    I've driven the M2 with the Cat C7 and MBE engines, and they were both so much nicer than the equivalent International 4300 trucks. The Freightliner drives more like a car, whereas the International feels every bit like a big truck.

    I drive one just like this one as well. Mine is a 2016. It has a Cummins engine in it. I don't know which one though. I've yet to find any kind of labels under the hood. How can I find out which Cummins engine is in it ? It has a handle shift on the dash for the transmission. I presume it's an Allison. How many gears would this truck have ? The shifter doesn't say.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 4 lety

      It is most likely the 6.7L Cummins. But you can find it either by looking at the while label on the very top of the engine on the valve cover. Or sometimes they put it on the build sheet on the passenger sun visor. It would be a 6 speed if its unlocked.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 7 lety

      I though that was only for Hydraulic brakes and the smaller Allison transmissions? I din't think that they had a gear shifter that would apply an air parking break.

    • @electricitymachine6401
      @electricitymachine6401 Před 7 lety

      Yea, I think it was for the smaller ones. I always like to have it manually apply my PBrake, but I have to have air brakes. They're a lot safer and nicer.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 7 lety +1

      Yes, air brakes are much safer. But they are a more expensive option. When you see "Park" on a gear shifter it is just a park pawl within the transmission that keeps the vehicle from moving vs. an air brake vehicle such as this which locks up all the brakes.

    Penn State's student farm has a fleet of trucks including two army-owned Freightliner Classic's with Cummins engines and Allison auto transmissions. I'd like to get behind the wheel of one. They're mainly just used for pulling trailers to and from the fields but it would be really cool to drive one as a student. They also have a few Macks, Internationals, and a Ford LTL9000 dump truck I want to drive.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 7 lety

      The Freightliner M2 106 and the Kenworth T800 are my top two choices for trucks, love the designs. A Cummins and an Allison is always a perfect combo. This is the best driving truck I have driven. The emissions stuff doesn't even hinder the performance. This thing accelerates like a bat out of hell, and turbo barked every time I let off the accelerator. I would try to get to drive one those your talking about, if you have never driven anything this big its a pretty neat experience. My next truck I am going to try to get next is a Hino 268.

      carmas54 carmas54 The rear axle ratio is 5.22, It's a 6 speed Allison HS with 4th gear being 1:1 with 5th and 6th being overdrive. I got 11mpg with mostly city driving.One of the best trucks I have driven. Thanks for watching!

    • @carmas54
      @carmas54 Před 7 lety

      is that what Allison considers double overdrive, 11 around town is great, I wonder what Why MPG's would be. The cab is very quite, you don't have that high winding noise that you hear out of the International I'm considering a IH 7300 with a cummings 6.7 or bigger with a 3000 series Allison trans, I have yet to see anybody do a YT video of them driving a IH. thanks

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 7 lety +1

      carmas54 The 2 overdrive ratios are pretty close. I was shocked when I went to fill up and couldn't get anymore fuel in the tanks. I have multiple videos of driving an IH 4300 Durastar with the MaxxForce DT, one with an Allison and another with an Eaton Fuller Ultra shift . Which is this trucks competition.I have yet to get ahold of an IH with a Cummins 6.7. But the one with the DT was horrible to drive. I honestly think I could run faster than it could accelerate. Cab noise just from the engine was obnoxious, the DT has this loud annoying valve clicking noise anytime you touch the throttle.

    +Crazyjdkid Awsome Video ! Thank You for sharing. I have a question for you Where you able to drive that truck with a Class D license? Does Ryder have any requirements to drive a truck similar to yours ?
    -Charlie F

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 7 lety

      I am not sure what is considered a class D license in your state, but anyone with a regular license you would drive a car with can rent and drive the truck in the video. Ryder requires you to have proof of full insurance or you have to buy theirs. No need for an air brake endorsement because the truck is derated 1lb below the legal limit and I used the truck non commercially (Most of Penske is hydraulic) Ryder and Penske will rent to anyone 18 and older, Enterprise requires you to be 21.But be for warned, if you have never driven anything of this size it has a dangerous learning curve of close calls. They are on semi chassis and drive like them, you practically can't see anything but what's ahead of you. Thanks for watching!

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 7 lety

      I sort of want to clarify of something I mentioned earlier. This truck is CDL rated, but only needs a CDL license if you are using it commercially. I was using it residentially for myself, so I was exempt. This truck is rated over 26,000lbs (its at 27.5k),has airbrakes and a DOT number. So if you were renting it while working for a company or plan to make money with the truck you would have to have a Class B with airbrake endorsement. Kind of a silly loop hole, but not all states allow it.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 3 lety

      Yes, there are tons of transmissions available for these. The push button is going to be the more heavy duty 3000 series Allison transmission. The one in this truck is the 2500, which is a mechanical shift lever. You may also an Eaton Automated Manual, it has a paddle mounted to the steering column.

      @@crazyjdkid is the 2500 still w strong transmission? Say in a dump truck application with a m2 106 under cdl truck, is a 3000 series that much better than a 2000 or just stronger?

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 3 lety

      The only really difference between the 2000s series is the gearing. The 3000 is rated for a much larger torque input, so it can handle larger engines. You will mostly find the 3000 in larger diesel pusher school buses and RVs. The 3000 is going to handle larger loads much better over an extended period of time. It your doing a bunch of towing or have some slopes, the 3000 would hold up best. It is kind of the gold standard.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  Před 5 lety

      Well to be fair both Freightliner and International come with the engine and transmission options that the equivalent Peterbuilt would. Remember much of the Paccar engines are rebadged Cummins. There is also a major price difference between truck! What it comes down to in the end is usually personal preference. Thanks for watching!

    • @erikbreaman9124

      @@crazyjdkid Couldn't agree more on the price/value difference. It's why I would probably get a International or Freightliner if I was tight on money. I learned to drive in a International cab-over(one of the best looking trucks I've ever got to drive) and later drove a lot of 8 and 10 speed Eaton Freighliners in yard switching and OTR.
      Paccar is partially Cummins(use to be Cat clones). The ECM, DPF, and some block level stuff are different. In the semi world this is made obvious by service coverage. Peterbilt and KW have the nice long noses and tend to have better QA and this tends to be a common opinion in the the industry is all. I've known Freightliner assemblers over the years who had the same opinion.

      @@RawDeal-fw3xf I have tried for a few years to get a demonstrator from Hino. Nice people but timing has always fallen through. I would love to get a chance to demonstrate one. From what I understand though I want to compare them to Isuzu in terms of there style and design. They build a machine that the fit and finish is not the prettiest nor the most comfortable but the machine is going to run,work hard and most importantly be reliable. The interior and drive train are going to hold up well into the 100's of thousand of miles. That is pretty normal for Japan based manufacturers. Look at the Isuzu FTR and you will find very similar design and ergonomic aspects. I do like that they include a high horsepower base engine and an engine exhaust brake from factory. They are assembled in West Virginia, I appreciate that they put jobs where jobs are needed since that area has lost a lot of jobs recently. This Freightliner was built in Mexico.
