for a number of metaphors for many years ( ? )
Cliff Gaither I think we are talking about the vhs and beta
@@viz1 :: Oh ! Ok. I forgot about those two devices.
I fell out of my chair.
lol, nice.
@Richard, does this mean anything to you: "Put a lifesaver in your nose, you don't have to chew it" -- ?
Jan Hooks' best piece. Absolutely brilliant.
Jan Hooks was fucking amazing. One of the 3 funniest female SNL cast members of all-time.
this was the year bette davis died? jan hooks nailed just like always , bless her
This was Jan Hooks' finest SNL moment.
Nora Dunn's wig successfully obtained her own contract after this sketch.
I remember watching this live. I think it was over my head at the time. In remember Jan speeding making the high pitched sounds as it was fast forwarding. Classic.
That was brilliant! I never saw this sketch before. When she started laughing I cracked up too.
Fast forward and she’s still laughing. Lol. Too funny. That would be me to all my haters after I die✌🏻
You have “haters?” Wha?
I love this video, have watched it so many times and still laugh
I would LOVE to watch the real full tape of her speech, just to see what she was really saying the whole time, even if it was jibberish it would be great to see. Priceless Jan, she was really, really good. And I miss Phil Hartman to this day.
@Ed Miller I took it as meaning that this was so funny that an extended version would be welcome.
One of my all-time favorite sketches. Jan was amazing.
I recorded this sketch on video back when it aired, and watched it countless times. Laughed out loud [really] each time.
Laughed as loudly and as much just now. Tx to whoever posted this.
I worked with someone who was friends with Ms. Davis in her final years. Sometimes he would play her messages on speakerphone for us, his work friends to hear. No big reveals, but I got the sense of a genuine and caring person who very much had a sense of humor and humility. Just to weigh in lightly on that sidebar.
Jan Hooks, Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman were all brilliant in this sketch And this sketch very much found its audience, one friend popping it in the VCR for another; and on the big screen at gay video bars like Midnight Sun in San Francisco, and Revolver in LA.
Fun memories on several levels, thank you.
Brian W I wish they had actually made a tape of bette’s video will and sold it by itself.
Tha hell? Why would you cite gay bars specifically?? 🤪
Anyone else wanna hear hook’s full ramblings without the fast forwarding?
I want one of Bert Lahr's waffles.....
I honestly wish I could watch the unedited versions of tape 1 and 2 lol.
What a genius Jan Hooks was!
Oh My gosh hysterical and I get all the jokes and all the names it is sublime!!!
Always loved Jan Hooks...epsecially her impersonation of Tammy Faye. Hilarious!
This remains one of the funniest skits in the history of SNL.
Jan Hooks as Bette Davis is straight up comedy gold!
I remember this at the time, this was hysterical and one of the best sketches ever done on the show! Bette was an original, Jann captured her essence pefectly..especially the maniacsl laughing at the end!
Just.....LOL. I really enjoyed that.
I wonder how many times I've watched this. Brilliant! Makes me happy.
"The woman who did my hair was stealing cigarettes from my purse.". LOL.
Jan Hooks was such an amazing talent. She was so funny in everything she chose to do. Her impersonation of Tammy Faye Bakker was hilarious without being mean spirited. I had forgotten this Bette Davis skit, but it is spot on. I also don't believe she got the credit she deserved for her work on Designing Women. I miss her terribly...
Jan Hooks was amazing. Such talent! Left us WAY too soon.
Priceless!
RIP Jan Hooks, you were so beautiful and talented!
I re the fst airing of this sketch decades ago...Me & my besti laughing uncontrollably 😂😂@the great JAN HOOKS .2THIS DAY we can recall MS.HOOKS SPOT ON BETTE😂😂HER REWIND JUST SLAYZZZ💔💜🔥🎥🌹
Lol this was funny to me as a kid and it's still funny to me now...it all comes together at 4:38!! Pettiness at a new level!! That laugh at the end gets me everytime😂😂!!
