    Love your video and your empathetic approach! I can feel your pain with not counting the pieces!
    Even at Worlds there have been "unfortunate" puzzle choices. Most strikingly the Teams Finals 2022, where they had a very difficult 1000 piece and a brutal 1500 piece puzzle (with approx. 250 white and 400 solid color black pieces). Only one team out of 74 could finish - but of course all teams were ranked. Very similar with the Pairs Finals 2023 (Boston 2189), when only 9 teams out of 100 finished. Can be frustrating but it does not destroy the competition aspect as long as you count the pieces in the end and award a fair ranking...

    • @fortheloveofpuzzles
      @fortheloveofpuzzles  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Exactly! Imagine if at Worlds only that one team (I believe it was team Non-Stop) who finished in 2022 was ranked #1 and everyone else got a DNF (Did Not Finish) - no one would have showed up in 2023! And yes, tough puzzles make an appearance and competitions learns and change how things are run. I like that Pairs will only be 500 pieces for all rounds in 2024, including an extra elimination round. I preferred Boston 2189 to A Day in Paris. What about you?

      @@fortheloveofpuzzles I really love the puzzles "Boston 2189" and "Berlin at Night" (our Group A puzzle) - I have rebuilt both already. Will not buy "A Day in Paris" but might try it if it happens to land on my table via some swap. I am very slow at solid colours...

      I loved meeting everyone and am glad that we had some fun "non-competitive" puzzling time together - that was the best. 9 hours is just too long! I do think a lot of people had fun meeting others and puzzling for fun as well. And I think people did enjoy puzzling with their team - but I don't think anyone expected the puzzles to be this difficult.

    That is a really tough event! Your recap reminded me a LOT of the last couple of speed competitions we've had in Melbourne - the State comp and the Jigsaw Puzzle for a Cause. (Thomas Kinkade broke me). I left both events super deflated because they seemed to choose dry and difficult images that don't seem to be in the spirit of the speed run. But then again, there were people who completed them in good times, so I question myself. Good for you for supporting everyone!

    • @fortheloveofpuzzles
      @fortheloveofpuzzles  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Oh Thomas Kinkade images - tough!!! Sorry you felt deflated - I know the feeling! That would be difficult for me also. The thing is, you will get some competitions with easier images and others with more difficult ones. But at least count everyone's pieces because then, you may realise that you did a lot better than you thought. After you were ranked, did you feel better about how you did at the competition? I have the individual Thomas Kinkade that was used at one of the competitions and I will eventually give it a go. Not sure how well I will do either - tough images to speed puzzle. *hugs*

    Seeing this three months after the fact, but am a bit outraged at the exclusivity in thinking that allowed for a 9 hour time cap on one of the events. In a "sport" that is perhaps more accessible than many for those of us with health and or/mobility issues - this disallows anyone in a wheelchair, pregnant, diabetic or with a myriad other health concerns. I did some googling and see that NZ has a comp coming up in July with rules akin to the Worlds, and with Ravensburger puzzles, so hopefully it will be a lot more fun - and accessible.

      You make such a good and valid point - this was not made to be an accessible event. It was discouraging to receive a Did Not Finish and expecting people to be able to puzzle for that long and complete the puzzle in time was unrealistic. I am excited for the July event which is being put on by the NZ Jigsaw Puzzle Association. They are puzzlers, they are speed puzzlers and they know how things should be run. I will be there with Alison and we are so excited to be going the first NZ national event.

    I understand wanting to use a local brand for a competition, but when the quality is bad, they really should have picked a different one. It might be fine for the price and if you are just puzzling at your own speed, but so many false fits for a competition 😬... And with those images 😬😬... And 1000 pieces for an individuel competition 😬😬😬... And not having a plan for what to do if there is missing pieces 🙄.... But all that I think I could have forgiven if they had counted the pieces at the end. It's so crazy that they didn't do that 😵‍💫. It really means that if you can see that you won't be able to finish, then you might as well stop. I also think I would have walked out at some point if it was me! It's quite obvious that the orginaisers have never speed puzzled before, perhaps never puzzled... That, or they don't want any to sign up next year 😆.
    I also don't think I have ever seen a puzzle box that covered such big a section of the image, it crazy to use that for a competition 🙄. But it sounds like there were some volunteers that really tried to make the best of it 👏.

      @@darrylbatchem8985 I have no idea why they only have 20 spots. Limited by the number of tables??

    Those puzzles are terrible ! Can't believe anyone would buy them. Well done to everyone who took part. It sounds like NZ should follow World rules to ensure equity. 🌍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🌍

      Hopefully they will make some changes and start using these standard rules as well as I think it could be an amazing fun competition.

      Of all the puzzles they could have given us, they found the least colourful ones indeed!

    I just received a 500 piece wooden jigsaw puzzle 🧩. Yes, it is made of wood 🪵 and they are mosaic shapes. The pieces are really thick and I think the pieces looked laser-cut; I don’t know for sure if they are cut. Very super-thick pieces to my surprise 🎉. The title is family vacation. I couldn’t resist the jigsaw puzzle 🧩 image. I’m glad you had a very exciting time at your home 🏡 country jigsaw puzzle 🧩 competition. Were you flustered 😫 and nervous 😬 on winning 1st place 🥇? Silly 🙃 to say: you acted like someone in a fast-paced burger 🍔 place and a mistake-free food. Congrats 🎉 on your jigsaw puzzles 🧩 and the fun you had. I already ate my dinner 🥘. I ate a steak 🥩 and cheese 🧀 with peppers 🌶️ and a nacho crust. It was delicious 😋 and spicy 🌶️. You really don’t want to eat what I had IF you had the victory ✌️ to eat it. Keep up with your land or should I say: jigsaw puzzle 🧩 universes! If you see an alien 👽, invite him! Happy Valentine’s Day and I hope you got a heart ❤️ shaped box 📦 of chocolates 🍫 from someone that loves you!😍
