'We'll be as we are, when all the fools who doubt us fade away...' That's a more meaningful and affecting lyric than 90% of today's bands could manage throughout their entire career. Boots we salute you!
Yes, “has”. There’s still time for a movie to pick one or two of their wonderful songs from their extensive and excellent back catalogue and thanks to a Hollywood projector he might just get the exposure he deserves finally. It’s criminal that while Spandau Ballet, Bow wow wow and other assorted crap was floating around they just couldn’t catch a break. Great great hooks great melodies songs he’ll they had it all except for a coherent image and McNabs occasional ally uncertain dress sense although his gear usually looked good when my mates copied him😂 I was always too wee to carry off long coats and biker jackets. Never got on with the string tie though Ian! Anyway, long live Ian Mcnabb and let’s remember those halcyon days!
I remember watching this during this actual first broadcast - probably late summer of ‘84. I was 16, and young as I was, I knew I was watching a band of incredible talent and energy. And now here we all are, folks, middle bloody aged. Aghh!
Amen to that - watching Chris Sharrock was one of the joys of seeing them live. That, and that beautiful Moog string synth sound... I must have seen them live about 30 times back in the 80's. And it's been years since I've heard this, yet I still know every single word.......
loved this when it came out in 85 its my favourite song of all time. The lad is still at it writing quality stuff and gigging. Only the Nabbster would get away with writing a song whose 1st 2 lines rhyme "you" with "you" lol
Agrees with Loomjoove, saw these guys at least 10 times in the 80's, and every show was an Elevated Party, and man, COULD Ian play back then!!!!. still have Black and White photos i took during an 80s gig in Blackburn Polytech....... Never understood why the Icicles were not huge, they could write pop songs (and did!) that where sooo catchy and tuneful, as well as rock the house down with the best of em. Cudo's to Ian for not selling out and doing what he dreamed of!.
Remember seeing this lineup on two occasions in the student union at Queens in Belfast in the mid 80's......absolutely fantastic. Seen a lot of bands, some really big name bands, but a lot of them didnt come close to those 2 gigs in Belfast. Still go to see Ian when he's up this way. I now live in York. 😁
I remember at school listening to a Kiss tape on my sony and my friend next to me asked "wot you listening to?". I told him and then he gave me what he was listening to on his sony, he lent me Seven Singles Deep and said "Listen to some decent music."
first time i heard this song and i have to admit that was a damn good song the icicle works has a knack for really making you feel things in there work unlike the pure crap that is on the air today it really is a shame to see what radio has come to today people can call it what they will but it is not freakin music it is just cursing threats and violence on todays radio i wish i was old enough to understand the music in the 80s
Best live band I ever saw and I've seen a few- McNabb is nothing but a genious and Sharrock must be Keith Moon reincarnate- most underated band ever by a country mile- FACT
@Criddington I went to a mcnabb solo acoustic show recently(july 2011),a brilliant gig. When getting a cd signed afterward I asked him if there were anymore icies gigs planned, and He said ''yes, and with the original line up''.I asked what Chris Layhe was doing and Ian said he was a teacher in Stockport
...i love reminiscing my wxb102 days, wow with this song, b4 goin to school, it gives me a dramatic cool change in my school day's attitude and my perspective in studying...this song was great!!!.....genius in the making!!! thx for posting it.
@thepurplecockney That's great to hear - I missed on the gigs in April because it was during my university term time, so hopefully I can catch them soon, though I've seen Ian live several times and loved it!
I used to go and watch the Icicle Works whenever I got chance and those were some of the best gigs I’ve ever attended. And I’ve seen a lot of gigs in my time. Beyond brilliant. ❤️
What an absolutely brilliant song ... a socialist anthem if ever there was one ... 'We'll be where we are, when all the fools who doubt us fade away' .. spot one .. Fucking awesome'... No Surrender !
The drummer is Chris Sharrock. The first album is one of my favorites of all time. Sharrock's creative drum work was essential to it. The first album was more dreamy and psychedelic. Then they turned into a standard rock band with a few good songs here and there. Understanding Jane is one of them. I don't like the video. Cognitive dissonance--I can't reconcile beach party with Icicle Works.
Justin you hit it on the head. The only music genres that has kept quility are the bands from the 80's still writing. And Metal(as a whole). The "top 40" is absolute GARBAGE with almost no exception. The over produced crap is horrible. If you dont believe it go see some of the current acts live, its like a greek tragedy.
One of the most under rated bands ever. Great song
agree never quite had the 'cool' of the zoo records roster but still the music speaks for itself!
'We'll be as we are, when all the fools who doubt us fade away...'

What a great song,McNabb is one of the best singer/songwriters Britain has ever had.

Just surprised over the years he's never been on later...and should have been..jools hollands a fan ..😮gazzz
British New Wave music at it's finest, and I am old enough to remember those times.
When I first heard Hollow Horse in the 80's I thought it was amazing. Saw Icicle Works at Eric's in Liverpool. Never got the recognition they deserved
I remember watching this during this actual first broadcast - probably late summer of ‘84. I was 16, and young as I was, I knew I was watching a band of incredible talent and energy. And now here we all are, folks, middle bloody aged. Aghh!
Saw them at Aberdeen Venue in the 80s , I remember they had so much power and energy for a 3 piece , and the drummer was fantastic 👌
Fantastic live version. Anyone watching this in 2021 ? Timeless !
Watching it in 2024.
Some bass n drum action - superb

The original 12" version is the best song of the '80s, bar none. Superb!
The Icicles were my first gig... unforgettable.

The 1980s were the best decade for music and movies!
I saw them in London in 1985. It was an amazing gig.
Hollow Horse was released in September 1984. This show was recorded some weeks after.
I remember at school listening to a Kiss tape on my sony and my friend next to me asked "wot you listening to?". I told him and then he gave me what he was listening to on his sony, he lent me Seven Singles Deep and said "Listen to some decent music."
awesome band , im only 19 but i love this band . my mum introduced me to em.
Wow you're 30 now
I've loved this band since Nirvana was released.....and still love them today.
They should've been bigger than they were ❤
as epic an anthem as had ever been penned.

Chris Sharrock, superb drummer
Best live band I ever saw and I've seen a few- McNabb is nothing but a genious and Sharrock must be Keith Moon reincarnate- most underated band ever by a country mile- FACT
Yup
One of the best songs made in the 80's!
80's with a sixties feel. Very good!
A BIG sound !! If by a more fashionable band , would've been a huge hit !
@Criddington I went to a mcnabb solo acoustic show recently(july 2011),a brilliant gig.

Great songs, musicians and writers. One of my favourite songs.
The tube was so great - Jools still going stronger than ever of course. Icicle Works - sheer genius
One of my favorite bands in the '80s. Ian's voice here is at its best!
Excellent band. Saw then live three times and has to be the best gifs I have ever attended.
hard to say what my favourite song of all time is, but this must be up there.
Great song, brilliant drumming.
A band that were underrated and yet everyone seemed to rate them.
Love this song in 2021!
I saw them in the early 80s and they always stuck in my head as being fantastic live , really good band
Lyrics of my life
ps anyone else remember the icicles playing the masonic arms in the pool ?
...i love reminiscing my wxb102 days, wow with this song, b4 goin to school, it gives me a dramatic cool change in my school day's attitude and my perspective in studying...this song was great!!!.....genius in the making!!! thx for posting it.
80's alternative music in the Philippines is unforgettable
Still a great band, see them if you can, or miss out.
@thepurplecockney That's great to hear - I missed on the gigs in April because it was during my university term time, so hopefully I can catch them soon, though I've seen Ian live several times and loved it!
Beautiful cymbal work.
Hope McNabb gets him back for the Icicle Works reunion tour next April.....not exactly busy with Oasis is he, lol. Superb drummer....
I saw this band too !!! BRILLIANT Live !!
"WHEN ALL THE FOOLS WHO DOUBT US FADE AWAY" yeaaaaaaaaah
I used to go and watch the Icicle Works whenever I got chance and those were some of the best gigs I’ve ever attended.
And I’ve seen a lot of gigs in my time.
Beyond brilliant. ❤️
Think this was from the tube December 1984, the Stranglers and the Art of noise were on as well.
Spine tingling..rock of ages
I love this song
Savw them live at Fat Sams in Dundee Scotland, 1990. Great and underated band. Many great songs!
chris sharrock,he joined the la's,the lightning seeds, world party, robbie williams band and is now drummer with oasis
Remember this when it was broadcast - Great post!! :)
i just bloody love this!
Still the best
Legendary 💖👌
Brilliant
What an absolutely brilliant song ... a socialist anthem if ever there was one ... 'We'll be where we are, when all the fools who doubt us fade away' .. spot one .. Fucking awesome'... No Surrender !
Does anyone know what happened to (Big) Chris the bassist?
He's a teacher at Stockport.
Wow 😲 A wall of sound 🤟🤟
@weirandstubbs My dad toured with them for a month or two in the eighties and he said he's the best drummer who ever lived lol
Just brilliant!
Perfect
Top song
EPIC!
Hollow Horse is fantastic.
But failed in the Charts.
magnificent !
McNabb made a Kazoo on this, if I remember rightly.Or maybe another ?
@HouserKat And he was a huge Kiss fan.His brother was in the Kiss Army.
Better than the recorded version.
Great
McNabb's guitar phrase, was inspired Irish folk ?
Sounding very New order this one 😉
I can't agree with the last assessment, although I respect all opinions. However, this is a brilliant song.
heavy
@SweetSweetWaldo name of album?
May sound like a dumb question but what year was this from?
