The Whisper of the Woods

- I shot this on location in the UK's New Forest National Park, a haven of wild heaths and ancient woodlands, sheltering an oasis of wildlife. I visit the woods quite often - once a week, if I'm able - but year by year I can see the biodiversity wane. This short film aims to highlight the issue of habitat and biodiversity loss in the UK due to industrialisation, climate issues, and pollution. It also serves as a prelude to an upcoming series filmed in the New Forest, covering British Wildlife from life in the waterways to the log piles and the treetops.
Written, filmed and narrated by Leo Richards.
Filmed on location in the New Forest National Park, UK.
To celebrate National Poetry Day (6th October) and this year's theme of 'The Environment' I have collaborated with @Ecoflix to run a #WriteForTheWild poetry competition! I hope this film inspires you to grab a pen and take part. Read how below.
About Ecoflix:
Ecoflix is the world's first not-for-profit media group dedicated to wildlife and conservation storytelling. This is not a sponsorship, but a collaboration. I'm very excited to be working with them on a few upcoming projects :D Check out Ecoflix here: ecoflix.com/
How to Get Involved:
All you have to do is write a short poem about the environment and send us a photo of the poem which we will share to our social media channels! Feel free to get creative and share your poems as part of a wildlife drawing too! Check out my poem in this video for inspiration. I chose to touch upon the issue of biodiversity loss as our country's wild havens continue to be ravaged by agriculture, industry, and a disregard for the fragility and importance of nature that seems to plague the population.
Please share your submissions to Instagram and tag @ecoflixofficial and @naturalwfacts to have them shared. The deadline for submissions will be the 16th October, with the winner announced shortly after. The winner will receive a 1 year subscription to Ecoflix for themselves or their family, plus for another friend or family too! :D

I believe I speak for everyone: we missed you so much 💜 So grateful you’re alive & well, please never change, please continue explaining the hidden worlds of our Earth.. we need you
This is so unbelievably kind of you, thank you for welcoming me back and being here. I’m always a little afraid to step away, however briefly, from my typical content, so comments like this make my day. I hope to keep on doing what I do for many more years to come! 💛
Totally agree, Dragosteaa!

What happened? I was away a while, myself
It's been a while, but guess who's back!! As many of you know, I've been away travelling over the summer but I'm home now and have a ton of exciting projects lined up :D This film is to celebrate National Poetry Day. It also serves as a prelude to my upcoming Nature Boy Journal series, exploring woodland wildlife in-depth! I'm also working on some new deep sea films in my usual style, as well as a very ambitious collaboration with an underwater 4K videographer from Indonesia called Edi Frommenwiler, which I'll release more info about shortly. It's so, so good to be back. I'm sorry for taking so long. Thank you all for sticking with me!
so happy your back!! missed ur content so much ^^ 💚💚
Oh, I was so excited about this notification I jumped up and down!
@@sydneymomma11 Thank you so much 😭😭
YEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!! I literally gasped when I saw this new video in my feed lol. Thanks dude, keep them coming!
We missed you!
When I was little, my sister would tell me my parents found me under a rock. She was trying to make me cry perhaps. But instead, I imagined a nice mossy rock, under a misty forest , with mushrooms and leaves and critter friends. It was a comforting place in my mind. My sister is gone now. I miss her.
Thanks for the wonderful video. Xoxoxoxo
I cried when I read this, hope your sister is in a beautiful place 🙏🙏
My sister told me similar things, I found a similar meaning in those jokes, and I lost mine as well... To suicide in 2013. I miss her everyday. I believe I was led to this comment. I wish you the utmost peace and happiness, and also wish I could hug you.
God speed.
@@jijadelmais : Now his sister is under a rock. Ironic.
I know, I'm a terrible person with an inappropriate sense of humor. We all have our character flaws. At least I was nice to my brother when we were growing up.
I too felt tears while reading your touching words about your sis! ❤So dear and Beautiful! Im sending My upmost condolences to you and your family and may you find true inner peace under that mossy rock and in your beautiful heart! Take care and know your Sister loves you so much ❤! So do I 😊Take care
@@deusexaethera just because your sense of humor sucks doesn't mean you should share it, you don't know how the other person will feel 💀💀 exists dark humor and respect, and there is a line that divides both.
As an English nerd and biology nerd, there are very few things that hit both areas of my brain, but THIS was perfect. I’ll watch it a hundred times.
I relate to you greatly! 😄 And thank you, that’s very kind!
The poetry of this is haunting yet majestic. I'm super impressed
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me :)
There’s something magical about thick forest with animals busy living their lives.
It’s quite, but crowded.
I totally agree. It feels like a gateway to some forgotten world, nestled away and hidden in the treetops, under the deadwood, that emerges if you’re quiet and patient and know where to look…
Well, I'm more than a little teary-eyed. Such a lovely video with beautiful background music. And your poetry describes so perfectly the experience of walking in, and being one with nature. All of us who spent hours exploring the great outdoors as kids can all feel the sorrow that comes with knowing how much less there is of it to enjoy today. I hope you had an enjoyable summer break, but I am glad you're back. I'm really looking forward to your new content!
You have such an incredible voice, your tone is so soothing and clear, if you don’t do voice work already outside of your videos, you absolutely could! Amazing as always :)
Beautiful and sad at the same time
You have such a wonderful and unique narration style. I love listening to your work.
I listen to him and SEA
Leo....your a wonderful lost soul amongst us. I get lost in everything you share. It just so happen I was on my lunch break, in my car, in a parking lot....but joyfully it looks out onto a pond! A pond where there are Egrets, herons and plover passjng thru and...as I sat to listen to your new post....I thought of course it was a bird that caught my eye...but thus time it was a handful of leaves falling, drifting down, nature's way of life and death...so beautiful....along listening to you and what you have to offer to this world. Its gigantic, Leo, what you do, at your age, with such passion.....indeed, its inspiring ....your one of only 3 things on YT that have such genuine purpose and i can support that all day long. Thank you, Leo.
This young man is the next David Attenborough! Give it a little time, and he'll be on all the BBC nature documentaries for the next 50 years 😂❤️
I was waiting for you to attribute the beautiful poetry to some 19th century Engliah poet, but you never did. You speak in such beautiful poetry. Wow!!!!
Very well done, this hit me right in the feels haha. I live in the Pacific Northwest and every day I see more and more forest being cut down for a new senior living apartment complex. It's really sad but I definitely agree with this video
Wow, What an amazing production and beautifull piece of poetry! I wish every human being would watch & listen to this calm and powerfull presentation.
Your voice was so synonymous with marine life and the vastness of the ocean in my brain that i could never imagine it narrating anything else, boy was i wrong and thank goodness that i was 😊
Thank you & keep it up.
This is such a lovely comment, thank you so much!! I LOVE the oceans, but the wildlife on my doorstep has forever held a very special place in my heart too! I’m always a little scared to create films that aren’t what people expect of my channel (e.g. non deep-sea) so I’m thrilled you enjoyed it regardless! 😊
I held my breath so I didn’t interfere with your poetry and music and sounds. What art! So amazing and I appreciate both the message and passion that you share 🫂
It’s a pity. I remember growing up and spending summer days at my grandfather’s. Behind his house was the deep, thick forest. I was never allowed to go too far in, but I still found so much joy there - throwing rocks, clambering over treefalls, digging under stumps. The place seemed endless.
A few days ago, I went back there to clear out his house after he passed and I remember standing at the edge of what was once woods and seeing the rooftops of horribly boxy little townhomes. That endless forest was now just a few trees serving to show the property lines.
I’m lucky in some respects, though, that I live near a wonderful state park, so I can still enjoy the woods. But seeing my childhood forest disappear was heartbreaking.
This is the most beautiful thing I have seen in a while even if it conjures up haunting images
I misses your videos, great to have you back!
This Channel is among by far my favourite that I let play on loop throughout the day, so beautifully scripted and filmed...to see you grow from a kid to now narrating your own project is also endearing... salute
I don't think a video has ever really put these feeling I have into words better then this. We are killing ourselves but killing all these wonderful things.
I do believe with all my heart, you are the next David Attenborough❤❤
Brilliant, Leo, absolutely brilliant ! Thank you.
This was an excellent short film portraying nature and how beautiful it is. It is sad to read the biodiversity is diminishing though. Nature deserves a place on this earth to live as was intended.
Sadly, one day, David Attenborough will pass on. I can see you following in his footsteps. One of my all time favorite narrators in the US was George Page , the original narrator of the Public Broadcasting Network series “Nature”. He passed away years ago but I had become so used to his familiar, smooth calming voice I cried when he passed. I never thought I would ever enjoy another nature program again because I was always comparing other narrators to Page. For me he was the gold standard of perfection with Attenborough a close second. He was such a beautiful man and an accomplished narrator. Along with Attenborough, Page was Iconic to American audiences who loved watching this award winning nature series. You have the kind of voice and clarity of diction that enhances the enjoyment of your videos. I have no doubt you will be very successful!
How is this channel not being given awards for absolutely beautiful outstanding content? This is written and filmed beautifully as well as the symphony playing. Absolutely amazing ❤
Wonderful poem and video. Welcome back!
Thanks Emily 😊 how have you been?
@@NaturalWorldFacts I've been good. I hope you had a great summer.
As an Arizonan, someone who lives in the middle of a desert, forests are a luxury I’ve only indulged in a few times.
@Dr Bright Hello fellow Arizonan. I can relate and totally agree with your statement.
This is absolutely stunning. Leo, the more I watch your work the more I feel you will be a future era's Sir David Attenborough. Love and respect!
i know not who you are , your history , or your story . yet your voice is as familiar as it is beautiful , and you see the world in the world . God bless .
Thank you, I really appreciate this! I’m Leo, I’ve loved animals since I could walk.
Wonderous poem. And I love the little legless lizards.
Thank you 😊
Ahhh yes! Missed your soothing voice Leo. Welcome back 🎉
Thanks Holly, it's so good to be back 😁
I listened to this when i feel overwhelmed or anxious or just when i want to take a moment for myself. your voice and words help me stay grounded and calm down. thank you so much
Glad you're still about. Missed your videos, hope you enjoyed your travels 👍
Cheers! :) The travels were fantastic, it was nice to take a break but definitely excited to be back!
what a nice simple and concise short. I've found myself in a similar situation, for the last few years I've been visiting my local creek several days a week just to take in the wild life and to observe the cycles always going on around the ecosystem. I regularly walk within 20ft from Kangaroo's, I'm constantly on the ground filming or taking photos of insects I'd never really seen before and on the occasion I see eagles and hawks not too far off or more commonly being chased and harassed by crows.
I feel like I'm the only person who really appreciates that place for what it is, so this video is almost like a validation of my emotions and how many take wild places for granted.
I'm Australian and I live very close to Melbourne Airport, the creek is in a paddock beneath the airport landing path but aside from aviation noises not to far above, the creek is in a depression in the paddock so the nearby highway and suburb sounds are muted.
It's my little slice of nature that I've only ever seen 10 other individuals enjoy over the years, just in passing by enjoying a walk. Thankyou
this video is absolutely incredible, the fact you don't have 1M subs is a crime, this entire channel has sparked a love for nature I didn't even know I had beforehand.
This comment means the world to me, especially on this video. My videos on British Wildlife are never anywhere near as popular as my films about the deep sea, but they’re such a joy to create. Celebrating the wildlife on our doorstep and kindling a desire to connect with it is an enormous passion of mine. So getting this comment, on this little video about a little woodland on England’s South Coast which holds a special place in my heart, is wonderful. Thank you so much. Knowing it’s ignited any sort of spark in you is just so lovely!!
@Natural World Facts as a brit myself this video in particular just struck so close to home, please keep up the great work.
I couldn't help but think of how much J.R.R. Tolkien would enjoy this video, along with the spirit behind it.
holy shit dude please make more short films like this
Working on a whole series of them!! 😉
Though i live in a sprawling metro city, i used to like walks along grassfields, parks and farms in the countryside. Man i missed those times when i catched crickets and dragonflies
It makes me really happy to know that there are so many people out there who love the natural world and love to learn about it as well, thank you for making these videos, they have taught me so much, and made me appreciate nature more than I ever did before.
Another great video, great job buddy 🏕️🏕️🏞️🌳🌲🌳
This is so, so beautiful... and so sad. Many cannot look outside themselves and their daily lives, to peer at creatures big and small, even when we steal their home from them, even when we build and build.
I wish people cared about our planet and the other creatures in it; the wonder it brings. This is the only world we have and we're killing it.
I LOVE this channel!!! My mom and I totally bonded over this video! Thanks you! :-)
Oh that’s so wonderful to hear!!!! I’m so glad you both enjoyed. :)
Say hi to your mom for me too!
Beautiful, poignant, and so important. My property in the city of Toronto is an oasis where wildlife and trees are free to be. I sit and watch creatures from the tiniest to the larger, and give them what they need. You have been missed…welcome back.🖤🇨🇦
Welcome back, we missed you and your videos
This was beautiful both visually and audibly. The wilds of the forest are among one of the most precious gifts the world has to offer. You did an amazing job in capturing the beauty and peacefulness that Mother Nature has so graciously given the world.
Amen
Beautiful. Very moving.
This was wonderful. The images, the message. This was nice to soak in, though also saddening. We treat nature so badly, it's going to haunt us.
I love your work ❤ never stop posting!
Thank you 😊😊
I adore this short movie
This was beautiful ❤️❤️🌎🌎! I bring a bag everyday when I go explore either alone or with my two dogs as to pick up trash. I have been studying mushrooms for around 4 years now and I find myself in some precarious places at times…it is quite astonishing to find trash from humans in some of these same places😔🌎❤️
These are incredible!!! But would love a these on Spotify to sleep too
reminds me of a book i had as a kid called “the girl who looked under rocks”. this is absolutely lovely, thank you
All your videos help with my anxiety. I love science and biology.. but your videos are so much more to me. Thank you. 🌧️
Really sounding like the great j r r tolkien, loved this❤
Brilliant, simply brilliant. Thank you.
I have to say, you are an amazingly talented and intelligent young man. I enjoy your content so much and it helps to keep me at peace. When I'm feeling anxious or stressed your voice calms me. Keep it up you have ta calling
This was so beautiful, haunting and real yet full of whimsy and wonder and joy. Thanks for this (and everything else you do).
Take care
This moved me to tears. All I could think about is the big park I live right next to. There are spots where you see more litter than grass. My favorite tree in this park has been vandalized by someone who nailed planks to it with rusty nails, to make a sitting spot on the (already practically horizontal) branches I guess... Not only is this illegal, what made me the most sad is I now barely see the crows, wood pigeons, ants, squirrels and firebugs that used to live there anymore. Everytime I go see it there is more and more litter under it.
Rambly ramble, but really though people like you give me the courage to take action myself. I've been wanting to just go and pick up trash myself in this park and I've been scared to actually do it for some reason. The people at my city hall straight up told me they don't care about such issues and they don't want to hire me to clean up so I guess I felt discouraged. So thank you for this video. Gave me a lot of hope.
Oh my goodness this is both disheartening and encouraging! Hearing about your local park reminds me a lot of what I’ve experienced in the New Forest, and it really is tragic. But hearing that my video gave you some hope warms my heart! Don’t stop fighting, don’t stop loving the wilds and their beauty! I hope the rest of the world, and your city hall, start to care about the importance and wonder of these places.
Bro made a piece of art
You're gonna make bro cry
Beautiful! Thank you so much for all that you do! We've missed you!!
that was unspeakably beautiful. thank you for awakening the longing for the woods in me again
This is so beautiful. It made me tear up😢
Oh here comes the voice that brings music to my ears.🌻🧡🧡

Thank you so much! I’m actually working on a little series of much longer films, filmed in this very woodland. 😊 It’s taking me a while because I’m really scared there’s not an audience for it since I typically do deep-sea, so this comment is incredibly motivating!! Thank you!!
Also, I love Exurb1a, so that’s so cool to hear!
Beautiful!
