  • In this video I share the installation process of fitting a rear view camera on our caravan. The camera I purchased is the HD version from Falcon technology, I bought the kit last year and also purchased the option of having it fitted locally.

    Absolutely agree that rear view camara is a must but not at that price. We bought a wireless camera that sits on the rear window ledge powered by a powerpack on the bed and takes about 1 min to set up or remove. HD quality, and compatible with the Swift factory fitted reversing cam monitor and sat nav. I think we paid £45 on Amazon. Our Van is an x835 so a long old beast but no issues with the camera connection in rear widow and monitor in the car.

    Not sure what the positives are of this? Trunking on the roof, exposed cabling, a stuck on camera, issues with using a cover. All for 600/800 quid? No thanks.

    Fitted similar to my van, best accessory I have purchased. But after two years I had to replace the camera due to water ingress !! And fitted a jack connector to the cable for removing when in storage. The problem was caused by a small rubber grommet that covered a switch used to invert the picture on the screen in the car either birds pecking or just deterioration in sunlight

    Dan I like the camera, potential theft in storage puts me off. Makes towing so much easier 👍

    Good share Dan. I’ve been frustrated by enormous mirrors on my 8ft wide Adria but visibility is both important and the law! I’ve spent a lot of time looking… can’t bring myself (just yet) to go the route you have purely because I’d need holes in the skin. I’ve looked at lots of wireless cameras to attach via silicone adhesives.. and a screen etc. but having spent £300 on an avtex satnav (8 ft caravan into 9 ft road is challenging) I’ve found it pairs with a Garmin removable camera. And shares it in screen, even when not reversing! So I think that’ll be my first proper approach; and yes I’ve heard people will pinch the camera; but if they can hang off their car at 60mph and take it they are welcome to try. I already know it’ll be unclipped when we stop. But thanks for showing me an alternate solution.

      Are you looking at the battery wireless Garmin camera? If so I tried it and sent back as the signal wouldn’t reach the car without an extender.

    Good video Dan, I do agree a rear camera is a very good safety idea. I’m still shocked it’s not common to have a high level brake light fitted as standard- been law (C&U regs) for cars/vans for years

      Ha, nope - still not 709, still 2020, just PQ version for this video as the cameras i used dont support HDR. (new ones do)
      HDR, will be more and more prominent on this channel as the year unfolds.

    Hi, I like the idea of it. Would you still need your extended mirrors? My only concern would be is the size of the screen! Might just be a trick of the photography but it looked massive. What size is it?

    If you have an older van then warranty issues don’t really come into it. So good idea. You mentioned a duel carriageway but this would be a better asset on Britains busy motorways.

    A rear view camera is a veryuseful asset. However we use a battery operated one, the mount cable tied to the rear handle and linked to a redundant mobile phone on the car dashboard. The camera battery lasts long enough for all journeys and the camera is easily removed from the mount for recharging in the evening. Works perfecrly and all fot £100!!,

    Still too many problems waiting to happen in my view. I had one like that installed on my Adria, nothing but problems getting it to work consistently. Parts couldn't cope with summer heat here in Australia. About time caravan manufactures build these options in as part of their build.

    Hi Dan, quite interested in a rear view Camera, like the idea of being able to see something behind me in the rear view "mirror" other than my towing cover. I wonder though, is the image right way round? If something pulls out to overtake, will it look like they are undertaking on the screen if you see what I mean?

    • @paulefc1971

  • @Judge_Dredd

    Wow, seems a bit of a faff, I bought my Garmin 780 Camper Sat Nav plus the cameras two years before we bought our first caravan, when we bought our 2008 Ace Celebration 620 I'd fitted the system within a week, also fitted a spare camera to my ERDE SY150 Trailer (Tiny! and an absolute nightmare to reverse without a camera as you can't see it at all in the car mirrors, and the stock reversing camera on the Avensis is offset, so even trying to use that is a total faff.
    The Wireless Cameras with the Garmin only need clipping into place and powering up via long life Lithium Batteries when you're towing, and you use the Sat Nav Voice Control to say 'Show Video' and 'Hide Video' when you need to take a look on the 7" Sat Nav Screen. As the Reversing Camera on the Avensis automatically switches on within the centre dash display, you have zero blind spots
    As the Wireless Cameras clip onto the Garmin number plate holder supplied with the camera, and the reversing lines and view are programmed for each camera in the Sat Nav Software, there's basically no installation, since you'll have to fit a new number plate to a 'new' caravan anyway.

    Any chance I could talk with the man who said he'd got an adria there a rare bread .I do like your camera think someone mentioned about no need for mirrors but that's illegal isn't it.

    • @davidlewins4631
      @davidlewins4631 Před 4 měsíci

      I think that was me? I didn't say you don't need extended mirrors but asked if they were necessary? It looks like you get a much better view from a well mounted camera. I suppose it is all about the interpretation of the regs. I am sure there are those who say it is OK & back up their claim with evidence & also those who say it is not & have equally good evidence!

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi, yes the number plate location would be excellent for a reversing camera, but not for an overall rear view camera. The number plate is really low on our 'van so it would show the grille of the car following and not alot else.

    For me its a no
    1. It spoils the look of the backend
    2. The price. (Yorkshires man)
    3. The trunking on the roof collecting the dirt
    Also the roof strap sealant looks like its got black mould on it already
    As we say no good all been the same but good video made my mind up not to bother
    Thanks Dan

    • @Harris_The_Cocker
      @Harris_The_Cocker Před 4 měsíci +2

      To be honest this day and age I don’t understand why the camera so big and ugly, it’s like a 1970’s mobile phone! Also agree with your comments about trunking across the top of the van. Currently I use a Garmin BC40 camera which pairs to my Garmin Camper SatNav. It sits on the top of the rear panel and looks like it’s factory fitted, Garmin also make a number plate mounting option for the camera. On the odd occasion I need rear view it’s voice activated and shows a good enough quality picture on the satnav screen to do the job. The camera batteries last me all year so just replace at the start of each caravan touring season. It’s not a full time HD viewing option but at just over £120 it’s an option if you already have an Garmin or Avtex caravan satnav.
