High 5 Habit: amzn.to/3fMvfPQ
The 5 Second Rule: amzn.to/3372Rl9
Not me watching this at 12:25 am on my phone in bed on a work night after I just left all the sudsy dishes in the sink 🙈
My mom & dad set good examples for 6 children, we ALL pitched in , everything was clean & in order before bed or t v. Im so thankful for good teaching by their example. So, set a good example as best you can.
Yup, go to bed at 9:30 pm despite the antisocial comments from my spouse...sorry but sitting watching TV is not couple quality time...not to me. Mel, you should (if you haven't) do a video about how to get your spouse on board with healthier habits, because that's hard..
You're an early bird, clearly. I feel for your husband if he's not, since night owls are always treated like outliers. Early birds say, "you're missing the best part of the day!" even though they miss the best part of the night. One can absolutely have a solid night routine without turning in before it's even dark.
Best Evening Routine:
Step 1 - Clean up the dinner mess
Step 2 - 5 minutes to set up for success (set yourself up for the next day)
Step 3 - 5 minutes for yourself (do something that makes you feel good/restorative)
Step 4 - Tuck phone away (another room is likely the best option)
You’re holding up a mirror to myself, I know i can do better, once again thank you for elevating my life another notch!
Mel don't know whether to laugh or cry, literally had this conversation with myself this morning. That has been my pattern even though my resolution was to change.
Same went to bed at 2 am!!! This was after having wine which I didn’t plan to have…. I’ve woken with a headache and my plans for today and exercise is out the window!!! ❤
lol it happens
lol how funny! Nothing like waking in the morning and having a sink full of dishes 😂
I wish there was a video like this speaking to young adults. My 19 year old has the worst bedtime habits 🥴😭
Literally sitting here at midnight watching this, while looking at the to do list of things I didn't do.
I don’t have a house phone so what I do is turn off all sounds except only two noises- when my sons call me. Then I put it in the drawer next to my bed. I never think about it nor look at it but I know if there’s an emergency my sons can call me. Reading a book for 30 to an hour before I go to sleep really helps me get tired and helps me keep caught up on my reading (not news though).
The dishes thing has been game changing for me especially as my home office is in my kitchen as well
Not watching at 2 AM, lol. Everyone loves Mel bc everyone listens, thinking, yes.
Haha! So true. I woke up a few months ago heaving dreamt about a red handbag. It was so real I scoured my amazon account for digital footprints. What a relief - until a week later I found out my eBay bid on a red bag ( the same style as three others I own) had been successful and here it is. That was such a wake up moment for me. Reinforced a week later when a matching purse arrived! To this day I have no memory of seeing or ordering that. So funny I cried 😅😢
Omg I followed your advice on some points last night and it definitely helped ... bar two things. Prepped lunch boxes last night ✔️, went to bed early ✔️. This morning had a good laugh at dishes in murky mucky cold water. And overslept after I didn't hear my alarm 🙃 lord . You my daily dose of calm . Thank you
This podcast really spoke to me. After watching your what alcohol does to us I made the decision not to have a drink tonight. It is a start. I love to clean up the kitchen right after dinner. To me it is like making my bed first thing each morning. I set the intension for the day and now am trying to set the intension for the evening. This week I began Tackle it Tuesday. Tuesdays are going to to be my paperwork day. No excuses.
So true so true so true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you from South of France
This is so me! I have processing my crappy nightly routine to myself and asking myself why i cant get anything done. And wonder why i cant get anything done. My adhd + poor routines = compounded daily failure.
Ugh! Thanks for articulating this!
You are so lovely and always have such beautiful examples and intentions 💕 Thank you Mel 😇 we have 9 cats we rescued...in the evening they may run free once it becomes dark outside... that means I wait until they all inside..safe and sound 🌸 otherwise I cannot sleep... so I became a cat myself..and my sleep routine is so different nowadays 🙄🐈🌸😇
This is me exactly, and I don't want to continue practicing this behaviour. I've started the 5 second rule and not hitting the snooze. Getting up the same time every morning helps alot to have a better day and take a little edge of my stress, anxiety and saboteur voices in my head.
Interesting perspective, Mel.
This January I made the New Year’s Resolution to not sit down until the dishwasher was going and handwash items on the rack. It has worked so well, I started making my list for the next day. I was just thinking, I should do something about that phone. I wake up to my Fitbit and have a charging station in the kitchen. I’m going to tuck it in there. And yes I haven’t missed a day since New Years. If I can do it, everyone can!
Just doing the dishes, while listening....❤
Thank you so much. Makes a lot of sense. Such little things done in a different order can make or break your next day.
Just a side note about phones. Unfortunately, it is not always realistic unfortunately to not have your phone near you. I have a friend who woke up with a stranger coming down her hallway a few month ago, but her phone was in the living room because it was not good for sleep to have it near her. I just wanted to mention that, but also wanted to say thank you for all of your encouraging videos. They really do help and help me to "reset".
Was your friend okay??
Physically yes...she was able to bargain down what happened physically. This was someone relatively new to this type of.....crime. And she also managed to make a run for it out of the house. He was recently caught when arrested for something else. But emotionally it has been a tough several months. And her house is a fortress now. Not comparing it. But it has also affected the friends that live nearby as we used to feel relatively "safe". Thank you for asking@@rhyfeddu
What happened to your friend?
I thought I had replied to the previous person who asked...not sure what happened. She woke up with a stranger coming down her hallway. She survived physically. But it has been hard emotionally. This is a strong person.....of course this would affect anyone. There was an attack. But she thinks the person was new to this because there was some hesitancy. And she remained calm and talked about herself in trying to make herself a real person to this monster. Then took an unexpected opportunity to escape. Anyway her house is now like Fort Know. And obviously not in the same way...but it has affected her friends too in now feeling even more unsafe.@@Kellendras1
How frightening to be confronted like that
Thank you Thank you Mel, for the inspiring advice to help me improve my night routine. 😊🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤❤💜💜
Great perspective thank you .
How about this: set the table for a 9:58 nice breakfast . Grind the coffee before bed 🛌 so you don’t have make a lot of noise in the morning. Use a pretty cup. A flower 🌸 in a vase. A candle 🕯️ lit before the sun gets up.
Mel, I live in a rotted trailer, and I don't even want to get out of bed in the morning & deal with my life.
Going to sleep has been hard, cause I'm constantly in a state of trying solve the answers to issues.
We have to go and get water from an outside source, cause the trailer wasn't properly connected to the well.
So, it's been 50/50 on getting chores done regularly. And then other days, I feel like why do I bother?
I feel like if your in a unique life situation, there are days that are a lot harder than others.
So, at that point, it's important that you don't seek perfection but seeking growth & improvement.
I’m not surprised, I would be struggling so much with those issues. I think if you are managing 50% of the daily chores, then you can call that a win. It is a win and you are an amazing person to me.
Can I suggest that you write down the problems you are trying to solve and then put the paper under your pillow? Your subconscious will come up with something, but you need to sleep. Sending love and admiration across the pond. X
I used to leave the dishes in the sink all the time, but then my dishwasher broke down about 6 months ago and we couldn't get it replaced so I had to start washing dishes by hand. I found out pretty quickly that I had to wash them while cooking and right after we ate to keep up with all the dishes from our family of 5. I honestly feel like a dishwasher now. We're luckily able to get a new dishwasher next month and I can't wait! My back is sore and my hands are chapped! But I've picked up a good habit.
As for the phone, I deleted all my unnecessary apps, games, and social media from my phone. I use it as a timer to keep me on track (I have ADHD) and it will tell me what I need to do next (I don't have alexa or anything like that, so I need my phone). So I keep it at my bedside so it can tell me to take my meds when I wake up. Unfortunately, I'm so not addicted to my phone, I will often forget it on the charger beside my bed for the entire day and miss phone calls because I have it switched to silent mode.
I'm currently watching this on my TV in the middle of the living room, because that's how we set up our internet. If anyone wants to use the net, they have to do it on a 40 inch tv.
And now my phone is telling me to turn off all screens and get ready for bed, so good night, I'm off to have a nice warm shower.
I just love you so much! Your words and wisdom are so inspiring!
I've watched this before and am currently working on my morning and evening routine, before I start working on myself with some long overdue therapy. However I'm back watching it and currently improving my notes so I have a refresh go to journal. I did the old me last night ran a bath and never got in it(I emptied it this morning), was watching TV later than planned fell asleep on the couch and woke at 5 am and went to my early am cold bed. Woke at 9:10 got up teeth, sip of water, medication taken late, two mouthfuls of yoghurt herbal tea and yeah I had to give in to my tea after an hour instead of the two hours I've managed the previous two day and a total hard start to my day. I'm still not dressed. But I am on the right track to a better evening tonight.thanks @mel robbins
Just washed up the dishes, programmed my coffee maker for 6:00 a.m tomorrow morning, and now I am watching Mel Robins videos
I was laughing so hard recognizing myself.
This is such EXCELLENT advice!! I tried it and it works!! You so wisely educate those of us who listen and learn. Thank you Mel Robbins!! I do however take my iPad to bed because that's when I am able to listen to your podcasts here on youtube. Listening to you has proven to be SO beneficial and educational to helping me make positive daily changes! Plus your delivery is the best!😀😀😀
Best things I found:
1) Quit most social media, and spend that time with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers
2) Set my phone's Do Not Disturb time two hours before bed time. My aspiration is to spend that time cleaning the kitchen, going for a walk, make tomorrow's lunch & prep coffee, read or play a boardgame with my family. I rarely do ALL of those things, but making progress!
Isk if I'm laughing or crying bc I'm the same way just wasting my hrs away just chilling out🙏pray for me
This totally makes sense! Setting up my morning routine should be easier now.
Thank you!!!!!
Give each room in your home 15 minutes of attention
Giving up drinking gave me my life back and everything else clicked into places but I am addicted to my phone. It is going to bed at 7pm from now on!
Hysterically funny...because it's true!
Omg! That’s what I’ve been doing! Thanks for the wake up call❤️❤️
Love this 😂. Totally agree
Thank you Mel
Wow! that is so true!
Luv this!!
The other thing I need to do is not drink on week nights. I need to manage anxiety another way.
Totally have got into this rut
Wow! You are great! I feel like you are reading my thoughts! Lol. Yes, I am laughing with you 😊
Hands down the best thing I’ve watched all year! The video I didn’t know I needed. Madam I need to hear more. Subscribing now!
Omg, that was me!!! I lived in a life of perpetual guilt
I’m going to do this !
love it ❣
Once in a while I do that, if I REALLY don’t want to do them !
Much better to get them done for the morning though, 100 % ❤✝️
Mel Robbins, You’re absolutely incredible! The world is a much better place because of you! My day is always better because of the inspiring, motivating and life changing wisdom that I learn from you and the many many other exceptional men and women your share with everyone on your life changing podcasts and social media platforms!
Blessings always and forever to you and your impactful and multi talented family.
Yep 💯
This is so true..x
First and foremost, I had to stop getting upset about the fact that I was still awake (or that I did this and that wrong etc) and punishing myself etc. Or getting stuck in a rumination loop such as “why can’t I ever get this right?” Nothing like anger and hopeless frustration to hype you up. Now my rituals revolve mostly around things like avoiding any emotional stimulation, (anger, excitement, anxiety, intrigue, etc), things that could turn into “getting too involved” (that would take more time), and anything to do with other human contact (Bcuz your emotions can get affected or you can get buzzy such as going into work mode etc).
There isn’t much worse than cold, nasty dishwater. Lol.
Getting into minimalism saved me. Tips like from Dana K White…”Just do the dishes.” Lol. And well, now there are a lot fewer dishes in the first place…for starters. Many other tips but added up they make for a much more “orderly” and manageable lifestyle. Most def my “winding down” rituals are sacred. Late at night, “boring” is actually a good thing.
I think it’s more of a boundary issue really. You push away all things contrary, Bcuz you must have quiet and space enough for the goal of getting some much needed rest.
A key point here for me is these good habits are not negotiable. You will gain benefits from them that will reenforce them.
Yes 👏🏻
Why is this so accurate???
I’m hearing you. ❤
Ew that water drives me NUTS my husband is a serial “soaker” and it’s so yuck. I just rinse them and leave them ha but honestly the day goes SO much better if the house has been cleaned up the night before. It’s hard with 2 small tornado boys but it’s worth it on the days it gets done.
I sleep next to my phone and so does my husband. We are in bed by 10:30 every night. Sleep straight through. We use them as our alarms. So while I agree for YOU it’s a bad idea, I’d suggest you make it more of a suggestion instead of passing it off as fact. Because it is in fact an individual problem
OMG Mel, the Hamster wheel I call it. The "fall asleep/WHAT?! it's morning" experience. I JUST WANT TO SLOW DOWN MY LIFE.
When closing dishes become morning dishes is the worst😂
i am watching this at 1:30 am. ;(( don’t worry i will changeee my lifeee
I struggle with these and the trouble I face comes from implementation of the steps discussed. So often I'm told well don't look at your phone before bed or do the dishes after you've cooked. Good advice but the problem is that once I've spent an hour in the kitchen cooking I want to be able to sit down for my evening meal and then relax. The dishes get left cos the thought of doing them now overwhelms me cos I don't enjoy it. The kid's batebox does not get done. That's a morning job I tell myself. At least this video gives steps, still with my mind I'll prob have so many other questions while implementing these changes pop up that I'll sabotage myself again.
Choose one thing to do in the evening, just one xxx
OMG it's 1:33 am!
❤❤❤❤❤
Have a mixed bag of good and bad bedtime habits. What does work for me is that my phone is set on sleep mode at 10. Now if I can just stop channel surfing when I know I should head to bed😟
Literally looked at the time when she said "It's Midnight!"....and guess what time it was?! 😮 12:00. Yep.
Oh my goodness, this is me!
Alcohol is a true way to destroy life
Hello @MelRobins, do the videos also come as podcasts? I'm better at listening than watching because I often only have time when I'm in the car, walking or working out. 🙂 Best wissen, Anke
I have a question, one that may sound completely stupid…
What do people do once they tuck their phones away before tucking themselves to into bed?
I’ve always been one to have something on in the background… over the past couple of months I’ve been using CZcams for either a meditation, podcast, music, something to help me get to sleep. Before we won’t go there but a common thing would have been to watch something on my phone / iPad (because I don’t want to have a tv in my room or else I’ll be up all night).
Any sort of suggestions that isn’t just turning off the light and “going to sleep”… that just won’t happen lol
I’m thinking of the “5 minutes to restore myself” would be used for journaling and those more self development / “spiritual” practices.
Good question! I can only think of reading and meditating/praying/thinking...
I've been reading in bed before I go to sleep. Just 1 chapter. On day 5 now and sleeping so much better, like real deep sleep. It's been good
❤ okay. Thank you. ❤
Need to buy an alarm clock! :)
Hi Mel, your videos are great.
Can you answer a question please?
- I'm learning English, when I listen to your speaking way, your topics and so on.
What English level Could I achive it ?
I mean:
- B-2?
- C-1?
Wich one do You think?
Why You didn't answer My former question?
🤯 @@sergiocuadra120
I love you! You are me!
I always do the wash up, but I completely see how people do this as they are mentally and physically tired. Prob need to get rid of the phone, but it plays sleep music and is upside down out of reach.
❤❤❤
So i think my phone knows that i did this last night 😂😂 i normally don’t then this video is calling me out so im gonna make sure i take care of it every night without fail from now on 🎉
This is me. No routine to my day except working 9 hrs a day. Working is my only routine. At night I an a zombie mentally, in the mornings scrolling until 7:00 am and then rush to get out the door. Weekends unless we have plans I sit on the couch all day scrolling on my phone and watch tv. Ugh!
That scenario is called having a family and trying to relax ,later...
It happens to level off AFTER the kids leave home....
Tell it like it is...😅
Didn’t realize Mel has been spying on me.
My phone sleeps in the kitchen. Every single day.
The highlight in the morning of the dish stack is the stinky, gross coloured water you tip away when you start sorting them in the morning!! When I write it I realise it makes no sense!!!! 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😂😂
Def resonates! Only thing though is - how do I set an alarm to wake up in the morning and how do I get to sleep bc I can't generally drop off without a sleep story on my app plus wake up in the night and need to use that to get back to sleep. Solution to this would be great?! Genuine question 😊
Investigate the bedtime settings on your ‘phone particularly in regards to the backlight or ambience settings. At the very least turn down your screen brightness an hour before bedtime, it’s still bright so maybe turn it face down? I use Calm and I can turn the screen off.
@@traceyrichardson9550 Thank you. I do turn down the brightness setting on my app 🥰I do also have Calm. All suggestions very welcome 😀Anything that can help us sleep deprived and anxious beings - all very welcome 😍
You really were spying on us! You know us SO well!!!!!
Bingo. I hate myself.
I listen to Mel because I am Mel…minus the success. 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Same!
I wouldn't mind tucking my phone in but a part of me is afraid I will miss an emergency call. I have kids, one who is a new adult, and elderly in-laws. I cant leave my phone in another room or turn it off.
Do i get a gold star?....no tv or phones in the bedroom however there is late night gaming while the dishes 'soak'
Hey… where is the hidden camera?
I HATE walking in on dirty dishes in the morning, so that’s what I always took care of. All others - guilty as charged…
00:33 Don't we do dishes in a cycle?
It’s like you can see me. 👀
An age old habit. Don't procrastinate!
Guys buy a dishwasher, and forget about washing dishes forever
Yes but you still have to load and unload it! Says me staring at my neatly piled dishes on the counter because I didn’t empty the dishwasher…. That’s what mornings are for😂😂😂
