Slight correction (kind of?) on the Custode acting as a jailer for the sword. The daemon didn't think it could corrupt him, it just had to wait for him to die of his wounds. In Master of Mankind when the daemon is sneaking around the webway picking off Imperial forces like Sisters of Silence and Admech titans, it see some Custodes fighting. It doesn't even bother trying to corrupt or possess them and goes to find a new target, because it thinks the stars would burn out before it could bend a Custode to its will.

    • @irishspartanstudios
      @irishspartanstudios Před 2 lety +31

I feel like it wouldn't be made by either, because why would Chaos create something that can actively hurt them? Unless it was made by Tyneech in that case it makes perfectly (meaning no) sense. It probably wasn't made by the Necrons either primarily because it doesn't have their overall theme, no green glow or dark metal. Plus, despite the ability to close warp rifts which is a huge plus the Necrons have, it doesn't keep with the Necrons overall abilities.

It’s also so powerful that the rumor is that it was originally another chaos god, as it is clearly a daemon weapon but apparently hates all the chaos gods that currently exist. Two corrections:
Battle-axes require a lot of skill to wield effectively.
Spears are a lot more useful on the battlefield than swords. Swords are duelling weapons and sidearms, not weapons meant for war.
For example, despite the Katana being the iconic Samurai weapon, the Samurai weapon of choice in warfare would have been the Yumi (Bow) and Yari (spear/pike) or Naginata (pole-blade). The Katana was only used as a defensive/back-up weapon or against peasants in non-war situations _(cough straight up murder cough)_ and mostly symbolized the status as a Samurai.
(Greatswords and early modern Cavalry Swords (1700+) are a category on their own so they are not included here.)

Fulgrim' Laer blade is like the 3 Witches in MacBeth. The witches are the allegory and personification of MacBeth's treacherous ambition and hubris.
The Laer Blade incarnates Fulgrim's path towards insanity, his terror to see his legion suddenly blasted by mutations once again and erased from existance, like the two lost primarchs.
Fulgrim was so persuaded that his legion was doomed to genetic devastation that he threw it on a desperate quest for martial perfection, to obtain as much glory as quickly as possible, so the EC could at least survive in the history books after the inevitable would occured. Which is why he almost destroyed his legion in vain glory vs the Laers, why he was so obsequious towards the Emperor.
Eventually, Fulgrim's anxiety became insanity, mixing xenos and astartes DNA for improved combat capabilities, a crime the Emperor would never forgive. They had brought upon themselves what they had feared.
If MacBeth's fatal flaw was ambition, Fulgrim's was narcissism, his ego unable to accept he could eventually become the forgotten memory of a failed project.

If you go Titans, the Aeldari Phantom Titans have a more powerful warglaive, and the imperial titans and chaos titans can have some klaws or fists with damage 12 (or 18 in the case of warlord titans). And since Horus knew next to nothing of the warp at the time, he had no clue that a warp jizz infused weapon can just cut through basically mythrill but copyright infringement free.

    *Edged?*
    - yes: aligning the edge to impact/slice your target will need conscious attention- skill requirements
    - no: wtf are you using? a piece of 2-by-4? Well, swing hard, follow through with your swings, ensure you train your stamina much more than anything else- since a blunt blow will require more time and strength to recover from before you can follow-up.
    *Flail-like?*
    - yes: momentum and spacial awareness are your friends, you are as much a threat to yourself as to your enemy- training requirements.
    -no: *see above*
    *Curved profile?*
    - yes: train against shielded targets, weapons typically are curved to either [at lower gradients:-] inflict more slice damage or/and [at higher gradients + hooked profiles:-] to reach around held shields to inflict guard-breaking strikes. (light, but either enough to create a gap to strike, OR straight following through hard enough may result in fatal impalement) In examples, such as the kukri- thier curve is designed to enable significantly harder swings, a hammering motion is advised and encouraged to inflict armour-crumpling damage.
    - no: *see above*
    *two-handed?*
-Yes: welcome to the typical scottish butcher's shop! (Claymore joke), practice hand placements in various scenarios (having your dominant hand closer to the guard, as oppose to the pommel, increases the accuracy of the blade edge, enabling slicing damage to be consistent. Placing it closer to the pommel enables a more kukri-reminiscent and armour-raping blow.
    - no: *see above*
Etc, etc- we have made a lot of variants of *"Sharp stick"*

So in terms of using a battleaxe it is not 100% about the swing, though it is certainly a major aspect. Someone good at wielding a battleaxe would have multiple hand positions on the weapon that allow for different combat capabilities.
The most predictable is long range where the hands would be further away from the axe head, close enough to be stable, but long enough to get maximum range with stability and combine the power of the torso with the momentum of the axe head. This would be used for breaking shields and doors.
Next is a medium range where one hand is a bit closer to the axe head but not too close. This is the range where the hook shape on the bottom of the axe head (could be one or both sides) can be used for hooking the opponent's weapon so that it moves past you and you disarm them by turning or you draw them in which adds to the power of a shorter strike than in the first mentioned hand position. This grip also allows for what I call grinding cuts which is when rather than the blade having a ton of momentum and coming down, you rely on the sharpness of the blade and leverage so that you press the axe head and then do more damage by torquing while pulling it out. This last technique is also possible in the next hand position.
Last position is when both hands are closer to the head so that it allows more if the handle to be exposed. In this position you make use of the bottom of the handle as a striking and/or grappling weapon. This is when you are too close to get power from a swing. The handle can be used as a lever to better leverage takedown. This is also the range where a spike or short blade on the top of the axe can be useful as you have more control for thrusting it.
I hope this gives some perspective on how dynamic a battleaxe can be, much of this can also be applied to warhammers as well.
