When I was young and live on a farm; two things were important to have; a $3 dollar Imperial Barlow and three dollar fifty cent pocket watch. The Barlow was for cutting hay bale string and cleaning squirrels, rabbits, pheasants and groundhogs. The watch was for making sure you didn’t miss supper. When someone said cheaper than a two dollar watch they weren’t kidding. They worked fine as long as you didn’t wind them to tight or dropped them. Bareheaded Barlow’s are like them. If you drop them on a hard cement floor and the scales hit first; likely the knife cover will crack or split sooner than later. Hardwood ones survive the best and I broke enough of them to figure this out. I just fixed one a couple days ago I had as a kid. I am betting ones that cost a lot more than $3 dollars still don’t fare well hitting cement any better. I like the ones with two blades. The pen blade is an apple peeling machine. Slip joint pocket knives have one very important advantage over all these pocket clip wonders. They let you have more choices of blades that work better than just one. You don’t need to carry a first aid kit to use them neither. My Grandmother taught me rule number one; for using a pocket knife. She said; boy you keep playing with that sharp knife and you are going to cut yourself. When I get done sewing you up; you are going to know I was telling you the truth. I watch a lot of reviews of modern knives; I also see a lot of bandaids on the fingers of these blade flicking wizards too. I believe my Granny was right.

I was able to get my hands on one of these Barlows last year before Christmas. I am so pleased with the quality. It came hair popping sharp right out of the box......very tight back spring, which I love in a slipjoint knife......and the blade is even centered. Just pure excellence for not a lot of money. If I'd known it was going to be so good, I'd have gotten several of them. Now I can't find any of them. Everybody I search is sold out.

I picked up one of these on eBay. It is one of my favorite knives. I nicknamed it "Mr Snappy" because it has the most solid stops I've ever experienced. It's actually kind of scary. It's a knife that you respect enough to not take for granted. It feels like it could bite! There's a really strong personality to this knife. I love it. It is a hardworking tool for sure. No gap on mine. I oiled and waxed mine and the handle didn't darken down. I like this knife better than fancier ones.

I got mine this week, I wish I'd found it earlier. This thing is the best value for money knife I have bought in a while, and it's British! I love it! The only problem is it's got me looking at the more premium versions with covetous eyes now.

I tidied up the rough and bee's waxed the covers. With the strength of the back spring I have no worries whittling and carving with it. Whatever the steel is, it stays sharp and only needs the odd strop!
Thinking of getting the two bladed Barlow, stainless with black resin covers at around £40.

I just got this same knife in the mail yesterday and I have to say my enthusiasm isn't the same as yours. It was listed for $55 USD so with shipping from the UK cost about $70 and I have to say I am disappointed. This thing has more problems then the $19 queen I got from smkw and it had so many problems that I got rid of it. First off the finish work is terrible. The bevels on the covers look like a little kid sanded them on. The bevels on the bolsters are wonky. The grind on the blade is like 40 grit. The liners are not ground flat and have wavy areas that cause gaps. The spring sits out of flush in the half stop at least 1mm. There's a pin holding on the cover that wasn't peened on the inside and just sticks out inside the knife. There's a big gap between the blade and where the blade hits the spring when open. I can go on and on. It's terrible. I got a nice boker tree brand trapper for the same price with 0 gapping. How can you peddle this garbage and feel good about it honestly.

Just received mine from James and Company. Do not buy this knife sight unseen. The box look like it had been pre-opened. I suspect it was a return because the fit and finish was absolutely terrible. Major gapping on the liners and blade was rubbing against the liner when it was closed. Don't believe I can return it. It's trash

I've got a couple. They benefit from a few minutes of work - smoothing the handle with some finishing paper and oil and rounding metal edges with a diamond file. The underlying knife is solid though. So it's worth a little time

Hi Paddy. Thanks for your review. You paid £23 from Amazon for yours. Hmmm. I paid £30 for mine (bought last week) from Farrar & Tanner. Am I upset? Not a bit of it. I paid an additional £5 to have my name inscribed on the blade. It looks wonderful! They did a fantastic job and the service was great. And no, I do not work for them.
Rather, I work on a farm. This is the best knife I have used in a long time (and I have used quite a few). The beauty of it is this: It is legal carry and folding, but my God, this - given the back spring - might as well be a fixed blade. Just the way I like it. More than that, if I wanted a knife to castrate a gnat, this is the one I would choose. It really is that sharp. Not that I have castrated a gnat today (it being a Wednesday).
I used Danish Oil on the wood and it worked a treat.
    Keep up the excellent reviews.
