  • A quick drone flight out to this historic lighthouse. This was shot on my Mavic 2 Pro in the wintertime when no nesting seabirds were present.

I saw the video "Resolute" today and just loved the FOGHORN effect. The first blast grabbed my attention with instant memories of being in "my room" on Tillamook Rock in 1954 about midnight and hearing the Foghorn for the first time. After about 15 minutes I was aware of the hypnotic effect the horn was having on me, it was peaceful, and relaxing and I went sound asleep only to awaken about daybreak with a feeling something was missing, ...then I realized the fog had lifted and the horn was turned off. So many memories, so long ago.

Geist View has some nice videos. He and I have collaborated on some good places to fly. Here is one of my favorite videos of his: czcams.com/video/JQ2dfW52X2w/video.html
The part at 2:33 is really cool, and a little more risk than I normally put my drone in, but I guess that's part of what makes it cool!
(I'm actually Tim McGee, who posted this video. I just noticed I commented from my other account.)

Awesome stuff. I am headed that way next week and want to shoot this. How are the rules/regulations? I saw you "can't" fly drones in the state park due to "nesting birds". Any tips would be appreciated. I have shot a bunch of lighthouses around Lake Michigan and want to add this one to my personal collection.

Hi Robert, thanks! There are some rules. The rocks are national wildlife refuges and you are not supposed to get within 500' by boat, helicopter, drone, etc. due to the nesting sea birds. Interpreting the "spirit" of the law, I shot this in December when the birds were all long gone. I was concerned about bothering the sea lions, but looking through all the video I shot there, none of them ever seemed to be aware of it. I imagine the sound of the waves and their barking drowns out the drone, or maybe they just don't care.
Doing this in December was a little tricky. I needed a day without too much wind, no rain, and maybe even some sunlight! I don't live there, but got lucky while we were visiting and got a good day. There is a great vantage point to fly from. Park at the Indian Beach Day Use area and hike up the Clatsop Loop Trail. You'll come to a small opening with a cable safety barrier high on the ridge here: goo.gl/maps/zQvJBVc62UV516BM8 It's a ways up there and can be a little muddy, so hiking boots are in order.
This is about the closest point to the lighthouse, but it's still over a mile out to it. I flew out in normal mode to save battery (over sport mode), but even at that you don't have a lot time to waste once you get there. The wind usually blows toward shore, so you should need less battery to get back than you did to get out there. Plan your shots ahead of time. I was able to get a few videos flying around and over the lighthouse, then flew back out with a fresh battery to get some photos.
When you come back to land, depending on what drone you have, you might have to disable obstacle avoidance to get the drone back into the opening. I shot this with a Mavic 2 Pro, and was able to come in the last few yards sideways to keep the OA from hindering my landing.
Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Hi Mike, I've been pretty busy since we got back to town, but I was finally able to upload this video to AirVuz. Of course I had to hang around and watch a bunch of them, too! Great site. Thanks again for the invite!

Rough translation: "Who built the lighthouse?"
The United States Congress ordered and paid for the project. It was actually built by 8 quarrymen.
If anyone speaks Turkish and can translate this answer, please do!

This is beautiful. Please consider uploading this to the AirVuz drone video sharing site. We have a curated collection of drone videos of famous lighthouses and we'd love to be able to feature this in the collection. Just send me a reply if you have any trouble finding it and I can send you a link to the collection page. SUBSCRIBED

Hi Mike, thanks for the comment! I checked out AirVuz - very cool site! I will upload this video there. I also have video of Yaquina Head and Heceta Head that I have not processed yet. I might make a short compilation that includes all three. When I do, I will upload there, as well.
