Much of the lyric for this song was taken from MLKs' "I Have A dream" speech that he delivered in Washington DC in 1963. 1968 was a very tough year! Anti war protests in the streets, Civil Rights protests in the streets, riots and parts of cities' burned to the ground including sections of Washington DC! Political assassinations (MLK and Robert F Kennedy) and assassination attempts (Presidential hopeful, Gov. George Wallace was shot at a rally in Laurel, MD. He survived but was paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life.). The Vietnam war was going badly as the body bag totals were announced every night on the evening news. As I said, 1968 was a very tough year!

Elvis had a unique, one of a kind voice. On it's own, it's remarkable but when you add in his remarkable emotionality then it becomes this unexplainable thing and it's the two aspects combined that puts all others to shame. Who else has such a unique voice that his catchphrase is "Thank You?"
