Crystal, I'm amazed you picked this album to do, and great analysis as always! This album always felt unfinished to me, some truly beautiful moments combined with unfinished patchwork. And when I eventually heard the Smile album, I realized what this was really supposed to be. Smile is a true work of art, so I'd be curious to see what you think of that one!
Hey there Jerry! 🩷🩷🩷🩷
Thank you oh so very very very very much! Sending you all my love! That is truly insightful and a thoughtful, kind and honest observation on this album! Lots of great moments but totally unfinished and a bit patchy! I’m very curious about Smile!!!!
@CrystalShannon4 Smile is the most ambitious album Brian Wilson ever attempted, and for years, he never got to finish it. It was meant to be the follow-up to Pet Sounds. The other band members felt it was too complex and noncommercial, but it was Brian's magnum opus and he wanted to finish it, but it drove him crazy. Decades later, Brian finished it with the help of some amazing studio musicians. When Brian had so many mental problems, aggravated by drugs, he had left the music industry, and nobody ever in their wildest dreams thought he would ever sing again, let alone write music. Yet he climbed back from oblivion, got therapy, released some great music, and finally finished Smile! An absolute miracle.
@@jerrymanas671Woah! what an amazing, terrifying, devastating but ultimately triumphant, legendary & inspirational story! Hats off to the brilliant Brian Wilson! Yes Brian Wilson did complete Smile in 2004 and here is a link to his live performance...

The Beach Boys Today! is my favorite album of theirs. It’s a great mix between Pet Sounds and their earlier rock music
Definitely keep going through their late 60s/70s albums. The ones after Smiley Smile (Wild Honey, 20/20, Friends is the best one) are a bit hit and miss but lots of fun but then you get Sunflower and Surf's Up, two absolute classics. Then the band changes a few members and you get Carl & The Passions and Holland, so interesting in how the band are trying to reshape themselves and their songwriting without Brian leading the way. I mean, even Mike Love wrote a good song on Holland!
They sort of went oldies after that, though I'd also recommend Love You, where they let Brian loose one more time to do his thing and it's an odd, corny but really charming album.
Even though this album is ultimately a compromised version of the Smile project, I still think it’s brilliant in its own right. Arguably my favorite Beach Boys record.
What do you think of Brain's "rebooted" Smile album? It's fascinating to listen to both versions of what is essentially the same project.
LETS GOOOO!! The Beach Boys I genuinely think are insanely underrated outside of Pet Sounds. They changed their sound SO much on every album throughout the late 60s and early 70s, it’s unreal. Also as other people have said, you really gotta check out the Smile Sessions too, they’re honestly mind blowing. Even in their unfinished form it is still my favorite work of The Beach Boys
I was just having a gas watching your expressions on some of the songs, especially the Fall Breaks and Little Pad songs. Smiley Smile is the consolation prize we as fans got when SMiLE fell apart, though I would recommend checking out The Beach Boys SMiLE after finishing this album. Here's some things to note for this:
Heroes And Villains: There is a verse that was left out called 'In The Cantina', once you hear the SMiLE version with that part, then the song sounds longer.
Vegetables: Paul McCartney is eating celery on this song. There's a part that was left out of this version called 'Mama Said' which can be found on the next album, Wild Honey.
Fall Breaks: Its actually a remade song of the SMiLE track The Elements:Fire aka Mrs O'Leary's Cow
She's Goin Bald: A remade version with new lyrics of the SMiLE track, He Gives Speeches, I prefer Speeches more than this, even though this is humorous.
Little Pad: I believe borrows from either the songs On A Holiday and Love To Say Da Da from SMiLE.
Hahaha thank you! the reactions were filled with interesting and mortifying facial expressions by me, definitely got a load of that in editing! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this thoughtful and thorough break down! Lots to look forward to and uncover together! 🤍 I hope with all my heart that you are having the most fabulous day and that you enjoy our newest reaction! czcams.com/video/Ps0vgJ_xhag/video.htmlsi=nreUueXfk2lfgwcx
Great reaction as usual and even greater editing! The slowmotion part had me in stitches 😂
Crystal! What a lovely surprise! I didn’t see this coming and I’m so happy. “Smile” was the follow-up to “Pet Sounds” and Brian Wilson wanted to go in a completely different direction.
Where “Pet Sounds” was deeply introspective and personal, “Smile” is really about America. This album was truly the most experimental The Beach Boys got, but it also led to the band becoming irreparably damaged.
Wait until you get to “Good Vibrations”. My favorite Beach Boys song.
🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
my wonderful and miraculous friend!!!! 💛💛💛💛 thank you for stopping by and sharing this time with me! you always make my day better!!!!!

@@CrystalShannon4 I enjoy your videos very much. Add the fact that you are well versed in music theory makes your posts all more interesting and enjoyable.

I always learn so much from your great show.seen them all and look forward to each show.
you are far too kind! 💛 thank you my friend!
Thanks for this!
I don’t know that I’ve ever listened to this album. Interesting composition. This must have been during their psychedelic phase…lol. Hope you’re having a super wonderful day, Crystal, and sending you much love. 💕💕💕🙏🙏😊🎼
It is indeed quite interesting! Thank you for taking a chance on it today with me! 💛 I am sending you all of my love! 💛💛 I hope you are having the most fabulous day! 💛💛💛💛✨
I recommend Sunflower and Surfs Up, really interesting albums with some of their best tracks ever sprinkled throughout: e.g. Til I die
ooohhhh i’m excited to dove into those! 🤍 thank you for the recommendation! 🤍🤍 sending you my love & hoping you enjoy today’s video: czcams.com/video/Ps0vgJ_xhag/video.htmlsi=EZPiiBDTc1oMBxTp
And also Friends another great album
Till I Die is wonderful. The Surf's Up song was originally thought up during the Smile sessions, there's a haunting version from then of just Brian Wilson's vocal with his piano.
Bravo Crystal. I liked that Piano Man intro too. Great vibes and cool video!
Compare this to "THE SMiLE Sessions" and it pales in comparison. "SMiLE" was every bit as epic as "PET SOUNDS" and can finally be heard... "Smiley Smile" still uses some of the songs from SMiLE to make a good record... but... you've got to experience the majesty of "Surf's Up" "Cabin Essense," "Wind Chimes," "Good Vibrations," "Wonderful," "Do You Like Worms," and "The Elements" suite... it's up there with THE BEATLES' best. ...also wanted to add, I love your videos... you put so much thought into each song and it's an organic reaction, steeped in some helpful knowledge of music, that's never phony.
Also: Just thought I'd throw a few recommendations your way... judging by your reactions what you might find excellent:
GRANDADDY "The Sophtware Slump" (Like Radiohead fronted by Neil Young... an amazing album to mark the new century.)
ELBOW "The Seldom Seen Kid" (one of the greatest voices in rock... Guy Garvey, fronts this incredible band.... they also do a version with an orchestra and choir at Abby Road Studios that amazing)
I get shivers up the spine every time I hear heroes and villains. And to think the Fabs took you there too.
😎👍 In the U.S, The Beatles and The Beach Boys were on the same label (Capitol) and the two groups were friendly with each other. By most accounts, in the spring of 1967, Paul McCartney spent a few days in California and paid a visit to Brian Wilson's home studio. Reportedly he didn't actually participate in any of the recording, but did observe some of the proceedings.
The sad part about Smiley Smile is that the American press and The British Press trashed the album at the time, even to go so far as to call the Beach Boys in 1967 a bunch of" Surfing Doris Days"(The funny part about it is that Doris Day's Son Terry Melcher was working with the Beach Boys and many California Groups at the time as a record producer).Carl Wilson called the Album a bunt instead of grand slam (using baseball terms).
It reached number 9 in the uk album chart,it was only heroes & villains that confused the critics, otherwise it was received well, they were/are much more loved here than in there homeland.
@@michaeldaley5831 The media in The States were more harsher than the UK Media. They saw the Beach Boys as outdated compared to The music of The Doors, The Jefferson Airplane and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The music shifted from L.A and London to San Francisco in the 1967 according to Barry Miles in his Book "Hippie"
Please do the smile sessions it will blow your mind
You should listen to "The Smile Sessions" or "Brian Wilson: Smile" also, both are phenomenal!
Great reaction, Miss Crystal Shannon! Smiley Smile definitely has some good songs on it - and weird fun ones, like "She's Goin' Bald." The album is a more humble, laid back, work when compared with SMiLE.
you must listen to "Surf's Up" by Beach Boys, Brian Wilson - it's a Masterpiece...
McCartney may be one of those chewing celery on Vegetables.
If you don't know it already I recommend the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album.
oh my goodness! thank you for sharing that ! 💛 always great to know when McCartney has anything to do with something!!!! & wonderful suggestion! thank you my friend 💛
Paul McCartney was on the original version of Vegetables from Smile but not on the remake on Smiley Smile.
The woodpecker song sounded like the fire song in smile
It’s a very strange album. You did well to get through the first side. 😀
I appreciate that 🥹 thank you for joining me along the way with this wild one! I hope you are having a divine day and that you enjoy our new reaction: czcams.com/video/Ps0vgJ_xhag/video.htmlsi=nreUueXfk2lfgwcx
Please do the "Surf's Up" (it's not about surfing) and "til I Die" songs, off the Surf's Up album. This came out very late in their carrier.
Crystal, thank you for doing this. Since a lot of these are re-recordings of the smile sessions, here is the link for the actual Smile Album if you ever want to either react to it later on, or listen on your own time - czcams.com/play/OLAK5uy_nxIc_jgGLl2oySdkh_ad6J__vTC1AOCa4.html&si=bIiLEfu1Ra-nLjo0
Un gran album psicodelico lo fi, tenes que reaccionar.el album odessey and oracle de the zombies
Kind of awesome you introduced this album with a sheepish-ish admission that "I, a 'musician,' never heard it..." because, as you may very well know, Macca said, of the iconic "Pet Sounds," that one cannot consider oneself "musically educated" if one has not heard THAT album. (Sting had his "God Only Knows" type moment when McCartney said he wished that HE'D written the former Police songwriter's "Fields of Gold." ) Anyhow, school's in session--learn and teach, lol!
"Smiley Smile" is fun and weird.
Gotta listen to "Wind Chimes" while you're taking a nap. You'll think you dreamed it.
wow that’s an excellent idea! I might just have to do that now haha! 💛✨
my friend! 🤍🤍🤍🤍 thank you for that suggestion, you were absolutely spot on! what a magical experience! I hope you are having a delightful day and that you enjoy today’s new video: czcams.com/video/Ps0vgJ_xhag/video.htmlsi=nreUueXfk2lfgwcx
Hello. I'm sure you've had enough of Beach Boys material for a while, but once you're ready check out the Smile Sessions and/or Brian Wilson presents Smile. They blow Smiley out the water even though i liked it.
Beatles do drugs - Sgt Pepper. Beach Boys do drugs - Smiley Smile.
ahhh so tru 😂🤍
I hope you enjoy today’s video & sending you my love dear friend czcams.com/video/Ps0vgJ_xhag/video.htmlsi=EZPiiBDTc1oMBxTp
I'm betting at some point you're going to review the album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John. Although I think "Sleeping with the Past" would be more interesting.
GYBR is probably the best double album ever.
Your theme should be Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James and the Shondells lol. Really Queen's harmony vocals have nothing on the Beach Boys when you do the research like Crystal has here.
Thanks! Have you considered a Patreon or a public email address? Would be nice to be able to send you proper hyperlinks which aren’t usually supported on CZcams. Just a thought…❤️🧐❤️
hey there my friend! 🩷 I actually tried to make a patreon last year and ran into a bunch of difficulties trying to upload videos so I gave up on it! perhaps I will try again in the future! 🩷🩷🩷 I appreciate all the support you give! you are an absolute blessing to me and this channel! love you a whole lot !!!!
but we do in fact have a new video out today if you would like to check it out 🤍🤍🤍🤍 czcams.com/video/Ps0vgJ_xhag/video.htmlsi=30UX1RKaeq4K4Jcp
Sorry sound quality not good 😢
Wild Honey and Holland are even better
Oh nyooo isnt this the wrong one? actual beach boys album that was supposed to be is Smile Sessions
The problem with this album is that it's not Smile. There's some great stuff but there's a lot of weak cuts that just sound unfinished and very bare.
Considering what Smile was going to be, and what came of it in the form of Smiley Smile, it really is disappointing for so many reasons. From the ashes of the Smile project came this.
You used the word “experimental” but it is a patch job, because Brian Wilson who was the main creator in the band shelved the original project, for many reasons. I think you should explore The Smile Sessions Box Set from the 60’s which even in its fragmented state shows a good example of what might of been as even in its unfinished state, it’s better than this album offering. Even Sunflower is better than this and I love The Beach Boys. Some comments on the tracks for anyone who cares:
1. Heroes & Villains - 7.5/10 - Lots of parts were recorded for this song based on Brian’s modular approach to recording and was originally for the Smile album. In spite of its shortened state, (no “In the cantina” the song is still good.
2. Vegetables - 7/10 - Part of The Elements suite for the Smile album. Always liked this song but in this album it doesn’t have the strength based on the fact there is no cohesion.
3. Fall Breaks Back To Winter - 5/10 This was meant to be part of The Elements suite, Fire, but it’s a weaker version. No impact punching drums, less eerie than other versions, I hate it.
4. She’s Goin Bald - I don’t mind the tune, lyrics are ok but this was originally, “He Gives Speeches” and arguably, that’s the better version even in its unfinished state. The transitions you mention I dislike, would rather cut them out.
5. Little Pad - 7/10 Beautiful song, in spite of how short it is. Harmonies, ukulele, it really transports you.
I do hope you’ll react to Smile Sessions The Box Set, and also the 2004 Smile version to hear some of the songs in their completed form. For me though, the Pyrenees of the 60’s versions even in their unfinished state but with the harmonies of the original line up is unbeatable. Also The Beach Boys Sunflower is a great solid album 👍🏼
Hi Cyrstal you rock, but the Beach Boys on this LP didn't and it really was not a good album as compared to what went before. The Beach Boys tried to hard to be America's answer to The Beatles but fell flat most of the time-my 2 cents.
Carl called the album a bunt instead of a grand slam (using baseball terms). After this album younger brother Carl would take over the reins of The Group from Brian and record "WIld Honey" (with little imput from Brian)" released in December 1967.
Ahhh well i’m definitely excited to get into different Beach Boys albums! I hope you enjoy today’s video 🤍 sending my love & hoping you have an astounding day my friend! czcams.com/video/Ps0vgJ_xhag/video.htmlsi=EZPiiBDTc1oMBxTp
Please don't take months to do side two.
