- From Last of the Mohicans. Uncas is the blood son of Chingachgook. He and Colonel Munro's daughter, Alice form a romantic bond that is alluded to in the film. The romance is never explicitly conveyed, but from the direction of the film the two definitely had feelings for each other.
Scene 1 - After hunting a deer, Nathaniel, Uncas and Chingachgook head to Cameron's farm to rest and chat. Cameron's wife asks Uncas why he is still single. Later on Nathaniels says the they will find a Delaware-speaking woman for Uncas and they will settle down and have many strong children. From this scene one can tell that Uncas would be a good and caring father.
Scene 2 - Uncas, Chingachgook and Nathaniel rescue Major Duncan Heyward and Colonel Munro's two daughters, Cora and Alice from a raid by Huron led by the vengeful Magua. As Alice walks up the river bank, Uncas looks at her - perhaps Alice would find him to be as suitable mate?
Scene 3 - After escaping another Huron ambush, Cora, Alice, Major Heyward, Nathaniel, Uncas and Chingachgook find refuge behind a waterfall, but they know that the Huron are close by. Alice walks a little too closely to the edge and is saved by Uncas and they embrace.
Scene 4 - Cora, Alice and Major Heyward are taken to the Huron camp to await their fate. Nathaniel arrives and pleads for their release. The Huron leader says that Alice will go with Magua to be his mate so that Munro's seed doesn't die and that Magua's "heart can be healed." Alice heads north with Magua.
Scene 5 - Nathaniel, Uncas and Chingachgook are attempting to save Alice from the Huron. Uncas reaches Magua's band first and is brutally slain by Magua in hand-to-hand combat and shoved off a cliff. Alice sees how brutal Magua is. She has no desire to be his mate. She looks over the cliff side contemplating suicide... Magua tries to dissuade her by beckoning to her with her slain lover's blood on his hands. She decides she would rather commit suicide than go with him.
One of the most powerful scenes in cinema and not a word was spoken. Uncas was so brave to try and rescue her. Alice so beautiful and resolved not to be chained to a life with someone so brutal. - Zábava
Alice's suicide scene is one of the most memorable in cinema - not a word was spoken but the intentions of all parties were quite clear. Uncas was so brave but a little reckless in his pursuit to protect Alice. He could've waited until Nathaniel and his father arrived and ambushed the Huron because with Alice in tow, they would not be able to move very quickly.... but such is love - it can make you do rash things. Alice was so beautiful and brave in her choice - die with her lover or mate with the cruel and vicious Magua... Much like Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. The part where Magua tries to dissuade Alice from jumping off the cliff with Uncas's fresh blood on his hands... ummm did he really think Alice was gonna come with him after all of that?
My thoughts exactly! He should have waited. It there was another version of this movie, that's what I would love to see. Happy ending for both sisters after the horrible things they experienced.
At that moment Alice became a brave young woman. She started off as a young naive girl thinking the world was all about adventures until she learned the hard way when she seen Uncas gave his life for her she knew he was in love with her. She would rather be with Uncas in death instead of Maguas slave and mate. From that moment she finally became a grown woman.
So many of Michael Mann's best scenes are dialogue-less it's extraordinary when you think about it.
You articulate your thoughts very well! This was one of my favorite parts! Magua lives...
Coincido totalmente. AMÉ esta escena !!!!
As a Native getting into film directing, some context a lot of viewers miss in this scene ties into Native American culture, notice that during the ambush prior to this scene, Alice's hair is out but after they escape, she is under the waterfall with Uncas and later captured, she now has a braid in her hair. Before jumping off the cliff, she turns her braid to the camera so the viewers can see. Having your hair braided by someone is a sign of companionship in Native culture.
Thank you for this, this is her sign of love to Uncas
well, here hair has a braid when Uncas first sees her... Then her hair is down without a braid when Uncas saves her from falling over the waterfall edge. then when she is captured and being held by the Huron, she has a braid...
@@medievalmaid I think Uncas braided Alice's hair in the waterfall. Eric Schweig told his romantic scenes with Jhodi May was cut of in the movie.
I've got native American ancestry and I cry every time....it pissed me off when they call us Indians
@@km8728 why does that piss you off?
I believe it actually works better for the film that Uncas and Alice's love scenes were cut. The fact that we never even see them kiss heightens their symbolism -- they represent all the young couples destroyed by war and hate, whose love never gets a chance.
Ever since I first saw this movie, theirs is the love story that has stayed with me. It breaks my heart every time I see it.
Cierto. Es desgarrador.
I didn't know that some scenes of Uncas and Alice were cut. It's interesting...
One of the most beautiful romances on film. . . and yet, not a word is spoken between the two lovers. . .
Let’s pour one out for Uncas. A brave and bold a warrior as ever was, but even he couldn’t take on Magua without both hands brought to bear. 😢
Their love story was told so subtle that I almost missed in until the end.
I missed it so many times. But now I can't but help see it.
Also most of their scenes were cutted out unfortunately...
No other movie ever made a love so powerful between two character when they didn't share a word and that's why I prefer uncas and Alice over nathan and coraz, their love, their connection was so real and deep and powerful you don't need a single word between them to feel it
the look he gives her is the most priceless look, it speaks a million words
Their story is my favourite- so subtle yet most powerful
One of the most underrated movie romances ever! When I think of this movie I don't think of Cora & Hawkeye, but of Alice & Uncas. For two such amazing actors, it's crazy that we see so little of them, particularly Jodhi (who said in an interview, a lot of her scenes ended up getting cut). Not that they don't make do with the scenes they have because they absolutely do, but still they left me wanting more. Not that I'm saying we needed the love scene at the waterfall that was cut (reasons for this vary from it being done for time or because Jodhi's mother insisted), but I wish we could have at least gotten a good kiss between Alice & Uncas. Of course, it's easy to pick up the clues they did have sex such as the very close cuddling, the intensity in those longing looks that went up to 11 after that night & the fact that Uncas recklessly (because deep love can make one throw all caution to the wind) ran hellbound for leather to rescue Alice on his own instead of waiting for his father & Hawkeye. At any rate, it's to the actors credit that they made this pairing so memorable given how little their screentime is. Still would have at least liked to see a kiss though.
Although not explicitly shown, Uncas and Alice has a romantic connection. The look on Alice’s face as Uncas looked at her after being cut by Magua said it all
They cut their love scene 😔
@@MysonEggAndHisbrotherCheese I think the movie is better without it. The connection is there. You can still feel it.
@@MysonEggAndHisbrotherCheese they did because Jodhi’s mother didn’t approve of her doing any type of love scenes since she was only 16-17 and Eric Schweig (Uncas) was in his early 20s
Odd - I didn’t see that Uncas was looking at Alice. Maybe but other possibilities too
@@catherinebreitfeller669 it's subtle....
when even the enemy understood her intention and tried to call her back......but her soul was soooo massively broken.......................................this scene is one of the the most heartbreaking in the entire history of cinema.....it still hurts, after almost 30 years
I gave my LotM DVD to my very sheltered friend many years ago for a college essay. She berated me on why I'd put her through such a traumatic movie, her mom even backed her up.
The story of the last of the Mohicans deserves to be known. Despite it being a work of fiction, it has truthful elements, based in fact. Should be known.
One of the best movies ever
Probably the most powerful scene from the movie. And that is saying a lot.
Sweet Alice. So brave, so strong at the end.
It´s a very Shakespearean scene.
In the original book it happens with Cora instead of Alice, but ... Alice's feelings are pushed to the limit ... spend all eternity hoping to be in spirit with her true love, or cling to a life she empties meaninglessly being the slave of her greatest enemy, a man who would abuse her, who killed her boyfriend and father without blinking, and who wants her alive to continue humiliating her father's name.
Death or death in life.
Alice did what anyone in love would have done
Honnestly that scene with Alice is one of the best acting scene I ever saw.yep
Alice was in shock from the beginning and tried to off herself at least once before. That's why Uncas was always watching her. She was already suicidal.
Is that why she stood so close to the edge of the waterfall?
@@imsparkly7968 that was my impression. This was right after her father was killed.
Yeah the older I get the less I see the romance. She barely notices him after their first scene, so caught up in her own tragedy and hopelessness. I don't think she really saw him until he tried to rescue her. She killed herself to save herself, not to join her love. It was the only option she had left.
His motivations were less clear - the movie hints at romance, but I think it could also just be plain old compassion. He's the only one who really sees her suffering, and provides her with support. They had a bit of a kinship, being the quieter siblings following along with their more formidable older brother and sister. And I think they were both romantic at heart, she at the beginning so naive about the Americas, and him when he recklessly ran to rescue her. I think her romanticism was quashed through all the violence though.
Still...I ship it lol
Read the book for god sake. The love was real!
@@jeffguan1 in the book it is Cora that Uncas loves. The movie changed quite a few things up
I just noticed that Magua motions for her to come to him with his hand covered in Uncas blood.
0:59 best scene :)
I like she walks off and they move on like it was no big deal...
as far as soundtracks fitting the pathos of a movie,I've yet to see a finer example than this. I was lucky enough to have seen this in the theatre. I unabashedly cried like a kid with no ice cream.
This scene gets me every time
Alice is just so beautiful. She looks like God dipped her in butterscotch.
My goodness, what a poetic comment.
Amazing
It’s Queen Calanthe!
Final desgarrador, me traslada a otro espacio.
This scene is so strong. Alice's glance is the most powerful, it shows that deepness we seldom see in human beings. She is so noble - she's been through so much, and she's still loyal, both to her feelings as to her principles. At first she is horrified by the recent scene of Unca's decease, and then she looks at the abyss... and realizes... her life is already a deep, empty abyss. You can see everything in her eyes, she has both the greatness of noble souls as the disappointment of those who have seen much. And everything is on her eyers. And the 'monster' (Magua - but the monster was also victim in the past, so, we can't entirely judge him) suddenly sees that, and that's the moment of redemption of the beast, the time when he innerly feels the impulse towards light. And you can see that in his eyes, too, and when he loosens the grip of his hand on the knife's handle, and offers his hand for her to come back. But Alice is noble... she can''t take part on that which she does not belong. And then she decides to leap in the abyss, yielding to her grief. It is so SAD, but I can feel this scene so much! So much was conveyed here. This is the nobility of those who choose for being loyal to themselves instead of succumbing to the mass at the expense of their own personal safety and hypocritical behaviors. PS. I am not making any comments on favor of suicide, if you believe that, please reconsider your thoughts, I am only observing and saying how I admire nobility of character and higher sacrifices of loyalty.
I disagree with this title, Alice did not commit Suicide. Just as Duncan did not commit Euthanasia or suicide. Alice was not committing suicide, she probably knew what her fate was with Magua and it would not have been a happy one. It would have been one that violated her virtue, and you always have right to forfeit your life if that is the case. She also love Uncus, who had just sacrificed his life for her, I am sure her heart was broken as well. We get cheated out of a love story, but there was plenty implied within the movie.
Yes, definitionally speaking, she did commit suicide
The title is wrong, but she DID commit suicide. What it's wrong about is WHY she committed suicide. Magua wasn't going to "mate" with her. He was going to kill her.
She didn't commit suicide she gave a sacrifice to be with Uncas as he died trying to save her as she knew he loved her. From this moment when she seen what the world was really about she became a fully grown woman.
Um...no matter the reason behind it, willingly jumping to your death is suicide.
Bro was really fighting for her 😢
Michael Mann originally wanted Alice to dress a bit more womanly as Cora was. But Jody May was only 17 at the time, plus her mother was on the set, so he had to dress her more conservatively.
perfect Movie I,m love sooo mutch❤
Hermosa Alice y Valiente Uncas.
There was a comment somewhere that Alice was more like traumatized than in love the whole time. No place for love in such a harsh environment
👌👌👍❤
04:14 great acting!
Unkas loves Koraaa
I think people like to read into this scene way too much. We have to remember Alice was led away from the village and the last thing she was Nathaniel pulling her sister away from the crowds. He is alone and she doesn't know if Uncas or Chingackgook survived the fall from the waterfall or are even there. Nathaniel is with her sister and in the other direction. Therefore her only hope for rescue is dashed. When Uncas appears, she is taken aback as he came out of seemingly nowhere & when he's fighting back the Huron one by one, you see the hope in her eyes that he will rescue her. But when he fights Magua & he gets cut, notice Uncas stops and he looks at Alice. Only at her. It's a last bid for rescue. Magua is looking at him unsure what he is going to do, then Uncas lunges at him and it results in Uncas getting more injured. Note how Uncas stands up again on the cliff edge. I took as that as a sign that he will do everything in his power, using what's left of his body to protect his woman & Magua finishes him off. Alice realizes that not only is Uncas dead but thinks her hopes for rescue are now completely finished. Uncas was alone. There is no Chingackgook. We see a shot of the blade and then Maguas hand signaling for her to come forward. He looks like he feels a moment of guilt for what he's done & he lowers the dagger. But her standing on that rock where Uncas stood moments before is almost like a protection from Magua. She has two choices. She either steps forward to Magua & risks of him stabbing her or taking her hostage again to kill her later on. Please remember she had no idea what the Huron chief said that Magua was to take Alice as his wife as Duncan didn't translate that part. She thinks she's going to die either way so she looks down and sees another way out. One that would be quicker. So she takes it.
She does know what the Huron chief said because they were speaking French and Duncan was translating for Nathaniel. Heck, for all we know, Cora and Alice knew French from being well breed girls from England (or Scotland). But there’s no guarantee Magua was going to honor the order since he was banished from the tribe…..he easily could have burned her to death like Duncan. Maybe when he is lowering the knife and telling her to come to him, there is some indication he would use her to have his kids, and not kill her?
I get what you’re saying. I think it was a little of everything. Yes she did think at that moment that it’s over and Cora is probably dead but she did like Uncas and not just because he was trying to save her. All the time Nathan spent with Cora uncas spent with Alice. The sad look in her eyes when she realized he wasn’t going to win and seeing him get hurt for her was heartbreaking. At one point very quickly she tries to run to him but the Natives holds her back. She was just over all of it by that point and even if she did make it she would not have been the same with uncas dead.
The director literally cut a love scene between them because the actor was too young. Besides, the look on her face when Uncas was killed was pure heartbreak.
😭

Urrrr mean.
False love story, in the book, it was Cora and Uncas ! Magua wants Cora for him and he tooks her. Cora was 1/4 black (her mother was mixed, half black) and Alice's half sister, she was more strong and "lovable" for a brave Mohican than the "fade" blond younger Alice (wich was in love with the white officer, the Major Heyward who doesn't die). Uncas, Cora and Magua died at the end. Hawkeye was never in love.
"...Magua escapes with Cora and two other Hurons; Uncas, Hawk-eye, Heyward, and Gamut pursue them up to a high mountain. In a fight at the edge of a cliff, one of the Hurons kills Cora, Gamut kills one of the Hurons, Magua kills Uncas, and Hawk-eye kills Magua. The novel concludes with a lengthy account of the funerals of Uncas and Cora at the Delaware village, and Hawk-eye reaffirms his friendship with Chingachgook. Tamenund prophesies: "The pale-faces are masters of the earth, and the time of the red-men has not yet come again..."
Metis means half white half Native American not half black
@@ninafucec652 "métis" in french means mixed. Cora was white and black mixed. The terms multiracial people or mixed-race people are used to refer to people who are of more than one race.
So, I was talking about mixed (métis word in french).
but do you know that:
In Canada today, Métis (with capital letters) refers to an Aboriginal people living mainly in the centre of the country, descended from Cree, Ojibway, Saulteaux and mostly French settlers. Moreover, the authors[Who? ] automatically associate the term Métis with Francophone Métis. The province of Manitoba (or state of Manitou) was founded by Métis, mostly French-speaking and Catholic. There are Métis across Canada, including Ontario, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Labrador21. Because of an unclear definition of the Métis people, the population concerned is difficult to estimate. Estimates range from 300,000 to 800,000 people22.
Different Métis communities speak different languages, especially seniors and people from rural communities. According to the 2006 Canadian census, there are very few Métis who speak their traditional language, a dialect of French called Métchif (Michif, Mechif or Michif), but linguists call it Métis French, to distinguish it from the mixed French/Cree language of the same name spoken by other communities and often despised for a language. Other Métis communities speak Métis English, Métis Cree or Métis Saulteaux/Ojibwe. The schools established by the Catholic Church were dedicated to replacing this language with standard French, and today English is often used by the Metis22.
The Canadian government does not recognize the Métis as a “First Nation”, but the 1982 Canadian Constitution recognizes them as an Aboriginal people, which allowed them to regain traditional rights (including hunting rights).
Canada’s most famous Métis was Louis Riel (1844-1885) who negotiated with the Canadian government the creation of the province of Manitoba. A central figure in the Red River Rebellion and the North-West Rebellion, he opposed the Canadian government and, accused of treason, was executed by hanging on 16 November 1885. Today, Riel remains a controversial figure in Canadian history, regarded by his supporters as a heroic resistance fighter. After the second rebellion, English-speaking speculators succeeded in dispossessing the Métis of their lands by diverting a program established by the Canadian parliament to purchase these lands[ref. necessary].
Labrador Métis
The Labrador25 Métis, also known as NunatuKavummiut, are a people similar to the Red River Métis but are not considered “Métis”. They are descendants of Inuit women and European men from southern Labrador.
