- Spraying Candy Paint can be tricky even to an experienced painter but will give you a finish that can be achieved with no other paint, there are a few different ways of going about the process and I will take you through 2 methods that I find work well, I am not a professional at candy paint application but always have a bit of fun trying out these cool custom paints, so check out this video and follow the procedure I have found works best, if you feel there is something I could have done to improve then feel free to let me and others know by adding a comment below.

I'm an apprentice in Germany, and I binge-watch your videos on the weekends mostly. You explain more than even my superiors do, which is sad. But with your help I can do my part in learning on my own. Thank you for your videos, man.
Markus Harlow
KOLORS AUTOBODY, AB CANADA 36 years painting.... THIS INFO IS FOR SPRAYING THE HARD TO SPRAY CANDIES .... Clear Dye Candies are really hard to spray.... Candies with Pearls in them look way nicer and are easier to spray... VERY IMPORTANT, make sure your ground coat covers, any thin spots, scratches etc will be magnified by the candy... 2nd IMPORTANT spray like a robot and count your coats, do not over build the edges, if it takes 8-12 coats of candy to cover the Hood then spray the exact 8-12 coats on the trunk lid... try very hard not to double coat your edges, they will look like 16-24 coats and your paint job will look blotchy.... 3rd IMPORTANT spray nice light even coats that's why it takes so many coats on a candy otherwise it will look blotchy..... 4th Important adjust Gun the same each time spray same air pressure each time.... some candy colors are way easier than other candy colors and smaller projects are easier than larger projects (ie motorbike tank to complete car or truck) hope this helps
You look like a lord of the rings elf.
lm a nurse and had no idea about spray painting cars. 3 month ago i said ah fuck it my car had no value so i thought oh what the hell ill paint it myself. took me 2 weekends to prepare it for painting. My car was sold for $8,000 lol. that was all because of your videos man. keep it up.
+unenslaved2012 Yeah dont worry about HPV, influenza, hepatitis, tetanus and pertussis viruses man. they can only kill your children anyway.
+unenslaved2012 idiot.... go to a country that doesn't vaccinate and visit the sick children..... its horrible. .... and you are promoting doing this to children.... you are an idiot or a very bad person.
+HyralProductions not true at all.... these viruses were round LONG BEFORE we had the technology or knowledge of how to make them.... idiot
+HyralProductions its not an opinion.... its FACT.... and i only call people "idiot" when they dont have any idea about BASIC SCIENCE, yet make really stupid claims. what do you think killed many native Americans all those years ago... chicken pox. we vaccinate against them now..... dont make such stupid uninformed comments next time.... do a bit of research
+HyralProductions you know what a good business would be if most people think like you regarding vaccinations? teeny tiny baby coffins. antobodies from yummy milk from mommies only covers the child for up to 6 months. cant cough up 40 dollars for a vaccine? prove them wrong. prices will go down very fast.
stunning
love how the candy started out pink then after multicoating goes red amazing
Awesome color and paint job!!
Nice work gunny, some great colours, love painting colours that are a bit different from the boring usual stuff
love the color
I always watch this vid before I lay down some candy. Bring on the weekend. cheers gunman
Another very informative video, learning more and more all the time, well done again and thanks, looking forward to many more.
Candy panels look nice ! GPI gun looks like its performing well. Fluorescent lights display every imperfection ! Candy painting large panels or entire cars is intimidating ! You make it look easy Gunman ! : )
Looks like glass, Soooo smooth. Looks great!
my new favourite channel
Like always great work gunny!
nice brother!
that blue looks awesome
Thank you great video, thought you explain it pretty good much better than most
Brilliant love that colour
DAMN, you make that look easy!
Nice color, looks sharp good job
Awesome work mate.
I'm never going to paint - Just a wrench guy, but this is the 3rd video of yours I've watched and it's truly fascinating - I'm taking some motorcycle parts to the paint shop tomorrow and now I have some of the vocabulary to talk with them. Thanks a lot - On to 'How to Flow Coat' : -)
I Love that Blue paint.....I want some!!!!!!
I've sprayed a lot of candy paint over the years. High pressure guns do a bit better. I always over reduced the first 2 or 3 coats and cut the fluid way back just to lightly tint the base with each coat. I use a 75% overlap on those first coats. Then open the fluid back up and put a few more 50% overlap coats on and get it wetter. Your method worked well on those pieces but for an entire car it would be difficult to get it streak and mottle free. There's also a method where you add the candy color to your metallic base coat to tint it and go straight to 50% overlap coats with the candy. This works very well and takes the stress out of those first few coats.
Thanks for your videos, well done. I've been in the market for a few new guns and I'm an Iwata gun and airbrush fan. Been thinking about trying your favorite, the DeVilbiss Tekna. I've been watching your reviews on several different brands and models. Keep the vids coming!
+Kevin Brooks Hey thanks I will try your advice!
what is overlap? is it each pass?
in case you're still wondering, is how much area you go over again on the way back with the gun, is that clear, kinda hard to explain showing is easy. there must be videos about proper overlap, lots of literature about it that's for sure.
Tell ya what though, those gravity fed paint sprayers are really great though, can't beat em. For years prior, when you bought a air spray paint gun, the paint, after mixing, was put in the canister on the bottom, then you started spray painting. Not knockin it though, it to came out nice, however, the gravity ones are even much better to deal with.
Love Iwata guns. Only gun I use.
Candy is beautiful
MrFireman164
love the candy, especially the blue :). here at my local shop they put the colour (lechler) into a clear mix base binder to use. say 900 binder and 100 coloured dye. So coarse metallic silver, then kandy, then lacqueur with 5% uv something to put in it. definitely worth the extra money for the end results for line you say a show type kind of car. Thanks for the video.
1 minute in and i already realized what i was doing wrong....awesome demonstration man thanks
You did a great job! My uncle has painted many many things, and he says that Candy colors are really hard to get perfect...
The second red panel outside looked great, looked as if it was almost transparent through the panel like a piece of glazed glass.
i am very happy watching your videos thank you (:
with love from saudi arabia
Se ve muy fácil y muy bonita pintura saludos
my repo truck is that blue. nice job gun man..
Sweet work
Great video.
Thanks!
BEAUTIFUL
I'm getting this.
excellent vid as always
Thank :-)
Very sharp!
I think it would better to paint the edges of the fender, or anything you are spraying, first.
This way you won't over spray onto the main portion when you do it afterwards. Over spray can leave a "paint dust" layer on anything in the immediate area. And with candies being so thin and semi-transparent it can also result in blotchy areas on the main portion. Better that that "over spray dust" appears on the edges, if any does, rather than the main portion.
Super job
will do. . thank for the input.

Nice tutorial
Thanks man
The Gunman, greetings from Greece. Just a question. I painted my taxi with code 680 yellow colour of ppg and mixed 10% of blue pearl in clear coat. Nice result but... For some reason i 've a difference between rear left door and left rear wing. The door looks brighter and more glossy. Do you think that sanding the door and reducing the clear coat with the pearl, it will match better with the rear wing????? or the only solution is to repaint the wing?
ΓΙΩΡΓΟΣ ΦΛΥΤΖΑΝΗΣ ..1st Gunman nice video lots of solid advice scattered throughout that where we'll said and I agree. Now to the yellow wing Like was said in the video there are a number of variables for the "variance" my first "guess" would be the horizontal orientation of the wing compared to the door being sprayed vertical...a quick check is to observe from above, say on a ladder or deck and compare the wing with the hood/roof/boot do they match yes? No then many other factors can be in play. In any case spray just a wing only. I say this as door probably matches wings/fenders/rear quarters so why risk messing up the rest of the car and wasting a lot of $$$ material only to, possibly, regret the result. I have had similar issues with Porsche style Whale Tails (80's styled wing) getting each surface consistent Simply put candies take Skills that only come with practice
Candy has fascinated me since a teenager. Maybe someday I’ll have a car worthy of the trouble?!
I have this idea in my head to do the candy out the several coats to make the color, then start mixing black candy and fade in the bottom third, mix a tad more black and fade the bottom quarter; more black and do the bottom 15%; the rockers would wind up blue-black. You’d almost have to plan it on paper and do the fades full length with hyper mental concentration to pull it off.
Flawless
When I did candy in the old days we used automotive lacquer. But From what I understand today from they guys who I used to work with who still do candy, is they use straight toner diluted with base clear AKA binder. SO We did less lets say blue and more binder and more layering. We always made our own VS using house of color. For instance we would use Thalo blue and base clear say 10% blue and the rest binder then layer it several coats to the desired transparancy. Then urethane clear after.
Wonderful work. I am old but wouldn't mind being an apprentice 🙂
I haven't painted a car in twenty years. Usually we sprayed candy in dark colour were the metalic can't be seen. We sprayed a red undercoat to save money. Then we got two litres of clear and added one litre of red paint and metallic(aluminium powder) if you wanted metalic. Then we painted over the red base and over that we put six to eight coats of clear. Then cut and polish the cheap clear!
love that color
I've got a 4 part series coming soon on custom paint, you should like it.
you know i'll be there
very beautiful
+The Gunman I have heard that when spraying paint with flake or sparkle you have to always paint in the same direction, never back and fourth. Is this true? I have been practicing with and airbrush but I have not been able to see a difference. Maybe only when using a full size gun?
NICE
Given that candies are so thin and semi-transparent the hardest thing for me when spraying them is getting a consistent even layer of color throughout the entire job, especially ones with a large surface area. Because every coat of candy ever so slightly darkens the layer or layers beneath, so it's very difficult for it not to come out blotchy or streaky over a large area. In an effort to get the color more even throughout I always end up applying more color than I originally intended resulting in the project being much darker than I wanted. Takes some degree of skill and a good amount of experience to do it properly.
Hey just a question do I have to use those exact clear reducer and activators or can I get my own like metallic brand and clear brand ext.
may I ask why you did not change spray pattern between coats? Just curious as a new painter. I did my shop truck with a tri stage but only did 2 coats of green pearl and changed direction of spray from vertical first to then horizontal after. I did however still get a touch of modeling in the pearl coat.
You look like you know what youre doing to me dude!
Yesterday i was trying to paint my motorcycle fairing in some places. Now the the color is darkest on this points. I want to make it to be same or to be like the rest of the surface. I have 2 cans, the base and the second: topping. The color is pb-215c . So i am thinking to try to use roubbing compound to make it lighter. Or to repaint it. What do you think? Any suggestions ? What do you recommend me?
hey man, I use envirobase clearcoat and envirobase PPG paints. How can I get a super smooth clear coat with a 1.0 tip? sometimes it comes out orange peelish. and some runs. How do you avoid that?
Fluid tip size for base coat and fluid tip size for spraying candy paint? What psi should i pray my candy with
is this method working on any other clear brand and on ms or hs ?..
thank you..
great videos gunman👍i am building my own kitchen and wanting to spray paint it, which gravity gun would you suggest for a great finish. not too expensive as I won't be using it very often also which type of paint thanks
I'm looking for this exact set up! Which paint, clear, gun, and compressor would you suggest
I have a midnight pearl nsx and it was repainted and the shop did a decent job but the pearl is nearly gone. Is there anyway to add another few layers of pearl in the clear coat to add the pearl effect? It's hard to explain without seeing it in person.
nice job
gday, im up for spraying a candy colour on a r/t charger tomorrow.
I've been thrown in the deep end with only 2 years painting experience along with a sagola gun.
if its possible could someone tell me the exact measurements i should set my gun up to avoid lines. i already did a test on a boot lid and im incredibly unhappy with the lines
.
i have no choice but to paint this car .
Awesome color I love that blue where can I find more info on that color
never sprayed candy. Is it mixed with the clear? Is it 3-stage paint?
What kind po paint do i need to mix on blue or other color of paint to make metallic blue ist mica or pearl?
So this is what I would probably want for a full respray
Very gud job...
Thanks!!!
If the candy seems to run very easily , what should i change..less thinners?i have a din4..temp about 20 celsius..greay channel mate
Hi, brother, that's fine, it takes me a doubt of how many micros are the sieves that you use to strip the impurities of the ink.
Pls do reply..
I have done candy (tinted clear) and didnt add any clear coat over it.. Can i do it after wet sanding the candy??
looks awesome
Brilliant colour hey, thanks again for watching mate :-)
The Gunman what colour is the blue
Frazer H DNA Paints Sapphire blue candy.
ola tudo bom vc usa qual tipo de prime e qual tipo de tintas para pintura automotivo
How do you protect candy paint from uv sun rays. I was told that candy paint fades quick between 1-5 years. I know quality of paint is a factor. Assuming all paint etc is top brand and sprayed correctly. And do you recomend great candy and clear etc
Are you mixing candyblue to clear coat ? And are you clear again after that ?
looks good....no sanding prepping the paint
Exact color I’m looking for to paint my Supra however all the sapphire blue paints I find are too dark and the closest other color I see is cobalt but there’s too much purple in the cobalt, where can I get a color identical or really damn close to the blue used in the video? Thanks.
what are the base metallic coat for white blue yamaha nouvo lc scooter year 2015? please help me, my paint job was abandoned for too long
how long did u let the paint dry befode u add tbhe clear coat
I painted candy apple red on a old truck. I used polyester basecoat candy apple red and I put even light coats on and counted how many I put on as I had to do other panel's the next day when the truck was all put back together it all match in
Came for the paint tutorial and went nuts with the Dub step.
I am painter at Hyundai showroom . nice ur job
What DEVILBISS did you shoot with I’m using the TENKA 3 gun set and want to get guns just for Kustoms
Great work mate.... But hear is a question that has baffled my painter he been painting for over 28years and he's real good but my Harley just got painted with silver base and candy orange with 5 coats of clear but after 4 weeks some of my paint has lifeted and is still wet and won't stick to the base coat could this be because there's so many coats and should it be baked as we can't work out why it's not sticking thanks
What will be the difference if i use a black base instead of your silver ? i heard they call it something of a "ghost pearl" i want the shine and depth of the candy but would also like a bit of a difference in shading. little light and dark effect. Im hoping it will look good on a vintage vw beetle
ive Sprayed lots of candy paints house of colors, ppg vibrance lines your doing the basics very well But.... Your going to heavy on the dust coat for the Kandy don't lay it on heavy like that.. thts why you got the runs you did but over all your doing well my friend and leave a gd heal time in between
i mix my first 2 coats with intercoat, helped me a lot with getting even coverage much faster..also helped with door jambs because it helped duplicate the concentrated shade
Do you find the ppg vibrance looks better then house of kolor . I seen videos of the mazda 41v and 46v they look badass . Do they look the same as hok candy apple red or RR from Ford? Thanks and best wishes ✌💯
Yeah...I've sprayed House of Colour candy...I believe they wanted the first coat thinned 200% instead of 150% like the rest of the coats, if I remember correctly. Loved the colour of Brandywine, always put on twice as many coats as recommended. I found after experimentation that you would actually see a blue tinge in low light, if you put on 10 or more coats.
Hi, which color unfounded do you best use for Candy Red? I am from belgium and use Google Translator, sorry if I do not write it correctly. mvg hugo
what color did you use?
Been researching how to respray my Triton ute...found your awesome videos....clicked on this "how to spray candy" video out of curiosity...and what are you painting?....a Triton gaurd :D
I love candy blue
do you know how they do that electric blue on the tundra
What do you think about the DNA paint im on my sons page im in the US really want to try it
So the process for doing candy in a flow coat, would be primer, base coat, clear. Sand it, then clear it again with candy, then clear again??
Where do you buy your paint, And whats kind of blue is it?
Nice job man. What air paint gun did you use?
Whats diamond clear and is reducer thinners?
How do you filter the paint? (to take out sediments)
Nice
holy f*** anyone else amazed?!! wow that looks amazing
Thanks mate
