A delicate portrait of Sussex based painter/designer Sophia Gray (sophiagraydesigns.co.uk).
Shot with a custom inverted / vertical anamorphic setup - Aivascope 1.5x (Inverted) paired with a vintage 1940s Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 58mm (17 blades!) and a Soviet 1950s Jupiter-9 85mm.
The delivery aspect ratio is somewhat unusual in 1.25:1 - so to have minimal crop from original shooting aspect after the anamorphic vertical stretch.

Thanks a lot :)
Lovely

Thanks very much!
Dude this is awesome. You deserve more views. Dear algorithm, show me more like this. I would love to see a video about the rig and your thought process behind the lens choices, framing, color grading, film emulation, inspiration, etc. Love the dreamy memory on film vibe. Time to go explore crazy lenses. Keep it up. 👌 I wonder if I could pull off a look like this with my BMPCC OG with its 16mm sensor crop factor. Thoughts?
Aww thank you so much for the kind compliments! I reckon you'd be able to recreate the look with the BMPCC OG fairly closely. There're quite a few fantastic vintage c-mount cine lenses that have tons of character and they're designed for 16mm film.
holy this lens is nuts.
Yes it's indeed full of characters compared to a lot of modern lenses!
@@kennyektar id love to watch a vid where u explain the entire process of getting it built!
How did you got this grading? Sooo amazing, the colours are too good. Premiere oder Davinci?
Thank you! It was done in Davinci Resolve
the circular bokeh!!!
Amazingly pleasing cinematic film look!!!
Wonder your choice of camera, picture profile. I see dozens of creators coming here to watch your color grading tutorials on this project, as it is rear and hard to achieve like GAWX😁
Thanks very much! I shot this on the A7Siii in SLog3. I really enjoyed doing the grading on this one almost as much as doing the actual shoot 😁
Holy field curvature batman!
That shot at 1:02 is unbelievable
Thanks very much!
Incredible! Would love to sneak peak at your grading node tree
Thanks very much! My resolve node tree of this project is actually super convoluted and very messy! 😆
@@kennyektar can I ask if and how you approach color density?
@@NikHem343 I haven't put a lot of thoughts into colour density. But I do generally try to desaturate shadow areas, and not let saturated colours become too bright etc.
@@kennyektar thanks, appreciate it!
Stunning!. Which camera!
Thanks! It was shot on an A7Siii
@@kennyektar can use this camera for film festivals movies?
Love it, Kenny. What camera may I ask?
Thanks! It was the Sony A7S3
can you break down the gears and the process of this film making? this is so good
Thanks! The main gears are A7Siii, Biotar 58mm, a Jupiter-9 85mm, and Aivascope 1.5x. In terms of the process, I just sketched out a few shot ideas, researched a few potential locations, and then just went out and shoot multiple angles and takes. It was fun and we're glad how it turned out
@@kennyektar Amazing! waiting for future videos
dope
Thank you!
Dude this is beautiful. Were the opening shots with the 58mm or the 85mm?
Thanks! Those were shot with the 58mm
Man, I’ve watched this video so many times. I feel an urge to make art now.
Thank you!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it! I'm glad the video inspired in some way :)
Hey man!
Can I ask how did you monitor it.
And what editing program did you use to get the crop out?
Thank you love it man!
Thanks a lot! I used a Freeworld Lut6s which kind of works but the de-squeeze value is not exact. I believe all the newer SmallHD ones have the vertical de-squeeze function.
I use Davinci Resolve for all my editing and colour grading
This grade is so beautiful? Do you film in log and grade? So curious how the coloring happened
Thank you! Yes, I did film in log - then I colour space transformed in Resolve and graded there. Also did some finishing refinements and added grain in Dehancer.
@@kennyektar did you use any LUT or power grade? would love to see your node - can you shoot me a dm @andrews_life ?
Amazing!
What camera did you use tho?
Thanks! It's an A7Siii
Nice acting.
Subbed
Thanks very much!
Sweet as honey
Thanks very much!
Thanks to algorithm
Haha thanks very much!
Could you share in a video how did you manage to pull this off? Equipment-wise
Beautiful, was this 2 lenses with one rotated 90 degrees? And was the camera also rotated?
Thanks! Only the anamorphic adapter in front is rotated 90 degrees.
@@kennyektarHow did it perform when in was mounted in its original configuration, was there vignetting?
@@user-dd1mk1qw8k You can check out my other video where it has a few shots with it mounted in its original configuration: czcams.com/video/w9HamVEkEG8/video.html&ab_channel=kennyip There's no vignetting on full frame when using focal length of 50mm and above.
@@kennyektar Thankyou, that video mentions it’s the Pentax Takumar & Lomography Petzval. I was specifically curious about the Zeiss Biotar, do you have a video for that lens in aviascope correct orientation?
@@user-dd1mk1qw8kAh I see! Sorry I don't have any Biotar + Aivascope in "correct" orientation footage at the moment. Will definitely upload some here whenever I managed to shoot something in that configuration :)
Damn
This is really amazing buddy ! Do you have the possibility to de-squeeze it on a monitor ? Any kind of monitor that could handle vertical de-squeeze ?
Thanks very much! I used a Freeworld Lut6s which kind of works but the de-squeeze value is not exact. I believe all the newer SmallHD ones have the vertical de-squeeze function.
@@kennyektar Oh thank you ! Do you think that it could be something great to do with Cine Anamorphic Glass ? Like Blazar Remus 1.5x. Since it is PL mount i've heard that it could be just as easy to just mount it vertically ?
@@thenotoriousmma974 I haven't used the Blazer Remus, but I'd imagine with PL mount lens it'd be much easier to mount vertically than an adapter like the Aivascope.
@@kennyektar I was wondering, does it mean that it flares with vertical streaks too ? I don't know how much this could be annoying on the image
@@thenotoriousmma974Yes the flare would be vertical when rotating the anamorphic block 90 degrees. I personally like that but I guess not everyone does - hence some would op for rotating the whole rig/sensor instead.
do you have the camera rig somewhere for viewing?
Yes, I've posted my rig onto the Facebook group "Anamorphic Shooters". It's a great community if you haven't joined already
Amazing. Beautiful. If you ever want to sell your Avi, let me know!
Thanks very much! Ah yes for sure :)
How much saturation did you boost up for this vintage lens? I just came from taking pictures of a friend at a park at 9 AM today and they’re all washed out. Maybe it’s because it’s taken from a 15 years old CCD sensor and shot on jpeg. I’m not sure what makes my images look so vibrant in one day and washed out the next day.
For the Zeiss Biotar I didn't have to boost the saturation a lot. Though for Jupiter-9 I had to push it quite far to match the other shots. I think it really depends on the lens coating quality and how well it renders the colours. Of course the sensor plays a big role as that kind of dictates how much you're able to push in post before it breaks down.
How does one invert it if I may ask? Do you purchase it or was it a custom build?
It's kind of a custom built as I rotated the anamorphic unit 90 degrees, so the anamorphic stretch is inverted.
hi! what did you use for the custom build? i want to use a anamorphic adaptor with my leica R lenses and rotate it but im not sure how
Which camera did you shoot this on?
It was shot on an A7Siii
What camera is this?
A7SIII
How did you solve the monitoring?
I monitored with a Freeworld Lut6s which kind of works but the de-squeeze value is not exact. I believe all the newer SmallHD ones have the vertical de-squeeze function
How did they get the blur on the edges?
Do you mean the compression blur on the frame edges? That's a combination of from biotar character and vertical anamorphic :)
Witch camera ?
A7Siii
What song you use?
wowww what camera ?
it was shot on an A7Siii
Which version is this Amber or violet?
It's the amber version
uh wow! - sooo camera is vertical and squeeze is horizontal? interesting as
The orientation of camera is normal and the anamorphic element is rotated 90 degrees
@@kennyektar oooh thats a bit of fun! will have a try - thanks for the great vid
What is an Aviascope?
And what exact Biotat had you used?
It's an anamorphic adapter (more info here: aivascope.ecwid.com)
I use the silver 17 blade version of the Biotar.
