Abandoning The Crop?

  • What should have been two weeks worth of pea harvest turned into just a few days. Once we hit the hailed ground it was apparent attempting to harvest what was left didn't make sense. Beastbine had a potential nasty breakdown but thankfully it was caught and repaired in time!

    I was raised on an irrigated farm in New Mexico and understand how heartbreaking it can be to be hailed out. It's so frustrating to work so damn hard and then......My heart is going out to y'all tight now. Also, if we needed a part for our Combine or Peanut Thresher to keep running through the night we could call the dealer and somebody from the parts department would meet us there to give us the parts we needed to keep running. Harvest was always such a hectic time and everybody was involved, even the girls. At 67 I find myself missing the farm. Not enough to volunteer during harvest, but I still visit. And I sure hope you get a decent settlement from the insurance.

    No matter what happens, you are still loved, and you do have your health. I know it's not much, but at least you are still here to try again next year. The weather has been crazy all over the world, with massive fires, floods, landslides, mudslides, etc. There has been drought in Canada, as well as the US. We have one province on fire, basically, and that smoke hasn't helped anyone one bit. Just remember that your subs still love you all, even if you have had a crappy year for crops. Thank you for sharing your good years and your bad years. Most people don't realize the blood, sweat and tears that are shed to grow these crops, and how much it costs to run the equipment needed to plant and harvest. I applaud you for being optimistic, even when you haven't much to be optimistic about. Best part of this year for you will be the arrival of your baby. Keep that chin up, and that smile plastered on, and we'll keep on supporting you too. Hugs!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🐸

    Weight and balance and the structural logistics of having the cab that far forward is a cludge at best, a monstrocity at worst. There is equipment that can extend cabs about a foot or so forward, but that's added complexity where it may not be needed. That said camera's and laser/radar tracking a few feet ahead of the header is something that might help.

Our soybeans got hit real bad but we tried to get them off the ground but did more damage to combine than it was worth. Took our insurance adjustment and forgot about it. Sorry you had to give up some of the pea fields. Like you say gives to you time to tune and repair equipment for the wheat. Sorry about the shredder bearing. Looks to be big job to replace but you and leg arms got it. All of you are excellent at repairing things. Have all the right tools to get it done. Ya!!! Next up is wheat I guess. They moved across our farm so fast that by the time we noticed them it was already too late to save any of the crop. I’m sure we didn’t have crop insurance. I don’t know if there was even such a thing as crop insurance back in the 1970’s. Needless to say we had to sell out. That was a very tough period in my life. We were able to keep the land but everything that wasn’t tied down was sold. It was a disgrace to see what our cattle and equipment sold for.

I have a tendency to lean forward, especially when cutting soybeans, but I do it shelling corn too, just out of habit, and its not easy on the back doing that, especially in my case with having back issues. Back when I first started running the combine, the grain heads didn't float as well as they do now days, matter fact we didn't even have automated header control, so you really had to worry about picking up a rock cutting beans back in those days, but the grain tables weren't near as big back when I was a kid. @@digger105337 even if there were cameras in the cab of the combine it wouldn't matter for me, I'd still be leaning forward, just out of habit, I'm not a auto steering fan either, I prefer doing the driving. When some guys first started no-tilling, my Grampa called it the lazy mans way of farming, if only he was around to see the auto steering come about, lol. For spraying and putting anhydrous on pre-plant, and spreading fertilizer, auto steering definitely pays to have. But for tillage and running the combine, I prefer doing it myself, and I've always been able to drive straight, that if you drive by a field I was planting, you'd think I was using auto steering. Even moldboard plowing, I can keep it pretty straight. Half the fun is seeing how straight you can keep it. 1 reason why my Grampa started having me run the planter when I was only about 9-10 yrs old is because I drive straighter than he could, lol.

    Here is a safety tip for Leg Arms. Please, please , please don’t leave the chuck key in the lathe chuck like you often do. Always keep your hand on the key from the time you pick it up from the top of the headstock casing till the time that you put it back there. Those keys fly if you accidentally turn the lathe on. Not only will there be guaranteed damage to the lathe but very likely to Leg Arm’s head, chest or shoulder.
    Please take heed.

      Or don't turn the lathe on when you're putting parts in it... Thats pretty simple too.

    I’m up in sask, and our crops look pretty bad this year, but our peas are averaging 25/ acre, witch really makes you see how bad you guys have got it this year

    Wow... Glad some of your prep paid off. Sorry you guys are taking a hit. Some of that is already starting to affect us in the transportation industry. A lot of my mileage drop right now is from last year, but it definitely gives me the forecast for this winter and next year. Gonna get tight.

    Welker Family, I am sure you would rather harvest it than claim your insurance, but your doing the right thing by pulling the plug on the peas. It is a hard year with a lack of rain for everyone. Keep the faith. God will provide for all your needs. You guys work way more acres than I did as a kid. You machines are so big.. you could not even turn around in one of our old fields. Hey be safe out there. Tell your Canadians friends to put those fires out. It's so thick with smoke around here you can't see 1/2 mile here in Minnesota.

    Those old style chopper bearings caused a lot of combine fires. Including one of ours and a neighbor as well. Both of us got them put out quickly with no other damage to the machine luckily. Our local dealer did somewhat of a “recall” on them and replaced them with the updated bearings

      @CMDRSweeper Před 3 lety +1

      Consider yourself lucky, a combine fire can escalate extremely quickly and in some cases you may just have enough time to abandon the cab.
      The fact you even managed to save the combine is a miracle in it's own right.

    • @robo1210
      @robo1210 Před 3 lety

      @@CMDRSweeper oh I know we are very lucky. Machine was cutting soybeans, combine operator turned around at the end and there was actually a couple small circles burning in the field. Was dropping smoldering dust as he went. Saved the machine and field both. Very fortunate.

    it sucks with all the hard work and money you spent on seeding that it came down to losing that much crop but atleast you have something and have the equipment to help not have any big breakdowns.... ppl nowadays think that wal mart and places like that grow the produce they dont think that farmers and truckers like my family move the produce across the USA.... may GOD bless your family in health and in finance and yall will get through this year ive been watching this channel since you had around 50k subs i think and yall have grown ALOT and have made alot of good choices for the family and company you have... have a blessed day and agian GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY some people take that for granted and dont appreciate who helped them get to where they are and you just have to look up bc GOD is the one watching over you he made that storm wipe out most of your crops bc it was to much this year weve all had a rough year and HE is showing you that there is more to happiness than money GOD BLESS

    Looking over the cutting head would be nice, but watching for rocks is a job for something that can watch all the time across the entire head without blinking. That is really a job for a good camera system and some video processing looking for shapes ...close, medium and far...just a thought.

    Great video guy's, it really sucks that you guys lost so much crop. But God is good and He will bless you in ways you never imagined. You mentioned it would be nice to have the cab out over the header, I'm actually surprised that is not being done already. CLAAS has that tractor with the hydraulic turning cab that spins both directions. I don't see why they couldn't do that with a combine. Anyway God bless you guys and farm on.

      @Wayne Creek Land and Cattle Co. So many people think this drought is something new.... 1937, 1961, 1988, 2000-2001 and now 2021. Smart cattle guys here are putting up extra silage this year because if we don't get rain this fall and next spring, the herds will disappear.
