I have an incompetent cervix. How common is a cerclage and bedrest afterwards?

- An incompetent cervix is a cervix that just won't stay shut and retain a pregnancy, and a woman is classically given the diagnosis of an incompetent cervix if she has multiple recurrent losses in the 2nd trimester in the absence of labor or pain. And it's so unfortunate when this happens. You mentioned that you might possibly have an incompetent cervix, and they're going to do more testing and watch you very closely, and that's good that they're keeping a close watch on you. You asked a good question - how often do they do a cerclage and put you on bed rest and see what happens? There's not an easy way to answer this, there's not a percentage because every case is so different, and this is a good question for your doctor. You mentioned you weren't able to ask at your last appointment, but call their office and see if they'd be willing to chat with you before you have your next appointment. They can tell you what their intentions are based on the circumstances in your situation.
There's great risk with a cerclage because it's like a purse-string stitch that's placed in the cervix and it pulls it shut. And in most cases, this holds everything closed until you get far enough along in pregnancy where the doctor can remove the stitch, and then if you go into labor shortly after, then it would be okay. When doing this procedure though, for one, it generally requires anesthesia - that's always a risk, but biggest risk to the pregnancy is that in placing the cerclage, they could poke the amniotic membrane and rupture the membranes, and infection is always a risk too. So the benefits have to far outweigh the risk, even though the risk is great, it means that the situation has to be pretty severe and intense for them to want to try a cerclage. In most cases, these are called rescue cerclages where they're done in a pregnancy with no prior history of loss.
Now sometimes they do a preventative cerclage, meaning that it's put in place around 12-14 weeks gestation to prevent a woman from having complications when they know in the past she's had at least 2 pregnancy losses in the 2nd trimester, and meets other criteria, which again, makes it so the benefits outweigh the risks. So again, your doctor will be able to give you the best information about what they intend on doing for you during your pregnancy. I hope the very very best for you, and if I can answer any other questions for you in the future, please feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/IntermountainMoms.
This pisses me off because she says "recurrent 2nd trimester loss with the absence of labor or pain" yeah right. I gave birth at 21 weeks and 5 days because I have an incompetent cervix and it was as painful as full blown labor, with painful contractions and a physical birth. People assume that it is not labor or that it does not hurt if you are not farther along. That is not the case most of the time. It is actual labor, but I can understand the painless dilation that she had mentioned, that is true. Everyone's experiences are different but I just find it very ignorant that so many medical professionals think this is the case for everyone.
I lost my son at 23 weeks and I had silent dilation and painless contractions. I was just bleeding, went to the ER and did an ultrasound only to see the membranes bulging out. Only started feeling pain when my water broke.
Kristi Germain Look into a transabdominal cerclage. I had two second trimester losses before being properly diagnosed
Yes, maybe painless dilation initially due to the fact that the cervix can't hold the weight, that turns into full blown labor. I went on to have another child with many complications and of course CI. Almost lost that child too, at 23 weeks, my labor was stopped and emergency cerclage was placed. I had contractions the entire pregnancy. Even early on. Even with meds I was told that I have a very irritable uterus. I was miserable but with all that, pelvic rest, and bed rest we made it to 38 weeks 6 days.
I just lost 2 boys within 10 months apart. The first was last year at 18 weeks and the second just happened a couple of days ago at 16 weeks I didn't have no pain just bleeding. I only started to cramp and have contractions once they induced my contractions.
naturally_ shay I'm so sorry thishappened to you. Did they give you a preventative cerclage during your second pregnancy ?
I had a still birth at 21 weeks. Never knew I was dialting, no pain. Was diagnosed with incompetent cervix. My 2nd pregnancy I went 37 weeks with the stitch that I had placed in at 12 weeks
U had mcdonald cerclage??
Reeat ultrasound every 2 week
Were you on bed rest till delivery?

How was it when u got the stich removed
My first pregnancy was very complicated. I gave birth to twins at 25w5d due to an incompetent cervix. Babies spent 3 months in NICU. Now I am pregnant with my 3rd & my dr wants to have this procedure done. I appreciate your honesty in this video. ❤
Literally the least reassuring video I’ve ever watched about the procedure. I hope you don’t tell patients who need this procedure done (or face inevitable preterm labor or loss) that they’re facing “great risk” with that super concerned look on your face. Sheesh.
Yes I agree ,like having a loss of a child is easier than having the procedure .
She said in the beginning of her video “There is no easy way to answer the question…” I appreciate her honestly.
I have not suffered loss but I have experienced extreme preterm labor at 25w5d. My twins were in the hospital for almost 3 months. They were considered “micro-preemies.”
She said the truth. I prefer the truth than over promising
can I still have ic if I can feel contractions but no dialation ?
Is it safe to b on utregestan only without cerclage
How do you prevent infection after a cerclage
I got one done today, got a spinal and my back is KILLING me. (But I just got home an hour ago) But, I felt absolutely nothing during it. Just pressure but absolutely no pain
I know this is a year old post.
May I ask if the cerclage helped? Did you end up with a successful pregnancy? :-)
@@Mwanza8 I know your not asking me but if it helps. I have had 2 and both helped. I have 2 healthy kids at home 🙏🏼.
@@ivettemunoz1244 thank you so much for sharing. I'm scheduled for a vaginal cerclage in a few weeks. Gives me hope that it was a success for others ❤️
@@Mwanza8 it has definitely done the trick for me. I loss my first baby at 25 weeks due to incompetent cervix. And my second and third pregnancy I got cerclages and both full term babies no complications. I actually got my 3rd cerclage in today. It’s a little nervewrecking but it’s so worth it. It’s Definitely not as bad as it sounds. Wishing you the best of luck 🥰
@@ivettemunoz1244 praying for the best for you! And very uplifting it's working.
Problem is for me they aren't sure why I keep on having loses had 4 losses between 8-22 weeks. So hopefully IC is somewhat the cause so at least there's a remedy with the cerclage.
Thanks again for replying and all the best ❤️
I am just 5 weeks pregnant and my cervix is very low and open. My doctor said I was going to have a miscarriage but I feel that I am in the process and he does not want to scare me
ps/ first pregnancy
1st my cervix length was 3.9cms then later after with in 4days it has come come down to 2.96cms can i know the reason and its my 1st pregnancy
Preethi Goud Hello! It's Nurse Dani. Generally speaking, if the cervix begins thinning too early in pregnancy, it increases a woman's chances of preterm labor and delivery. We don't really know why this happens, but unfortunately, sometimes it does. It would be best for you to talk with your OB provider and share your concerns and questions with them. They'll be able to give you the best information based on their knowledge of your circumstances. I hope the very best for you and if you have more questions in the future for me, please feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/intermountainmoms.

im 26 week with cc at 16 week. i just want to know is watery discharge normal now with a cerclage.somebody plz help
Narjis Zahra that can be normal! Get tested to see if its amniotic fluid but I’ve heard of women with watery discharge after a cerclage. This is assuming you’re taking progesterone too.

Hi sana I saw your comments everywhere on cervical cerclage Videos..Hope your doing well..may God bless you with healthy baby
Hi how's you going now
Hi Sana,
How did it go ?
I lost 6 times my baby in 24 week due to cervix lenght 2.6 cm what can we do for a baby
Hi, hope everything went well.
Hello im hoping everything went well for you
What are the outcomes when you are pregnant after conization? I had a cold knife leaving me with 2.5cm cervix to start with. They can not put a cerclage because there is literally nothing to stitch. I'm 22 weeks, on strict bed rest and praying...
Ивана Степанов Свркота hi, we are in the same spot and our doctors suggest that we take this call to put cerclage or not(week 22, short cervix 23). What are the old if we dont put a cerclage that everything might turn out well? What happened in your case?
I had that procedure and they want to do cerclage but o don’t want to and had 3 preterm pregnancy 35 weeks born no cerclage I am against it
I'm getting a cerclage tomorrow after 1 loss after a 2nd opinion
How is everything
I was 27w3d. I have a incompetent cervix and I was also in preterm labor. I was to far along to get cerclage. They didn't know I had a incompetent cervic and preterm labor until I was 26 week thats when we found out. I had our son at 9:11pm and he weigh 1lb 14oz and 13in on May 5, 2023. On May 6, 2023 he passed away at 12 hours old. We are trying again. When I get pregnant again I will get a cerclage and progesterone pills.
Im not pregnant but i was told my cervix is 2.5 cm in length. How will this affect any future pregnancies i may have?
Destiny Teel I unfortunately gave birth to my daughter at 19 weeks 3 days due to incompetent cervix and at my 8 week check up I had an ultrasound that confirmed I have a short cervix. To answer your question, if you have any plans on becoming pregnant take it easy and tell your doctors about it and get them to keep an eye on you so you don’t suffer the same fate :(
Also if you need the cerclage get it done as early as possible. Not everyone makes it past 16 weeks
You will probably need a cerclage at 12-14 weeks and depending on it shortening or not maybe bed rest. I lost one baby at 21 weeks and didnt know my cervix was about 2.5 before pregnancy too and at 21 weeks it was .05 so my baby came. Now im 18 weeks with my second and had a cerclage at 13 weeks. So far everything looks good.

I know you are over this but for anyone with open cervix, get a good gynecologist who will place a stitch for you.
How are you now after the cerclage. How's the baby 🤱
Cerclage and doing bed rest can help to go fine with pergnancy and after doing carclage is it have pain and plzzzz tell me just 1 week I had misscarriage because of cervix opening and baby just come out at 22 week plzz tel me how long I should have to wait for next pergnancy again if women have this history plzzzzzz tell me
Hi Sana. I'm so sorry for your loss. I have been there before and I know how horrible it can be. I lost my first son at 26 weeks. My water began to leak at 24 weeks due to my incompetent cervix flexing. I was put on bed rest but I eventually gave birth to my son and lost him. Honestly, I know my doctor told me to wait at least 6 months but my husband and I didn't. We got pregnant about a month and a half after our loss. With that pregnancy my doc had me taking progesterone shots weekly, gave me a cerclage at 16 weeks (now he's doing them at 12 weeks), and he gave me a steroid shot to develop the baby's lungs toward the end of the pregnancy. My son is now nearly 4 years old. Anything is possible. I had 2 other losses after my son and am now 8 weeks pregnant waiting for my cerclage at 12 weeks. Hope this gives you a little hope.
