Hi John! I believe it was actually Oscar Wilde who posited that all bad poetry was sincere, or rather more specifically that "“All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling. To be natural is to be obvious, and to be obvious is to be inartistic." The full version makes his critique clearer, but I think I nevertheless prefer the abridgement you quoted for its pithiness. Brevity, wit, etc.
Anyways, I love the sentiment of this video. I'm also a firm believer in the notion that one of the greatest gifts you can give someone is your sincere and thoughtful attention. I struggle with social anxiety, and being on the other side of that guileless, open acceptance is so fulfilling, so I aspire to bring that same openness to all my relationships.

John, your book, your movie, it captured Aza’s Mom’s journey and an aspect of Aza’s journey that I couldn’t understand. But there it was. It demanded to be felt, to be witnessed. That window was very hard to look through for me. A true piece of art. Congratulations!

I feel the greatest part of being an artist is seeing someone visibly affected by my work.
I often show my work at art fairs and festivals so I’m around when people see it. Most people seem to like it. But it just connects to a smaller number of people in a much deeper way. I live for those moments. It makes the time, fear and self doubt worth pushing through.
I can’t imagine what that must feel like on such a scale you have experienced as someone making art that is read and watched by millions of people, but I’m happy for you.
The Anthropocene Reviewed struck me on a deeper level. It reminded me that everything in the world, no matter how common, can be examined and appreciated. Thank you for that.

“You are not what you think”.
I think that phrase alone is so important for a lot of people to hear and understand. I think everyone thinks things they don’t like and those things could bring a person down. I’ve struggled with it before and had to realize I’m the person I put out into the world out of all the possibilities within me. That brought me a lot of peace. Hearing it summed up so beautifully really hit me.

I know the rain can be hard, it makes going outside a challenge, but I love the smell and the sound and that I don’t have to go out and water my plants. I live in PNW so it’s good I feel that way I guess.
    Tl;dr Rain = good weather

It's strange how I last really watched vlog brothers during the signing of turtles all the way down, with the board of turtles still making me chuckle. And I still wear my Piza top in all its faded glory. It's strange how I still feel like part of this community but am barely an observer.

I tried to watch Turtles All the Way Down with my mom the other night, but she kept falling asleep and barely made it to the Applebees scene, which was just killing me, because, from just that little bit that I've seen so far, I was feeling incredibly seen, but she... literally wasn't seeing it.

There's a portrait of Rubens Peale by his brother Rembrandt Peale that epitomizes this, for me. Rubens was the family scientist; he opened the earliest U.S. museums later in his life. In this portrait, he's 17 and showing off his prized geranium -- the earliest documented geranium in the U.S.
Every time I go to the National Gallery of Art in DC, I stop by it for a moment because I feel like I can see how much the brothers loved their work and each other.

I think both the book and the film versions of Turtles All the Way Down are really good-if not great-art, but I cannot judge them without bias because to me they are what the spiral painting is to Aza: TATWD immediately pulls me in and _gets_ me in a way I haven't felt before.
I bawled reading the book because it was the first time I'd seen the dialectic between mental disease/disorder and the idea of the self and the internal battle with the question of "How could I be *more* myself without this? Medication seems to help me be who I want to be, but it also must be making me not me because it's changing me."
At the time, I was dealing the me/not-me-ness of bipolar disorder and I really felt that "I wasn't possessed by a demon. I was the demon." Six years later, my bipolar symptoms are entirely managed but I'm dealing with the same thing (to a lesser extent) with the revelation that I'm autistic and the effects of that growing larger as my depression and hypomania have disappeared. Autism doesn't feel like a demon but damn, sometimes I would kill for a brain that's "normal."
