Rasp Bars Were Loose!

- Finished with peas, now to get ready for spring wheat. Wtih down time between crops we replaced the rollers on the TV380 and hauled all our pea crop in!
In this video we welded flat iron on skip wire modules and installed them in 3l 3r 4l 4r. The reason for this is to control the mog, chaff, trash that fall through onto the cleaning area worsening the grain sample.
This is NOT recommended for yields above 20 bushels an acre. Because our spring wheat is running 10-12 bushels this modification worked very well for us. If you are in crops yielding 20+ bushels then use small or large wire modules as you'll need more opportunities for grain to fall onto the sieve.
The best setup would be small wire modules instead of our modified skip wire modules but unfortunately we did not have enough small wire on hand so we modified our skip wire to get the job done.
We are now in 25 bushel wheat so we replaced 3l & 3r with large wire modules (as we have those) and are having excellent results.
Unfortunately did not make this very clear in this video so I wanted to make sure everyone understood why we did what we did and why this was recommended to us.

Fabulous opening with the drone shot of the train, the combine and " Old Glory" blowing in the breeze, plus the music was perfect. Whoever did that opening could easily work in Hollywood. You Welkers are amazing.

Most farmers are .like that. The friend of ours who was a Johhn deere abandon south australia who should us a tractor and and header was visiting us at the time.and watching us to repair and was surprised at the things my brothers and I would do with building. Construction and repairs. The things was we had a lot of fun doing things like that.
Like these guys we found it easier to have all the tools at hand that we need to make jobs easier.
They’d just have to buy more new(ISG) stuff and order parts. Zach Johnson/Millennial Farmer makes it work with less heavy fab/wrenching. That said, it definitely seems nice to do some of the work so you can justify having a full shop and skills for the times you can’t get a part…or for things they don’t make.
Watching you fix the skid steer, shows you never stop learning in life. Thanks for the great video.

Here in Australia we have a number of long range forecasters who generally get it right. All farmers use those people on what and when to plant. Congrats on reaching the 500K Sub's, your up with the big boy's now, keep up making the great content for us Dweebs :D

One thing I would recommend, when you're making changes to things like the concaves, use a drop pan to properly measure what the difference in harvest loss is out of the back of the combine. We bought a pan from Bushel Plus a couple years ago, and it was crazy how much grain we were losing out the back, even when we thought we were doing a great job setting the machine. Especially in small grains like wheat and canola
So true. Bought one also and our one combine was throwing out so much more then the other one it was scary.
@@mmm365 no we run a case 2188. Doesn't matter what brand you got, if they're not set properly they'll be spitting out the back, and there's more to setting a machine than a clean sample in the tank and a quick glance at the ground lol
Thank you for showing us the lows...to be educated on how farming really works and the things that can and do happen to make a great year or a year that makes you wonder if it's worth it.....remember that as much as we would like to control it,the weather and the 168,279 other 'oh hell' moments of breakage,electric gremlins,rattlesnakes( got to shout out to Wiggles), tires etc,etc,etc you can only do what you can do. Appreciate the good with the bad and how you choose to move on with it no matter which side of the coin shows it's self.
We have a 1480 that I put a engine in from a parts combine that came with it. The original engine through a rod through both sides of the engine. Took me a couple of weeks to finish it but we finished cutting our grain. That winter we took the rasp bars out along with the, I can’t remember what you call them that sits on the bottom. But we blocked the first one so it could thrash more. We also built and put in disrupters and changed the smooth bars on the back to a sort of rough bar. I’m sorry. I was in a four wheeler accident couple of weeks ago and my brain has not caught up yet. Chasing a couple of cows on a new chipped road. Was in the hospital for over a week. Broken ribs, crack my face and orbital what ever.
So positive when you could easily be down. But like you’ve said others have been hit too and some harder. All you can do is be positive and thankful for what you do have.

Unfortunately the drought and hail have reduced the wheat harvest too. There will be a lot of empty bins trying to stand up to the winter storms!!

The pricing is a definitely mind game of regret or not regret and no one can predict a widespread drought combined with hail. Always going to be obstacles in farming- just move on and an another opportunity might come your way for next year's crop. It's a balancing act for every farmer and you are not alone. The real problem is if we don't get any rain this fall for next year's crop....then it will be all preventive planting for sure...
Hi Scott. just a note when you are using the plasma torch. Instead of dragging in a straight line, which creates a nice thin cut. do little circles, still using the speed square to get a straight line. However the circles will create a wider cut. the wider cut allows the flame to blow the slag out the bottom of the cut, which means that it does not wield itself to one edge. which in turn means less clean up. the edge is not as pretty and flat, but for wielding after cutting its perfect and ready to go straight off the plasma. Being no strangers to fabrication because we March to the beat of our own drum and do all sorts of inter seeding/ harvesting, the videos that showcase such ingenuity are my favorite.
I’m dodging weather bullets like crazy here in N Central IL, all while the best corn I’ve ever grown sits waiting to get knocked over and down by wind and hail. 🙄

Excellent video Nick. I don't think many of the video watchers understand contracting it seemed from comments they think you did that after harvest and that would be great to be able to do. I know as a kid I did not get how contracting worked. Hope you have a good rest of harvest and all stay safe. Pete and RePete (Patch) are sure cute dogs, Coby is going to be unhappy.
Nick you can also put that pipe or a block of wood between the sprocket and track and drive backwards slowly to loosen the tracks

That jump from Leg Arms was Olympic quality.
With the module covers I have done this on older combines especially with flax as well as cover up grates. 90 percent of separation in an ih machine is done in first 3 ft.

It’s too bad when prices go up that drastically that there’s not a clause in your contract that allows for a reasonable upward adjustment of some kind. It just seems that the farmers always get the short end of the stick......

Drought really sucks but at least you got a bit to go towards your contract.It stings worse when you have to wash out at top dollar.
Your pea contract sounds very familiar. I contracted what I assumed to be half of a mediocre winter wheat crop for $5.60. Couldn't even fill that and now ww is $7.70. Sold a pile of hay for $140 first of June, now it's over 200. Marketing nightmare this year.
Yeah, taking out the concaves on the newer combines is definitely much easier than the older ones, the older ones were a bear to take out.

The crushed glass recycler uses a skid steer with a knucle coupler! when full a train engine picks up the loads and flat switches the empties.

farming is so unpredictable and hard you guys work your tails off it can be so frustrating I know hold your head high and work for another better year God bless you guys glad you found the trouble in your rotor that would have been bad running your header so low to the ground is hard on your equipment , I ran a rock up and in our rotor one year we were down a week and a little shy of 8000 bucks in repairs was shelling corn which some of it was down ,,,it was late at night I didn't see a huge ground hog hole drove front tire right into it letting combine drop lower picking up the rock it was a nite mare ,,,sorry I need not tell you,,,, next year will be better

Build an extended fork attachment for your floor jack, roll the bottom roller under with out having roll over the track.

I enjoy when you have the combines apart. Nice to see the insides and how all that works. The ones we had years ago were the old pull type and much different. Good things you found those loose bars and were able to tighten them. Interesting how you can pull the screens out and adjust them to a certain degree. Not too bad getting them in and out to work on them. Neat.

Previous owner didn't tighten the rasps but you should have really properly clinic any machine before season too. A strong preventive maintenance program will save you headaches, downtime, and usually overall cost compared to damaging everything from the concave to the knives on the way out. Love these shop videos!
