I didn't say anything about a cure | This is about what prevention options we have

  • You may think I’m crazy for doing this after what happened on Instagram with this question last week, but after the comments section got heated with people attacking each other, I decided that I want to give my thoughts.
Because I want everybody to remember, we are all on the same team here and to be fighting amongst ourselves is the least productive way forward.
And also, nothing ever got solved without a conversation to exchange ideas first. So let’s do that.

I'll have to come back to finish the video because I have an appt. before this video is over.
But, as a US citizen I am, sadly, very aware of how people on the same team can bicker and insult and totally disregard other people's personhood when their OPINIONS disagree with their own OPINIONS.
In every case where bickering occurs on a large scale, it seems to be exactly what the offenders WANT us to do because they know that, when divided, we fall.
Being on the same teams on this or any issue, can't we just unite in our goals and DISCUSS opinions? Can't we just agree to disagree, the way people did it when I was a child in the 60s?
It really is possible if you're not mentally ill. United, we stand a much better chance of making our common goals.

A rational, science-based approach is the only viable route to optimising the safety and well-being of children. The science (e.g. Lanning 1987) tells us that the vast majority of perpetrators of CSA aren't paedophiles but adult-attracted situational offenders. The bogeyman myths don't make such a distinction and so leave us prone to missing the real threats.
Therapy benefits not only the individual but also those around the individual and society as a whole. Prevention is better, cheaper and more desirable than punitive measures wheeled out after the fact. In the current climate, therapy is problematic. Although the UK doesn't have mandatory reporting laws like the USA, they have been suggested quite recently. Even in the absence of such laws, I know of cases where confidentiality has been breached simply where someone in therapy has disclosed an attraction to children, which in itself is not a crime or an indication of ill intent. This is an obstacle to help and, therefore, to prevention. Compare Project Dunkelfeld in Germany.
The definition of paedophilia offered in the video is incorrect. It was depathologised (i.e. it is no longer considered a disorder in and of itself) in the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5, 2013) and in the latest edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11, 2019). It is properly defined as exclusive or preferential attraction to prepubescent children.
Jeremy, one person you should try to interview is Dr Sarah Goode. She is an academic who has done extensive work in this field and had some involvement with prevention organisation Stop It Now, so she is well placed to provide insight into the topic of a rational, science-based approach to prevention.
