Be careful what you dream of
it may come up and surprise you
I can't confess my life's a mess
I've come to idolise you
You liken it to walking on hot coals
I'll keep my boots on
Wisen up and fly straight
There's a shape on the horizon
In a hollow horse I'll steal my way
inside your guarded heart
So selfishly the needs I harbour
when we are apart
My past strung out behind me,
contradiction and disaster
I'm in search of charity,
a union I could master
We'll be as we are
When all the fools
who doubt us fade away
Fortune deep and wide
Intimidated, restless in the wait
Things I chose to value
I no longer have a use for
I ridicule myself for all the things
those symbols stood for
When vanity has played a part
in every leader's downfall
Wait to storm the gates, what's left
undone to hang around for
We'll be as we are
When all the fools
who doubt us fade away
Fortune deep and wide
Intimidated, restless in the wait
Icicle Works - Hollow Horse Lyrics
(McNabb/Layhe)
Be careful what you dream of

In a hollow horse I'll steal my way
Inside your guarded heart
So selfishly the needs I harbour
When we are apart

Great band, hugely underrated
Got the 12 inch of this the day it came out. It barely made the charts, but should have been an enormous hit. Still sounds brilliant today.
agree
They made some great music a very underrated band ,nice to see them touring again a great track and excellent vocals.
The lyrics are incredible and have stood the test of time. The instrumentation and production of this for an early 80s production is also mind blowing. Remains one of my favourite all-time songs.
Hugely underrated band - and this song in particular proves the point. Stunning piece of work!
Mark Persad great band who I can't wait to see tomorrow night
Hope you had a great time at the concert!
Regards
Mark
Had a great night with a band that connects so well with its music and it's followers.
Chris's drumming rules duuuuuuuuuuude
Always loved these guys....Never to be such a brilliant music era such as this EVERRRRR
Up the Icies! Up the Icies! Up the Icies! When it all comes down they were seriously great; I loved them when I was in my perambulator.
If a more "fashionable band" had released this,it would've been massive.
+Melvyn Gingell This!
The lyrics alone blow me away. Why do good things have to end !
Sheer class…the icicle works…. Another icicle worker…when vanity has played a part
I can't be totally sure this is my favourite song of all time, but it's damn well up there!,and I've heard f###### loads of songs!
Sounds just as good today, as it did when released, Classic.
I missed this in 1984. Glad I'm discovering it now. Excellence I believe 🌞
I agree with most comments. A most underated band & don't know why they aren't more generally known. I think they are great & deserve more recognition. They've had some great tracks.
I just keep listening!,never get bored of this!
One of my all time favorites!
We used to listen to there cassette tapes every day at the carpet factory. Brings back some great memory's.
Greetings from Liverpool.Home of the ICIES! Thats is my favourite track from them.I have never seen this video! Thank you!
I bought the original 12 inch of this with the extended guitar break. Loved it then and I love it now... this is a magnificent piece of rock music... it's got hit written all over it but we the Icies never took the conventional route to success.... Ian Mcnabb: Rock God!
Powerful pleasing voice. Love their stuff
How this missed the charts is a mystery. Great chorus.
Magnificent!
Wonderful beyond words !
Perfect pop song
Great. I didn't knew this band, in 1984 only well placed bands in the commercial circuit were known outside UK, I knew some of them because the cousin of a friend of mine brought back some cassettes from the US. And today this is happening again! If there was not internet, I wouldn't have known bands like this. Thanks for sharing, again!
Thank you for THIS!!!!!!! Gigantic...
Sounds great, wish some bands here sounded like that =/. Greetings from Mexico.
I agree with most, truly great song.
I read somewhere "The drummer's got four arms!" yeah! ,more like an octopus!!
Great Rock Voice!
They're touring again. Roll on next month.
I love it
Got the original 12in too!
Great tune just like Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream)
Still the best
I'll keep my boots on.
Superb song. Great video. btw who are the 3 Asian dudes? They did a great job as well!
Super! @
The problem with the Icicle Works is imagining that golem Mike Reid pumping some poor woman while listening to them.
Edgar..
@subedeithemongol I had a fanzine with the quote 'we're famous for Mike Reid s**gging to our records' .
Also about Derek Hatton... 'Basically the kids understand he's a kn*bhead' .
it was mike read, the DJ. Not Frank from Eastenders. Just thought I'd clear that up. Though both images are highly unpleasant.
rather picture mike read than jimmy savile on the job. ........love from the new forest
The 12in version has 2 tracks on the other side,The Atheist and a track called Nirvana, does anyone know if Nirvana named their band after this song?
Sorry but it now sounds boring and mediocre to me in 2023. I quite liked it back then too.
They were a US one hit wonder. This was not the hit.
Actually in the UK they only made the Top 40 once, but this was one of those that made the Bottom 60.
