It’s about coping with the loss of his wife (to cancer), shortly after his brother’s passing. Following his wife’s death, Herbert Grönemeyer moved to Britain and lived there with his children for many years. The heartfelt lyrics of this song truly touch the soul. It is marvellous poetry. Herbert Grönemeyer’s talent as an actor shines through in his amazing recitation of the lyrics. He was cast in the internationally renowned film Das Boot.

Another poetic singer-songwriter type of artist is Reinhard May. He made lots of deep and meaningful songs, some even political. Like: "Meine Söhne geb ich nicht". These Songs like those from Herbert Grönemeyer are popular in Germany because its not so much about outstanding voices or all this shiny, shallow glamourous performance thing, its all about the meaning and the message in the songs.

There are only very few songs that make me speedrun through every moment of loss in my life and this is one of them. It is so deeply moving and really showcases Herbert Grönemeyer's command of the poetry that can be tickled out of the German language. We often get jokes about how harsh our language sounds but it is a language of poets and musicians and artists and can have such beauty to it. He captured the feeling of losing a loved one so perfectly it's actually rude. I love this song.

He was the biggest German artist in the 80s and 90s i think. The only one comparable would be Marius Müller Westernhagen. It was a Micheal Jackson / Prince thing. Grönemeyer is a decent singer with a nice voice but what we love most about him is his lyrics, i think. His Song "Männer" (men) defined how a whole gender saw themselves and "Flugzeuge im Bauch" (airplanes in the belly) is still one of the biggest love songs.

Since last week they have even been collaborating with Baby Metal with a song called "Ratatata". Super cool!!!!It's a hit for this summer and the European Football Championship in Germany in 2024! From the past I have a tip from Jennifer Rostock with “Hairspray”.Here is the text in English by Herbert Grönemeyer "The Way": I can't see anymore
    Don't trust my eyes anymore
    Can hardly believe it anymore
    Feelings have turned
    I'm far too lazy
    To give up
It would also be too early
    Because something always works
    We were conspiring
Would have died for each other
    Have bent the rain
    Lent us trust
    We tried
    To turn on the shot
    Nothing was too late
    But much too early
    We pushed each other
    Through all tides
    We got lost
    Desperately loved us
    We have the truth
    As lying as possible
It was a piece of heaven
    That you exist
    You have every room
    Flooded with sun
    You have every annoyance
    Turned into the opposite
    Nordic classy
    Your gentle kindness
    Your unbridled pride
    Life is not fair
    Danced the film
    In a silver room
    From the golden balcony
    Marvel at infinity
    Totally lost, drunk
    And everything was allowed
    Together in time lapse
    Midsummer Night's Dream
    You have every room
    Flooded with sun
    You have every annoyance
    Turned into the opposite
    Nordic classy
    Your gentle kindness
    Your unbridled pride
    Life is not fair
    Your safe walk
    Your real poems
    Your serene dignity
    Your unwavering skill
    You have destiny
    Your forehead commanded
    You never betrayed him
    Your plan of happiness
    Your plan of happiness
    I'm not going away
    I extended my deadline

Dwayne, thank you so much for sharing. You will have made a lot of Germans cry with this song. Herbert Grönemeyer dedicated it to his wife, who died from cancer. Grönemeyer's break through was in 1984 with his album "4630 Bochum". 4630 was the postal code of the City of Bochum at that time, "Bochum" was the title song of this album. It's a hymn to his home town. And it became the hymn of the Bundesliga Club VfL Bochum. They still play it before each game in the stadium.
Maybe you came across Herbert Grönemeyer earlier as am actor. He was one of the main characters of the famous German movie "Das Boot" by Wolfgang Petersen in 1981. The way Grönemeyer is singing is very special, UNIQUE, and you will always recognize him. Not only because of the way he sings, but also because of his lyriks!
I don't know any other artist that is singing that way, not even Sting (as much, as I love his songs), not even Phill Collins (as much as I love his songs)... Grönemeyer is... Grönemeyer!

But my parents were huge fans of him.
I would recommend KIZ feat. Henning May - Hurra die Welt geht unter.
KIZ are a German rap group that mostly use socially critical lyrics in an ironic way.
Henning May is the singer of the German pop-rock group Annenmaykantereit with an unmistakable voice.

AnnenMayKantereit and Milky Chance are some German artists on the younger side. They collaborated and released the song 'Roxanne' which was originally from The Police. They made a a cappella version out of it and the music video is one cut while recording the music. They don't sing in German, but still great to introduce you to two great voices to Germany.
One iconic song from Herbert Grönemeyer is 'Currywurst'

I love Grönemeyer since the 1980s and know mostly his early songs, which are often full of humour. Like "Mambo", "Currywurst" and "Kinder an die Macht". Go listen to Mambo, it's a completely different kind of song in music and lyrics.
Reinhard Mey is very good too! Like "Ankomme Freitag den 13" and "Ein Antrag auf Erteilung eines Antragsformulars" and "Über den Wolken". He sings since the 1960s and now, at 82, he still sings. I heard his songs when I was a child and now, at 63 I still do :D
And I love some songs of Udo Jürgens, although he has been in another kind of genre (at least common believed) but he also has sung political and songs with social critic too. Like "Griechischer Wein" and "Aber bitte mit Sahne". He died in 2014 but some of his lyrics and music are still in my head.

Herbert Grönemeyer (pronunciation = Grönamiar) is on the the best german pop-singers ever. He is a juggler of the german language. You have to get accustomed to the way he is singing (to understand "his" German, even sometimes not so easy for us Germans 😂) but the themes and the texts of his songs are amazing !

Other german songs: Maybe Udo Jürgens, another legend with over 1000 written songs. "Griechischer Wein", "Musik Musik" or "Liebe ohne Leiden"
Sarah Connor “From Sarah with Love"
Die Toten Hosen "Hier kommt Alex", "Alles aus Liebe" or "Unsterblich"

    We were bound together
Would have died for each other
    Bent the rain
    Lent each other trust
    We tried
To turn back on the slope
    Nothing was too late
    But so much too soon
    We pushed each other
    Through every tide
    Got side-tracked
    Loved each other desperately
    Concealed the truth
    As best we could
It was a piece of heaven

    In a silver-washed room
    Marvelled at infinity
    From a golden balcony
    Hopelessly lost, drunken
    And anything was allowed
    Together in time-lapse
    Midsummer night's dream
    You flooded every room
    With sunshine
    Turning every sorrow
    Into its reverse
    Nordic nobility
    Your gentle kindness

I'd really recommend the band "Unheilig".
Especially the songs "Geboren um zu leben", "Zeit zu gehen", and "Für immer" (+ "Hinunter bis auf eins" and "Einer von Millionen").
The lead singer (he goes by the name "Der Graf") wrote "Geboren um zu leben" for a good friend of his, who he recently lost back then. Der Graf retired in 2016, but the band still continues without him.
In general many of their songs are about the value of life and to cherish every moment of it, so they can get a bit melancholic, but there are also songs that are quite energetic ("Hinunter bis auf eins" and "Einer von Millionen" are good examples for more energetic songs).
The genres are mostly pop rock, with a bit of electronic. Some songs also categorise as gothic rock and Neue Deutsche Härte.
